Where To Eat In Philly When You Don’t Care About Sports

"One step into Port Richmond’s Boricua 2, and you’ll notice their love of Puerto Rico and the lack of anything sports-related. Everyone’s more invested in their plates of adobo-spiced, slow-roasted pork, potato salad, and flan. While the menu can be hit or miss, you’ll leave satisfied if you go with the sizable “Boricua Special” platter. Plus, the tropical-decorated restaurant and its constant rotation of Santana and Willie Colón blasting through the speakers provide a sports-town escapism that works every time. " - candis mclean

Philadelphia’s Best Puerto Rican Restaurants

"Your immediate reaction to your first bite of macaroni salad at Boricua 2 will be “Ay Dios Mio!” (whether you’re Puerto Rican or not). The Port Richmond restaurant has classic Puerto Rican fare for a super reasonable price—try the $16 “Boricua Special” to get a hefty portion of food, including your choice of two sides and one main entree. While neither the tuna macaroni salad nor potato salad are uniquely Puerto Rican, you must get a side of both—they’re so good you’ll find yourself eating those before you’ve touched your mains. The entire place is covered in tropical florals reminiscent of El Yunque, with an upbeat Latinidad soundtrack, including Selena, Santana, and Willie Colón. If you’re in Northern Liberties, check out their original location on N. 3rd Street for takeout." - carolyn rivera, candis mclean

The 17 Best Caribbean Restaurants In Philly

"Good, slow-roasted pernil, and what's almost certainly the highest concentration of Puerto Rican flags in Philly—that's Boricua 2 in Port Richmond, the larger sibling of the original Boricua in Northern Liberties. There's plenty of room inside to eat solid Puerto Rican classics like mofongo, beef and chicken turnovers, and pollo guisado. And while you're hanging out, you'll probably hear laughter from the kitchen and see the staff ask about the family members of at least four people who walk inside. Order your dish as a platter—that way, it'll come with sides like evenly seasoned beans or thinly sliced plantains." - candis mclean

Boricua 2 - Review - Port Richmond - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Boricua 2 is a casual Puerto Rican restaurant in Port Richmond. This larger, dine-in version of the original Boricua in Northern Liberties is part eatery, part Puerto Rico tourism bureau. The entire place is emanating Puerto Rican pride, covered in flags and tchotchkes, and has a wall declaring “Yo Soy Boricua.” When it comes to the mains, it’s all about the pernil–incredibly tender, juicy, adobo-spiced, slow-roasted pork, which you can order as the Plato Boricua (which comes with two sides). If pork isn’t your thing, the fragrant pollo guisado is a tasty second best. Skip the under-seasoned pasteles, but share orders of the crispy beef pastelillos and garlic tostones. photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo Potato Saladphoto credit: Nicole Guglielmo photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo" - Alison B. Google
The food is amazing. I've been trying to find an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant in the area and at Boricua they deliver! Everything was delicious and the service was top notch. It made me feel very VIP and look forward to coming back soon. I had the pork chop, yellow rice, and macaroni salad. The pork chop is seasoned beautifully and cooked with a crispy outside that melts in your mouth. The yellow rice was very good along with the macaroni salad. My wife ordered the pollo guisada, white rice and beans, and a green salad. The pollo guisada was tender and fabulous but pairing it with the rice and beans was heaven. We split an order of tostones and they were garlicky little bites of pleasure. Highly recommend a visit to this fantastic spot!

Google
The place is is very nice, they took pride in their culture and provided unique details to educate you bout P.R. and the service was great. The food was good but the pernil stood out the most to me, definitely will go back for more. The price is bout the same as most places nowadays

Google
Great food was over shadowed by an even greater person (owner). Wishing Hector the best for his future. Traveled to Philly for a weekend and got to try authentic Puerto Rican food in a beautiful restaurant. Pernil was delicious and so was the arroz con gandules. Everything was clean and enjoyed conversing with the owner.

Google
I had such an amazing experience eating here today! Hector and Rico were extremely accommodating and attentive. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was beautiful! As a Puerto Rican who can cook I’m happy to say that I left the restaurant extremely satisfied. I pray that God continues to bless Hector, his staff and the restaurant in all of their endeavors!🇵🇷 ❤️

Boricua Restaurant #2 has a warm, welcoming vibe that instantly makes you feel at home. The atmosphere is full of culture, good energy, and friendly faces. It's the kind of place you'll want to come back to, not just for the experience, but because you can tell the food is something special - the kind that draws you in and leaves you curious to try everything on the menu.

Google
Great Puerto Rican restaurant with an even better owner. Hector is incredibly courteous, kind, and hospitable. He went above and beyond with helping us cater for a church event. The food is fantastic as well. We ordered yellow rice, both the chicken and pork dishes, as well as the sweet plantains. All were excellent and very well enjoyed by all the members that attended our church event. Will definitely continue to be a patron of this restaurant and eager to see how our God will use Hector and this restaurant for His kingdom work! God bless! P.S. they just opened up a food truck. Can’t wait to try it out!

Google
I paid $73.+ for my meal I had 2 order of mofongo with chicken $18. Each, one order of pernil $11. I bought an umbrella for $15. Juice pacha $4. Soda $2. It made my daughter & I Sick to our stomachs, and I throw up. He gagged me charged me too much, the food was nasty hard, and dry chicken the hard, and dry nasty mofongo, made us both sick. The pernil was for my father I don’t eat pork. Never again. They advise me that they’re setting up a truck on Hunting Park I would never. High boogie prices for regular Puerto Rican food and something was wrong with it it honestly made me throw up something horrible. My daughter sick to her stomach. Just a bad experience serves me right I was hungry I wasn’t think straight, just don’t do it. Just a Horrible Nasty Experience! For all that money food needs to be great. Greedy ppl in this world. There’s GOD.

Yelp
Good food. Liked the empanadas and rellenos de papa. The potato salad is very good too

Yelp
Tried them at the Wawa Welcome Festival. Long line thanks to the "everything under $10" sign. Service was quick, but portions were small. We got the rice with meat and chicken--it was dry and lacked seasoning. Tres leches was super wet but not in a good way. The empanadas though? Total win. Crispy outside, juicy and flavorful inside. If I came back, it'd be just for those.

Yelp
I cannot say anything about the service or ambience here since I ordered delivery from here. I ordered a "boricua meal" with pernil, white rice, beans, and macaroni salad. The pork and beans were beautifully seasoned, fresh and delicious. The macaroni could've used a bit more salt, but was still very good. The portion size is generous so that I had leftovers for lunch the next day.

Yelp
Posting my review here. We only ever ate at restaurant 1 but they moved here. Same owners. Same food. Hands down the best Puerto Rican food in Philadelphia and the owners are the greatest people. I'm sold and a customer for life

Yelp
We ordered the pernil catering tray for Christmas, and it was worth it! I've had Boricua's food at a recent birthday and their food is very good. The skin was perfectly crispy and the meat was juicy. I would recommend ordering two days ahead for holidays when you want the pernil because they go fast

Yelp
This place was awesome. Service and ambiance out of this world. I am not from this area, so this was good to see. The staff gave us a tour and educated us about the PR culture and their other restaurants. We will definitely be back!!

Yelp
Yes it was like visiting my family in Carolina. My son is a US Marine who has some struggles with combat wounds. Taking him to Boricua was giving him back some memories. It brought him back to his roots and his Abuela. Thank you for making him (and me) feel at home. This was definitely good for our soul.

Yelp
As someone who identifies as Puerto Rican/Boricua, I approve! I ordered a platter that came with arroz con gandules, pernil and potato salad. I also ordered papas rellenas, sweet plantains and empanadas. The arroz con gandules was a solid base for pairing with bites of the pernil and pieces of the papas rellenas. The sweet plantains were so bomb I was popping them in my mouth on their own. Same for the empanadas- very delicious! I had 1 chicken and 1 beef. I finished off with the tres leches which was yummy as well. All of that food was definitely enough for 2 meals so I had plenty of leftovers! My one critique is that the arroz con gandules was a bit too bland to eat on its own without pairing bites with the other sides. However, I arrived to order at the end of the day so I received the last of the last. I don't think it's fair to judge their arroz con gandules based on that. I begged them to give me whatever they had so I got what I got and am not mad at it! I plan on returning earlier in the day to try it again and to dine in/try more menu items. The atmosphere inside is also really nice. Its very clean and calming but also vibrant with elements of PR culture incorporated into the decor.

Yelp
I love the rice and beans and pork. I tell my friends that they need to eat there. The food is great. The service is excellent and fast. The ambiance is very pleasant and it's nice to be there.

Yelp
i wanted to love this.. pros: the macaroni salad is SLAMMING, rice and beans were just that. rice & beans. passion fruit juice was good. cons: the pernil was as if a whole bucket of salt was poured on it. so salty i couldn't eat it. i wanted to! but i couldn't. the passion fruit juice was good, BUT it tasted like it came from a pepsi fountain machine. not sure why they charge so much for it. people seem to complain about the price... to me if the foods good you can't put a price on it. however, if it's bad, just give me my money back! i definitely don't recommend the boricua platter for horrible taste number one and then number two the price.

Tiffany S.

Yelp
Beautiful location, great service, and most importantly the food was delicious. Taste was flavorful, authentic, and cooked to perfection. Definitely my favorite spot in the area! Highly recommend!

Anonymous L.

Yelp
The portion is nowhere near what it's worth. They are such small portions that if you have a big appetite or come here very hungry, you would probably need 2 portions of rice. Seriously. also the music is was too loud. I could barely hear across my table and everybody was talking very loud because the music was loud which made everything overwhelming. Hector, you should take these reviews into consideration. Everybody complains about the price or the size portion. If you made bigger portions, and lower the music a bit, i think i would come again. I suggest more rice, without the price change because the price is already extremely high.

Scarlett A.

Yelp
To expensive for the amount of food given you will be hungry in a few hours after eating here

David C.

Yelp
I agree with the review saying the amount of food is small for the price. The arroz con gandules ($8) tasted ok. The pernil ($9) tasted good, it was a shame it didn't have cuerito. The chicken pasteles (a yunta of 2 for $8) had an appearance that wasn't very appetizing, the taste was ok. I'd look into the recipe to make the pasteles a lighter color. Overall, I'd be leery about going there again but I'd be willing to give them a chance again if things change.

Yelp
First I drove an hour to try this restaurant and was excited. Living int the Burbs we do not have PR restaurants and drive distance to eat home food. We arrived at 6:30 pm and was greeted by the rude women at the front that told us we could only order take out because they close at 8 pm and had 3 other tables (2 of which already had their food). I was confused as it was 6:30 pm. I told her we drove an hour and that we wanted to sit down she gave an attitude and told us that we would have to leave by 7:30 pm. If I didn't have my 1 yr old granddaughter who hadn't eaten we would have left. After being sat we could hear her huffing and puffing. We ordered quickly ( which they had run out of most of their small menu). The large table behind us didn't even order yet. We hurried to eat. And even quickly ordered additional food to go. The food was good portions very small. There were to other ladies working there that we nice and helpful. Needless to say ate stressfully & quickly and was done by 7:04 pm. With 26 minutes to spare before she would kick us out ‍ ( me,my sister and 1yr old granddaughter), the large table was still there when we left. Regardless of the nasty rude lady in the front door I still left a 20% tip ( my sister thought I should not have left such a large tip). Total bill$104.00. I doubt I will be back. The front door lady is better suited to work at dicks last resort.
