The 20 Best Restaurants in Hobart, Australia | Eater

"After leaving his hometown for Melbourne, Con Vailas came back a few years ago to a Hobart far more bustling than the one he left. He returned to open Born in Brunswick, inspired by Melbourne cafe culture, in hip North Hobart. Floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights let the sun shine on the restaurant’s plant-lined walls, while the menu features Aussie staples like avocado toast, hotcakes, and potato hash. But chef Josh Retzer also pushes the bounds of cafe fare by incorporating native ingredients and foraged herbs. Do not miss his weekend specials, like cured wallaby on cheddar polenta or octopus okonomiyaki with saltbush, a salty native herb. [$ - $$]" - Audrey Bourget

Had a lovely brunch at Born in Brunswick! The corn & kale fritters were packed with flavor and perfectly balanced, and the French toast was an absolute standout, rich, indulgent, and beautifully plated. The vibe of the place is relaxed and inviting, with a great atmosphere for a slow morning meal. The only thing that threw me off a bit was not being able to tell who was waitressing, there didn’t seem to be a uniform or dress code, so I wasn’t sure who to ask when I needed something, I asked someone for water and was totally mistaken, so embarrassing. Otherwise, a fantastic experience. Will definitely be back!

Lots of seating and they gave us a nice quiet spot to have our lunch. Not an extensive menu, mostly brunch. From our seats we could watch the kitchen prepare our meals. We both enjoyed our lunch and coffee. If you're in the neighbourhood give it a try.

Born in Brunswick – North Hobart Born in Brunswick is a standout café with a relaxed open-plan layout that gives you a glimpse into the bustling kitchen. There are various seating options, including cosy window seats perfect for watching the world go by. The menu is superb, beautifully presented, high-end food without the hefty price tag. And the coffee? Easily rivals the best of the best. A must-visit if you’re in Hobart! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Stopped in for a coffee on a rainy day. My boyfriend ordered a large cappuccino and I got mug envy when I saw how big it was. Rushed over and they confirmed he had only ordered me a small but were happy to upgrade at no extra price. Loved the customer service and great atmosphere, terrific seats for people watching.

I recently visited Born in Brunswick with a friend, and while the café had a lovely environment with a modern and cozy ambiance, the service left much to be desired. The staff didn’t seem very welcoming, which slightly dampened the experience. For my meal, I ordered the baked eggs, which I had heard great reviews about. However, I personally found them too tangy for my taste and didn’t enjoy them as much as I had hoped. On the other hand, my friend had the avocado toast, which was well-prepared and delicious. The highlight of my visit was the coffee—it was creamy, rich, and perfectly balanced. Unfortunately, my friend ordered a chai, which she could barely drink. Overall, my experience at Born in Brunswick was mixed. The café itself has a great atmosphere, and the coffee is excellent, but the food was hit or miss, and the service could be friendlier. I might return for the coffee and ambiance, but I’d hope for a more welcoming experience next time.

Excellent service, delicious food and great atmosphere. The Tasmanian Octopus Omelette is unique and tasty. The french toast is really good too.

Came as a party of 5 for brunch on a Saturday, service was prompt and excellent, love the modern ambience and seats were comfortable. The octopus scrambled eggs are a must try, the perfect hit of spice and flavour, and goes well with the scrambled eggs on toast. Coffee here is also excellent, the Iced Chai with coconut cream is also a must try!!

This Hobart cafe is awesome! The food's a bit unusual, but the flavors are spot-on. Highly recommend

Yelp
Pretty typical Tasmanian breakfast place. Clean light and typical modern wood tables and good food. Worth a visit but not exceptional. Parking always an issue in Nobo/north Hobart but good for 1 hour parking or up some of the side streets.

Yelp
Tries hard to be trendy. Cannot fault the coffee it is good. Looks like your average cafe along the street but enter into a light green space. Friendly and brightt atmosphere. Table service - we were seated and checked menu - great range of Vegan and GF options. Ordered and food arrived in reasonably easy time, delivered by friendly waitress. The Tassie mushrooms were good. Honey marinated halloumi was not to my taste - expect halloumi to be salty whereas this was more like tofu. Lots of good points but not quite excellent.

Yelp
There's coffee and a cafe with substantial food- I just grabbed coffee and a muffin this time. I didn't recognise the roaster, it's a boutique roster from Melbourne. Coffee is nice- smooth with a nice caramel finish. Muffin was cold, very grainy but it's a muffin, y'know? Inside is bright and spacious, lots of seating. Takeaway service is slow... very slow. Check in, update your status or read the paper. You'll have time.

Yelp
Exactly what hobart needs! Beautiful, bright venue. Whatever you order off the menu will taste even better than you had hoped and the staff are lovely.

Yelp
The most hip and happening place in Hobart, great venue to meet for brunch or lunch. The open kitchen is entertaining and the staff are engaging. Food is creative and beautifully presented, Con the host is charming and friendly. Great atmosphere and vibe. Will certainly recommend and return. Areas to improve.... - no wifi. - male staff member not appropriately dressed (muscle top with nips showing). - wait staff did not ask if we wanted anymore drinks, I would of ordered 2 more wines.

Yelp
Ok, let's get the name rant out of the way, because there's clearly enough that I like about this place... except the name. Brunswick, you see, is a suburb of Melbourne. Are we in Melbourne? No. We're in Hobart. Do the owners hail from Melbourne? No, they're Tasmanians. Does Hobart respect Melbourne in the kind of way that if a cafe opens named after a Melbourne suburb, we're going to flock there in awe? No, really not. I've not heard a positive comment from a single local about the name of this place. I've heard a couple of lukewarm/neutral responses ("ol' mate said he got his love of food in Melb and that's where the name came from, but geez ay"). I've heard a lot of negatives. Maybe five years ago opening a place like this would have been revolutionary, but the local hospo scene has really shot skyward since then and we locals are pretty proud of it so why would you waltz in in late 2016 singing Melbourne's praises? If you love it there so much, maybe open a cafe there, not here. HAVING SAID THAT/RANT OVER. The owners are ever-present, kind and welcoming. The menu is crazy full of interesting options (and a few stock standard ones for your boring friends or family you may drag here)--though some options are getting a little toward the wanky end, eg bark as an ingredient. The prices are a little high (some might say... Melbourne pricing?). The coffee is actually a little disappointing, I have to admit--poor milk pour (oversteamed, maybe? One more than one occasion) and not a super tasty roast (not very Melbourne, guys!). The space is light and bright, but cavernous--I've only dined here by myself so far but holding a conversation would require a bit of a raised voice. Talk about food, Mem. Ok. The hotcake almost destroyed me, in the very best of ways. A lovely balanced amount of flavours, though a little too much food. The eggs on toast were simple, fluffy and tasty, though I mostly chose them because I was hankering to try the peach, tomato and pepperberry relish... which I could have received a lot more of on my plate! I'm really looking forward to coming back more around lunchtime to try some of the lunchier options on the single all day brunch menu ("all day brunch" is a favourite phrase of mine) but I do also think there's a lot that could be tweaked here to raise that star count. I've been pretty harsh with these guys. Maybe it's subconscious. Maybe if they were called Born in Bellerive I'd have gone easier on them. Who can really say?
