On the Grid : Borough Wines

"Although Kensal rise was Borough Wine’s fifth store to open since it began as a small stall in Borough Market, the West London shop still maintains its strong independent feel, retaining the company spirit of being close to the local community and supporting independent vineyards and micro breweries. They offer a refillable wine station as well as various tasting and master class events." - Effection

Great spot for wine in London and happens to be located in one of the best markets (Borough Market). Love the wines on tap and the aperol spritz in the granita/frozen drink machines. Highly recommend for good wine selection and atmosphere.

The wines I’ve tried were ok, nothing special or one that’s I’d like to repurchase. Unfortunately the overall experience with the Borough Wines, from dismissive shop staff, endless emails and calls which were ignored to the poor website experience and the broken bottle I’ve received due to poor packaging, makes me not want to approach them ever again. Fortunately there are plenty of other wine sellers in London who make an effort.

Great staff, super helpful and knowledgeable with a nice variety of international references.

We bought a Prosecco from them and they did not disappoint. I recommend dropping by at their store and getting some for yourself.

If you're in the area and looking for good wine, definitely a 'must visit'. Managed to pop in just before closing on Wednesday, looking for something natural/biodynamic. Three wines were recommended, purchased two, both thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated.

Generally unhjelpful member of staff who managed to tell me Rioja was from Spain when asked for some more infomation about a red wine. It did save me reading the label.

The mulled wine here was £4 and tasted decent. Some hints of spice and fruit but the mulling wine itself didn't taste special.

The staff is very rude and doesn’t seem interested in selling their wines.

Yelp
A great place to talk to knowledgeable wine merchants as well as do a bit of tasting (albeit a bit difficult to do so effectively when the temperatures really drop - but they'll still happily oblige). The stall has a decent, if not enormous, collection... and there are some bargains to be had if you're buying more than one bottle since they offer various types of discounts on multi-purchases. Once the Christmas season rolls around you can't help but stop here for a steaming cup of mulled wine... happy holidays for a mere £3! But what I probably like best about this place is that they sell wine from the barrel (usually they have a red and a white on tap, but sometimes rose). Once you've purchased your glass litre bottle, you can come back to the market to fill it up again and again. Definitely ask to taste what they're dispensing first, since it's not always fantastic, but still, I'm in love with concept...it just feels so old-fashioned and rustic...like it's what one would do if you lived in the countryside of 19th century Provence or Liguria or such...
