On the Grid : El Borrego

"El Borrego is a bright orange beacon amid the multitude of greige storefronts that line El Cajon Boulevard. Literally translating to "the lamb", El Borrego's specialty is lamb barbacoa - lamb slow cooked over an open fire, which is traditionally a specialty of the Hidalgo region of Mexico. Owners Rosaria and Rodina have been in business at this location for 11 years and say they cook about 2,000 pounds of lamb each month. In addition to their many lamb-based menu items, El Borrego carries your usual Mexican favorites and serves breakfast all day. Rosaria shared with us how the opening of the new YMCA just next door has brought in new business. They're now offering fresh raw juices and detox smoothies - perfect post-workout drinks! They've also found success in the catering business for local events. As we finished our meal, Rodina opened the back door of the restaurant and ushered us into a weed-filled, but surprisingly large outdoor space. She shared her plans of an outdoor beer garden, somewhat of a hipster hangout - something the east side of The Boulevard desperately needs. She said their in-process plans show it could seat 80 people and they'll soon be working out permitting and any other red tape they might encounter. She hopes to have something to show by the end of 2016." - Noble Intent Studio

The Best Restaurants and Bars in San Diego’s Gaslamp Neighborhood | Eater San Diego

"The newest addition to the Gaslamp scene is the ninth-floor restaurant and bar atop Hotel Indigo. With views of Petco Park and the city skyline, the establishment features cocktails like Expresso de Olla (coffee, vodka, spiced chocolate) and Baja Bloom (gin, chili-infused mezcal, roasted pineapple)." - Helen I. Out of this world views! There was a game going on and the roar of the crowd was a rush. Service was excellent. We talked with our Server about baseball, cocktails and all upbeat Good pour on the cocktail with requested extra garnish. Very nice touch. The bar is super clean and allowed family children to accompany the adults. Really liked this place.

Google
Great views, decent food, but service needs work One of the best parts of Borrego Rooftop is the view — overlooking Petco Park and the surrounding skyline, it really gives you a great sense of the city. The food was good — we tried the steak fries and grilled steak. The flavor was solid, not mind-blowing, but enjoyable. Drinks? Cold beer and carajillos — hard to go wrong there. The service, unfortunately, wasn’t at the same level. It took about 15 -20 minutes just to get a waiter assigned and take our drink order. Later, as we stayed to enjoy the fresh night air, the server repeatedly brought us the check without us asking for it — even after I ordered more drinks. It got a little awkward when I had to hand it back a second time. I always leave a good tip because I respect everyone’s work, but it’s not ideal when you’re still ordering and get pushed the check multiple times. Overall: amazing view, decent food, drinks are reliable — just hope for a better service experience next time.

Borrego Rooftop is a hidden gem perched on the 9th floor of Hotel Indigo in the Gaslamp Quarter. Whether you’re a guest at the hotel or just looking for a great rooftop hangout, this spot is open to the public after 4 PM and definitely worth checking out. One of the highlights here is the incredible view—overlooking downtown San Diego with a direct line of sight into Petco Park, home of the Padres. It’s a perfect place to grab a drink before a game or just unwind while watching the city buzz below. The drink menu is impressive, offering a wide variety of liquors and creative mixed drinks, so there’s something for everyone. They also have food available to order, which makes it easy to spend a few hours just soaking it all in. Whether you’re seated at the bar, along the railing for the best views, or lounging by one of the cozy patio fireplaces, Borrego Rooftop gives you a relaxed, elevated experience in every sense of the word. A great vibe, great views, and a perfect way to enjoy San Diego’s beautiful evenings.

Google
I was so grateful that Borrego Rooftop allowed us to make a weeknight dinner reservation for a group of 11. Located on the 9th floor of the hotel, the bar area is absolutely stunning with amazing views of Petco Stadium and the Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego. They have comfortable seating with fire pits on the roof to keep you warm. Our server was excellent—very attentive, and handled such a large group with complicated food and drink orders very well. The food and drinks were fantastic—a bit expensive, but so, so delicious and ultimately worth the cost. Probably the best food we ate in San Diego! I enjoyed the crispydilla appetizer, borrego fried fish taco, and Sonoran sunset drink. Among our party we tried most things on the menu and enjoyed it all. The shoestring fries, in particular, were absolutely fantastic—perfectly seasoned and crispy. I would give this restaurant 5/5 stars, but we were a bit surprised at the end of the meal to see that we were charged $94 for waters for the table. Aside from being asked at the beginning of the night if we wanted still or sparkling water (we chose still), we were not warned that the cost of waters and water refills would be so exorbitant. I wish they had been upfront with the cost—had we known, we likely would have elected for a cheaper option, or at least declined the refills. Just something to be aware of before dining here!

Google
This is a really nice rooftop bar and kitchen in downtown San Diego. The food is very good. The drink menu has something for everyone. If you like wine, try the red blend from Mexico ... It was surprisingly good! The service is personable and attentive. Give it a try!

Google
Loved our server. Great place to watch the sunset. Got mezcal with a splash of pineapple juice and a jalapeño slice, it was perfect. We also ordered the chips with salsa and guacamole and falafel balls.

Google
I stayed at the hotel and thought that the rooftop bar sounded really cool. And it was. Awesome atmosphere with an amazing rooftop view of PETCO park. Fire Pit and comfortable seating. But the service wasn’t great. I first came up around 5:00 and even though there were only a few people here, nobody even acknowledged my presence and I left without anyone noticing I was even there After going elsewhere for dinner and drinks, I decided to try one more time with a nightcap. This time, I was greeted and seated right away, but then they seemed to have forgotten about me. Took about 35 minutes for me to get a drink. Ordered a margarita and it was very good but after being there for an hour, I was only able to get one drink

This rooftop is located on the 9th floor of the hotel. As soon as you get out of the elevator the restaurant will be to your left. There is a bar area and another seating area on the other side. It is a very chill, calm environment. I went for the first time with some friends to have dinner and the food and service was great. Mario our server was funny, very informative, attentive, polite, and would constantly check in on us to see if we needed anything. The hostess was also very nice and showed me where I could find the restroom and stated they have blankets incase it ever got too cold. I chose to sit near a fire pit and that kept me warm enough to be comfortable. The seating and the view is amazing. I ordered the mojo de ajo chicken, it was actually really good in my opinion. It is served with this sort of crusted bean cake that was phenomenal, never had anything like it. I also had a glass of the Mexican blend wine which was not too dry nor too sweet, but I would say a bit more on the drier side. Overall we had a great experience, absolutely loved and enjoyed it here. Thank you Mario for an unforgettable night!

Yelp
Ya know, just when you think you know your city top to bottom a new (to me) place catches you off guard and you become a fan. That's exactly the case with Borrego Rooftop. Located on level 9 of Hotel Indigo this place is dope. I kept thinking how rad it would be if I booked a trip to SD and landed myself at Hotel Indigo with a rooftop bar as nice as this one. The Mexican theme isn't overdone and the prices really aren't too bad for what you get. What do you get exactly? Well... For me the best part was the view, especially because there was a Padre game happening at Petco Park and you could see the action really well. I'll certainly be back before baseball is done for the year and Borrego earned my endorsement for both tourists and locals.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this rooftop spot after seeing it on Instagram. The views did not disappoint! I went here before a Padres game and could see the players warming up. I grabbed a reservation online since it did fill up closer to game time. You can sit on barstools right near the window (best views) or around the fireplaces with very comfy chairs. The cocktails were picturesque and very Insta-worthy. My favorite was the Aloha Ma (mezcal & aloe flavors). Hit up this spot if you are downtown!

Yelp
I recently came here with coworkers for a happy hour. I really wanted to like this place but several things impacted my experience. The rooftop area only had 1 server while we were there. The drinks we ordered were not what we got. For example someone in my group ordered a st. Germain spritz and got an aperol spritz with st. Germain in it which I was told wasn't it (didn't taste good). Most everyone at the table had a similar experience. The drinks weren't bad but they were good either. I had a zero proof beverage and it didn't bad but not good either. Our server was funny, tried his best to be fast and accommodating when he read out loud faces taking first sips the view is great and can see why people would come here for that. Maybe I came on an off night

Yelp
On my outing the other night I stumbled upon this hidden gem! The Borrego rooftop located on IHG's Hotel Indigo's 9th floor, focuses on great indoor/outdoor lounge areas. Nestled amongst city buildings, the ambiance of the layout makes the city skyline & Petco park pop in the background. There are multiple firepits with couches and a bar top with barstools that attached to the glass railing. The glass railing make any seat on the patio the place to be. In addition, There is a wood covered art deco bar to the side of the lounge areas. This intimate spot is perfect for a night out with the friend or a nightcap afterwork. Hours are Monday-Sunday 4:00 PM - 11:00 PM, Friday-Saturday 4:00 PM - 12:00 AM. There server was fast and friendly! I did not try the food, but the hibiscus cured Kampachi looked good or next time. Try the espresso martini it was delicious!

Yelp
Great Margarita and absolutely delicious mushroom main dish. I didn't leave full, but I am still thinking of those mushrooms weeks later.

Yelp
Great views of the city and the Padres Ballpark. Amazing food and drinks. Must try it.

Yelp
Venture into Borrego Kitchen and Cocktails in downtown San Diego for a whirlwind of flavor and fun! Thanks to their lifesaving parking validation, you can focus on soaking in the jaw-dropping views rather than fretting over parking woes. Whether you're cozied up inside or lounging by the fire pits outside, the ambiance is electric. Their shareable menu keeps the good times rolling with no-fuss, delicious dishes. Despite a minor steak snafu (we ordered medium well and they werequick to fix it), the impeccable service from our server and bartender kept the smiles coming. We're already planning our next visit, especially for those clear-sky panoramas and a wave to Petco Park in the distance!

Yelp
We stayed at the hotel on our wedding night and came up to the rooftop to eat our wedding cake and have a drink. Our server was so excited that we had just gotten married that she told the manager who had everyone sign a congratulations card for us and brought out Prosecco and berries for us. It was really so sweet! The view of the stadium is really great and the atmosphere on the rooftop is cozy. We would definitely come back based on their amazing customer service. Thanks again to all the staff who made our night extra special!

Hannah S.

Yelp
This is a NEW spot! First things first, it's a rooftop with a view of downtown. You got the cityscape and even a view of the padres stadium. Sunsets look pretty sweet from up there. Speaking of sweet - they got some nice speciality cocktails on the menu and tasty small bites. What I ordered: Food- the sliders were perfect with a little pickled onion action to bring that acidity in. Good amount of moist meat. Tasty! Drinks- cannot remember the exact name but it tasted like cactus cooler! Yum! The service was super nice and quick! Everyone was very accommodating and proud of the new establishment. (As they should be!) I recommend coming here for a friends night out or a hangout before a padres game. There is no covering so if it rains I'm not sure if they will stay open (With this bi-polar San Diego weather we shall see what happens next haha) but if it doesn't rain and it's still cold outside, no worries because they have 2 nice little fire pits to enjoy your drink in front of!

Yelp
This is a well hidden gem. The food is delicious. Their beers on tap hit the spot too.

Alexis S.

Yelp
Visiting from South Carolina. This place has an amazing view right into Petco stadium. You can see almost the whole game from the rooftop. We actually came to Borrego two nights in a row. The first just for drinks and Robert was so friendly and we really enjoyed watching him mix numerous types of eye capturing drinks. He was so helpful also with knowing different areas and local spots to visit. The second night the ambience was amazing and our server Kyle was amazing! He kept the drinks coming and whenever we needed something seemed like he was right there. The shoestring fries are by far the best I've had with us in end ordering 3 servings!
google avatar

Taylor Rae W.

Yelp
I literally had the best service I've ever had at a restaurant. The drinks were absolutely amazing. I ordered a coffee from downstairs, and the barista brought it all the way up to the bar for me. The bartender introduced me to a new non-alcoholic drink. It was so refreshing, and light. Definitely a whole mixologist. The food was served in a timely manner and was very flavorful. The ambience is absolutely astonishing, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience.
google avatar

Courtney A.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this place. It's a beautiful setup, and it overlooks Petco Park. You could probably see most of a game on a game day. They have a great menu of their own drinks, and all the heavy hitters on the shelves. My bartender made a mean old fashioned. We also had the fries, which were pretty solid. The service was fantastic from the second we walked in the door. Totally worth it.
google avatar

Jeff G.

Yelp
Kyle was our server and he was fantastic. Gave us some great insight into the city and the neighborhood. Great views of the stadium too.

Alli J.

Yelp
Would've had no idea this place existed if my homie didn't walk me thru finding it. Just looks like a wall... no signs. No indicator there's a DOPE rooftop bar w/ IMMACULATE view of the padres stadium. Had a server named Ky. He had great energy, knowledgeable, & gave great recommendations! Caesar salad was SO GOOD!!
google avatar

Morgan G.

Yelp
This place is beyond! Our first time here since the remodel, it had great drinks, beautiful views, and an incredible staff. HUGE shout out to Jackson! He was friendly, fun, and made the experience even better. 11/10.
google avatar

Alice Y.

Yelp
My bf and I ubered around Gaslamp Quarters on a Sunday night. We entered the Hotel Indigo and took the elevator up to the rooftop bar. It was 5 minutes until 5pm, so the bar technically wasn't open yet. They kindly let us sit at a table off to the side as they finished setting up. We ordered 2 drinks for about $35 after tax and tip. They were tasty and appeared to be full of alcohol (I was watching the bartender while waiting to pay), yet they didn't have an immediate effect on us. We spent 20 minutes taking pics in the cute instagrammable alcove before relocating to the outdoor furniture surrounding a fire pit. The vibe was more "Gen X on vacation or work travel" at the early evening time that we visited.
google avatar

Britton G.

Yelp
Kyle & Katlyn were amazing with their hospitality and service. Top notch service and skyline views. I would bring people here to entertain during game time. You can see home plate at the padres and the food is amazing!

Kim G.

Yelp
This rooftop bar of the Hotel Indigo just reopened after a renovation and it blew me away! The views of Petco Park where the Padres play and the skyline are amazing. Sunset was so beautiful sitting by the fire. They even gave me a cozy blanket!! Our server was awesome. The food is all organic and sooo much better than any other rooftops in the area. I had maitake mushrooms, hibiscus cured kanpachi, and the seasonal ceviche that were all super fresh and delicious. The drinks were well balanced and unique. The perfect way to catch up with a friend I havnt seen in years!!

Renee A.

Yelp
Thank you Jackson! Great personable service! NICE! Coming back tomorrow before the game.
google avatar

Evelyn H.

Yelp
The staff was friendly. The drinks were yummy. The scenery was absolutely stunning and it was very low key and not full for a Friday evening. Will be retuning
google avatar

Nikki E.

Yelp
Cute spot for photos and just hanging out by the fire pit. Great views too. Didn't try any food, was just there for drinks. Pretty strong and the bartender was really sweet. Would definitely go again.

Nele T.

Yelp
Amazing clean and fresh food and the cocktails are too tasty:)!! The vibe is so much more elevated than other rooftop bars in SD. It seems to be a place that even residents come in and not only tourist. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
The bar was great, actually let me re-say that, the view is great, the atmosphere and the ambiance is great the bay is a fricken R.I.P.-Off. The bar tender is a 3 star and the pricing is a 1 star. We paid $200 00 for 4 drinks and an appetizer. I will never go back here again. So why did I give this place a FIVE STAR review, because if you want a roof top bay over looking PetCo Park then this place is great. Just keep in mind you will pay out your butt for your drinks and garlic fries!
google avatar

Gabrielle B.

Yelp
Very glamorous rooftop bar of a hotel! The music was bumpin and the drinks were pricey but amazing! I had a few lemon drops and they were some of the best I've had. I also had an impossible burger in a lettuce wrap and it was pretty bare bones...definitely would recommend drinking here vs dinner. The view was awesome and the fire pits added a nice ambiance.

jordan n.

Yelp
Ambiance was great! Overlooks Petco Park and is a great place to grab a drink or two before you head to the stadium for a game. We split the Caprese Flatbread as an appetizer and it was the perfect pregame snack. I wanted to give a special shoutout to Jesse, the food and beverage manager, who escorted us to the bar from the entrance of the hotel. It sounds like they are doing some renovations but should be opening back up in April with a really cool new set up! Thanks for all the info Jesse I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Level 9 Rooftop Bar is a pleasant and chill place to hang out. I went here while visiting San Diego with my roommate during the Thanksgiving holiday. Level 9 is located on the rooftop of the Hotel Indigo. I believe its on the 9th floor but I'm not 100% sure of that so please feel free to msg me and tell me if its not. The seating area itself is fairly large. It's littered with small firepits and also has a view of the surrounding downtown skyscrapers. The Petco Stadium is also within view. The loading room around the elevator is rather picturesque and is most definitely Instagram worthy. The food comes from Hotel Indigo's restaurant kitchen and is not too memorable. Drinks wise, the bar is a full bar (not much to say about it). Overall if you're wandering downtown San Diego and need a place to just drink and relax, Level 9 is the place to be. Also as a side note, you do not need to be staying at the hotel to visit this location. It's open to the public.
google avatar

Rosslyn C.

Yelp
There weren't many food options, but I did enjoy the service. The views of the baseball stadium are amazing. Also, the vibes make you want to stay for hours.
google avatar

Vlad V.

Yelp
I had a work conference in San Diego and we stayed at the Hotel Indigo in the Gas Lamp district. Level 9 Rooftop Bar is inside the hotel . . . you guessed it . . . on the rooftop! I stopped by for a drink before heading to dinner. San Diego is known for their weather so rooftops are ideal in the city. There is some seating, a fire pit, and a bar area. You see a great view of the Gas Lamp district from the rooftop. Drinks are a little pricey because it's a hotel bar but not egregiously so. They also had food but I didn't order any so I can't comment on that. If you're a fan of rooftops like I am, stop by for a drink.

Yelp
Kicked out U.S Veterans. Would not serve members who gave an incorrect address due to multiple moves in the past year. Called the police to escort our party out. Do not support this business.
google avatar

Ivan V.

Yelp
They would not accept my military ID and asked our party to leave. Absolutely disrespectful that they kicked out 5 active duty service members who are all over 21. I would not support this place nor recommend it to anyone.
google avatar

angela d.

Yelp
Such a fun time. Grant was great. Super knowledgeable and patient with my indecision on what to drink.
google avatar

Pat S.

Yelp
Kiana(Kiki), Grant and Alyssa are the best BEST. They make phenomenal drinks! The view is incredible and hospitality is on 100%. Definitely a go spot and you can see the baseball game from this spot.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
The servers were all attentive and nice! The drinks were delicious and reasonably priced. Same for the food! I was really surprised how good the burgers were. The atmosphere is awesome, great views, fire pits, couches and music.

Cory T.

Yelp
Lovely rooftop bar. Lots of heaters and open space. Beer and liquor selection is quite large for a hotel bar. Kiki and Grant were the absolute best bartenders! Felt like home.
google avatar

Christiena T.

Yelp
Kicked out our group of active duty military personnel and confiscated all of our drinks after incorrectly accusing two of our group members of being underaged. Would not recommend this establishment.

Kevin D.

Yelp
Another great visit to Level 9 ! A reoccurring theme is the outstanding customer service by the bar staff. They provide undivided attention to their customers and cocktails.Five stars to Grant and Kiki for making level 9 feel like my home town bar. Also appreciate me food menu.
google avatar

Rahi Y.

Yelp
...nothing to write home about. We ordered Manhattans, they serve drinks in plastic cups but the cocktails was not tasting really good, and prices were pretty on the higher side. I would skip the lounge and get my drink at one of the many bars in the Gaslamp district.
google avatar

Kathy H.

Yelp
Cute small rooftop bar with lots of seating areas, some with fire pits. Chill ambiance with views of the surrounding downtown and Petco stadium. Dog friendly hotel and dog friendly rooftop bar.
google avatar

Corina M.

Yelp
COVID APPROVED! Tables were spaced out & masks were required (unless seated). Sanitizer was provided & elevator signs restricting groups were posted. Enter the hotel up and take the elevator to the 9th floor. There were heat lamps, TVs and some pop 90's music playing when we visited on an early Friday evening. There were only 2 servers for the entire rooftop, so service was a bit slow & you could tell that they were busy. We arrived right before a Padres game started & the place was about 20% full. Within 20 minutes, every table was packed & people began to be turned away. Like other places, you have to order a food item with drinks. Not their fault, but it sucks you can't just grab some drinks... it was really awkward to have the food served in to-go boxes, a plastic bag and plastic utensils though. It just seemed odd since people had to order food and they were clearly hanging around to eat/drink. The views were awesome! You can see part of the padres stadium & a larger flat screen for the city to see the Padres game up-close. Love the open air & the fancier vibe of Level 9!
google avatar

Korin V.

Yelp
Location is great and the view is impeccable. Nice little glimpse of Petco park. There isn't tons of seating but there are nice comfortable couches surrounding a gorgeous fire pit. Pretty much just a place to go for a pre-cocktail and enjoy the view. Got the White Lenin cocktail which was so blah. Tastes like mild flavored water. But when your paying the typical $14 for a cocktail it should be at least worth drinking. The food also was sadly very disappointing. The food came up in a bag and boxes. NOT on plates!!! This is post COVID 19 and the entire state of California is open. So why is the food still being served in boxes and bags???!!! On top of the food coming in bags I felt like I ordered airport food. The salad was small portioned and was not freshly made. The flatbread was more like a crappy pizza. Definitely disappointing because the ambiance of this place is so amazing that this place could be a little piece of something special in SD.
google avatar

Tyler C.

Yelp
Great Views, Fancy Macerations and Dog Friendly 9th floor (of 12) in the Hotel Indigo. It's a bar with great views, including Petco Field. Good selection including California whiskey and 4 special house made drinks. Great for the hotel or Game nights.

Courtney M.

Yelp
Kiki at the bar is amazing. knew how to make every drunk, her personality was amazing!! Truly only coming back for her

Thomas E.

Yelp
Excellent service from Grant, Kiana and Alyssa . Of all my trips to San Diego they have made this one my best.

Navdeep G.

Yelp
Great place to unwind, lots of seating and rooftop views. Grant and Kiki were both so attentive and generous with our group. Will be coming back to see them again!

Mark J.

Yelp
Awesome bar with view of Perco Park. Bar tenders (Kiki, Alyssa and Grant) are the best!!!! Great drinks and perfect atmosphere for some drinks!
google avatar

Lita V.

Yelp
I'm hesitant to leave a good review because I don't want to ruin this space and have it become overcrowded!! But I gotta give credit where it's due, and have to say this is one of my favorite rooftop bars in downtown San Diego. It faces Petco Park so when we went during a Padres game, it was fun to look into the park and see what was going on while hearing the game at the same time too. We went when they just opened so it was very quiet and chill. They have fire pits and tables/seating with a tiny pet relief area in the corner. There was one bartender working and she was super nice. I got a San Diego Sunset cocktail and it was probably the best drink I've ever had. The kitchen was closed when we went so don't know if the food is any good, but you can bet I'm going to be going back here!
google avatar

S. Simone L.

Yelp
One star for the bartender and one star for the view. I ordered the Swipe Right ($15) but needed a substitute for the pineapple juice. The bartender suggested peach and that worked out well. The flavor of the drink was fantastic except for the fact that there seemed to be VERY LITTLE alcohol in the drink. More stars were not given due to the lack of alcohol, the dogs on the furniture (I mean could it still be "dog friendly" but keep them off of the sofas??) Also, the drinks were so weak, served in plastic tumblers (felt very cheap) filled to the top with ice, and overpriced considering the aforementioned. The view of PetCo Park is pretty cool; we could see home plate. If I were to recommend coming here, I would suggest only come of you are ordering beer, as it was reasonably priced and they can't screw them up (read: make them weak).
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
Really cool views of the gas lamp quarter area and stadium while on top of this open rooftop bar. They have a real nice lounge area with fire pits and comfortable seating. Bar area is nice and bar maids were very helpful. Drinks were average price for a city rooftop bar. Was a nice spot to unwind at the end of the night or to start your night out.

Hunter A.

Yelp
Save your money drinks are a rip-off, only upside was the bartenders are super friendly and great
