Boston Tourists Protest Lobster Roll Laced With Crawfish at Quincy Market | Eater Boston

"At the Boston & Maine Fish Company stall in Quincy Market I ordered a cold “lobster salad” roll and found the filling was a mix of lobster and crawfish tails rather than pure lobster — the Ambroses identified the lighter, rubbery flavor of mudbug rather than the rich, meaty flavor of lobster. After confronting staff and posting questions on the vendor’s Instagram (comments that were later deleted), the shop posted a clarification saying their lobster salad rolls are served with mixed lobster and crawfish meat, diced celery, mayonnaise, and lemon juice, and recommending the hot buttered lobster roll (made with 100 percent Maine lobster) for a pure lobster experience. Co-owner Andre Ornelas says the crawfish inclusion traces to a decades-old recipe from founder Larry Smith when the shop opened in Quincy Market in 1984 and that he preserved the recipe when he bought the stall in 1999; he maintains the lobster-salad mix is about 70% lobster and 30% crawfish, a ratio disputed by Lennie (who estimated much more crawfish). The lobster salad roll is currently $23.36 while the hot buttered lobster roll is $26.17; Lennie asked for a refund but was told to pick it up in person, and he, upset about what he perceived as deception, wants customers warned that the “lobster salad” is not entirely lobster." - Erika Adams

Google
For a market stall food place, they do a good but slightly expensive job. There is plenty of space to sit and relax in the market place. Lots of food stalls to choose from. We tried the chowder and lobster roll. About $45 but quite taster although if you are used to cuisine from the South such as New Orleans, you may want to bring some hot sauce 😉

Google
I ordered the steamer, lobster roll, and clam chowder, and honestly, the food was awful. Before ordering, I asked the guy in the picture how the steamers were—he said they were really good. Turned out they were full of sand and completely inedible. The lobster roll was just average—not what I expected at all. On top of that, the service was terrible. When I told the guy about the sand in the steamers, he just told me to rinse them with water. Definitely not coming back.

Google
I ordered the white fish with salads & later ordered rice pilaf. The fish was fresh but probably was cooked a while ago so it was pretty cold. The rice was not good. Salads ok so so

Google
The hot buttered lobster rolls are delicious. Sure, you’ll get more quantity and cheaper prices in other places but everything in the food hall is pricey. Plus, the line was shorter than the other lobster roll place nearby.

Google
I made a rookie mistake! Used to love Faneuil Hall and the food there. Yeah it’s always been a tourist trap food-wise, but I liked it. This was not good. The clam chowder was ok, the ginger ale was good (!) But the lobster roll was not. Not much lobster, covered in jar-lic, barely warm and not super fresh out of the pot, and on a roll that had sat. Not good. And the seating area was disguising. Fifty one dollars.

Erica Oliver-Peck

Google
We got a spot at the bar and then got a warm lobster roll. It was not good. Would’ve been a 1 star if it had not been for the clam chowder. That was delicious. Go elsewhere for a lobster roll! $40 for the meal deal, you’re better off trying one of the other spots here for that same amount of $ if you want a roll from Quincy Market.

Mon Ortiz

Google
The lobster roll was ok, but was not freshly prepared. Price was a bit high for the taste and experience.

Google
Best clam chowder I've ever had! The chowder itself is a great bang for your buck, but the the rest of the menu is a bit too expensive for what you get. The lobster rolls I had didn't meet my expectations. Next time I go, I'm just getting a big ol' bowl of chowda.
google avatar

Yelp
Best chowder in here. All others taste the same and are more watered down. Ask for free samples at each place and make your own decision. Thick, rich, full of clams and potatoes with a good flavor (for the type of touristy place it is!).

Yelp
I was only in Boston for a few hours but knew I needed to stop by Faneuil Hall. We got in line quickly and our food was served immediately. We got two hot lobster rolls, two cups of clam chowder and two drinks for $86. Snagged a bench outside the hall to eat and everything was delicious! Exactly what we needed before walking Paul Revere's trail!

Yelp
Overpriced lobster rolls? The place to go is Quincy Market in Boston. This place offered them while we were visiting. They had warm lobster rolls which sounded pretty interesting. There was a place to take away seafood items and a small seating area. There was a loud tv blaring in the background that faced the seating. The waitress served us a lobster roll. It honestly felt like she wanted to focus more time on talking to her friends instead of taking care of customer service. The lobster roll was like 30 bucks for a small portion. The bread was toasted/buttered but tasted generic (like bread I can buy at the grocery store). The lobster tasted pretty dry and didn't have anything mixed in with the lobster.

Yelp
Not bad, a little simple. Which is hard with lobster prices, anything sort of spectacular makes it seem like the wrong choice. Service is fine, and I think most everyone likes this location. If you gotta get lobster in the Market, probably here, but I'm not running back.
google avatar

Yelp
While walking through the various stalls at Quincy Market, I stopped at the first spot that had lobster rolls. It was so hectic, so I just wanted to get my food and eat without waiting in a long line. I got a Hot Buttered Lobster Roll with a Small Seafood Chowder for $38. This combo also came with a free drink, so I grabbed a bottled water too. Everything was served quickly and I was on my way. The lobster roll is solid for the price, but I found the dressing to be a bit too tart. The chowder was OK too as I wish I stuck with the clam chowder instead. Overall, it got the job done but not the best lobster roll around.

Yelp
Boston and Maine is a bar-like kiosk that serves amazing steam lobster. The lobster was more delicious than any high end restaurant in Boston. The oysters were also amazing. This small tiny place had like 4 beers on draft. We liked this place so much that we came back twice in our 4 day visit to Boston. I want to say special thanks to the lovely Brazilian food sever Pamila. She provided excellent service and her smile brightened our day.

Yelp
Not bad. Stopped in on a busy Boston Marathon weekend. Served very quickly. Two hot buttered lobster rolls. $30 each with chips. Rolls aren't cheap, so that was about right. Decent enough amount of lobster in big chunks. Generous butter. Surprised with all the minced garlic on it, but it kicked up the flavor a notch.
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
Lobster roll was stuffed with fresh lobster in a buttery roll. Clam chowder was creamy and loaded with clams. Hubs had the salmon and the filet FILLED the entire plate. Such a great value! Such great food!
google avatar

Shari D.

Yelp
Stopped here because of the sample of clam chowder soup. It was so good! Ordered the hot lobster roll that came with a clam chowder soup and a drink for $38. Not a bad deal. Soup was 10/10 but the lobster roll a 6/10. It needed butter. I think if it had melted butter to put on it would jump up to a 7.5
google avatar

Yelp
Very packed lines everywhere , I would rate the food 4/5 stars . The sea food gumbo is good but needs rice . Trendy place
google avatar

Yelp
We had fresh lobster and oysters. They chopped it up in front of us to make sure we can break open the shells with ease. Lots of good food here. Will come back for sure.

Golriz K.

Yelp
Absolutely Delicious New England Shrimp Roll! It's spendy though. The portion is not enough for one person. It's good to get it with soup.

Irene L.

Yelp
We had a hot lobster roll with garlic butter came with a bag of lays chips. The roll was amazing the butter soaked right in. Roll was around $32, draft Stella was $7.32. We sat at their lunch counter, was a super clean area. The staff was friendly and engaging. We went on a Monday afternoon around 2 pm; not busy at all in the hall; was able to walk around without bumping into people. They also had a combo plate with chowder and a soda for $42.
google avatar

Mark R.

Yelp
No! I'm from Boston and tried their cold lobster roll. One of the worst I've ever had, and I've had many. Go a few steps away to Boston Chowda, MUCH better!
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Wow!!! Lobster rolls with garlic butter! It was deliciously good and devoured quickly!
google avatar

Olivia P.

Yelp
Pretty good lobster rolls, but took forever to get one. In comparison to other spots around Quincy Market, it was also insanely overpriced, especially for the size.

Yelp
10-15-2022 We arrived early morning in Boston one day ahead of our cruise departure. As no rooms were available til 3 pm check in time,we joined a Hop On Hop Off tour and finished the circuit. Just so happens that stop #1 is also where the famous Quincy Market and Fanieul Hall is. Lunch? You bet! This eatery is the first on one end of entering. I waited by two stools and a counter while hubs got in line to place the order. Talk about swarms of people milling about. Boy were our expectations exceeded!!! Lobster rolls filled up to the ying yang with chunks of lobster meat, not shredded- holy cow! We also got creamy clam chowder and beverages. My lemonade was excellent. I had lobster twice during our cruise in Maine and on the ship but this seriously was the best.

Yelp
Hot Buttered Lobster Roll combo was SO great! This roll had a lot of bread, but I like that. The bread was hot and buttery. The lobster itself was a good portion, covered in hot butter with lots of garlic and seasonings! Great lunch! June 2023, the combo, with chips and a drink was around $31. Great value for the quality of food! They had lots of other things to pick from as well.

Yelp
This is located right inside of Quincy Market (in Faneuil Hall area), so it's in a popular location, surround by a lot of other eats. I was on the hunt for my first lobster roll, and this place popped up. They have multiple people taking orders, so if you pay attention to when people finish up, you can order fairly fast. I got the Hot & Buttered Lobster Roll. If you're deciding between the hot and the cold option, go with the hot one. I'm a total novice when it comes to lobster rolls, so I just asked the lady taking my order which was the more popular option. Lobster is pricey, though; the lobseter roll and chips (it comes with chips) cost upwards of $26. But this is to be expected. Overall, it was good! The roll was buttery, the lobster tasted fresh, and its meat was tasty. P.S. If you're in the mood for something on top of the lobseter roll, I recommend getting the combo since it comes with clam chowder for only a couple bucks extra :))

Yelp
This was my first time eating at boston & Maine fish co. To eat I had a hot Lobster roll and id rate it a 3.5 out if 5. The portion was great but as soon as I was given the roll it didn't seem to be cooked long enough. The taste was good. Hoping to come back for a second chance :)

Yelp
Was craving clam chowder so stopped by Quincy Market and decided to try Boston & Maine Fish Co. i was originally headed to Boston Chowda, but their small chowder was $10 (!) vs Boston & Maine Fish Co's was ~$6. Overall, a nice thick chowder base with plenty of potato chunks and seafood pieces. Not the best chowder I've ever had, but for the price, it was pretty good value
google avatar

Brooke H.

Yelp
There's tons of options in Quincy Market, but I was pretty set on lobster or shrimp. Even with narrowing in on type of food there's still multiple vendors to pick from. Boston & Maine had lined up cases full of lobster rolls, shrimp, and fish. Truthfully, it looked the freshest out of the vendors there. The guy that helped me was nice and I walked right up and was served. The 6 shrimp were not cheap, but they were good! I'd get them again. I sat outside and peeled them. The sauce had a kick to it and was perfect with the shrimp. Overall tasty - only reason for 4 stars is the price.
google avatar

Arlene T.

Yelp
We were visiting Boston and were so excited to try lobster rolls and clam chowder. When we got our order, our roll literally had mold on it! Once they gave us a new sandwich, lobster was chewy and underwhelming especially for the price. Clam chowder wasn't impressive either. Don't be fooled with this tourist trap.
google avatar

Yelp
Even inside of Crowd Food Court, their service was Pretty decent... Lobster is from Maine , each 1.25 lb , Steam it to service in front of you. Lobster Rolls has nice portion of Meat... Clam Chowder is Creamy ... Good to try me for sure will be back again In next Trip to Quincy Market, Boston
google avatar

Cierra G.

Yelp
They have some great shrimp cocktail. Large plump and sweet. Nice cocktail sauce that's basic but full of flavor. I also had the clam chowder and I have mixed feelings. The consistency and creaminess was perfect. Nice chucks of potatoes too but maybe I'm not a clam person but these were very rubbery/chewy. I didn't like the texture of the clams but the other aspects of the soup were great. Service was fast too!

Yelp
This place is in the Quincy market. Looking for a seafood lunch and this place didn't disappoint. I just wish we could have ordered more. We sat at the bar top at the end. Ordered chowder, shrimp and oysters. The gentleman that worked there shucked the oysters right in front of us and would check on us here and there. The food was good and the atmosphere was fun! If you are in the area stop in for a bite
google avatar

Shreya T.

Yelp
I have been to the place when I visited quincy market. Tried their lobster cakes tasted fresh and amazing. So many options to decide from. I would love to try their clam chowder next time.
google avatar

Jenn G.

Yelp
I ordered the hot lobster roll and a large order of their clam chowder. This did not disappoint. Everything was seasoned very well. The chowder had nice chunks of clam meat. Worth every penny. The atmosphere is very crowded and rushed, you kind of have to jump in to order. It's located in Quincy Market so it's very crowded and busy. They have a counter with a few stools.
google avatar

Sunny P.

Yelp
This location is in Quincy Market. There was no line when we were there and were served right away. The Clam Chowder was pretty good and so was the bread bowl. The bowl did break apart and was leaky. We were able to find a seat upstairs in Quincy Market to sit. It was cool to be in a historic building and eating greasy seafood.
google avatar

Yelp
First meal of my Boston trip. We went to Quincy Market as it's a popular food hall in downtown Boston and wow was it busy, even on a Wednesday lunchtime. Got the combo with the Lobster Roll, Clam Chowder and a Drink (~33). The chowder comes with oyster crackers which you can crush up and put inside. I really liked the chowder, lots of clams, very hearty. The lobster roll was delicious as well with a garlic toasted bun. Just very tasty overall, but the price is quite expensive for what you get imo.
google avatar

Young K.

Yelp
I personally think this is the better Lobster Roll shops in Quincy Market. The one downside eating at Quincy Market is finding a table or at least finding a seat to eat your lobster roll peacefully. When you eat outside (which is what my friend and I did), so many flies tries to get into our food. The clam chowder was way too salty for me, but it was very creamy. I personally liked the hot lobster roll more than the cold. The hot lobster roll was just smothered in seasoned garlic butter, and the cold lobster roll came out with some kind of coleslaw. It is better to get here by public transportation than driving over.

Yelp
Excellent Seafood Gumbo. Very filling. Superb price. I taste the New England clam chowder, it was buttery and flavorful. Clean and great customer service.
google avatar

Nancy D.

Yelp
If you're looking for a great lobster roll I am not sure this is the place. I recommend James Hook. For the amount of lobster this company gives you I would say do a few extra steps will be a much better roll.
google avatar

Gennie L.

Yelp
my friends and i got the lobster salad rolls and they were decent. they are certainly worth the price (~$26), but definitely not the best lobster i've had. portion sizes are generous and service is great. however, i wanted to get the warm lobster roll with butter, but they didn't have it which was a bummer. the chowder and shrimp cocktails looked pretty good. all the food was freshly prepared and we were served in a timely manner. there's always multiple people ordering at once so it can get chaotic at times, but the line moves fast. overall rating: 8/10
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
Chowder was decent and left a good impression. It passed the "spoon test" where your spoon can stand up straight in it! Flavor was was on point and a small size was very filling as it was full of clams and other ingredients. I would definitely come back here if I'm looking for a small but filling bite to eat!
google avatar

Torwah N.

Yelp
A very good lobster roll. In fact, it's better than Neptunes without the hyped lines and service
google avatar

Zeina E.

Yelp
The fiancé and I came across this place while visiting Boston this past January. The market was unfortunately still shut down for the most part due to COVID but we were able to order our food to go. This place is the first thing to pops up when you research "best lobster rolls" in Boston, and I can see why. You can either get a cold roll with a side salad or a hot roll with a garlic butter bun and a side of fries. We tried both and we couldn't decide which was better than the other. Yeah, they're that good! On top of that, DO NOT miss out on the chowder. That soup is rich, creamy and mouthwatering delicious. It was the perfect addition to a great meal! It's definitely on the pricy side but it's lobster and you are in Boston, so it's kinda expected. The staff was super friendly, covid cautious and efficient. Till next time!

Yelp
Lobster, buttery, garlic goodness on a roll, the Boston & Maine Fish Co is a Boston favorite for my husband and me. We love their Hot Buttered Lobster Roll and look forward to enjoying one every time we visit Boston. Located in Quincy Market, Boston & Maine Fish Co is a quick service establishment offering various seafood options to its guests. My husband and I visited them a few weeks ago for our first Boston/New England meal and opted for their House Special #1: Hot Buttered Lobster Roll. This included - Hot lobster meat on a toasted buttered roll - a cup of clam chowder - a drink The clam chowder was fantastic. Perfect size and loaded with clams and seafood. However, the obvious highlight was the lobster roll. Generously packed with buttery, garlic lobster all stuffed in a garlic roll. For someone who is a big fan of garlic, it hit home in all the right ways. The lobster pieces were the perfect texture and super tender. The only warning I may give is that our lobster and rolls were smothered in butter. Within 10 minutes of finishing our food, I could just feel the heaviness of the roll and butter consuming my insides. It took awhile to start to settle as we walked around town. This was the first time I've experienced this during my handful of times eating here over the years, so I'm hoping this most recent experience was just an off day. I would still recommend them if you're looking for a New England lobster roll and are in the Faneuil Hall area. Service is efficient and helpful. Boston & Maine Fish Go is one of the tasty and more distinct choices within Quincy Market. Go for it and get your lobster roll (or seafood) on! -
google avatar

Richard A.

Yelp
Ordered the fish chowder. It was absolutely delicious,. It was loaded with fish and very tasty. Considering the amount of fish and the size of the Portions, it was fairly riced T $7 The other positive is you have a place to stand and eat your soup
google avatar

Betty C.

Yelp
Great service and the clam chowder was very good; lots of clams and good flavor. Fast service!

Rachel M.

Yelp
Felt like a tourist trap. Lobster roll had way too much minced garlic. The roll was smaller than what I had at other locations and the lobster was very rubbery.
google avatar

Denise B.

Yelp
Lobster roll was hot and flavorful. Solid food spot in Quincy Market, would definitely eat there again.
google avatar

Jay B.

Yelp
Well it was our first time in Boston and this was the first place we tried a lobster roll and clam chowder. Our expectations going in weren't high but my goodness this place exceeded those expectations in every way. The price for a hot lobster roll and small clam chowder combo was $34 and while yes that's a lot you must know that that's the going market price around that entire area. The lobster roll was hot, fresh, and the garlic butter they put on top of it just sets this place a part from the other place we went to called Union Oyster House. The bland flavorless lobster roll alone at that place costs the same and that's without any clam chowder or drink included. And just like the lobster roll, the clam chowder was also better here than at Union Oyster House. It was thicker and meatier here compared to Union Oyster House where it was runny and barely any meat just lots of potatoes. This place is located in Quincy Market which can get quite packed so we'd recommend taking your order outside and finding a bench to sit and eat on and just people watch and enjoy the scenery and countless street performers.

P L.

Yelp
Excellent customer service! Service with a smile, good and delicious. The new England clam chowder is thick and Creamy how I like it. Definitely coming back!
google avatar

Barbie P.

Yelp
Not sure why I fell for it. This is a tourist trap with food court places with low quality. Clam chowder was mostly creamy/milky with very little clam flavor or clams. The whole lobster ($32) was likely a total of 1 pound with the head and tail meat alone, probably 1/4 pound. I thought I was going to get more value for the money given that it was a "fish market". But actually, it's more like a food court so try elsewhere. I ate both, don't get me wrong. But for the price and value, the quality was not worth it.

Phil R.

Yelp
If you want to be ripped off, buy a lobster roll from these crooks. They deceivingly mix CRAWFISH TAILS into their lobster salad to reduce the food cost. Criminals !
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
Amazing Chowder and Lobster Roll. Don't let the long line keep you from experiencing the delicious food!
google avatar

Xanthe P.

Yelp
Had to get a delicious, buttery lobster roll when in Boston and we chose a good one. Plenty of lobster, buttery, toasted bun, just what you want in a lobster roll. I decided to try 6 shrimp too. Great choice again! Fresh, tasty..really yummy!
google avatar

Katherine C.

Yelp
Right around Faneuil Hall in Quincy market, along the hubbub of folks shuffling, you'll find a few of chowda joints to go up to. We went right on 4th of July so maybe it made sense to avoid the crowds. I thought it was not bad! The price was definitely better than the chowder and lobster roll joint next door. They gave us a huge lemon and the combo was the best bang for the buck!
