My 4 Favorite Hostels in Boston (Updated 2025)

"Set in an old house a few miles outside the city center near the JFK Library, Boston Homestel offers simple, clean, and bright rooms and dorms with a quiet location that makes it easier to sleep than hostels in the heart of the city. The beds aren't the most comfortable and the facilities are basic — there is a common room and a small kitchen but not much more. It's laid-back and not very social, so don't come expecting a party." - Matthew Kepnes

Great old style Boston Hostel/Hotel. The room was small but very clean and neat. The bed nice. Late arrival, but no issues with communication and password to enter. For our single night stay it was perfect. Would recommend it, if you don't need fancy, or TV.

Homestel Boston is such a cozy, comfortable, and clean hostel! My stay there was great. My friend and I were warmly welcomed by the Brazilian volunteer, Luís — he helped us out, gave us tips and info about Boston, and even invited us to some parties.

This was the quietest hostel I've ever been to. It's a triplex home in a residential area. I booked a shared room, but I mostly had it to myself. In fact, I doubt there was anyone else on the entire floor. The bathrooms and kitchen were always really clean. I never saw any staff either. And they didn't reply to emails. But they kept it clean and did deliver on something I asked for. The beds and pillows were really ergonomic. The place felt high-end because of how clean and organized everything was. The paintings and small sculptures around the house were cute. Free oatmeal, tea, coffee. Plates, cups, bowls, microwave, and oven were there for cooking food. Free sunscreen and towel too. The location was really convenient. Only a few subway stops from the center of Boston. It's on a really quiet residential street, so it felt a little scary walking there at night with noone around. But the surrounding houses looked beautiful from the window. It was all really secure. Very quiet in the night, I had a good sleep. That's a great benefit of not being right in the center of the city. It felt a tad expensive at first, but since I ended up with the room mostly to myself it ended up being a killer deal. This provided a great base for a memorable trip to the Boston area. I had a nice, solitary stay, and I will miss it.

The area is a lovely residential neighborhoods, I felt safe walking in my way back to the hostel at night. The metro station connects you to south station, downtown, Harvard. Very easy to use. The staff were friendly and helpful. For the price I think it's pretty fair, and the house feels safe and clean.

This is a well run, perfectly comfortable Hostel that specializes in elegant community living. ||||The Hostel has squeezed bathrooms into all corners, the porches and kitchens and lounge are airy, light, and, whether a desk in a lounge, in a six bed room dorm, on a porch, there's always a congenial spot available to fire up the laptop and do a bit of business.||||And, I really hate to decrease availability, but the price is unbeatable.||||But, as everywhere, it is the superb, professional staff that ensures you will enjoy Boston, and always remember this little gem of a shared inn.||||Oh, and you will meet Marathon Runners, artists, scientists, and just a lot of fascinating world travelers.||||Michael Sol Pollens||Author, The Murders of Anonymity and The Miracle on Adams Street, and Three More Tales of Unrest.

The owners were impolite and disrespectful(Actually I am not a kind of person who leave reviews. It's my first time to leave a review on Google). On the day I arrived there, I asked about parking, but they didn't answer. I felt a bit bad, but I thought there might be some reason for that(Maybe they were busy so forgot to respond and so on). But, the next day I happened to drop my charger under the bed and asked them if I could get a long stick to get it out, but they ghosted me again. So I asked them why they didn't answer me continually and they told me that my questions were "common sense" ones so weren't worth answering. I was speechless and couldn't believe what I saw. I couldn't imagine how rude they are. I just arrived there a day ago, so it's natural that I don't know where the items are located. I can't understand why my questions were "common sense" ones. Even tho those were easy questions, I think they shouldn't respond in that rude and disrespectful manner, absolutely. Plus, before I visit there, I've been traveling for 2.5 weeks, but this was the only hostel where I cannot use an A/C. There was an A/C controller on the wall, but it was locked, so guests could not turn it on, so I couldn't sleep well coz it was too hot(I had to take out a chiller from the freezer to cool down my body). The owner made an excuse hard to understand saying that the day was an unusually hot day. Hey, now is June, summer. Finally, a guest put some trash in the wrong trash can by mistake, and a owner took it out from the can and started to scold the guest. I think she should just correct it and put the sign above the cans about what items should be put into which cans so that guests wouldn't be confused again. I guess the guest felt embarrassed and humiliated as well, being scolded and treated like that in front of others. Overall, their attitude toward guests was so unpleasant and I definitely don't want to go there again. Other than the location, I definitely don't want to recommend this place to others for sure. To you, 1. Don't write a novel with ur own prejudice. I didn't have any intention to blame staff, but it's ur obligation to know the parking rule near the area exactly, and let guests know about it, instead of blaming guests and avoiding responsibility of answering guests' questions. It makes sense guests can change their minds. At first, I'd like to secure parking space and ask you to reserve it coz i didn’t know how the parking situation is going in that area, but once I arrived there, I found that there was enough space on the street, so if possible, I wanted to park there and save the parking fee from the next day? Is that wrong? If u were guest, maybe you try to do the same. Be in others' shoes as a COMMON SENSE. 2. As I told you, I just arrived there less than 1 day, so I truly didn't know where the broom was. Even tho guests used the kitchen, they might not know where the broom was. You judged me I asked the question to bother you even tho I knew where it was. What a stupid judgement. You were the first one to ghost my question with ur own prejudice, and I am sure you will be the only one who does that in the future. U just don't have necessary manner. 3. I've visited many other accommodations so far, and it's true your house was the first one with NO A/C. Whether the weather is hot or not, guests should use it when they feel it's hot inside. Even tho you think it's not hot, that's your own thought, and not letting guests use A/C is out of sense with ur own thought, sacrificing guests' convenience to save ur electricity bill. 4. Lastly, before coming here, I asked if we could stay at the same room, and you proposed to offer the extra bed first and I accepted it. Don't you remember? And even tho it's nothing to do with the issue, honestly, charging $30 for extra bed per night is way too much. The price of the extra bed itself is less than $30 in second-hand markets. You said you dont judge, but you constantly judge with your own biase. Plzfix your rude attitude, and stop making excuses for ur fault.

At first I was weirded out of notes and warnings everywhere but soon place felt like home. Not the most convenient, AC was only in the room and in the room you have no privacy at all, best place you can put your stuff was under the bed. Door lock was very noisy. However it was only me and other guy on the whole floor and it felt like home, stayed for 3 days

I had to cancel my trip due to health reasons. Booked via Booking.com and tge fee was non-refundable, yet they still refunded half. They said they found someone else for half the booked nights. They were more generous then they had to be, which is all too rare these days.
