Where to Eat the Best Caribbean Food in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"This no-frills fast-casual spot on Tulane serves jerk chicken, homemade beef patties, brown stew fish, and other hearty Jamaican eats. For something different try the slow-stewed curried goat or chicken with roti, a soft, flaky flatbread that’s a cross between roti and naan." - Beth D’Addono

Google
Food was good but they gave me 2 of these small plates for $48 not including drinks… Disrespectful. That’s $25 per person

Google
I enjoyed my shrimp roti. The roti skin gets a b+ only because my bestie is Trini and I mastered making roti. So far the best I’ve had since I moved back home.

Google
Food was spectacular. Service and knowledge of dishes, spot on. The owner was extremely nice. Both my husband and I had the oxtails, rice & peas with fried plantain. We are definitely going back for the goat but, we have to get there early, this dish will sell out fast. Probably be heading back on Monday. A must try. I promise you will not be disappointed.

Google
Please if u are hungry, this is not the place. The potions are ridiculously small.for the price .curry goat is ok .. but oxtail gravy extra thick. Talked to manager but she didn't do anything to make up.like extra side dish or discount... Poor customer recovery...we came hungry and left hungry....... We been to Caribbean spots but food quantity was reasonable...

I'm thrilled to share my exceptional experience at Boswell's Jamaican Grill in New Orleans, a hidden gem that has become my go-to spot for delicious and authentic Jamaican cuisine. As a vegetarian, I was a bit skeptical about trying a Caribbean restaurant, but I was blown away by the variety of options and the quality of the food. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by the warm and welcoming staff, who were happy to answer all my questions about the menu and make recommendations. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate, with a lively vibe that's perfect for a night out with friends or a romantic dinner. The menu at Boswell's Jamaican Grill is a love letter to Jamaican cuisine, with a wide variety of options that cater to all tastes and dietary needs. As a vegetarian, I was impressed by the number of options available, including delicious vegetable patties, flavorful curries, and hearty stews. I opted for the vegetable patty, which was served with a side of rice and peas and a delicious mango salsa. The patty was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a flavorful blend of spices that was both aromatic and delicious. The rice and peas were perfectly cooked, and the mango salsa added a sweet and tangy touch to the dish. I was also impressed by the portion sizes, which were generous and filling without being overwhelming. The prices were also very reasonable, making Boswell's Jamaican Grill a great value for the quality and quantity of food you receive. What truly sets Boswell's Jamaican Grill apart, however, is its commitment to serving authentic and delicious Jamaican cuisine that is also respectful of vegetarian dietary restrictions. The owners are clearly passionate about their cuisine and their community, and it shows in every aspect of the restaurant. I was particularly impressed by the attention to detail and the care that the staff took in preparing my meal. They were happy to answer all my questions and make recommendations, and they even offered to modify the dish to suit my dietary needs. Overall, I would highly recommend Boswell's Jamaican Grill to anyone looking for a delicious and authentic Jamaican meal in New Orleans. The restaurant is a true gem, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, delicious food, and a commitment to serving high-quality cuisine that is respectful of all dietary needs. Rating Breakdown: Service: 5/5 Food: 5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Value: 5/5 Overall: 5/5 Recommendation: If you're looking for a delicious and authentic Jamaican meal in New Orleans, look no further than Boswell's Jamaican Grill. With its warm atmosphere, expertly prepared food, and commitment to serving high-quality cuisine that is respectful of all dietary needs, this restaurant is a true gem in the city. Be sure to try the vegetable patty and don't be afraid to ask for recommendations - the staff are happy to help.

Google
I moved away from Louisiana in 2020 and Ive been SEARCHING for a Caribbean/ Jamaican restaurant as good as this establishment for YEARS. I still haven't found one to even come close. If you’ve never been I implore you to stop by. Good vibes great atmosphere, the BEST food around. And the best part is… they treat you like family the moment you walk through the door.

Menu is not up to date even though it was uploaded 4 months ago. Oxtail is $29, not $19. Amazing food, superb flavors, spicing, and sides. Super cute interior, would recommend eating in.

Google
As someone who dated someone from Jamaica and lived in Brooklyn for years, I’ll share this: I’ve been coming to Bowell’s since it opened; however! the food and service is inconsistent, sometimes you’ll get pure rudeness with a tasty meal and / or kind service and bland food. They often run out of things on the menu. Since I know what true Jamaican food tastes like I’ll give this place an honest 2/3 out of 5 as of today* I also hope they aren’t selling the people of New Orleans short, under the impression we are from the south and they may think* we don’t know what Jamaican food and culture encompasses Expect to spend 20/50 for one of two people for a dish&drink and definitely don’t expect a large portion. 1 love

Yelp
Great food. I had the BBQ jerk chicken that was both tender and tasty. The mac and cheese was just alright, it wasn't terrible. It was a little dry and didn't have as much cheese as I would have liked. I enjoyed the plantains and the French fries. The server was attentive. It's a very clean restaurant. I love the vibrancy in the decor. I will definitely come again.

Yelp
If Jamaican flavor is what you are looking for, this is the right place! The place is painted with gorgeous murals that pay homage to the Jamaican culture. I have hd jerk chicken before but this was the best I have ever had! HANDS DOWN!!!

Yelp
The food tasted really good. I loved the oxtails and macaroni it was flavorful. I got my food really fast. The woman at the counter was very polite, kind and welcoming. I will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
Been coming here since 2017. Tastes like ochi. Fish supreme, oxtails juicy, patties are spicy and crisp and the jerk is perfect. Everything nice

Yelp
I often come from the Northshore to come to this restaurant once I take care of my business in the area. When I usually come to this restaurant it always seems to be the longest wait with nobody waiting. The food is really good but the service is really bad. Often times, the wait staff of preoccupied with conversations, in the kitchen, or watching television in the dining area. I would give this restaurant a high rating but the quality of service received here needs to improve. Seems like every time I've come the wait has gotten much longer than the previous visit. I encourage you if you want some good Jamaican food that is reasonably priced and have a very long time to sit and wait for the spot for you.

Yelp
The food was hot and came out in less thank 5 minutes for my to go order. The negative...broth/gravy from my order was spilled all in the bottom of my bag, I asked for vegetables but got cabbage instead, my oxtails w/ peas has one literal pea in it, and the oxtails lacked flavor. The music playing fit the vibe well. I usually do another Jamaican grill up the street but wanted to try here but unfortunately...I won't be back.

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. When getting a $22 plate sometimes not everything on it is a standout. Some things might be alright and others really good. Not here! Everything on this late was outstanding. From the plantains that were so fresh they melted through the styrofoam, to the oxtails that melted in my mouth. Everything was amazing. My wife said when she walked in they made her feel like she was family and right at home. It's a vibe and they have great food too.

Yelp
Great place to enjoy some good authentic carribean cuisine. Food is made fresh to order.

Yelp
I ordered the oxtails & broad beans with Mac & cheese & callaloo medley. This was my first time trying oxtails, so I didn't know what to expect. The oxtails were seasoned ok, but they were very fatty. The Mac & cheese had cheese, but lacked flavor lol. The callaloo medley was really good. My significant other originally ordered the snapper, but we later in found out they were out of it. So he ordered the jerk chicken with rice & peas, & callaloo. He thought it was really good. Wasn't a long wait & food was fresh. Both meals came with two plantains. I didn't really like their version of the fruit punch drink. Would try them again.

Yelp
I was looking for Jamaican food on a Monday and I was surprised to find this place open. The restaurant was very clean staff was kind and the food was flavorful. We had the oxtails, jerk chicken, rice & peas, and Mac. I will definitely be back!

Chaunc W.

Yelp
Me and my family were looking for a place to eat or our first day in New Orleans and we found this place, and I need to say it was amazing! Everything was well seasoned, the French fries were the best I've ever had, and the beef patty and plaintains were perfect and the workers are extremely polite I recommend
google avatar

Shakita W.

Yelp
Wow... from the rudeness to the food. I don't like leaving bad reviews but I can't let y'all get away lol. Oxtails was tender that's how they got 1 star Whew ...but nasty, cabbage no taste...Mac no taste All the salt was on the oxtails.

Yelp
I am so glad I got the opportunity to work at a school that wasn't far from this place today. I won't say I was thinking about this place the entire time I was working but it was definitely on my mind . Same hole in the wall that I remember from a few years ago. I ordered the jerk chicken plate ( to go) which of course came with the rice and peas and plantains. I also got an additional order of the rice and peas. Before getting back on the road for two and a half hour drive I decided to taste the rice and peas and it was delicious. My plan was only to eat a couple of spoonfuls but I ended up eating just about all of it. I did eat some more once I returned home. Everything was really good and most definitely looking forward to eating at Boswell's when I returned to New Orleans to work.

Yelp
I am extremely disappointed with this Jamaican restaurant. It claims to be authentic, yet it lacks any genuine Jamaican meals. The patty crust was far from authentic, with a sad texture and lack of flavor. The filling was also tasteless, leaving much to be desired. The overall quality of the meal was unacceptable. I strongly urge the management to improve the standards and authenticity of their food. This experience was a letdown, and I believe the restaurant should be held accountable for serving these blain flavorless dishes! You all need to do better! Get a different chef this is not Jamaican food!

Phillip M.

Yelp
Definitely avoid this place. Bad location, cheap looking inside and out.No ambience Slow service, ok food. Bad location
google avatar

Peyton C.

Yelp
The food is always great here! I usually order the jerk chicken with cabbage and rice and peas. Sometimes they run out, but if you get there earlier in the day you can grab some beef patties. Those are my favorite, especially the spicy ones!

Yelp
I have heard about Boswells for a while and even someone from the Caribbean had suggested I go here so I was in the neighborhood and decided to check it out. Overall, good food with good flavor and seasoning I got the jerk chicken, plantains, the ital plate and the veggie patty. The plantains were some of the best I've ever had anywhere in the city; the pie had a nice crust and good flavorful filling; i was told the jerk chicken was ok but better with the spicy sauce; and for the ital plate the spinach and cabbage were really good but the rice was not Overall good and flavorful Caribbean food

Darlene H.

Yelp
The food here is delicious. Try the Jerk chicken. The service is good too. I will be back for the oxtails.
google avatar

Kendra T.

Yelp
Food was very mediocre to say the least..I had the oxtails (19.25) they were very small and fatty pieces..I also got the brown stew chicken plate (14.95)which included a very small leg, thigh and piece of small chicken back. Each plate came with choice of 2 sides..the rice and peas was very dry..Callaloo and Mac and cheese were okay..I've included pictures but we had already started eating the oxtails

Yelp
I've been here once before and the food looks, smells and tastes like authentic Jamaican food unlike that of Island Paradise in Gretna. The customer service at these Jamaican joints are always subpar but the food here is always on point. Entrees come with with two sides. I ordered curried goat and oxtails with peas and rice and mac n cheese. Unlike other restaurants, they have "soul food" side options too like mac n cheese and calalloo (similar to collard greens). I think I'll try the calalloo next time for a side. The prices are very reasonable and aligned with what I'm used to spending for these dishes. Their meat patties are delish and they have more varieties than the traditional spicy and mild. They offer chicken and veggie as well. If you dine-in and enjoy your meal, free refills on tea and lemonade is self served. This has now become my fav go to for authentic Jamaican food.

Belinda L.

Yelp
Had lunch here today. I had the oxtails with peas and rice and Mac and cheese. My friend had the stewed chicken with steamed cabbage. It was absolutely the best. I definitely recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

Charles W.

Yelp
What a great first full meal in nola. I got the combo of pork and chicken with 2 sides of rice and beans and veggies. Delish:)
google avatar

Munzer Q.

Yelp
The lunch here is a buffet loaded with Jamaican food. Salad Fruits Two different rices Jerk chicken Beef two ways And much more. In addition you can get items off the menu and the meat pies, those are yummies. The seating is great and the staff is very helpful. Also the buffet items change daily. Enjoy a slice of Jamaica.

Yelp
Delicious af Curried Chicken, side of Side of Jamaican Rice and Peas, side of macaroni, Fried Plantains
google avatar

Myla M.

Yelp
Delicious oxtails. I dip my Mac n cheese in the oxtail gravy 10/10. Perfect plantains. Usually pretty quick and always friendly service.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious! The rice n peas had just a touch of pepper and was fantastic. Beef patties were great nice n flaky. Curry shrimp was awesome and we loved it. Kids had jerk chicken plate and loved it as well. Wish Boswells was near us in California. Great find in LA. Highly recommend.

Ericpaul D.

Yelp
i recently stopped eating at boswell due to price gouging the menu. like curry goat $32.00 from $17=19.00 just a few years ago....i went to ny/nj last week where Jamaican food is king....there its $17.00 for a large plate of curry goat. i know of no mass killing of goats or slaughter of goats for health reasons so it must be greed.....so why the very high price??

Yelp
Sometimes my mouth eats before my camera. (Un)fortunately that always happens when I eat at Boswell's. Since shelter in place, I've been ordering from Boswell's through third party delivery and I have yet to be disappointed. I always go for the jerk chicken with mac and cheese + steamed veggies, plantains, and a spicy beef patty on the side. The food is so good and authentic, it brings me back to the beaches of Negril. They still aren't open for dine-in customers, so you'll have to settle for delivery and pick up. I'm hoping that they'll also bring back their lunch buffet once restrictions are lifted, because what could be better than a Jamaican buffet????
google avatar

Chasity M.

Yelp
One of the best Jamaican spots in the city! From the beef patties (mild is great but I love the spicy ones!) to the super authentic beverages, Boswell's has delicious Caribbean staples to satisfy your cravings. I've only ever gotten takeout or UberEats from Boswell's (pre and post-COVID) but the high quality has always remained the same. The food is hot, drinks are chilled and everything is perfectly packaged. No spills! On Fridays, I love getting their fried fish plates. Rice and peas, mac and cheese and plantains are some of the best sides. But you have to get a side of coco bread as well, its the perfect addition to their hearty meals. I love that they sell Ting, since it is by far my favorite Caribbean sip. 5 stars for Boswell's across the board for me. Eating their dishes feel like receiving a big, warm hug from your loved one.
google avatar

Victoria A.

Yelp
This is a tucked away spot. I was a little worried when I saw no cars parked out front. They are not seating still (probably due to COVID) but we saw a few guest waiting for their food once we entered. I got the jerk chicken, macaroni, and greens. My fiancé got the oxtails with beans and callalo (I believe that's how it's spelled). While waiting for our food we decided to share a spicy patty. IT WAS AMAZING. We had to purchase 2 more. The food looked beautiful even in styrofoam! It was just as good to eat. We definitely will be back
google avatar

Shanita F.

Yelp
Everything here is mouthwatering!!! During lunch, they serve buffet for $10! Ackee and salt fish on Fridays!!!
google avatar

Yelp
I had oxtails taste like rice and gravy big huge beans weird combo the Mac and cheese was good I'll give two stars for that but the was real messy Jamaican Jerk House make them look terrible won't be eating here against

Yelp
It is a laid back place, and it takes some time and effort to get any service; you have to make yourself known it seems. They were doing a vigorous takeout and delivery business, and you might have better luck ordering in advance. But assuming you aren't expecting anything fancy, this Jamaican place offers cheap and interesting food. They offer an "Ital plate"; a shortened form of the word "vital" which denotes a Rastafari concept of clean eating. And don't get me wrong, I like New Orleans food, but it is pretty indulgent and I was happy to give this alternative a shot. The plate is primarily a callaloo, a red beans and rice dish that tastes quite different from New Orleans style red beans and rice, in this case being rather light and possessing a warm, hearty aroma that smelled like some long-forgotten home. It was accompanied by some fried plantain, braised greens of some sort, and cabbage. Again, not fancy, but it was delicious, a full takeout container for the money, and I felt good after I ate it. It's not a vegetarian restaurant, but they have a few other such menu items that I might try.
google avatar

Yelp
This was my first time here. Bright colors you'd associate with Jamaica outside and inside. Small outside patio, kind of set back on Tulane, not much street parking and small lot in front. Its small inside, too. Maybe 8 tables and a bar in the middle of the room. Bare bones is ok with me as long as the food is good. A buffet was offered with a couple of chicken dishes, some fried fish, Mac and cheese, rice, etc. Its a place where you don't know if they have servers or if you just order at the bar or station, so as I was getting up to get menus, someone was walking toward me with menus. We ordered off the menu, jerk chicken for me with sides of Mac and cheese and rice and peas. Plantains come with, too. The lady ordered oxtails with the same sides. The chicken was really good, and the jerk sauce really added some flavor. The oxtail was of course, delicious. Getting the check was similar to getting menus.... no one came forward, so I went to the bar and got rung up. The food is REALLY good.

Yelp
The poor customer service will run this business into the ground. I've been visiting Boswell's over the last 6 years and never dealt with this. The older gentleman was not there this afternoon. Instead, a young lady with locks took my order. She was rude. I got there early, sat in my car because I knew I was early and walked in around 10 minutes before the food was ready. She went on to tell me it will be 25 minutes before I got my to go order. I responded by saying "but I called it in." She said "you want raw or cooked fish??" I didn't say anything. Her karma came when she slipped on the wet floor on her way out of the kitchen. She got upset when I said "God don't like ugly" and told me my comment was unnecessary. I understand that good customer service is hard to find these days, but this is ridiculous. Boswell's is too good to employ just anybody. I even asked for a refund and decided not to worry about it because A. I know just how great this business is when the people who actually care about it is running it and B. I would have had to be there even longer because they appeared to have issues with canceling the order. I just hope the food is worth all of this because, nah.

Lauren F.

Yelp
Food is delicious but painfully slow. Service is with a smile-about half the time. Their rotis are my favorite! His curry is my favorite Jamaican curry in the city. There's a buffet on weekdays at lunch. Dress lightly; seems to always be very warm inside of the restaurant.
google avatar

Christopher W.

Yelp
Covid has affected my review of Boswell. The star of the show here was the great lunch buffet. Since covid Boswell has had no buffet and you have to take it to-go or eat it on the tables on the porch. All the proteins are now mediocre. I had the brown chicken stew today that was pretty flavorless. The veggies on the other had are still glorious. The rice and peas, greens, plantains are all great. The veggie plate of the full platters is probably the best deal here. Next time I come for lunch will probably do the meat pie and greens.
google avatar

Jim K.

Yelp
Authentic Jamaican. They even have a picture of Sintra Arunte on the wall. Meat patty was great. They were out of cocoa bread. The the goat roti was really good. Lot of bones in it but that may be normal; It was my first time having it.
google avatar

Mikesha H.

Yelp
Usually go in there to do Uber eats for delivery pick up and decided to give it a try. Had the curry shrimp with Mac n Cheese with rice n beans and a side jerk chicken leg quarter and it did not disappoint. I was really being greedy so it took me 3 days to eat it. It was worth every penny and I will be back.
google avatar

Meagan J.

Yelp
I must admit that Boswells is my favorite Jamaican Spot in the city. The food is always fresh and flavorful since they make it to order. My favorites are the oxtails, jerk chicken, rice and peas, and macaroni. The service and customer service can certainly improve. The food overpowers the lack of customer service but it's still would be great. The owner could be more engaging be friendly or at least the servers. I sometimes walk in confused as to what to do. Do I sit or wait to be seated? But at the end of the day I always end up there for authentic food and let me not forget the amazing meat pies and coco bread. YUM
google avatar

DG S.

Yelp
Hubby and I were craving some Jamaican food, so we went to Boswells. This was not our first time, but it was since the pandemic. Boswells is pretty consistent with the food and flavors. It is not "OMG Spectacular" but is it good comfort food that is consistent. Which I can appreciate. The service is still carry out only. It is wise to place your order in advance because they cook to order. The food was nice and hot. No real complaints here.
google avatar

Ashanta L.

Yelp
The vegan plate was so good. I will definitely buy from this place again. Would recommend to friends/family.

Jose G.

Yelp
Taste was ok but portions were absolutely horrible!!! I ordered a platter half oxtail and curry chicken and I literally received 2 TINY pieces of oxtail and 3 small pieces of chicken that were cut in half so technically it was one whole piece of chicken that was cut into 3 pieces. I paid almost $18 for this platter!!! I don't recommend this place at all! NOT WORTH IT!!!!
google avatar

Jasmine M.

Yelp
Oxtails are so good! They give you a good amount of food for the dinners. I've also had the curry goat and that did not disappoint either.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
This food was everything. I pre ordered so there was no wait. Will definitely return!
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
I don't have much to add to my previous review, but I ordered again from Boswell's, and it was hot, fast, and delicious. The chicken is so tender, the rice is especially good with the greens and the additional sauce, and the fried plantains are the perfect little side dish/dessert. Yummy!

Yelp
Some colleagues mentioned the delicious food they had at this restaurant, so I decided to check it out for lunch. It's located in a transitional area along Tulane Ave, where construction (currently) abounds. Thankfully, there is off street parking right out front. When you walk in, the restaurant is spacious, with individual tables as well as a bar area for dining. Speaking of bar, they have a modest array of liquors for purchase in addition to a wide selection of soft drinks and juices. I went for the lunch buffet. On the day I visited, it included a green salad along with assorted fresh fruits: grapes, pineapple & watermelon. The hot entrées were: white rice, rice & peas, stewed chicken, curry chicken, jerk chicken and cabbage. The cost was very reasonable for the buffet at $11.00. Truthfully, I tried a bit of everything, which was a good call...all delicious. The hot items were all seasoned very well and were quite flavorful. My favorites were the cabbage and curry chicken (tender, juicy and very flavorful). One bonus: you can get the lunch buffet to eat in -OR- to take out! They have styrofoam containers for those of us on the go! Great idea!

Jasmin B.

Yelp
Good food, fast service. Love the Mac and cheese and jerk chicken. Definitely a good spot to try out
