Botanica Restaurant Column: We Left Our Dream Jobs to Open a Restaurant Across the Country | Bon Appétit

"Run by editors-turned-owners Emily Fiffer and Heather Sperling, this airy all-day café in Silver Lake champions a vegetable-first, “healthyish” approach that treats produce with the same care typically reserved for meat and seafood; the menu balances lavish vegetable and grain dishes with Pacific seafood and sustainably raised meats, and the beverage program emphasizes natural wine. Born from a gut-renovated 1940s liquor store after the duo moved from Chicago and rallied friends, supporters, and a talented crew, the operation now includes a market component and a roughly 50-person team devoted to food, coffee, cocktails, ceramics, florals, and music. The owners prize a supportive, women-led workplace—small gestures like hugs, cookies, and generous pours underscore their focus on staff and guest care—and the kitchen’s resilience was memorably on display during a power outage when cooks seared lamb kabobs on a backup stove while friends provided music and ambiance. Signature details mentioned by the owners include a vadouvan cauliflower dish (they still tweak it with curry leaves) and an attention to staples like matcha, all of which reflect a mission to weave health, nourishment, and creativity through every aspect of the restaurant." - ByEmily Fiffer and Heather Sperling

We had the most beautiful wedding here! It's a small venue, very intimate. All the green space meant the only decorating I had to do was to personalize the space. The food was excellent, Spanish style, not your typical wedding food. We also got to go down to Bordel before they opened for photos, which turned out amazing! HUGE shout-out to Cassandra, our event manager. She immediately put us at ease, saw our vision, and was so responsive and helpful throughout the entire process. She normalized the requests I had that I thought were "silly" and was more excited to see me in my wedding dress than most of our guests. Give this woman a raise!! Xo

As a wedding photographer, I have to say that Botánico is an incredible venue for a smaller wedding or other intimate gatherings. I photographed a wedding here in fall 2024, and it was such a great experience. Everyone who worked at the venue was helpful and lovely to work with. Plus, the space itself is beautiful, elegant, and cozy. I highly recommend Botánico!

Botanico Chicago is one of my absolute favorite spots for intimate weddings in the city. Tucked away in the heart of Wicker Park, it feels like a secret garden hideaway—an enclosed rooftop oasis that somehow feels worlds away from the bustle of the city below. With two private event spaces, Botanico offers a seamless flow for celebrations: a beautiful ceremony space, an area for dinner and drinks, and then back to the ceremony space for dancing under the stars (or twinkle lights!). It's a truly unique layout that’s perfect for couples looking for something intimate, stylish, and unforgettable. Cassandra is always on-site and ensures everything runs smoothly. As a wedding officiant, it’s such a gift to work with someone so professional and warm—she really helps make the day feel effortless. I also love the second-floor space with its moody, romantic vibe. It’s the perfect little getaway for the couple to enjoy a few quiet moments alone before the celebration kicks off. The only thing to keep in mind is the long flight of stairs up to the third floor, but once you arrive, you’ll understand why it’s more than worth the climb. Every time I officiate a wedding at Botanico, it feels like a true privilege.

I had the privilege to host my wedding at botánico on 07/14… I just can’t get enough of how beautiful this place is! It was just a magical moment! The service was excellent and the food as well! Cassandra the event manager was the sweetest and always got back to me asap to answer questions. Overall I would definitely recommend Botánico for your more small intimate events! Love it!

Really cool private event space above Bordel. Loved the dining space that looks down on Division street and the private green space in the back makes you feel like you're not in Chicago. Really a fantastic venue. Check it out.
