This South Bay Farmers Market Faces an Uncertain Summer in Cupertino | Eater SF

"I learned that Botbar is opening a new downtown Sacramento location and will bring its Wall-E-like robotic servers with it; the coffee shop's website says, “At Botbar, we envision a future where people are liberated from monotonous tasks, allowing them to focus on what truly matters,” and the robot's resume on the site lists attributes like “passionate about service” and “reliable — never takes a sick day.”" - Justine Jones

Botbar coffee was not as expected and it left me disappointed. The staff had trouble with the Bot and it took three times to make an Americano. The Bot kept saying “American Failed.” It flung its arms around crashing into the coffee machine and the staff had to manually pull the arm away and reset. The Bot never actually made it correctly, it had to be finally made by a human being that worked there. I was initially curious and excited. And then after I left re-assured that only humans can make coffee correctly. Good gimmick, didn’t work and actually the Bot actually made more work for the “Real” workers. Coffee was subpar, nothing exceptional.

We really enjoyed our experience here! The food was delicious...we ordered a buttermilk blueberry muffin that was warm and soft and delicious. We also shared a gourmet sandwich, which was also heated and crunchy. We had 2 coffees that were really good and not too sweet (which is perfect for us). The coffee robot was fun to watch. The space in the back was delightful. We sat by the fir and enjoyed the calming vibe. Parking was easy to find at the nearby Capitol garage. Overall, a great time!

Google
It's a robot making coffee! He was so polite and good at his job. I look forward to serving our coffee making overlords. Will be back!

Google
Had their matcha latte during lunch and it was good. There’s plenty of space in the back to work or study and there’s plenty of outlets. Nice hidden gem

Google
Pretty cool. Input and pay for your order through the kiosk. Then wait for the robot to dispense it to you. We ordered two lattes however, I didn’t see an option to get a large size cup. I’m assuming the small cup size was the standard. Another thing was I didn’t see an option to customize the milk or sweetness level. Not a problem for us though. The store hours listed they close on weekends which is a bummer bc it’s located across the street from the state capitol. They would probably be busy and have a nice crowd on the weekends. There is also an employee on site just in case you need to order pastry and such.

Me and my friend were travelling and driving all the way down, from Alaska. Our car broke down in the sunny city of Sacramento, so we had to fix it up. At the same time, we decided to go for a refreshing walk, where I had to go and find a place to powder my nose. Me and my friend quicky found the Botbar Coffee – restroom was very clean and had everything needed. Once I got done, I came to see my friend and very friendly barista made iced drinks for us, on house – it completely made our day and refreshed our throats. Thank you so much for such hospitality! Peace from Alaska!

The robot barista is the whole reason you walk through the door… and honestly, the only reason. The staff can be super friendly and helpful—but it’s DIY unless you wave someone down. Botbar is serving “figure it out, human" vibes. Botbar is sleek and cozy, even if it feels like the caffeine-pouring Terminator might glitch and go all Skynet. 🤖 But the robot is the star of the show, and watching it make your drink is weirdly hypnotic. The coffee though? Oof. If you like your latte to taste like a melted dessert menu, you’re in luck. Even the “not sweet” drinks come sugar-slammed like they’re trying to win a state fair ribbon. So if you're into robotics and type 2 diabetes—congrats, you’ve found your happy place. How I break down my ⭐️ reviews: 1 - No. Not if it was the last thing on DoorDash. 🗑️ 2 - Meh. Maybe if I’m desperate, close, and high. 😬 3 - Mid. Not texting the group chat about it. 🤷‍♀️ 4 - Hella solid. Planning my next visit. 😋 5 - Shut up and take my money. Om Nom Nom. 🔥

Google
One of the best matcha I’ve had in downtown. Smooth, floral and they actually use ceremonial grade. The robot barista is super cool

Yelp
Well, I Tried It. Not Too Impressed. Pro/Cons: Pros: * Novel experience, cute once or twice. * Very clean, very spacious operations * Nice people monitoring the robot coffee-maker * Right across the street from the State Capitol building, so eminently convenient to downtown staffers CONS: * First, Coffee is overly expensive, even more than my average Starbucks purchase (surprised at this, honestly) - and there is a Starbucks just two blocks down from this spot * Second, there are several independent coffee houses with a few block radius that are more worthy of your patronage * Finally, this place has the look of a tourist attraction, not exactly a friendly, lived in warm coffee house THE LOWDOWN Look, I get it: if you haven't been here before than it's worth coming by your first time, and perhaps bring a friend or family on your next trip for a giggle or two.

Yelp
The robot was cute and fun. It was my first time seeing a robot make/serve coffee, and it was unique. The staff was friendly too, and the service was quick. The place was big too; they had lots of tables and chairs in the back. I ordered a Coconut Latte and Bacon Egg Bagel. Unfortunately, the robot didn't make my drink, which was a bummer. The drink was okay. There wasn't a lot of coconut flavor, and the coffee wasn't strong. The bacon egg bagel was fine and a bit pricey; it tasted prepackaged and old. Overall, Botbar Coffee has a cool concept. They had a variety of food and drinks, but the prices were a bit high.

Yelp
The funny thing about this place is it isn't the bot that makes this place a good place. It's the service. Incredible service and some pretty decent muffins! The coffee was unremarkable, but the experience watching the robot is a lot of fun. FOOD: The coffee was only okay. I have to rely on my wife's assessment since I don't drink coffee, but I had to come to watch it and it made the drink perfectly. I ordered the chocolate muffin and it was really good. SERVICE: Exceptional. The woman who helped me was so nice and gave me a slice of banana bread for free for coming in the first time. It was super easy to order. You just order from a kiosk, but the woman helping me made it easy and answered every question. And the ambiance is great. I mean who doesn't love a giant robot serving them coffee? COST: Reasonable. I'm shocked at some of the negative comments. Overall, the robot could be faster and they could have a better selection, but it's certainly not deserving of some of the negative comments.

Yelp
First time I came, I accidentally spilled my iced coffee everywhere and he made me a new one for free. This recent time, my coworker brought me back an iced matcha. So refreshing and such sweet service every time I come in.

Yelp
Fun coffee shop where a "robot" greets customers at the counter and makes your coffee. It is a unique experience. A human barista oversees the making of your coffee to be sure it is done right.

Yelp
The robot making coffee is something to see. Very fun. Check it out at least once. The inside is clean and nice. They do have human people working if you want food or a more elaborate drink.

Yelp
Such a great concept! Regardless of the barista being a bot, the customer service was exceptional from the people present. My husband had quite a list of questions and they were answered. The coffee tasted well made, if you like syrups it would workout for you. Our usual order, honey lattes & brown sugar, was not available there. Also! Most important part is they are only open from 9 AM - 5 PM M-F! Please don't make the same mistakes we've made. This spot is perfect for a study session or quiet time. (The seating area is in the back). They had plenty of seats! There is also a parking structure next door. Makes for easier time in downtown Sac.

Yelp
I loved the service here and the coffee was decent . It is really made by that robot . The only thing about it is that it isn't strong enough for me and it is pretty pricey. I got a regular latte with oat milk and it came out to $9. The location is perfect for meetings and conferences, and they even have a food special if you get coffee. I would come here but coffee wouldn't be a highlight for one of the reasons . The service, yes. The location, prime.

Yelp
The robot didn't make my coffee, a human did strike one. Yelp calls this an Internet cafe. It isn't. Strike two. No ice. Only hot drinks. They closed early that day. Didn't really matter but I found the plate pretty underwhelming. I really wanted a Claptrap kind of experience. The coffee is fine but if you're expecting any kind of entertaining experienced, you're going to be disappointed.

Yelp
We visited Botbar Cafe on February 28 during a two-night stay in Sacramento, California. We were looking for a hot breakfast, but ended up stopping in just for coffee--mainly for the experience of ordering from the robot! The service from the bot was impressive, but even more delightful was the friendly and helpful young lady at the counter. While the selection of fresh-baked goods was limited, my husband really enjoyed his coffee. All in all, it was a fun and unique experience that made the visit well worth it.

Yelp
Cute concept. You can order at a kiosk or with a person. Good sized menu but not overwhelming. They had some prepackaged food items too but we were just here for coffee. I got iced my husband got hot. Robot took awhile to make the coffees (slower than a person for sure) but it was fun to watch. I liked my coffee a lot. Hubby didn't enjoy his. He said it was really bitter. It's a cute gimmick but nothing worth gushing over.

Yelp
I recently visited Botbar Cafe and Im very conflicted. On one hand, I want to support local businesses. On the other, I don't want to contribute to the further obsolescence of humanity. While I appreciate that there was at least one human manager present, I found myself questioning the necessity of the robot barista completely. For a cafe that is designed around automation, it felt like the robot should be all that is needed to handle orders. Unfortunately, the bot failed to grab the cup on the first attempt and the manager manually had to input another order. It seems like with that inefficiency of having a manager it would be cheaper if the entire cafe were replaced by a vending machine. The cafe itself offers plenty of seating, making it a good place to work remotely or take meetings. Much better than Starbucks down the street. During my visit, the place was completely empty and there are at least 25 or so places to sit. Also for a machine run coffee bar, the operating hours are surprisingly restrictive. It would be great to see extended hours or weekends to accommodate more customers. Lastly, while I appreciate the cafe's efforts in embracing technology and providing a modern experience, the cafe definitely has some kinks to work out. With improvements in the robot's performance and better management of staffing and hours, Botbar Cafe has the potential to become a much better coffee spot than say Starbucks. Overall, I enjoyed my visit and would recommend Botbar Cafe to try out.

Yelp
Honestly it's a cute idea having a robot making your coffee but the robot didn't even make my coffee... so the girl that worked there told me since I wanted to switch out oat milk to regular milk then she was going to have to make my coffee since the robot can only make the coffee with oat milk which was totally fine and understandable. Still a little disappointed since I wanted to see the robot make my coffee since it is a bot bar coffee shop! But anyways I'm giving this place a 2 star because honestly the coffee that I ordered wasn't good at all. I felt bad because the girl that worked there was just the sweetest, but the coffee really wasn't great and nothing special about it. I got a cup for me and my mom and my mom disliked it so much she drank half and couldn't force herself to drink more so she threw it away.

Yelp
From the Order machine we got mocha and Cappuccino, i got lukewarm coffee it was cold day and the Bot has broken finger so can't hold the cup, the attendant hold the cups while on the phone with repair I think, he apologized. It will be better to inform us that bot has mechanical issue, so we not order it Why taking customer money? Why

Yelp
New coffee shop alert! I don't think I've ever been served a coffee by a robot but it was a fun experience. You walk in and order your drink on a giant iPad and then you wait while the robot does his magic. It's very cute because the robot will give you fun facts about the coffee while it's brewing. Just make sure to select iced or hot coffee first on the left side of the screen because I just saw latte pop up first thing in the middle of screen and I selected it not realizing I ordered a hot latte. They also have a beautiful lounge area if you'd like to sit with a view of the capitol. Visit them while they're still new because they are having a promotion on half off pastries if you buy a coffee!! I got my coconut pastry for just around $2. The drinks are a little pricey but it's what you would expect for a robot coffee shop in downtown. I paid around $8 for my coffee and pastry.

David C.

Yelp
How is a coffee shop that's ran by a robot always closed? Every time I come, they're closed. You would think with a robot you could run a coffee shop 24 hours a day.

Yelp
this place was amazing!!! the person who served me was so sweet and even offered my friend more because adam tried scamming her!! the service is amazing and the seating is so comfortable i am in loveeee!!! i will be back next time im in sac!! ps brian d. i got iced coffee and it was deeelish

Aashna K.

Yelp
great. had a good time and the worker was really nice! I had a nice mocha drink and the vibes were great. spent an hour here & it felt like nothing.

Travis W.

Yelp
I find the robot to be pretty cute. My wife ordered a drink where it said let me tell you a story about this drink then said nothing lol. I think the robot didn't have a pre programmed voice line for that drink. But it did give me the history of my iced americano which was pretty neat. This place also doesn't have a lot of cold drinks right now which doesn't make that much sense to me. I can get an iced americano but not an iced latte? Seems like it actually easier to do iced drink instead of hot ones but hey maybe I'm wrong. If you are interested in the idea interesting place.

Claire S.

Yelp
I ordered and paid for an order online and received a text confirming that my order would be ready at 12:40. I went to the shop and the open sign was on, but the doors were locked and no one answered. there's no phone number or email address to contact the store. so I just gave them money and they gave me nothing, with no means of recourse. if I could give botbar zero stars, I would. late stage capitalism is a nightmare.

Chloe L.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop!!!! It was so cute to see the bot making coffee! Def worth a visit!!!!

Mina A.

Yelp

Yelp
October 16, 2024 This will be review number Maestro or Maestra a few notes on the piano if you please, Number Seven, Number Chut, of this Botbar! First off, not the subject, tomorrow is Thirty Fifth year mark of World Series Earthquake! It started as Battle Of The Bay, then BART Series! Earthquake hit at five oh four p.m. of California time! Not the time zone, not that matters of time zone, as both teams are of California! Now is called Earthquake World Series! Okay, back to subject! I say Botbar very walkable of Hyatt Regency Sacramento, Residence Inn By Marriott, Sheraton! My hotel says or they not recommend for me! Think this may be why! Very walkable! I walk inside! One reviewer says only one "human" person working, something of the drink is made by robotic creature! That may be true as when I first walk in the place, I hearing male voice, "Hello! What brings you in today," I looking around, see this white and blue robot creature on the counter! Looking around, yes ah yes ah yes! They having the Char Siu bow (bao), although it is call something else! Finally see a person, ask of it! She asks what, I say three times how I seeing Char Siu bao on the menu! Finally, third time, I point, she says what word says on the menu! I say I will please like to buy, bring out the money! "Sorry, young lady, this is cashless, we cannot take cash here at all unless they have correct change!" Okay, so she cannot give change back! Even a couple sitting at nearby table with high seats! The gentleman, "You cannot sell to her, you cannot take five dollars from her?" I had a ten dollar bill! He sees my frustration, even the wife says for just five dollar with tax, how they would not use Crediting Card for just small amount five dollar with tax! Five dollars with tax, so my ten dollar bill as the couple say, should have been enough! Now I know why my hotel not recommended for me! Not sure if it is child friendly or not child friendly, hotel knows if is not child friendly, I will not be comfortable! I know for me they not recommended as it not takes cash unless the customer has correct change! One has been warned!

Salma S.

Yelp
It was super cutesy, not overpriced, and the worker and bot were super sweet!!! We got our drinks really quick, the bagel and cream cheese was so good, and the drinks had the perfect amount of ice

Paloma A.

Yelp
We have tried going five times within the last two month and they always closed when they're supposed to be open. Today was my last attempt to go.

Scott M.

Yelp
Love it. Coffee was excellent and quick. The Director of Operations was there working and was open to explain everything about the concept. He also had two interviews that did not show up that day. Beats paying $20 an hour to someone that either shows up an hour late or does not come in at all.

Michael B.

Yelp
I do not like Botbar Coffee. There is an egg shaped robot mixing pre-made components. By employing different switches, different drinks are made. The coffee tastes like instant, and there is an attendant on hand to wipe up spills, as the robot spills a lot. Nice selection of pastries, but high priced. I do not normally do negative reviews, but could not find much to like here.

Elena B.

Yelp
Reflecting on 2024, I was thinking about my year's most disappointing food experience, and Botbar was undeniably the worst food experience I had all year. I'm not trying to be dramatic, but this place is just a terrible business model as well so i don't mind tearing it down. I went in and ordered from the screens and my robot received my order. I walked over and the robot is covered in sticky coffee stains. The robot began making my coffee, measuring over the sides of the mixing cups - explaining the splash back. It started to tell me a very obviously ai generated explanation of what a latte was and what oat milk was then it cut off in the middle and was just silently jerking the coffee around before putting it down. It then made my boyfriend's coffee in complete silence. Both coffees were convenience store quality. If you're going to try to replace trained professionals with a robot, at least clean him up and teach him how to make a decent latte. That's all.
