Best Lunch Spots in Asheville, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Newly opened, this fast-casual space boasts a simple menu of Indian street food favorites (hello, matchstick okra fries) from James Beard 2022 Restaurant of the year, Chai Pani. The colorful and quirky dining room pairs effortlessly with the spice and savory notes of the restaurant’s bhel puri." - Lyndsay Cordell

Google
Excellent food! I got the okra fries and the chicken tikka masala wrap. The wrap was absolutely phenomenal and flavorful! Comes with a sauce that I used to dip both the fries and the wrap and it was soooo yummy! I squeezed a bit of lime over the okra fries and wow! I don’t know any other spot in town where you can get okra fries like that, but I am telling you….if you come to Botiwalla you MUST try the okra fries. Customer service was stellar!! Staff were very friendly and helpful with the menu! Love this spot! Will absolutely return again!

Visiting this place for the first time. We absolutely enjoyed the Paneer Bowl, Tikka Paneer Roll, Gobi 65, Vada Pav and the Chai (that comes along with Parle G). The rice bowl and the paneer wrap was so filling and very flavorful. The Vada Pav was exactly like it was made in Mumbai along with the tea which was a great. We overall enjoyed our experience and I would highly come back again for the Vada Pav for sure.

Have lived in Asheville for several years and finally got around to trying this gem. The food is very reasonably priced and excellent—one of the best “bangs for your buck” in Asheville. If you are wanting to try the flavors of Chai Pani but don’t want the wait, come here!! The menu is smaller but everything on it is delicious. Do not skip the okra “fries!” We will be coming back again for sure.

10k/10. Ordered 2 appetizers and 2 rolls everything was exceptionally good. The staff were great! Please open a store in the San Antonio TX area!!

Oh sweet lordamercy it was so good. Came here b/c a friend brought an order of the Gobi to our meetup the day before, so I came back. It was delicious, everyone on the staff was delightful, and now I'm wondering if I make it my restaurant outing both nights I'm here... ❤️

Ordered take out- food was ready very fast I ordered it online and by the time I got there it was ready (7 minutes). Had 2 type of chicken skewers & naan. Chicken was very tasty with just a hint of spice. Cilantro sauce was amazing. The naan was soft, fluffy and delicious!

Google
Wow, hats off to these guys; they just turned this place to a perfect downtown style eatery and the main chai pani to other big place as a full service restaurant. The Botiwala is serving great food just the way they were serving it with Chai Pani. Every single thing on their menu is an awesome creation of their great experience. Staff is as always so courteous and cool. Despite of weekend rush hours they never show their exhaustion to the guests. The owner this place must be a great person. Don’t miss the gobi 65 and Kathi rolls.

Yelp
The Desi Salad at Botiwalla Asheville deserves real respect. Calling it a salad undersells what is happening here. Crisp vegetables, warm spices, bright acidity, and just enough heat to keep things interesting. Every bite is intentional and balanced, fresh but bold, flavorful without being overwhelming. I ordered it thinking it would be a side. It was not. It was the thing I kept going back to between bites of everything else. It's not secret that Botiwalla is the shizz. and the Desi Salad alone is reason to return.

Yelp
The old Chai Pani space has been converted to a fast casual restaurant on the same label (Chai Pani has moved to a larger space and is still packed there). Here, I was able to order takeout and pick it up at a reasonable pace. You couldn't get drinks online, but a separate bar was in the shop, offering a spread of options. They also sell various spice mixes to go. The food I got was inimitably delicious. I was happy to deal with leftovers and thus got a salad with grilled paneer (the salad was the first thing I got from here back in the early COVID era), which comes with a sachet of crispy noddles and some spiced cashews and is both exciting to the tastebuds and very filling. Their ultra-thin fried okra comes with a lime garnish and its own hint of spice. A vada pav was delivered with ample chutneys and a spice rub and is always exciting. I continue to be a bit baffled at an Indian menu that offers basically no lentils or chickpeas; the vegan options here are not as good as Chai Pani or other Indian restaurants in general and I would be happier if I could get something bean based. The crowds here are less now that the menu is smaller, but it is convenient and it is still high quality food. Wisely, they have kept the tiger mural over the bar.

Yelp
Fried okra strips are great. Lamb rolls bowls, and salads are wonderful. Everything is very tasty. People are cool. Like Chai Pani, but lower prices and more casual. I have been here several times and it has been excellent every-time.

Yelp
If you're looking for a tasty easy food to enjoy on the go as you walk thru downtown Asheville or just sit outside their establishment and enjoy with a bestie this was a real treat for us. The flavors just merry so well, crunchy and tangy and so satisfying and quite addicting. I wish I'd eaten more.

Yelp
I was not expecting to find Indian food in downtown Asheville, which was our backup plan after we realized that another restaurant closed early for Easter. I am glad that we tried Botiwalla. I wouldn't call it authentic Indian food, but a reinterpretation of traditional recipes. The dosa filling was sandwiched between two toasted hamburger buns with a minty savory chutney. They went well together. The mango lassi was thick and creamy, but the cup was quite small. We ordered at the counter, but they brought food to the table when it was ready. We bussed our own trays afterward.

Yelp
The food was amazing and very different from the many Indian restaurants we have tried. Cool decorations and vibe. We sat outside and it was great watching people go ny while we enjoyed our food. Wish they had bigger cups of water so we didnt have to go back inside multiple times to refill our cups.

Yelp
SO good! I have been thinking about those okra tidbits for days now. Very fresh interesting flavors . Will be using it as my local takeout for sure. We ate inside and that is a fun experience as well. Lots of cool culture and art inside.

Yelp
I love Botiwalla! The food was fresh & delicious. The staff and atmosphere are amazing. Sitting outside in the balcony is a nice option when it's warm. A favorite

Yelp
We enjoyed our meal at Chai Pani and wanted to try their other concept. So glad we did. It's a little more casual - order at the counter, take a number, etc. But the food is still top notch. We ate: - Maharaja Lamb Burgers - Chicken Tikka Roll If you are considering those, go for it! Especially the lamb burgers. Explosion of flavors. Sweet, spicy, cool, savory. I'm inspired to make a copycat recipe.

Yelp
This is yet another amazing place to eat in Asheville. Indian street food is the scene here, & a delicious way to enjoy food from the subcontinent. We started with an order of Yada Pav. These are basically sliders of chickpea & potato fritters bathed in tasty chutneys. The dish looks so simple, but the flavors were off the chart. Then it was on to a Paneer wrap. The Indian cheese was grilled on skewers & had a great charred flavor. The wrap was a 10 out of 10, filled with shredded veggies.

Yelp
We have been to Botiwalla in the past when it was more like the OG Chai Pani menu. On this most recent visit on Labor Day we found it has become a Chipotle-like experience instead. I ordered a chicken/rice bowl and while the chicken was good quality, the rice was plain and had little flavor. My sauce had almost no flavor. The idea of Indian "fast food" is intriguing and I'm open to it but the food has to still have powerful flavor and this did not. With current menu we will not return.

Yelp
The SPDP is delicious with its fragrance, crunch and creamy, heat and cooling sensations, salty tart and sweet - yum! The chai was flavorful and authentic - not too sweet, which is the ultimate compliment. The service was quick and the manager and staff very friendly - yat for Kerbie and Joe! Fun vibes and decor. Would love to come back! -signed, a Chicagoan who lives near a ton of great restaurants

Yelp
The food was amazing. Recommend trying the puri and then ordering a roll. The chicken tikka and paneer tikka rolls were great!

Amy B.

Yelp
Friendly help navigating the menu -just how spicy is spicy?! Absolutely delicious food! Order at the counter but nice booths and tables for eat in.

Yelp
Our bowls all tasted really good and the prices are reasonable. Super quick takeout too.

Yelp
A great stop for a quick lunch! It's become my family's routine whenever we are in Asheville that a stop to Botiwalla on the way is mandatory. Always delicious, with friendly staff in a great location. This review was made in connection with a Toast promotion.
