Highlights

Bottle Riot offers an extensive and ever-changing list of hand-selected natural wines, deliciously obscure European beers, and spirits. The beverage menu celebrates family-owned wineries, winemakers, and brewers from around the globe, producing exceptional products with minimal intervention using sustainable, organic, and/or biodynamic growing practices. Paying tribute to the creative spirit of the space's previous tenant, the late sculptor John Payne, Bottle Riot continues to celebrate local artists with bimonthly openings and ongoing exhibits. Bottle Riot is located in Wedge Studios (lower level) at 37 Paynes Way in the heart of Asheville's eclectic River Arts District.

"Opened: February 2018 Stop in for a frequently shifting menu and a flow of more than 60 wines by the glass, more than 60 wines by the bottle and European beers to pair with cheese, charcuterie and spreads from hummus to pimento cheese. Also, expect an emphasis on wines that are sustainable and biodynamic in this River Arts District space featuring high ceilings, cozy couches and art on the walls. Try: The Listán rosé from the Canary Islands. A summer favorite recommended by the staff, it’s fruit-forward with a dry finish." - Katie Toussaint

Nice place to enjoy a drink. A great selection of wine. They have some unique beers too. They recently added cocktails to the mix. You’ll need to get your membership like all the other places in this state that serve alcohol do. Great service & comfortable vibe. Love the brick walls. Perfect spot to sit back relax and chat with a drink in hand. There are tables inside and out. I enjoy both depending on weather and mood.

Been living in Asheville for a year this was the first time that I found this place and it's a really great spot I just wish the service would have been better. I went in and wanted a nice glass of wine. I ordered the smoked trout. My glass sat empty for about 15 minutes until I was offered another glass. He had his back to me talking to other guys. I wanted to see how long it would take to be offered another until I asked. They were not busy he had his back turned to me the whole time. You feel like they're doing you a favor. But what a great spot and location and a great variety of wines and liquors and nice appetizers. I will go back.

***Update!! The wine list now includes many more affordable selections by the glass and bottle!! They’ve also added additional seating outside since my last visit. The server told us the menu changes weekly and it also has many more choices to pair with the vino!! Lovely space with high ceilings and great social distancing measures. They have a huge wine selection and the snacks they offer are charcuterie (cheese board/plates), bites of olives and stuffed grape leaves and seafood tins. The cheese board (see photo) we chose had three kinds of cheese from several options and was served with many lovely accompaniments including pickled cherry tomatoes that were unexpected and delicious! The service was friendly and attentive. I originally gave 4 stars because of the prices, but am upgrading to 5 with the new menu.

Bottle Riot is akin to a “coming home”. You feel welcomed. You leave full of a warm tummy and a fun time. Their wine and cocktail selection is phenomenal (seriously, top notch). But more than that, their service is outstanding. You walk in a stranger and leave as family. One of the few places in AVL that doesn’t care if you’re a local or a tourist - they treat you the same. They value you as a patron. Not to mention, the industrial vibe is fire.

SerpAPI
Love the vibe here, and their wine and drink selection is great! Howeverrrr it was pretty lame of them to refuse to make a charcuterie board at 915, just because they close at 10. Seemed a little ridiculous for what it takes to make one. I mean a place like this should be open later than 10p on a Saturday anyway really but 🤷‍♀️

SerpAPI
Over priced in my opinion, not a wide selections of snacks/food and they don’t offer any draft beer. Service quality is 50/50 depending on who you get but the woman with a sleeve wasn’t very friendly.

Very impressive selection of bottled Belgium Trappist ales and more. Great place to have a 3-hour conversation on your birthday.

Great atmosphere and ambiance to enjoy that favorite glass of wine. Servers are great and knowledgeable and a must when visiting Asheville.

Yelp
Bottle Riot, you won me over with your giga pours of wine. Seriously, you could have practically put a whole bottle of wine in one of these glasses! My friend and I sat at the bar on a quiet weekend. There were two bartenders so we were given more attention than I am used to, but in the best of ways. Everyone was very friendly and the recommendations were delightful. I loved the atmosphere - very cool and fun. The wine selection was very impressive, but what I liked best was no offense was taken when I stated I didn't care for a particular wine. The bartenders listened closely and then would provide another sample. I don't think I ever tried more than two samples before settling on a particular glass of wine. I had an utterly great time here!

Yelp
One of the best wine bars around! Friendly and knowledgeable staff, chill vibe, and great wine (and beer and cocktails) Sampled the Rose, Sav, Sparking Rose, and the Orange. They were all fantastic. I've actually never had an orange wine before and it was perfect. The small bites were a nice touch to go with the vino, as well. Definitely need to come check out Bottle Riot. Really cool place, great vibe, and a nice selection of drinks.

Yelp
I would give it 0 stars if I could. We were able to get anybody to wait on us at the bar so we just left. The waitress who was waiting on tables told us there was no table service and to order at the bar when we asked if we should just seat ourselves. We ended up leaving without service but at least we didn't spend any money.

Paul T.

Yelp
Great spot in the River Arts District. Great wine, knowledgeable & friendly staff, cool building.

Christopher C.

Yelp
The service and ambience are awesome. Very knowledgeable and friendly when it comes to their wine list. I highly recommend the smoked trout dish! Make sure to walk throughout the space and see all of the cool artwork.

Allison M.

Yelp
I know this place is pricey but it's in a great spot with great servers and atmosphere. My experience here was five star for sure. Upon entering we were greeted warmly. They had tables with fire outside but it was a bit too cold so we opted for indoors They have a new system that collects phone numbers and vax statuses (yay!). Their wine list is robust and diverse. They also have beer and cocktails for the non wine drinkers. With the help of a kind served we chose a Tempranillo and it was delish. The space is dimly lit in a very aesthetically pleasing way. It's clean and spacious but also cozy. Plenty of parking. Definitely recommend

Sandy B.

Yelp
Worst bartender in a decade. I did nothing to deserve the rude treatment and eye rolling. I will never return. Take it out on someone else stupid enough to walk in and expect a pleasant experience.

Stephanie J.

Yelp
Bottle Riot was a fun spot to grab drinks at. My husband and I sat at the bar but there is seating available both inside and out. If you are a new member there is a $1 fee to join. We grabbed a few glasses of wine, they were all good and the service was friendly. If you are in the RAD, check this place out.

Sabrina H.

Yelp
This place is sexy. It has the largest disco ball I've ever seen. I went here on a date, and while the date was a dud, this place brought the charm. We ordered a bottle of wine and some snacks, both were yummy and the service was really great. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and all of the offerings and guided us in the right direction I love that they have a turn-table set up here and lots of music events. I'm excited to come back and dance. Parking is easy.

Yelp
Fabulous wine selection and a vibe that you will want to allow time to lounge in! Located in a super cool area of Asheville in the River Arts District. Highly recommend! I did not feel like I had to meet a standard to feel comfortable as another review mentioned. I had just landed from all-day travel and was definitely not at the top of my game my friend and I went right from the airport to get a great glass of wine and start the visit out with some down time to catch up with each other. Two moms in our 50s dressed very casually and we felt very welcomed, the bartender was incredibly helpful with tastings and wine selections. So glad we checked it out! A great introduction to Asheville!

Donald R.

Yelp
My wife and her friend had a five-star experience at this place about three years ago, so I was excited to return with her on this visit to Asheville. It's a wine bar with a great selection, and that's all we were there for. The two ladies running the place provided exceptional service and hospitality. They were knowledgable about their product and kept the bar running smoothly. It's a welcoming and relaxing place to just sit and have a glass of wine by yourself, with your spouse, or with a small group (all three categories were in attendance). I highly recommend it if your near the River Arts District of Asheville, NC.

Dwight G.

Yelp
Beautifully redone space. Nice setting. Nice wine selection. Clearly not a place to go "grab a beer." You'd be looked upon better with a glass of wine in your hand. Be sure to be on your elitist "A game." I've been to snazzy places from Paris to Palm Springs and never felt more unwelcome. Unless you resemble the elite in "The Hunger Games," the clientele are way more sophisticated than you, and you will likely feel it. Works well for that crowd though. If you fit this mold, head on over, you'll be welcomed with open arms. If not, head to a local brew pub.

Yelp
While day tripping we came across this little gem. Felt cozy and the staff was very friendly. Our waiter was chatty so we got some suggestions before ordering. We ended up getting a Belgium blonde and a Pale Ale. The new trend is scanning the menu from their printed card that has a QR code to their online menu. So so so love this!!!! As we sat, more patrons arrived and we noticed that this is a popular locals place. Would recommend for a beer or glass of wine. Do not order their cheese and crackers though. It's a pre packaged plastic snack that you can buy at a supermarket. Otherwise everything else was great!

Terrilynn D.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and excellent choice and variety of wines. The options to seating can fit most any mood. Great spot for conversation (until the music gets a bit loud later on). The Pranom kitchen in the corner offers two choices to go with the wine, if you wish. $11 per bowl. The flights of 3 wines are $15. Individual glasses more. It is easy to spend more than you expect .. but so delicious. The staff is friendly. (my only pull-back on rating is the volume of the music when trying to have a conversation -- I wish there were a half-star option)

Nick R.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, good vibes, and ambience. Unique set up for a wine bar. Bartender recommended a really good italian primitivo ! Service was good. Great patio, too.

Marvin M.

Yelp
Every time I'm in Asheville I swing by. It's such a vibe and not pretentious like some wine spots can be. Great wine selection, and they have simple snacks to enjoy.

Kelly L.

Yelp
Such a fun area! We stopped by and we were impressed by the area and this spot! We came in and just asked to have the two flights (red and white) picked out for us - such a great idea because we loved all of them! As soon as you walk in it smells amazing and is such an easy going atmosphere! Loved this spot, would definitely recommended stopping by!!

Yelp
Olive appetizer was just a bowl of kalamatas.. I would only put those in a salad they r not good on their own. Never seen an olive plate like that.. and I've eaten a lot of olive plates. Just too cheap when the prices for the customers are not. Gross.

Steve S.

Yelp
This place is called Bottle Riot now. I have absolutely no idea how the ratings are so high. The one thing I enjoyed about my visit here was the barstool I sat in. They are incredibly comfortable and look very cool. Other than that, the atmosphere is OK - lots of Beckys and Karens talking way too loudly and cackling. As far as the wine...incredibly overpriced and not good at all. $14 for a mediocre glass of red wine is ridiculous. One look at the food menu and I knew I would not be dining here. Nothing sounded particularly good, and the prices were insane. I highly recommend another place like Blackbird for better food, better wine, better ambiance, and lower prices.

Benjamin R.

Yelp
I was very impressed by both waiters' knowledge of the wine menu and their ability to recommend wines based off my requests and explanations of what I liked. I'd be happy if this type of place were close to where I lived. For the quality of wine, the prices made a lot of sense.

Gabrielle D.

Yelp
Nice wine bar with funky art and random comfy chairs and sofas. The wine by the glass selection is huge and you can purchase bottles to take away for half price. I got 2 glasses and 2 bottles to go. The beer selection is limited to Belgian style brews in bottles. It was very busy when I visited as the travel Channel was filming. It was impossible to order at the bar since the bar was filled with patrons, however we sat at a table and eventually got table service. The staff was friendly, however the atmosphere was a little overwhelming given the circumstances.

Gillian G.

Yelp
I sat down with my husband jimmy John and we ordered the best sandwich's. The taste was immaculate and the chef was swell. This is one of the best places in Asheville to get a sandwich! Very much recommend for a nice day out.

Maor R.

Yelp
Good amount of wine options and a very cozy and beautiful atmosphere. Prices were a bit high for some wine options I'd say but more than reasonable for others, especially with. daily featured red for only $7! Would also love if there were some good food pairings to go with the wine as we all know that a few glasses will make you hungry! That said, the place is so inviting, comfy, great ambiance and the staff was so nice and welcoming I definitely want to go back soon!

Amanda S.

Yelp
Went for NYE. Was great music in the beginning, perfect actually. Then around 11 a new DJ came and was so lame and no one wanted to dance, was not a common mix. Was very disappointed, wanted to stay until the new year but the music choices later in the evening was just bad, disappointed:

Kent N.

Yelp
Meandered my way over and was drawn in by the lively music playing. I needed just a soulful rest at the bar and it turned out I was not alone. Some people's worlds shook them to their soles and others danced. Stacy was an excellent bartender and Wells as well with some generous pours but only as required. There's a few photos or videos attached see if you can see it all. Mostly a wine bar but some killer Belgian style brews too and there wasn't food on the night I was there inside but there are food options around and Stacy said you can bring them in no problem. Felt like being a well known old friend at Cheers despite not knowing anything about it at all and just happens to be dance stancing my way through

Corey P.

Yelp
We were very excited to try this place but ended up having a very poor experience. When we entered, we were told to sit anywhere. Shortly after that, the bartender told us they were at capacity (which is understanding during rona). However, the manner in which we were told to leave was very unpleasant. The bartender shooed us with his hands to get out. I then asked him where do we wait or if we put our name in. He simply responded that we can wait in the parking lot. I don't think there was any Ill intent here, however it was quite rude and off-putting. It seems like there needs to be some training and a waiting system out in place. I would not recommend visiting based off our experience.

Tori P.

Yelp
We went on a Tuesday for a friends birthday and the customer service was TERRIBLE. Staff was rude and yelled at my pregnant friend for standing up to pull her pants up, telling her she would be kicked out of she stood up without her mask for a moment. There was people smoking and also standing without masks but for some reason we were targeted. We asked for water and we're given the could shoulder by the staff and had to ask somebody else and finally got some. I don't recommend going here during COVID if you're looking for a fun time out. THIS SUCKED.

Alli R.

Yelp
One of the biggest wine selections I've ever seen! Do yourself a favor and get a flight, because the choices are just too overwhelming. And ask the staff for suggestions, they really know their stuff! I was pleasantly surprised at the food options available as well, the spinach artichoke dip is sooo cheesy and delicious, you must try it! The vibe of this place is so industrial but also cozy with the various seating options. I'll definitely be back here!

Todd R.

Yelp
This place was tasty lots of good Belgian ales really good pasta I mean all the dishes were super super good I could just sit there and eat all night.

William N.

Yelp
Excellent atmosphere, Tuesday&Wednesday DJ excellent, excellent drinks (wines, mixed drinks). Barkeep Jonathan is the best. Check it out.

Heidi S.

Yelp
I've loved this spot since I moved to Asheville. I'd go to the Wedge to watch the sun set and hold a beer but not drink it (I don't like beer) and now--yay! A wine lover's bar in my favorite place! The selections of wines are extensive, the cheese and charcuterie plates are well thought out and plentiful, the furniture is comfortable, the servers know their wines and are friendly, it's a dreamy, wonderful place. Go there! You won't be sorry!

M B.

Yelp
The review is regarding a mistake on their digital menu. In short, we ordered a $13 bottle of wine off their bottle menu, but were charged $42. Turns out the online menu is incorrect. Even though the server acknowledged the error, all he could do (or would do) was shrug and say the owners made a mistake.

Jan P.

Yelp
I still love this place but don't enjoy the changes . . . meaning the prices. Red wines -- $63 to $486 per bottle. What am I missing? It's a wine joint in the Wedge parking lot. And the music?! I'm a professional musician and one bar repeated over and over for five minutes made me run from the building. I mentioned it to the clueless bartender and several other patrons thanked me for saying something. I would have bought an $80-something bottle of wine for me and my friend but we left and got beer. Where are the moderate wines? Enjoying a bottle of wine in a parking lot, I should be paying about $17. Sitting in an upscale steakhouse I'm willing to pay a couple hundred for a really good bottle. Good luck guys and gals.

Virginia S.

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere and great wine! The staff is very helpful in making a selection! Great variety of by the glass and bottles. Very relaxed setting with sofas and an outdoor patio!

Lori W.

Yelp
We visited the District Wine Bar last Friday, May 14th @ approximately 6:30 pm. The cozy atmosphere and comfy couches appeared enticing. We were not, however, enticed by the volume of the "nightclub" type music. I'm a local to Asheville. We were there to meet friends for wine and conversation, however the "conversation" was t possible with the volume. We asked the bartender to please turn the music down to a reasonable level which he gladly did. When I returned to my seat on the couch, everyone around me thanked me for speaking up. This isn't a setting, at least not at 6:30, for blaring music. I'm willing to pay the high price for their minimal pours if I can sit with friends and enjoy their company, but I would seriously co spider going back because of the music. There is too much competition in Asheville to lose folks like us who have money to spend.

Tom W.

Yelp
This is the cats meow of cool places. Really well thought out wines and beer and an incredible staff making sure that life is good for you at that moment.

Martha H.

Yelp
The wine list is fantastic, but the servers are so knowledgeable I usually let them guide my choices. Great space with cool decor. They are limiting their capacity which made me feels safely distanced from other patrons. I love this place!

Jay M.

Yelp
This is a gem In Asheville! Such an amazing wine selection and atmosphere. Perfect for a date night, or to share a bottle (or 2) with friends or family! Highly recommended

Mistery M.

Yelp
Wine selection is pretty cool. Pricy- this Asheville, not San Jose. Come on! The decor is chaotic and confused. Hire an interior decorator not your brother in law!

Kate E.

Yelp
I really love bottle riot, most of the bartenders are really great. Charlie especially, however tonight I had the displeasure of being served by James. He treated us like we were wasting his time and he wanted nothing but to do with us. He was short and abrupt any time he was at the table. For example "do you know what you want" was what we were greeted with. It's a shame, we enjoyed everything else so much, but felt that we were treated like second class because we were "younger" than his normal clientele.

Barbara N.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, comfy sofas, chairs plus a community table for large groups. Must mention a gorgeous long bar with plenty of seating. The wine bar is located in the River Arts District. Enjoy outside seating with firepit in good weather. But don't let the weather stop you from visiting. This is a unique space to enjoy a glass of wine inside while chatting with your friends or coming solo to relax while browsing the internet or reading a book. You will enjoy the great selection of wines and the service is VERY good. The owners and bartenders are quite knowledgeable and can help you if you don't know much about wine. This is a definite spot to check out if you are visiting or live nearby. I definitely plan to visit again on my next visit in Asheville.

Leslie W.

Yelp
Comfy and cozy, rustic and eclectic, this is by far the best place to relax and enjoy amazing wine and time with friends! Just walk through the door and the owners instantly make you feel like family. By far the most delicious by-the-glass selection in town. And the bottle selection...just so yummy!

Charlene P.

Yelp
We absolutely love the District! The wine selection is amazing and their pimento cheese is my favorite in town. Tom and I always enjoy a night out at our favorite wine spot!

Herb A.

Yelp
District Wine Bar is my favorite Asheville, NC libation location. First of all the wine selection is amazing featuring the best Pino Grigio that have tasted in quite some time. Laurie Nichols, owner & host extraordinaire, goes out of her way to make everyone feel welcome. Check out their Facebook page, since there is often great entertainment and unique themed events that you will all want to be a part of. The décor, from the comfort of the "Friends" living room set, or the rustic modern bar area to the outside patio, there is that special comfort zone for everyone. And what a great, fun crowd of people. I would recommend you make this your new favorite, just as I have.

Brandi P.

Yelp
So so nice! Great organic and biodynamic wine options, and knowledgeable, helpful staff. Perfect for date night or a night out with girls!

Gary K.

Yelp
Lovely atmosphere and super friendly vibe. Had some sparkling wine after a long drive down from Maryland and enjoyed relaxing in the Adirondack chairs looking out over the parking area and highway -- which sounds off putting but actually fit thugs perfectly!

Cat T.

Yelp
We had a few minutes before our reservation next door so we stopped in for a beer. We were the only people inside with one man behind the bar. We were directed to the online menu. We had trouble finding the drink menu so decided to simply ask him for two beers. He was annoyed and said that they offer 30 varieties. We said ok how about a Hefeweizen....he charged us $18! He took advantage of us, was stubborn and we will never go back.

Roberta R.

Yelp
This is an incredibly relaxing place with fantastic wines and very high end and exclusive beers. The servers are so knowledgeable but there is no pretense. Super nice guys who will share great insights. You must come here if you want great service, a very zen environment, super music and excellent libations and Spanish snack tins, do come here!! See you!

Eileen W.

Yelp
While wandering around the arts district we discovered this place. The service, atmosphere and the wine were all wonderful. We will definitely go back soon and highly recommend District wine bar to anyone who likes great wine and a cool place to enjoy it.
