Bouillon Julien - Gastro Obscura

"Bouillon Julien, with its unique “Celadon green” hue, stained glass, painted panels, mirrored ceiling and mahogany bar, practically drips with Art Nouveau loucheness, yet its menu boasts items that start below 5 euros. This paradox can be traced back to its founder, Edouard Fournier, who upon opening the restaurant in 1906 famously declared, “Here, everything is beautiful, tasty, and of great value.” Fournier’s words would become something of a manifesto for Julien and other so-called bouillons that emerged in Paris in the late 19th century. And more than a century later, his creation is one of only a handful of venues that has retained this legacy of good-value, tasty dining in decadent surroundings. The menu at Bouillon Julien is unabashedly French, and revolves around classics such as oeuf mayonnaise (hard-boiled eggs with mayonnaise) and escargot swimming in garlicky butter, but also features dishes with subtle, contemporary flourishes, such as the signature bouillon, or broth, which is given a boost via coriander and lemongrass. Know Before You Go This is one of the relatively few traditional bouillons that takes reservations." - benfitch33, Austin Bush

We enjoyed everything about our experience dining here! The room is exquisite. Varied, inexpensive menu. Friendly service. Delicious food. Perfect place to spend a few hours. My duck breast and roast potatoes were delicious (€13). The chicken and chips wonderful (€12), and the chocolate mousse was dense, rich, silky and moreish. Definitely worth a visit or 2.

Google
This popular and gorgeous restaurant is, thankfully, quite affordable. For Paris, the prices are low, and the food tastes good for what you pay. The service was decent, though I have to note that the waitress didn’t bring my change correctly. Reservations are important if you want to spend a few hours dining in this classical baroque-style palace.

I celebrated my birthday at Julien and it was absolutely memorable! The atmosphere is warm, elegant and inviting, creating the perfect setting for a special occasion. The staff were attentive and friendly, and the food was full of flavor. Experience felt personal and joyful. A truly wonderful place to celebrate life’s special moments!

Google
a place decorated in authentic art nouveau style, with many original pieces including furniture and lighting fixtures. with a large, gorgeous stained glass window, with decorations and paintings. it's wonderful! it's worth going to see the space just for that. we also had a coffee and ate dessert which was exceptional! I recommend

Google
First of all, the design of the restaurant is a great representation of the art nouveau movement, featuring Muchas’ paintings and style. We were welcomed immediately, didn’t have to wait to be seated but it was around 20:00 ish. The food is great, and super decently priced for how the establishment looks and feels. Very classic french cuisine. A lot of french people recommended going to a bouillon and specifically bouillon julien for the design. The staff is also very nice and friendly, just know that they are tired and probably super overworked due to the volume of guests.

Google
An exquisite experience from start to finish. Bouillon Julien is not just a restaurant—it’s a living museum of Art Deco elegance and Belle Époque charm: stained glass panels, ornate floral mosaics, gilded mirrors, and a curved mahogany bar that looks like it was made for Toulouse-Lautrec to lean against. Even the light fixtures bloom like glass lilies overhead. The food was equally memorable: crusty bread followed by a perfectly seasoned ratatouille—simple, soulful, and beautifully plated. The baba au rhum desert was decadent and generous, soaked in just the right amount of rum made us feel delightfully French. Our waitress was attentive and spoke excellent English. Culinary, visual, and atmospheric - we left feeling both nourished and enchanted.

Google
Beautiful atmosphere with stunning Art Nouveau décor and intricate stained-glass ceilings (see photo). Service was slow to start, even though the restaurant wasn’t busy, but once we ordered, the food arrived quickly. The food was very good and reasonably priced.

Google
Beautiful restaurant. The food was good. I had rabbit terrine, steak and chips, chocolate mouse (which was to die for!) wine and coffee and it only came to 28€. The waiter was friendly and kind, and just attentive enough without hassling you. I booked on the website but there were walk-ins too. I would definitely recommend!

Yelp
The awestriking Art Nouveau interior pulled us into this restaurant, but it makes my very short list of Paris must-dos for the overall experience. I have no idea if anything has truly been updated since it opened in 1906, but kudos go out to a century of caretakers, because the decor is enough of a reason on its own to eat here. Reservations are encouraged - and we are Americans - so we booked for the early end of the dinner hour, which turned out to be a great blessing so that we could more easily walk around and enjoy up close the wall decorations. But even if you choose to eat at a more standard hour, it will be hard not to sit and just gawk at the ceilings and molding up above. I imagine that the menu has evolved a little more since 1906, but it's still classic French fare. Michael ordered the pumpkin soup and beef bouillon, and I had a lovely cauliflower gratin dish. I supplemented with rillettes, which were a treat, and which made our dessert of chocolate creme especially gratuitous. Service was friendly and efficient. And I still can't get over how affordable it is. Our only restraint here was the size of our stomachs, and despite their motto - "Ici, tout est beau, bon, pas cher" - I still had sticker shock. I'd easily pay twice the price and still be delighted.

Yelp
If you're looking for an authentic French dining experience, check out this place! Our waiter only spoke French but was friendly and patient with us. The place itself was big and well-decorated, though they had tables squished close together to fit as many people as possible. I was also blown away by the prices--it's so affordable especially coming from the States. The food was delicious, honestly one of my favorite places in Paris during my short trip there. I ordered the chicken, and it was cooked so well and felt so tender. Highly recommend, but make sure to make a reservation beforehand.

Yelp
This restaurant serves classic french food, so I got what they are most known for. Le Bouillon Julien is a beef broth flavored with coriander and lemongrass, fregola pasta, and beef macer. This soup was pretty light but reaaaallllly salty. It was great dipping the fresh bread in it though. That bread was sick. Like absolutely stupid. It was so good. It's so good that writing about it is making me sad honestly. I miss it. Ugh. -moving on- The julien dessert was so cute. It was a little muffin-like bread pudding-ish thing with rum, grapes, and chocolate sauce. It was the perfect little sweet ending to my meal.

Yelp
We were lucky to arrive at Bouillon Julien before the crowd formed on the sidewalk and got a table right away. The place is gorgeous to look at with impressive decorations and architecture. Being at Bouillon Julien I felt obligated to try the Bouillon Julien which is a beef broth with meat and veggies. It was rather tasty . The prices and drink selection was impressive as well, hard to believe a glass of wine would go for 3 Euro in a famous well located beautiful place like this. There were not a lot of vegetarian options , and one of my companions had a hard time finding something, but for us meat eaters it was great to sample traditional French food at a fair price.

Yelp
I'm honestly surprised by the low ratings because I had a great time and excellent food while here. First of all, the restaurant is beautiful. It's in the middle of a bustling street and there's often a long line outside - but once you walk in, it feels peaceful and relaxing to sit and experience the food. The waiters were all extremely nice and attentive - they were constantly checking up on me and had a dessert menu in front of me before I even needed to ask. The food was also excellent and incredibly affordable: it often shows up on lists for the best bang for your buck food options in Paris and the food quality is excellent. The portions are appropriately sized - and with it being so affordable, you get to dry various different types of dishes. The lychee blancmange desserts is one of the best desserts I've ever had - I still think about it and would be happy to go here again just for that. I had a great time and would recommend this to anyone visiting Paris.

Yelp
TOP FLIGHT CLASSIC FRENCH DISHES AT GIVEAWAY PRICES. In a Belle Epoque Nineteenth Century room, no less. Just go. * * * There are a lot of tourist restaurants throughout Paris That are designed to serve unsuspecting foreigners overpriced mediocre industrialized French food. Strangely, as far as I know, none of them call themselves "Bouillon". The tourists they want to trap don't know what a Bouillon is - And that is a good thing. A Bouillon is a historic restaurant that was designed to serve good food to working class people. In those days, artists and paint were cheap ... So it was not expensive to decorate the room. French gourmet cuisine often involved inexpensive ingredients such as kidneys and sweetbreads. (There was plenty of regular meat, chicken and fish as well.) White sauces don't cost much. So it was possible to put out an absolutely grand classic French meal at a price any worker could afford. Since then, the historic bouillons have bifurcated. Some have evolved into quite expensive temples of traditional French cuisine. Some have maintained their original popular pricing. The paint jobs are a little more faded in the cheap places. The food in all of them continues to be remarkable. You can pretty much go to any of them in confidence. * * * Food savvy tourists know about the bouillons. That includes a lot of French tourists visiting Paris. A lot of Parisians eat there too. That means there are massive massive lines to get into these places. Samuel C's recommendation for people who want to eat in bouillons. RESERVE. Waiting in line is boring and stupid. Reservations are honored - so you can waltz right in and sit down at your table. Another option is to eat off hours. We have done very well showing up at places at 4 pm when no one in their right mind would be eating dinner. French food tastes just as good at 4 as it does at 8. * * * Bouillon Julien is one of the cheap and worn down but still marvelous bouillons. If dinner is your treat, you want to be seriously considering this as an option. Our table had many dishes and they were universally wonderful. I will briefly mention three dishes of note. a) They do a pea soup that is the most pea-y soups you have had in your life. Not split peas. Real peas like peas in pods. If you ever thought peas were tasteless and boring, This soup will show you the wonders of what peas can be. b) Calves head with gribiche sauce. Everyone goes nuts over pork belly. Calves head can totally give pork belly a run for its money. Both pork belly and calves head are about decadent amounts of super tasty fat - combined with totally super tasty meat. You can't go wrong either way. Sauce Gribiche is something you read about in the sauce chapter of your old school cookbook. No one ever makes it. Sauce Gribiche is simply, totally divine. It is a super creamy cream sauce - flavored with capers, mustard and fresh parsley. Cream sauce because French white sauce is just amazing. Capers, mustard and fresh parsley cut the fat on the calves head and gives it tartness and interest. The white sauce makes things rich; the capers makes things astringent; the calves head makes things good. I was happy happy happy happy happy. 3) This was a dish I did NOT order. But about half of the diners in the dining room were eating this. When half of the customers in a restaurant all order the same thing ... There is a reason for that. They don't all order that because the dish is no good. The dish with the vote of the people was Julien Bouillon. (Yes, the reverse order of the name of the restaurant.) It is a beef broth, flavored with lemon and beef marrow and served with homemade pasta. People don't usually order bowls of beef broth in the other restaurants I go to. This makes me strongly suspect that the Julien Bouillon must be something really special. * * * Would I go back to the Bouillon Julien the next time I go to Paris? Absolutely positively! But Paris does have several bouillons. You can find good lists of these on the internet. Eating down the Bouillon list could easily be worth it. And the biggest smash hit of my most recent trip to Paris was food from Reunion and Mauritius. This is French-African-Indian fusion food - and it is to die for. You can find those restaurants in the XIVe. * * * There is a huge amount of amazing good eating to be done in Paris. Buy your ticket and get here immediately!

Yelp
This place was awesome. Seriously. I ate incredibly well, had wine with lunch and the price did not kill me. The waiter was kind, patient, helpful and fast. If you're an American visiting Paris and want 'real' French food that won't break the bank, this place will deliver.

Yelp
Busy spot for classic French dishes! We came at 6:30pm for dinner with a reservation. We were quickly seated and started with ordering escargot to share. Then for entrees we got the steak frites as well as the fish in cream sauce. Both were pretty good but I the steak (like many in places in Paris) was a bit tough and generally the steak is not a great cut compared to what you would get in the US. We loved the escargot (perfect to be eaten alone or on bread) and the choux was a great way to end the meal! Bouillon Julien definitely gets busy for dinner so I'd recommend making a reservation before coming.

Yelp
Hello and thanks for reading about my journey in Paris, feel free to leave a thumbs up or comment. The first impression is the art the location. Located in a bustling part of the city, full of restaurants and bars the experience is very enjoyable. Then you walk into Bouillon Julien, a classic French comfort food spot, authentic and affordable. An establishment catering both to locals and tourists. When you walk in, the first thing you notice is the unreal decor. It is like walking into an 18th-century French castle's dining room, absolutely stunning and adds to the whole dining experience. Got here at around 9:30 pm, and had a quick 30-minute queue. It was unreal, as an American, seeing how cheap everything was. Such a low price for wine, appetizers, etc, it was unbelievable. Salad - I got two, and they were both delicious. Mushroom cream soup - One of my favorite dishes of the night, everything you could want from a soup, full of umami and creamy. Bouillon Julien - Their signature dish, a beef soup unlike anything you have ever tried. I would recommend trying it for the experience Then my favorite plate of the night, the raisin chocolate pudding. So unexpected and it was unreal, still to this day I dream of it Overall loved my experiences at the place, have heard of better Bouillions though, so I would look into that. Super affordable and classic French food, would recommend it!

Yelp
Hello and thanks for reading about my paris journey. Give me some votes if you find this review helpful. . First thing first, bouillion I find that word in paris to be comfort french food which is usually affordable. It's authentic, and usually good, but nothing fancy, but locals loves it and tourists too. This is my experience, I might be wrong about the word boullion. . Ok this location is iconic and soo cool! It's a vibe and a must visit. Inside just makes you awe and make yourself think am I I'm a dream or is it real? Yes I slapped myself and it was real. I was very blessed to come here around 2pm on a weekday. Luckily there was no wait and scored a table real quick. . Boy believe me them prices was super low for appetizer, main dish, dessert, drinks such as wine. I ordered the 6 course meal including 2 wines for like only 40 euros and in usd 40 bucks. You really get the bang for your bucks. . Salad - lettuce, cheese was amazing, and some tomatoes with light vinaigrette. The sauce is more on the tangy side for sure. It was refreshing and I needed my veggies. . Rabbit tare tare - this was different. It was authentic. It was an experience and a vibe. Not something I would order again. I like to think it was cooked. . Snails - can't go wrong with this anywhere in paris. You will love it. It was a little more on the bland side for the pesto. When I think of pesto, I'm thinking of a punch on flavors and herby with garlicky. . Cheese - it was the hard cheese. It was calm and went well with the white wine. . Cows head with white mayo sauce - texture was amazing. I'm not a big mayo fan, I do like mayo but not overload. I had to brush some of the mayo sauce on the aide while eating it. . Red and white wine for different pairings - can't go wrong with any wine. It was so cheap I could easily have 4 glasses but everything in moderation I told myself. . Overall I really loved the building and the decor inside. I wouldn't have thought there's a place like this until I witness it. Highly recommend for local affordable French food. Thanks for reading and have a yelptastic day!

Yelp
This is one of, if not the best bouillon in town. But unlike some others this place is committed to keeping prices low while keeping quality high. The staff here was great and spoke wonderful English. To begin we drank Aperol Spritz and I ordered a big beer. The drinks are very tasty. I finally had my opportunity to eat escargot, so I took it. Honestly, it was delicious! These little snails come in a delicious butter sauce with garlic. Definitely worth a try. For our main dishes we preferred a beer stroganoff on mashed potatoes. My wife loved it and the potatoes. I ordered the bouillon julien which is unlike me since it was soup. I don't regret it though. Great tasty beef pieces with wonderful lemongrass. We ended up getting a sausage with mashed potatoes for our baby. She loved it and we helped eat the rest. The table bread was tasty but nothing special. For dessert, we had the creme brûlée and the meringue with cream. Both were tasty but the crème brûlée was the best. The ambiance here is great. Bathrooms were clean. Service was great! Prices are friendly. I would come back in a heartbeat.

Yelp
Good food, decent price. Amazing interior with stained glass ceilings and painted walls lending sense of time and history

Urs B.

Yelp
Came here on a local recommendation. It is a real French dining hall, no resos, a lineup every night. The interior is absolutely cool. The service was excellent The classic French dishes were really good, not superb but just really good value. It's not high end, but fast authentic French diner food. Two apps. Escargot, baked leeks, duck confit, steak frites, two espressos, two heavy shits of Calvados. 62Euros For Canadian standards, that's a deal. Solid 3.5 stars

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant with delicious food. The escargot was amazing. Great prices and great service. My steak was a little tough and the potatoes were a little cold but the flavor was spot on. The house Sauvignon blanc was so good and refreshing. Worth a trip just to sit and enjoy the ambiance and have a glass of wine. Truly stunning restaurant.

Gerard B.

Yelp
Our last dinner in Paris on our trip to see the new Notre Dame and my wife's birthday. The interior is a time capsule of the peak of the art nouveau movement. Absolutely gorgeous ! We had 6:30 (18;30) reservations and it was fairly empty. Within an hour it was almost full. The food was good, some entrees not what was expected. the Baked haddock and potatoes, (Brandade de Haddock) was not a piece of Haddock with potatoes but was ground up Haddock mixed in with mashed potatoes, but my wife loved it. The steak was ok, perfectly cooked but a little stringy. The appetizers were good, the Rillettes de Thon and Pâté de Campagne à l'Ancienne (with cornichons, which were so incredibly small I almost didn't see them. Now for the downside. The service, at least for us was very poor. Our waiter seemed to attend to the other diners at our expense. But that was a small price to pay for the overall experience and the very reasonable and affordable bill. Two appetizers, two main courses, dessert, two whiskies, and a carafe of red wine for under 60 euros.

Yelp
While the atmosphere beckons the eyes. From the peacocks on the walls, to the mirrors and coat hanger lamps, the food begs for more attention. Amateur bland cooking and my disappointment met here, this evening. I ordered a steak and mashed potatoes and a Merlot. I didn't receive the Merlot. I won't be returning here.

Yelp

Yelp
We were referred to Bouillon Julien as a must go during our trip and we luckily had a free night to check it out. Julien is a historic bistro with a beautiful interior that gets fairly lively at peak hours. If you're looking for a quiet romantic night, this may not cut it. This place filled up around 8pm and most tables were there for dinner and a party it seemed. Tons of fun. I've attached pics of the menu. Everything was excellent amongst the 4 of us and the prices really blew me away. After two weeks of €20-€40+ plates it's hard to believe everything was this good for that low of a price! If you're in Paris and seeking bang for your buck, make sure and make it over for one night at Julien.

Yelp
Bouillon Julien is a new "old" concept in Paris, harkening back to the days when there were hundreds of bouillons in Paris. Now there are a handful. Bouillons were places for the working class to get traditional French cuisine at working class price points. Definitely on-trend again, as most of the bouillons are packed with waiting lines out the doors. Five stars for the amazing Art Nouveau dining room with perhaps the most beautiful stained glass restaurant ceiling in Paris. It was painstakingly restored to its original splendor including the sea green walls. Four stars for the service which was friendly in spite of being overworked. Our waitress had to cover a lot of tables. Luckily for us the waiter station was next to us and we freely helped ourselves to bottles of water. 3.5 stars for the food. Maybe I was expecting too much. Portions are small, and not much stood out to me, but the food tasted decent. I had better escargot at another bouillon; however I liked the Gaspacho Andalou which was refreshing and I basically licked the bowl. The Les Plats Dorade fish was just ok, and the Le Julien Bouillon (boeuf bouillon) was nothing special and a bit bland to me. The one item that did stand out was the Choux Chantilly (cream puff with whipped cream) dessert. Probably the best profiterole I've ever had in my life. So light and deliciously fluffy. And huge! We took our friend Rick L out for his 50th birthday, and after several bottles of Crémant d'Alsace sparkling wine, followed by more bottles of wine, plus starters, main dishes and desserts, our bill for four people was less than what one-two people would get at a decent French restaurant in NYC. Affordable French dining in Paris!

D L.

Yelp
Ambiance = 5. The most beautiful bouillon that I visited. Service = 5 Well organized. No waiters pushing and shouting. Dignified service. I felt very welcomed. Food = 4.25 but better than all tulle other bouillons that I ate at. I have never seen the French cut up endives to make a salad. Use to seeing it served in whole leaves. But this is probably a cost savings measure. For dessert the month blanc was very good. This was NOT a disappointing place to visit compared to other places bouillons that seems industrial.
google avatar

SheShe C.

Yelp
Not sure why this place only has only 3.5 stars when the line was out the door with people waiting to be seated. The food was amazing and the waitress was great. Great prices as well. 2 entrees, 2 desserts, 2 wines and a bottle of water for $40. The only thing bad thing was that it was busy. That could be bad or good to you.
google avatar

Jeffrey C.

Yelp
You just have to try this place at least once when in Paris. If you have a command of French be sure to use it when making a reservation, otherwise they will seat you in the front with all the tourists. If you don't have a command of the language have your hotel make the call. Noisy, busy, crowed and I wouldn't have it any other way. I started coming here when the neighborhood was much less desirable, that was to be honest part of the charm. The food is traditional brassiere. Best experienced with a group as the vibe is tremendous not to mention the atmosphere! Put on your casual attire, kick back and enjoy, you will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful service after a few minutes waiting for a table. There was a line as expected (queue outside) bc the place is very popular, for delicious escargots among other menu items. Relaxed atmosphere in restored elegant bistro setting.

Charissa R.

Yelp
I came here when I visited Paris because I saw a video and man was it amazing. It was my favorite meal while visiting, the skirt stale was cooked and seasons to perfection! The staff was super friendly (even with my horribly broken French) and the look of the whole place was beautiful. It wasn't too light but wasn't dark at all. Best of all, prices were great. Will go again on my next trip to Paris.

Miriam S.

Yelp
Had high hopes bc the ambiance is nice and room is pretty but the experience left much to be desired. The food was average. Steak was chewy and our order was wrong. The most disappointing was that it took an hour to get our food. Felt like a giant waste of time stuck waiting. Plenty of other places I would recommend going before this spot.

Yelp
A wonderful meal in a lively atmosphere that made me feel like I was back in time. We are Americans and took our French relatives there and we all enjoyed the food.

Yelp
Great food at terrific prices. Everything was just amazing. Loved it all. When in this area of Paris you gotta stop here.

Yelp
Big pros for this place: The decor is absolutely gorgeous, theres chandeliers, painted ceilings, decorative columbs, a true French styled restaurant. The service is really great, even though our party of four arrived for lunch peak weekend time, we were seated within minutes. The place is very affordable with entrees ranging from 10-15 euros. Con: The food quite doesn't hit the mark. We ordered a range of dishes and all of them were very bland. Nothing to rave about. We ordered the rum bread pudding to share and it was incredibly cold and rigid ( unsure if that is how it is supposed to be) However, we shared a couple of glasses of wine and also ordered a bottle. The atmosphere was great and we shared lots of laughs. I won't be rushing back for the food but maybe I will come back for the wine and a different dessert.

Michael G.

Yelp
We went in the late afternoon for drinks and desserts. Our party loved the Choux Chantilly which was delicious and quite inexpensive. Service was fine. It's wonderful that places like this continue to exist - a beautiful space that is part of the fabric and history of Paris that can be enjoyed by everyone. Thank you to the management for restoring Bouillon Julien and the others and letting us visit, if only for a moment, another time and place.

Yelp
The line for this place was out the door, took 30minutes to get inside. I was expecting a lot since this seems to be a local french go to spot, since we were unwelcomed by the french people in line telling us to go to the restaurant next door and also rude staring and talking at us. Anyways, the inside of this place is super pretty and fancy, the service isn't bad. The prices are all under 10€ for dishes and the portion sizes are average. I had a glass of wine, beef soup and we had the panacotta for dessert. The beef soup was pretty good and warming, good flavor but only had like 5 beef chunks and carrots. The panacotta was okay too, maybe I'm not versed in what french panacotta is but it tasted just like yogurt to me and the fried apples were mushy. Overall, not a bad place and really good prices and atmosphere, but wasn't worth the rude french ambiance towards tourists and the long line of hype.

Yelp
Y'all be trippin if you don't think this is one of the coolest brasseries in Paris. Not only is the interior of the building some of the most impressive Art Nouveau I'd seen in all of Paris but, the food was great too! Especially for the price point...ridiculously affordable! I actually turned my head a few times thinking the menu pricing was a mistake but, it wasn't. The original concept behind Bouillon Julien was to make food affordable for the working class and have hefty portions, this has remained true since its inception. My Mom and I ordered a number of things as we wanted to split the affordable fare. The escargot was worth the price tag. Not the best I'd had but, good bang for your buck. They could have been a bit hotter. I did enjoy the steak with pepper sauce the most as it was a great little cut of beef! the chicken was also fall off the bone delicious. Go for the atmosphere, stay for the food. Such a fun place to dine in the city of light!

Yelp
Influenced by the internet recommendations, I made a dinner reservation for 2 at 6:30 pm Monday Jan 08. The place is 2-3 min walking from a metro station, with easy access. We were the first to get there at around 6:12 pm - the restaurant was still closed - and we waited outside in a temperature of 1 C (about 33 F). By 6:30 pm there were about 15-20 people in line outside behind us, the majority with reservations for 6:30 pm like us. Doors did not open until 6:35 pm, and after a couple of people went in to enquire about the delay. A single man told the group to get in but not to go to the tables. He then at random began asking for the names in the reservations and started taken random groups to tables, without any organization or concern for the order of the line. We were eventually sat at a table for two m, which was about 2.5 foot (0.75 m) across -very tiny- placed next to other similar tables side-by-side. The arrangement made us feel like eating in a single table with strangers to the left and right breathing over your food. The inside architecture of the room is indeed interesting (as per other reviews), but we did not go there to marvel over the walls or ceilings of the place. We order the specialties: (1) escargot (snails), (2) rillettes du mans (sort of a pig pâté), for appetizers, and (3) bouillon Julien, and (4) beef "strogonoff" as main dishes. Food reviews: (1) it came with six units, cooked with butter, salt and basil - very average; (2) a small quiche-like portion, soft taste, served with an unsuitable cold and very hard single toast -luckily a basket with six slices of soft bread were brought to the table and used instead; (3) the bouillon was really tasteless; essentially warm water with salt with a burnt after taste (as if the bottom of the pot were it was cooked was burnt); a few cube-like pieces of meat inside were also tasteless, fatty and chewy, with 2-3 small pieces of carrots and something similar to orzo pasta (tiny pieces of pasta) at the bottom; (4) this dish was a misnomer: I have eaten and cooked stroganoff before, and this dish is NO stroganoff (Grigory Stroganov and chef Charles Briere, must be turning in their graves!); it was rather a long strip of a broiled flank filet placed on top of a hard portion of mashed potatoes (see photo); the steak was cooked well (medium) but it was greasy (cooked in butter?), chewy and also tasteless like the mashed potatoes. Had I known about the "stroganoff" I would have avoided it, as steaks as notoriously -with very few exceptions- bad in France (compared to Brazilian and/or American steaks!). I also had a glass of the house red wine which was alright. The waiter was attentive and nice, with good english (I would give her 4/5 stars; the 2 stars for service was for the waiting outside and entering debacle). As the dinner progressed and the restaurant got more crowded we felt more like sardines inside a can! We decided to skip the dessert considering the disappointing food experience and cramping environment. Luckily the amount of money spent was not too high (about €50), but the overall experience quality was ridiculously low. Note 1: if you allow clients to make reservations for 6:30 pm, make sure the doors are open at 6:15 pm the latest, specially during frigid weather; unless you want them to turn into popsicles. Note 2: the naming "bouillon" is descriptive - like the Knorr cubes, bought in supermarkets to ENHANCE FLAVOR (e.g., when cooking Marsala sauce). Of course, this should never be a dish in and on itself, not even for soup! This restaurant seems like a tourist trap. We are definitely not going back or suggesting anyone throw away their money. Note 3: Coincidently, the previous night we went to a restaurant in Paris called "HaNoy 1988", near the Norte Dame, and had the best soup-like Pho dish I ever eaten, full of taste and consistency (the place is humble -low price- but the food is superb!!). Maybe Julien's owners could go there and learn some real cooking from their Vietnamese friends.

Yelp
This was the first stop we made when we landed in Paris. It seemed to be one of the only restaurants in the area still open late. The inside is stunning and beautiful. Food was good.

Yelp
This was a cool French experience. We had reservations and when we walked in, there were several staff standing there and nobody acknowledged us. Soon a manager came and quickly seated us. The food was very good, escargot were delicious! The Leek and hazelnut salad was very good as well. I had the beef with potatoes and it was very tender and juicy. My husband had fish, which was good, but the bed of leeks it was on was quite bitter. Overall we had a good experience and for the price you really can't beat it. Our entire family family of five had thier ovwn starter, main course, salty finishes, desserts, drinks including wine, and it was all 143 euros.

Yelp
I ordered the Fish & Chips. The chips we're fine, the fish much better. The fish was tasty and battered in a unique crusty way. Spiced just right and the crusty covering was a nice addition. Also order the coconut and mango sauce dessert. Very delightful. Light, not too sweet and and nix mix of sweet and tangy!

Yelp
Good food. Inexpensive. Does get busy so try to make reservation ahead of time. We went early with a reservation for dinner so no wait but by the time we leave, line was long outside the restaurant.

Yelp
Food is ready made. You will be served in less than 3 minutes. Please understand that you are only here to admire the architecture, Nothing else!

Yelp
I wanted to come here because it was close to where I was staying and looked beautiful inside but I should've gone anywhere else! The food was not good, my fries were so stale as if they'd been sitting out for days. It really felt like the server actively ignored us as it took a lot of effort just to ask for some water. And it took another 20 minutes to get that water! Overall a pretty bad first impression of Paris which was unfortunate because everywhere else we went was great!

Yelp
This place is beautiful! My husband and I came here with two Parisienne friends who said this place was authentic French cuisine (after eating here they apologized for bringing us as the place wasn't as good as they remembered). We tried the salmon quiche (really good), Bouillon Jullien, the chicken with fries (this was okay), and the salted caramel rice pudding (good). The place is very affordable. We came here on a Wednesday at 7pm and waited about 10-15 min to be seated.

Yelp
Lovely place and nice staff but horrible food. We had to wait a while to get it so most of it was barely warm. And it really felt like bad cafeteria food. The terrine de lapin was hard, the fish overcooked and tasteless, the strawberries were so vinegary that I could not eat them, the île flottante was definitely not floating since there barely was any sauce anglaise... extremely disappointing.

Yelp
I split the escargots with a friend, had the confit de canard, a glass of Merlot, and the chocolate mousse, for 23 euro. It was filling and I was satisfied. But that was it. There was nothing special there, not the pommes frites, the chocolate, or the reviews my friends gave of their food. The table got shrimp and rice, the bouillon, and the fish and chips. Only the latter got a good review. But not a rave. The surroundings are beautiful and I thought our waiter was very patient with us splitting the bill and a speaking broken French/English, but the hostess was incredibly rude. For the price, it was a good portion and quality. I won't be rushing back.

Yelp
We all had dinner reservations at a renowned restaurant called Boullion Julien and we were very excited to go there. It is a beautifully decorated Art Nouveau room. We got there at 6:30 and by 7 the place was filled with people waiting at the door. Unfortunately the food did not rise to the beauty of the decorations and was just average. My hubs enjoyed his Beouf Bourgogne and Our friend liked his eponymous Bouillion Julien but my girl was very disappointed in the luke warm fish and the over abundant and less than tasty zucchini. I got a few different appetizers, one of which was "Champignons à la Grecque" which was loaded with cilantro, a leaf akin to soap or chlorine to my taste buds! We were in Greece last year and I don't recall a leaf of cilantro while we were there! A beautiful space but it is surviving on the fumes of an earlier era.

Yelp
This is a cafe on a street in Paris not in the best of neighborhoods. When you step inside, it's very pretty. It evokes a Belle Époque atmosphere. Aside from that, I have no idea why people flock here. The food just wasn't good. Especially their specialty: beef bouillon. It's beef broth with pieces of quinoa & red beef chucks. It's rather bland. I'd definitely skip this place.

Yelp
Located in the heart of Paris, and close to all major Boulevards and theaters, the Brasserie Julien, inaugurated in 1938, is a historical monument. With its Art Nouveau style, grand moldings, mirrors and huge "Women-flowers" painted on glass paste, Julien offers a unique setting and a kitchen just as refined. We had an 8:30 Pm reservation, and we were seated right away upon our entrance. I couldn't help but WATCH our waiter's maneuvering. This guy was like a freaking machine. From welcoming the new customers, to seating them, serving, clearing and re-setting up tables. It was like a work of art. I applaud him. What was ordered: A bottle of white wine. Appetizers: - The tart with goat cheese, red onion fondue, smoked duck breast and roasted figs. - Duck foie gras, fine Port jelly and toasted country bread. Main Course: - Seared Norwegian salmon, vegetables, citrus vinaigrette with marjoram. - Chicken breast of Landes, Carnaroli risotto of mushrooms. - Grilled scallops and roasted wild prawns, risotto, and shellfish cream. Dessert: - Creme Brulee with Bourbon vanilla flambée. - Baked apples with cinnamon and rosemary, spiced ice cream. Everything we ate was absolutely delicious, the portions are just about the right amount, however, it was on the higher price bracket.

Yelp
My wife and I had dinner here during our vacation. I had the steak and my wife had the ribs. Both were perfectly made and we're delicious. For desert, we had the carpet and the profiterole. Both were made on the spot and were amazing. The decor is art nouveau and very unique. The service is also great. All the waiters spoke English.

Yelp
Ok, read about it in NY times and the art nouveau interior is spectacular. But the food, argh. Go if you need to sit down for a bit, enjoy the interior, and drink some cheap wine, but not if you are hungry for decent food. We made reservations, got the rabbit pate starter - dry, but the sauce was ok. Then had the steak au poivre, ordered it medium, with pommes grenailles. It came rare and still had no flavor, with French fries instead of roasted potatoes, and the "pepper" sauce was bland gravy with maybe 2 peppercorns. I would've been ok with the fries, but they were horrible. My son had andouille sausage - he likes tripe, but said he hopes not to get sick from his meal, and there was no mutard ancienne as advertised. Luckily my son is fluent in French so we had a conversation with the waitress who apologized profusely and basically said that she knows, and that she's just a server, not a cook. The wine was 14 euro for a liter of table wine, a good value. I almost spent 36 for a poully fuse and am so glad I did not, as it would've been depressing to drink such nice wine with inedible food. I read a few bad reviews, but also some good ones and The NY Times convinced us to go. If you want the proper brouillon experience, go to broullon Pigalle and wait in line for an hour - and you'll get the cheap but good French food you were expecting. We went there on another night and had a great experience. The food was not gourmand, but totally fine, especially for the price.

Yelp
Worst food and service we had in 10 days of travel in France. We sent a steak back for being cooked to oblivion and a manager came to yell at us and tell us that he's unwilling to help. This restaurant ruined our night and is a huge tourist trap. Beware!!!!!!

Yelp
This was the worst customer service I have ever received at a restaurant. They have no respect for their customers. It's a tourist trap...save your time and stay away.

Yelp
I'm quite surprised to see Julien with only 3 stars! I had a fantastic meal here the other night. The decor has a huge wow-factor, it's very... well, French! Lovely frescos and giant mirrors adorn every wall, and I fell in the love with the standing lamps. But onto the food! Both the fois gras and the Noix de St Jacques were divine, and the desserts were fantastic too. The white burgundy round it off nicely. Highly recommended.
