While visiting Montreal this week and staying in the Plateau Mont Royal area, my wife and I have gone out everyday walking to different areas of town. After enjoying the pedestrian-friendly Ave. Mont-Royal, we decided to walk up Saint-Denis to the pedestrian-friendly area of Rue De Castelnau Street east from Saint-Denis to De Gaspé.
It was a long walk for us, but we were soon rewarded because almost as soon as we turned the corner onto Rue De Castelnau, we came across Boulangerie Le Marquis, with a sign out front stating that it was gluten-free. And since my wife has Celiac Disease, that sign was like a beacon of sunshine in an otherwise dreary, rainy morning. And it even got better as we learned that everything in the bakery was gluten-free, including not only all the pastries, but the wraps and other items as well. And as a vegan, I was also pleased to see several delicious-looking vegan pastries as well.
The only downsides to the boulangerie if you are planning to dine in, are that they only have seating for two near the window, and they don't serve coffee. On the bright side however, we were told that we could buy a cup of coffee at the cafe next door, and then bring it back and drink it here while enjoying the gluten-free pastries. And that is exactly what we did.
My wife ordered a gluten-free almond croissant ($5.25) and I selected a vegan almond and pear tarte ($6.49). And since it, too, was of course gluten-free, my wife was able to taste some of it as well. Both items were so delicious that, as soon as we finished metaphorically licking our plates, my wife ordered a couple of items to take back to our apartment to enjoy later. This time she selected an eggplant wrap ($11.99) and an almond and chocolate croissant (5.49). She also made plans to return just before our trip back to Savannah, so that she can enjoy some of the delicious items once we are back home. She has pronounced this the best gluten-free bakery she has ever been to.
