The Best Bakeries and Pastry Shops in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Winner of Montreal’s best baguette in 2020, this Plateau bakery is also a popular destination for pastries — think choquettes (French pastry sugar puffs), Gâteau Basque (a traditional sweet from the Northern Basque region of France), and a rotation of seasonal fruit tarts. It’s a great place for people-watching, especially during the summer when Mont-Royal Avenue becomes pedestrian-only." - Daniel Bromberg

Café-Bakery Le Toledo Arrives on Mont-Royal Next Week | Eater Montreal

"Slated to open next Wednesday, March 13 at 351 Mont-Royal Avenue East, I describe Le Toledo as a cafe-bakery led by owner François Barriere and head chef Riccardo Arnoult; Barriere is making his first move into Montreal's food scene after a career in finance, while Arnoult—formerly lead at South Shore bakery L’Amour du Pain—brings years of baking experience. They plan to offer a range of baked goods from hearty breads to light pastries, muffins, and croissants, plus small lunch items like sandwiches and soups—"anything that can be supported by a very very good bread," Barriere says. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., the large space (a former library with 14-foot ceilings) seats about 40 across couches, tables, benches, and lounge areas and enjoys a prime Mont-Royal near St-Denis location expected to draw steady foot traffic. Coffee will come from Structure Roasters, whose lead baristas Jérôme Grenier-Desbiens and Matthieu Carrier have coached the team on preparation, and Barriere hopes to place equal emphasis on both cafe and bakery so "when people come they can have a very good coffee and a very good croissant at the same time," ultimately aiming to "open the best bakery in Montreal." - Audrey Carleton

Le Toledo is a popular bakery on Mont-Royal Avenue, a lively pedestrian street lined with cafés, bakeries, and restaurants. Several locals we met recommended it, and it’s easy to see why. The bakery is quite large, with plenty of tables and seating inside, making it a comfortable spot to enjoy your treats on site. When we visited mid-afternoon, there was a short line, but it moved quickly thanks to the efficient team of staff behind the counter. Everyone was friendly, spoke both French and English, and happily explained the pastries and their ingredients. Prices are very reasonable: cookies start around $3 CAD, croissants at $2.50 CAD, and pastries like brioche and cinnamon rolls are also available. I ordered a chocolatine (pain au chocolat) for $3.25 CAD and a caramel cream cruffin for $5 CAD. Both were excellent—crispy on the outside, soft and airy on the inside, and full of flavor. If you’re strolling Mont-Royal Avenue, Le Toledo is absolutely worth a stop. Grab a couple pastries to enjoy on the spot or take away—you really can’t go wrong here.

Google
From the friendly staff to the vast array of baked goods, you can’t beat this place. Their artisan bread selection is great. They have various sandwiches in savory items, and every type of coffee you want. But the best part to me were the flaky French pastries, and various cookies they make. In my travels, I visit every French bakery up, possibly can. This place ranks way up at the top level. Add to that, the staff is quite friendly and accommodating with no attitude at all.

Google
This is a very good boulangerie located along Mont-Royal Ave East that is open from 7am to 6pm daily. They have a fair sized indoor seating area, many visitors seem to pop in for morning take-away. There was a short queue when we arrived 7.30am midweek. You'll find a nice range of mostly French style breads, tarts, pastries and bakery products. We particularly liked their quiche and almond filled croissants. Coffees served up on the day were very good as well. This seemed like a great boulangerie, one we'd like visit regularly if we lived in the area. Would gladly revisit next time in Montreal.

Google
My cookie prayers have been answered!! Due to my food sensitivity to eggs and dairy, it's extremely difficult to find cookies that I can safely enjoy. TOLEDO's vegan chocolate cookies have answered my prayers!! Not only are they dairy free and egg free, they ACTUALLY taste good. Chewy and chocolatey, just like a good cookie should be!! Sadly, I only discovered them towards the end of my stay in Montreal. I brought 4 back to Vancouver with me...should have bought more!!! TOLEDO, any plans to open a bakery in Vancouver??

How many delicious pastries can I eat? Great selection of classics and new ones. Excellent bread. Great space for talking and watching. Long line but it moves

Google
Opens very early which is kind of unique in the neighbourhood. Watching fresh bread being baked and amazing French pastries in large portions with tasty coffees is indeed an amazing start of the day!

Google
Nice bakery in the Plateau. I was glad to see a lot of locals coming in and out. They certainly are busy. Their workflow reminds me of that at Porto’s, the Cuban bakery from Burbank, California. The servers are fast. Come early in the day because they sell out of stuff. I’m no croissant expert, but the one I had here was better than the one I had at a random cafe the other day. The croissant (CAD$2.50) from Toledo was airy and flaky. I had an iced americano $3.50, and it tasted great as well. The peach kouign amann $5 was a new thing in August. I enjoyed this the most. It was so dense and not terribly sweet. The focaccia $14 was also really good! It was a large square, and they cut it into two triangles for me. The dough was great. This makes me think their bread must be delicious too. I would try some bread next time. I bought a package of the vanilla madeleines $6.50, but I didn’t really like them. I didn’t see other people buying them either, so maybe it’s not just me that thinks the madeleines aren’t good. Plenty of seating inside but with non-matching tables and chairs. They have large windows, so the sun makes it hot inside. Apple Pay/credit card accepted. No wifi No bathroom

Google
Le Toledo Bakery offers a wonderful balance of quality and charm. The croissant with ham, cheese, and béchamel is delicate and full of flavor. Their sourdough bread and hamburger buns are simply outstanding, crafted with care and expertise. A good espresso or cappuccino completes the experience beautifully. The staff is always courteous, attentive, and welcoming. With such excellent quality at fair prices, Le Toledo is a place I would return to without hesitation. IYKYK checkout how to use them buns, see photos.

Yelp
Great cozy bakery to start the morning with a coffee and croissant. Staff is friendly, efficient, and will switch to English quickly and easily. We have grabbed a baguette to go with our DIY charcuterie as well. Must try a sandwich sometime.

Yelp
In Mont Royal area, there are so many pastry shops that it's hard to choose which one to step into (for real) and once you do, it's even harder to decide what to order. We ended up at Le Toledo and tried a pistachio flan, a caramel cream cruffin, and a cookie. The service was quick, and they do accept credit cards. The first server we spoke to didn't speak English, but they quickly found a bilingual staff member who was helpful. Since all the pastry names and descriptions are in French, Google Translate doesn't always capture the nuances, so it's best to double-check with staff if you're unsure or have nuts allergies! As for the pastries: the cruffin was a bit on the dry side and not as flaky as I had hoped. I have eaten plenty of cruffins to say this. The cookie was tasty, while the pistachio flan was a little underwhelming--it lacked pistachio flavor and wasn't as smooth/creamy as expected. There's an area to sit indoors and some tables outside as well. I'm glad we gave it a try, but I think there are better pastry options in the area. Oh, their prices seem to be a bit higher than others. This was my 7th pâtisserie and day 3 in Montreal!

Yelp
The best almond croissant I have ever had (and I've had a few). Very fast service. Really very good coffee. I would highly recommend this bakery.

Yelp
This neighborhood bakery has good selection of bread and pastries. Espresso was smooth and medium bodies which hit the spot for me. Croissant was buttery and crunchy. Brioche was sweet and soft.

Yelp
We had been walking through the Plateau and needed a place for coffee and just to get off our feet. It was close to the end of the day so they didn't have a lot of sweets to offer but I managed to find an almond bun which tasted more like marzipan (which is still almond) and was just the right size to satisfy. To wash it down was a lovely matcha latte while my friend had a perfectly prepared Americano. What makes this café so enticing (besides the tasty sweets, fresh from the oven) are the windows which surround one side of the establishment. There is a bench that runs along side it, complete with little cushions for comfort. The staff was friendly and quick and I'll be back when I return home the next time.

Yelp
Ultimately, it's their takeaway sandwiches, but their pastry, that earn Le Toledo a 5-star review. This is not to say their pastry is not enjoyable or well made, but for pastry and desserts, I prefer Les Co'pains d'abord. Still, this is a such a vibrant boulangerie in such a vibrant city, and we did have great visits. Is this place ever quiet? The seating options are interesting because they have couches, window benches with cushions and small side tables, and a big communal table with benches from which you can enjoy the constant flow of customers moving in line. The staff here seemed to be efficient and appropriately friendly, and I saw many of them multitask. The pastry highlights were chausson dejeuner, chausaon d'oeuf, gateau basque, and flan Parisienne. The others, including choco bombe, pain suisse, and biscuit choco, were decent but I probably wouldn't get again. Now the sandwiches. The bagnat poulet had big pieces of incredibly tender chicken meat with thick sources of fresh tomato on a soft roll, and the ciabathon's blend of tuna salad, rocket, and the delicious olive ciabatta was a total knockout. I hope they keep improving and stay open for a long time.

Yelp
An amazing bakery in Montreal! This was definitely one of my favorite ones. We came in for coffee and a croissant and ended up staying to just relax for a while. They have a decent amount of seating but were actually pretty full when we came in the afternoon. And there's free WiFi so that's a bonus! I got the almond croissant cause I love almond croissants and I wasn't expecting too much but it was actually really good. It was so puffed up and jam packed with that almond filling, which I love. The only con was that the edges tasted a little burnt, but I would honestly still get it again. Overall a great bakery to pick up pastries and baked goods, there aren't too many so make sure to go early before it sells out. Coffee was also pretty good!
google avatar

Veronica L.

Yelp
Fantastic cafe with a TON of pastry and bread options. Everything is made fresh and in-house as well. I ordered the matcha latte and it was PERFECT, and the Almond Croissant had this delicious almond paste inside - can't recommend that combo enough! The employees were quick and very helpful. There's a good amount of seating, but it's pretty popular, so you'll likely be able to grab a seat when someone leaves. Highly recommend if you're looking for a nice pastry and beverage!

Yelp
Le chausson aux pommes est gigantesque est une dinguerie. Trop bon et croustillant. Dommage que je parte demain j'aurais bien aimé prendre tout le menu

Yelp
THE CUTEST COFFEE SHOP IVE EVER BEEN TO! You walk in and they have so many delectable pastries with their own flour which you can buy. They have a full espresso and coffee menu. Highly recommend all food and drink options available. The vibes inside were immaculate. The decor and everything was so creative and cozy. Really loved discovering this place!
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
TLDR quick review - Get the almond croissant! Probably one of the best I've had and I'm sure to always get one when I'm in the area. Their regular croissants are also great and very flaky. I recommend this too. Latte was good. Matcha here is mid.

Yelp
Our lodging was right above Le Toledo, so my friend and I decided to check it out for breakfast on a Friday morning around 10:30. The space is large and has some seating. There was a large table in the middle but it was roped off, but so I'm not sure whether you can sit there. It sounded like their baguette won best baguette in Montreal 2 years ago according to some signs in French, so we got one to make breakfast sandwiches in our Sonder. It was only $3, which I thought was very reasonable. We also asked the employee helping us what was popular there, and she recommended the apple turnover as well as a French pastry called gateau basque, which is a pastry with almond cream inside. The apple turnover was a bit too large for us, but we did get the gateau basque to try, and boy was it good! If you like almonds, definitely get this. I'm not a huge bread person and couldn't tell whether the baguette was the best I've ever had, but it was pretty solid. It was crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside.
google avatar

Jo L.

Yelp
We came around noon and got the almond croissant and vegan chocolate chip cookie. Both were absolutely delicious. The cookie was crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside. The chocolate and sugar had caramelized around the edges and did not disappoint in their rich flavors. It being vegan did not take away from how good it was, which is something I find to be usually the opposite. The croissant was one of the best croissants I've ever had in my life. It was very decadent, so I was glad to have a friend to share it with. It's sweet but not too sweet and incredibly buttery. The almond was present, but subtle-- not too overpowering. The shell was light and crispy, but the inside moist and soft. I would definitely recommend checking out Le Toledo if you want to have your bakery fix! It was the first stop on our bakery hopping trip, and it was one of our favorites for sure.
google avatar

Marc M.

Yelp
Busy on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Cool spring day as the masses huddled in for a hot beverage. The raisin spiral bun was devinaly decadent. We enjoyed the eclectic decor with a couple of coffees. Crowded but enjoyable ambiance.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
An absolute treasure. Not only are the pastries outstanding (try the basque gateau, at only $4 on the best-value delicacies I've ever tasted), but the coffee is also top-tier, and I got a bag of the "Jordan" granola today- just wow. It's spectacular, chock full of beautiful grains, seeds, nuts, and (for this one- there are two granolas on offer) pieces of dark chocolate. I'd be here daily if I lived in Montreal.
google avatar

Clara P.

Yelp
Might this be one of the best almond croissants I've ever had? Yes. This place is incredibly popular, and for good reason. I came back twice to this place on my trip because I was literally DREAMING of the almond croissant. I also tried some of their other baked goods and they were delicious, but paled in comparison to the artful croissant. tl;dr GET THE ALMOND CROISSANT

Huxley P.

Yelp
Very yummy pastries and a bunch of different options. Savoury and sweet. The service is very good.

Yelp
google avatar

Madeline R.

Yelp
Great coffee and pastries - the almond pastry is fabulous. If you can get it right out of the oven it's out of this world. Quick service - you can sit in the cafe if there is room. I would recommend this if the major bakeries are closed and you need a quick bite (Kouign Amann) On the main ave Mont-Royale E.

Deb G.

Yelp
Yummy bakery. Tough to decide what to get. Croissants were nice. Nice selection of breads and sweets.

Christy L.

Yelp
Great coffee, service, atmosphere. We ate lunch here three out of the six days we stayed in the Plateau this summer. Love the kale and quinoa salad.

Yelp
Great find Amazing espresso Lots of baked goods Nice interior What else ya need..? Did I mention it was a great find

Yelp
Good coffee. Good baked goods. Liked the quiche. Service was fine. Was with group of 6 and all were happy

Yelp
A delightful selection of baked good. Worth a visit for the croissants. Thinking of going back and trying the rest of the menu.
google avatar

Yelp
My friend got a almond croissant here and I ate a significant amount of it. It was incredible. One of the best croissants I have had. The outside is super buttery and crisp and the almond filling was flavorful and not overly sweet. It's located a nice street that was great for window shopping. Definitely worth a stop!

S D.

Yelp
Don't bother unless you speak French. Man behind the counter was very rude when I asked if he spoke English he muttered, ""Eh. Some." and walked away. He seemed uninterested in our business once he realized we didn't speak French. Another woman finally saw us standing there after a few minutes and came to help, but by that time all but one person in our group decided to leave. The one member of our group that stayed to order just pointed to something, paid, and left . Her flan was just okay. If you are content with just pointing, not asking questions, and going based on how things look then this bakery might work for you. If you have any questions or want to talk to someone about the options--forget it. Too many other fabulous places to bother dealing with the hassle here. It wasn't worth the rude behavior for a mediocre pastry.
google avatar

Geri C.

Yelp
Our host took us here for our first Montreal breakfast of coffee and pastries before starting our guided tour of the nearby charming neighborhood and the city. The neighborhood with multiple street closures and parking difficulty reminded me of a more genteel Brooklyn! Besides the clean, welcoming ambience, I was impressed by the high quality coffee and artisan pastries. The muffins and quiche were super yummy. Staff were very friendly. What a great way to start our Montreal visit!
google avatar

Pradeep K.

Yelp
Thanks to a friends suggestion, and being next door to my favourite croissant place, it wasn't hard to locate this gem of a boulangerie. I only get their baguette, and I love it. Nice hard and crunchy crust, chewy inside, add butter or brie....bam! La vita bella! So baguette enthusiasts, do give this place a shot, maybe even their patisserie too (not really my thing)
google avatar

Lian A.

Yelp
We wandered into this coffee shop, and I am glad we did. This place was not a cookie cutter type cafe. There was an impressive selection of freshly baked breads on display, pastries (both sweet and savoury), coffees/teas. They have an *extensive* list of milk alternatives for the lactose intolerant too! There was a large outdoor bench type seating at the time of my visit, and indoor seating as well. I got a savoury ham and cheese type pastry. The outside was crispy and sweet (drizzled with honey), and the inside was stuffed with a generous amount of ham.
google avatar

Charles N.

Yelp
Named after a Toledo scale left by a previous owner, this bakery slash coffee shop slash lunch spot opens up to a beautiful space with 14 foot ceilings and tons room for people to browse, enjoy a coffee, stop for a quick bite or even lounge on the long benches, antique chairs and poufs. There's a nice selection of breads, some light pastries, muffins, croissants and for lunch, a variety of sandwiches, vegetarian bowls, vegan bowls, salads and soups... all good bread buddies! Oh oh, and they also serve your favorite cup or coffee from Structure Roasters, new in Old Montreal. What interesting about Toledo, is the founder, Francois Barrière, came from the banking market and jumped into bakery - his first venture into the food scene, pursuing his true passion and love for bread. This said his business background does come in handy and he is backed by a solid partner: Riccardo Arnoult, former lead at Amour du Pain, adds years of experience, and lead a team of bakers and pasty chefs who's mission is to delight us with their creations. Picked up a croissant, a baguette and a small loaf of dark chocolate bread, interestingly very good with cheese. Will probably come back to try the coffee and see how this place unfolds in the coming weeks.
google avatar

Beverly H.

Yelp
Loved the neighbourhood, murals on all the other old building. Le Toledo stood out with a clean modern exterior, but the entrance as well as the inside were welcoming, spacious and cozy. Melt in your mouth pastries and croissants , crusty bread, take-home frozen goods. Other customers were thoroughly enjoying their coffees and their foods looked and, they said, scrumptious. If possible, I would go there every day, maybe more often. Staff members smiled and helped me in French or English.
google avatar

Xue L.

Yelp
Pretty good coffee and pastries. I tried the almond chocolatine and small latte. The chocolatine was fresh and the almond taste was strong. It was a bit too oily and hard on the edges. The latte was milky and pretty good. The service is quick and the staff are nice. They don't have many tables inside.
google avatar

Ron B.

Yelp
Busy place on a weekend morning so be prepared for a line up. Croissants are among the best in the area. Unfortunately the sandwiches on baguettes had a crust that cut the top of my mouth although filling was great.
google avatar

Anna C.

Yelp
I've been looking forward to trying Toledo's baguette because the bakery won best MTL baguette maker 2020. The bakery is currently open for takeout during the covid-19 crisis. We picked up a baguette and almond chocolatine. The baguette is excellent!! The pastry was also delicious and generously filled with almond and chocolate.

Melissa D.

Yelp
Very nice almond croissant, almond crust pastry, and raising vanilla swirl pastry. The staff were very nice and the area is awesome! I would return here.
google avatar

Josepha H.

Yelp
They have great pastries and coffee when they are in stock. It recommend getting there early!
google avatar

Urvi T.

Yelp
Delicious treats and pastries for a nice breakfast with the family! My favorite is the raisin roll (which was by far soooooo good that I'm still thinking about it)! And the sesame buns are so subtle in flavor that it's a great accompanying dish. Croissants are a bit buttery but still good! Everyone is really sweet here and the ambiance is a cute cafe vibe. Check it out for a nice sweet start to the day.
google avatar

Stella J.

Yelp
A cute little cafe with an assortment of savoury and sweet food. We tried the pear tart and it was super flaky.

Yelp
Le Toledo - Montreal. Delicious chai latte ok almond croissant, I found it was not fresh when I bought it this morning. Iced coffee was good .
google avatar

Aria I.

Yelp
Good bakery but quite expensive for Montreal. Interesting atmosphere inside, good for families and large groups but maybe not for a one on one

Crystal N.

Yelp
Just one word! Wow! Good service, amazing baked goods! We had the smoked salmon focaccia, a raspberry chocolate muffin and an almond croissant that is worth dreaming about!
google avatar

Jackie S.

Yelp
Can't say enough positive things about this great bakery on Mount Royal. The layout is inviting with lots of seating and, most importantly, the baked goods are to die for. They have a wide variety of breads and the croissants and cookies were delicious. They also have really cool beverage choices including a grapefruit lemonade. I have been a few times now and plan to go back.
google avatar

Katerina B.

Yelp
One thing I must say about this place is that it has excellent service. Their variety of sandwiches is good and their coffee is strong. Good muffins and quiche and this is a great place to meet up with friends or come to work on your computer.
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
This is one of the best bakeries I've ever been to. World-class bread served by nice people who don't laugh at my pitiful French. The croissants are delectable and the bread crusty on the outside with a tender, chewy crumb. I'd be there every day if I lived in the area.
google avatar

Leslie L.

Yelp
Best coffee we've had in Montreal. The staff is very friendly and the breads and baked goods are fresh, tasty and quite awesome. Le Toledo has become our favorite morning ritual!

Eva W.

Yelp
Their spot is very beautiful, big and lot of natural light. Staff is nice. However, theirs sandwiches are way expensive since mine was almost empty... Got one cheap small slide of ham and one salad leave, with mayo. Something I can do better at home! Also not impressed by their matcha latte that is too milky and not enough tasty.

Rc L.

Yelp
I'm here several times a week. Really great atmosphere and friendly service. Fresh, quality items. Wish they had more than one soup option though!
