Montreal’s Best Bakeries for Bread - Eater Montreal

"A plateau staple since 1999 with locations on Mont-Royal, Rachel, and Masson, Boulangerie Les Co’Pains d’Abord is well known for its artisanal breads as well as croissants and pastries all baked by hand. Also, not to be missed are its signature gingerbread men cookies." - Mallory Frayn, Erinn Blicher

Tasty butter croissant but awful service. Staff didn’t acknowledge my presence and didn’t care what I wanted to order. They instead just stood by the register and chatted with each other. I really had to flagged them twice and repeated my order several times before they could get the 3 pastries I wanted. Also got a cheese croissant and praline croissant. They were just okay. Would recommend the butter croissant though.

Small place in neighborhood at 5 min from metro Mont Royal (corner Rachel/St-Denis). Good brew coffee and viennoiseries that looks like home made. Several artisanal breads style miche but never taste them. Discount of 15% on beverage when you bring your cup. Staff seem disorganized and forgetful with orders. During morning rush hour it gets tight and ppl wait outside or come later for their order. I order a soup thinking it was fresh made but the guy said he could put it in microwave... I never got it so I ask a refund and regret tipping... My capp was pretty good thu and my abricotine too. So place it's most for take and go and quick bite. No bathroom either

Google
I asked for two loaves of the 9 grain bread. It was nothing like 9 grain too soft and I do not see any grains except for oat and wheat germ. Total rip off and not happy. It is essentially white bread with wheat germ and some oat flakes on top.

Worst pain au chocolat I had in my life, even worse than Starbucks. It is obviously undercooked as the pictures show, how dare you serve this to customers?

Google
Amazing bakery, I recommend just about everything we tried was amazing, but I think the cheese croissant was the best I've ever had. Amazing!

Google
Everything looked and smelled delicious! Ordered le petit Breton and a chocolatine. Although I marginally prefer the chocolatine at Kouign Amann it was still delicious.

Yelp
Croissant du fromagggggeeeee. I had one of these each day for a week! The perfect start for the day in Montréal. They have multiple locations, but seem to be well respected by locals for their croissants and pastries. They're always making up a fresh batch, but don't visit too late it the afternoon or you might miss the last! Always seems to have a small line but it moves very quickly. Little seating room, but if you want to eat inside it's definitely possible. Always a must stop on our trips to Montréal.

Yelp
I did not quite understand the hype behind this place. I got here about 2 hours prior to closing and they had a few items left. I like Eclairs and they had one or two left- so i bought one and tried it. They were out of the lemon tarts. The eclair was good but not great. The prices are reasonable.

Yelp
Great bakery in the plateau. I have tried a bunch of their pastries throughout time and pretty much almost everything is good. Some of the best croissants in town! Their raspberry chocolate pie is to die for and totally worth the calories. Make sure to get the bigger pie since everyone will most likely go for a second piece :-) If you haven't been, check it out for yourself! The lines ups speak for themselves ;-)

Yelp
The croissant are so good! They were very crunchy, very flaky! The only downside is that they were a bit hard, a bit too thick. But you could really taste the butter, which is positive, obviously haha! The staff is also nice! Very smiley.

Yelp
Opened by a man named Jacques and named after Georges Brassens song, Les Co'pains D'abord is a small little bakery that offers a variety of different types of breads and croissants. The hubs and I stopped by while in the area, as we had heard that they're known for their buttery croissants. We had ordered one, and I was a little sad that they had run out of the cheese ones already T___T The regular croissant was okay, but it wasn't as buttery as it was described (I actually found the shape of it pretty funny) :P The hubs enjoyed it, as he stated that it was slightly different, not too sweet, and was flaky enough. It may have been slightly better if it was right out of the oven or warmed up, as I thought it was more on the dry end. Staff was super friendly, and there's limited seating inside. There is also a little water cooler with complimentary water. +complimentary water from the cooler +friendly staff

Yelp
In the battle of the Croissants, Les Co'Pains d'Abord is considered a contender. With three locations, this place is a favourite among locals. I visited the location on Mont-Royale immediately after sampling a Croissant at Kouign-Amann as it was just down the street. This was the 2nd of 3 stops with only one focus, the Croissant! The criteria: My perfect Croissant isn't about the butter. It's about the texture, the appearance, and the crumbs! A good Croissant will taste delicious, a great Croissant will leave you wanting more. The outside should be crispy and a nice golden brown with white near the folds. The inside should be light, soft, and airy on the inside without being chewy. Most of all, it should hold together and produce very few crumbs. The Croissant was definitely all of these. The outside was a little crispier that the one from Kouign-Amann, but it was not as buttery. From a pure pastry aspect, both were spot on in hitting the mark. Tough call on this so far, but if I had to choose between crispy vs buttery, I'd give it to buttery in this case. While the croissant looked better with golden brown and slivers of white, it produced much more crumbs. The edge goes to Kouign-Amann.

Yelp
Food 5/5 Service 2/5 You can't find better croissants and chocolatines. The service is unfriendly and impatient unfortunately. The coffee isn't good and expensive. However the place is small and cozy and the croissants are THAT GOOD! Worth the detour each Sunday morning!

Yelp
a great little treasure in Le Plateau-mont-royal! Wonderful pastries & coffee (and staff!).

Yelp
This sweet cosy shop on Mont Royal offers some of the tastiest treats I've ever had and by far some of the best most flaky and tastiest croissants; you need to try the almond chocolate croissant. Make sure to grab a cup of coffee too cause it's seriously good although I must admit the milk was a little too hot during my last visit. They offer light lunches and tasty sandwiches for lunch but get here before the peak hour lunch rush or the wait may be super long. The shop doesn't have many seats and it's quite loud with all the coming and going, so not the spot to get any work done, but try it out anyways ..

Yelp
Great little local bakery. Seems the whole neighbourhood congregates there as it's so popular, and with good reason. The viennoiserie are really top notch

Yelp
Tried their baguette for lunch. It was good, but not phenomenal. I also purchased a chocolatine aux amandes and a cheese croissant, it was definitely worth the trip in the summer heat!

Yelp
This was my last stop on my way out of Montreal, and I'm glad I made it! It has a very authentic feel, and I love the styling of the exterior of the shop. Almost that alone led me to this specific shop over just any other random bakery. The shop was bustling, but even then the wait was not long. Everything smells and looks so tantalizing, especially the croissants, which I left with a bag of! The chocolate croissant... to die for, especially if it is still warm. I hope to return someday!

Yelp
Les Co'Pains D'abord is, imho, the home of the very best tasting and most beautiful full-butter croissant in Montreal. One is not sure whether to just stare at it, take a picture or show it off it's so pretty. The indecision completely vanishes once you have a bite of this buttery piece of heaven. The problem then becomes stopping yourself before your liver decides to vacate your body. All the pastries I have tried there over the years were all delicious. I am partial to the raspberry clafoutis that has a rich and creamy filling in a buttery cookie crust. The bakery on Mont-Royal (there are 2 other locations on Masson close to 4th Ave. and Rachel close to St-Denis that I never visited) has a small area to order and offers only 6 or 7 tables to sit at. I usually go there on weekend mornings when it's bursting at the seams with customers. Even then, there are so many clerks behind the counter that the wait is never more than 5 min. to be served. They also have very good coffee and hot chocolate.

Yelp
Very delicious pastries! Quick service and very nice people. Perfect for walking to grab something quick to take home. I would recommend the chocolate almond croissants. Amazing!!

Yelp
Best croissants in Montreal... and maybe even better than the ones in Paris! I havent had any other items beside the pains au chocolats and croissants, au fromage and regular. It's a small place though, so I take to go.

Yelp
Simple and lovely. An excellent selection. Everything we tried was divine. They were patient with our broken high school French when ordering. Will be back tomorrow...

Yelp
The baguette here is one of the best that I've had! Has a slight sourdough taste but very slight. Crunchy and not too dense! Since we walked in after hitting kouign amann I didn't pick up the croissant here but I did get an extra palmier for the road. The palmier was big! The ends had that nice brown caramelization and super flaky! There were a bunch of other things I wanted to try but will save for my next trip up to Montreal! The place was super busy when we got there at around 1pm. But I think it's prob busy all day long!! Def coming back!!!

Yelp
The chocolate and cheese croissants are very good. Also got a 9 grain loaf which is great. They had a variety of other pasteries and sweets that looked wonderful. Had a cosy atmosphere with small tables near the front.

Yelp
This is my #1 stop when I visit the Plateau. Their Kouign Amann and Jesuites are incredible pastries that blow my mind. I take all my visitors there so they can enjoy the experience as well. The coffee is strong and, when asked, the staff are very helpful at explaining what is in each item.

Yelp
Was recommended by our AirBnB host (a young French couple working abroad), and the croissants were amazing- regular, almond and chocolate! Stopped in every morning before exploring the city.

Yelp
Always a good sign to enter a bakery before 8am on a Saturday morning, and there already be a line. There must be something good going on! And there definitely was! Delicious croissants and assorted other viennoiseries. The baguette rustique was pretty darn good too. And with display cases full of tempting goodies, pastries, cakes, breads, etc, I will definitely be back to find something I can call my favorite, because I'm pretty certain I will find it here.

Yelp
The croissants should be illegal, because they are highly addictive. Put this place on your bakery crawl. Every time I've came here on a weekend morning, it's been busy busy busy! I guess other people have heard about their great croissants too. In other news, the coffee is good, the bread is solid, and the other baked goods are great. All in all, a respectable bakery to call your own in a city chalk full of them.

Yelp
I was here to try their croissant and baguette. Turned out their products were not as good as some of the reviews suggested. Sure, their croissant smelled buttery but not flaky enough to my liking. As for the baguette, the crust was fine yet the crumb was far from creamy and moist.

Yelp
The desserts were sooo good! Great presentation, good variety, decadent treats, this place is very busy.

Yelp

Yelp
Great place to get your morning croissants. It's a co-op, run by friendly granola people in the middle of gourmet gulch. The baguettes and bread are ok, but I really love the pasteries: chocolatines, croissants, chocolatines aux amandes, baluchons. For lunch the goats cheese pizza is great. There is also a great goat's cheese panini.

Yelp
At the Mont Royal station there is an information booth. I asked the woman there where the best bakery was since Au Kouign-Amann was closed. She gave me a card to Boulangerie Les Co'Pains d'Abord. I decided to walk the 15 minute or so to get there and I was rewarded with some great pastries. I had a croissant, an apple turnover, and an iced coffee. All were excellent. The croissant in particular was one of the best I've ever had. It was slightly sweet, buttery, and flakey. The pastries were so good that I got two more of them on my way out. Also, the coffee was delicious so I got a bag of their beans so that I could bring it back home. Service was also friendly and helpful. The bakery is also very busy with a continuous line of customers. Thankfully there are many people behind counter to help. I'm just sorry that this bakery isn't in New York City. I'd probably be there every day.
