I ate here once before 15 months ago. It was a late night order, and despite that, I found the quality and portion size top rate. Recently, they have been new signs outside, and I had imagined there might be new owners.
But when I entered, I discovered it was the same folks. And you know what? The food was every bit as good. They take a lot of pride in what they do, and the employee who spoke to me last time told me all about it. Well he was long gone, but I heard the same story this time, and could really taste it. Many places skimp on the fryer oil, keeping it too long. You can really taste what places do that. Those never get my repeat business.
Not here. Everything is clean and crisp. In fact, when I put my order in on the phone, they told me when to come by because they wanted to make sure the fish was just coming out of the fryer when I picked it up. So I went and did an errand, came back, and arrived three minutes before we had talked about. The gentleman at the counter apologized, and said the fish was just finishing being fried. Exactly 3 minutes later, and on time, My order was done. In fact, it was three orders of Fish and chips. I had asked for the three-piece portion size, and they put out four, and explained the pieces were a little bit smaller than normal, so they added an extra piece to make sure that they were being fair to me. I love that sort of communication, because it explains why there were four pieces so that I won't have strange expectations the next time I go.
They also talked about how they really want to listen to their customers and provide what people want, and that they need to make it on one customer at a time. I should add that this business had been david's father. He and his brother took it over and redecorated the place. They also have a lot of beers on tap and a full menu. I am adding the current one because other reviews still show the old one.
OK let's get to the fish and chips. They use fresh cod. The fish was crispy, the fries were crispy, both without being overladen with grease. Not easy to do. They provided, in the to go containers, malt vinegar, and a very fresh tasting tartar sauce. It was clearly homemade, with a lot of dill, and what tasted like tarragon in the background. I couldn't see any fresh tarragon, so I'm guessing they may have use some tarragon vinegar in it.
With all that going right for it, why only four stars? We all thought the coleslaw had too much mayonnaise in it. That may just be our taste, and maybe most of their customers like a very mayonnaisy slaw. Just be aware. Simultaneously, the coleslaw was in a different container -along with a lemon wedge--so that it wouldn't make anything soggy. These folks really want to ensure that when you get the fish and chips home, it's as close to being fresh as possible. Nice craftsmanship!
