It was nice and not large. With the decor and name I would have expected some 60/70s car hop music or some upbeat background music. But the special sauce and chicken strips were really good. Love the crisp and flavor. Hubby had the smash burger and my son had the Nashville hot chicken sandwich (he said it was really hot but really good), absolutely loved the fries the way they are done.

It was just a few blocks from the hotel, so I walked down and had a grilled chicken salad. It was quite possibly the most flavorful grilled chicken I've ever had. The pickled green tomatoes were something I never had, but it added a nice flavor to the salad as well. The service was quick and friendly, making for a terrific first time experience at Boxcar Betty's.

I love taking my out of town friends to eat here! Its got such a great one-of-a-kind of place that has the best friends chicken! Small menu with large flavor! Our server Tiye was so friendly and made my friends have a fantastic experience at this establishment. Thank you!

This place is great! It has friendly people and tasty food. While they are known for their chicken, I believe they serve the best smash burger in town. The edges are perfectly crispy and very delicious! Their fried pickles are also amazing; they use quality pickles and fry them to crispy perfection! The double smash burger meal costs about $14, which is just a few dollars more than fast food but offers much better quality. It’s always a good choice!

Our accountant has constantly been on us to try the macaroons. Gotta hand it to him... they were surprisingly good. Thanks Ted. This place still has the best chicken sandwich in the game too.

Had some time before an appointment and was hungry. Googled nearest fast food expecting the norm and this gem popped up. Small place, almost drove past it. It was Sunday thought it would be slow but I guess the secret is out. Wait wasn't too longfor a table but the food took a bit. Don't expect it right away. Home made burgers and fries were awesome. Hubs had the grilled chicken.. guessing that was what we waited for. He said it was great as well. Staff was very friendly, clean place. Indoor and outdoor seating. Or you can order to go. I think you can call in for your order as well. We'll def go back when we're in West Ashley in that area again. Only reason for a4 for atmosphere is bc it was just a basic place. Nothing fancy but clean.

Chicken was excellent, tasty and very tender; much like an upscale Chic-fil-a but not near as clean! The day I was here, I dined with a GIANT ROACH enjoying his meal near the drink/table area...and before anyone says, its just a Palmetto bug...even for a Palmetto bug, it was the healthiest and most overweight roach I have ever seen in my life. This may be due to the tasty eats found sticking to the bottoms of my shoes and unknown rubber cement substance on the floor! My newfound friend, Jerry-P-Roachster, had a window seat in clear view of the restaurant patrons. As we ate, Jerry and I soon found ourselves reminiscing about the good old days, where the best sweet tea could be found and how much we both enjoyed people watching! He confessed to me, while we were enjoying our meal together, that he too loved the chicken sandwiches but the sweet potato fries were his favorite! Employees? While waiting for me to place my order, the cashier was also found to be busy snacking on what I can only imagine was leftover chicken under her 9 inch nails. She greeted me with an attitude of inconvenience and was stand-off-ish, and appeared to be annoyed with my minimal questions about the menu. Who knows, maybe I was just disturbing her lunch located deep beneath the layer of skin-nails she had been chomping on prior to entering my order. Overall... 9 out of 10, would not recommend again!

They didn't have the sandwich I had before. First of all. It takes alot to surprise me. And being a 12 generation Charleston local. There is some fine food here. And I've seen good and great come and go. Anyway. The sweet potatoes fries. Are to die for. .... from may places on this planet I have been to. I have never had as good.... You have to have them if you are within 100 miles. And the sandwich was a top 5. Chicken sandwich also. I've never said thanks to a restaurant. But thanks for the surprise.

Visited on October 24th. The food was good. Fried pickles were on point. Sandwhich was as delicious and fresh. The fries were tasty and a good amount and the sweet tea was refreshing. The place is nothing to rave about. Simple and clean. The service was great. The young server noticed we were there for the first time and offered suggestions with a smile. This is similar to a Bruxie (West Coast) without the waffle on every samdwhich. We will be back again if we're ever back in the area.

The chicken was delicious and the fries were hot and fresh. I had no food complaints at all. This is a good meal and a chill atmosphere. The server was funny and friendly. We will be back!

Wow what can I say Boxcar Betty's Fried Chicken Sandwich is Awesome!! The Staff here are very knowledgeable and helpful! This location was the first and it is always clean and a great friendly vibe! Oh if you love Pimento Cheese I recommend you get the Boxcar Sandwich, the peach coleslaw compliments the pimento cheese to make a fantastic chicken sandwich!! Now if you are a Buffalo Chicken sandwich lover get the Buffalo you cannot go wrong! By the way these chicken breasts are huge and delicious plus they are cage free, local sourced and antibiotic free!! This is the best gourmet Fried Chicken Sandwich in town!!!!! Easy 5 Stars !!

A staple chicken sandwich/tenders joint in Charleston, boxcar has not let me leave the building unsatisfied. The sandwich, fried or grilled is consistently tender and full of flavor. Whether you're going for the classic sando with pimento cheese or something else like beer cheese you're sure to be happy. This being a strong statement as I'm typically underwhelmed by pimento cheese. French fries are a hand cut, divey straight cut fries to order. The service is typically quick unless you're going during a lunch/dinner rush. It's a popular spot but the staff does their best not to make you feel rushed. They're a well oiled machine back in the kitchen. The ambience is what you expect. Soft to moderately loud solo eaters, friends, or families fill the seats so don't expect a candlelit dinner. We're here to do one thing and one thing only: Have a cluckin' good time.

An entry into my list of places that are not for vegetarians, but have made an effort, this place offers sandwiches with a portobello mushroom cap fried and stuffed with pimento cheese. Not exactly health food, but an interesting and distinctively southern experiment. For people that don't do dairy, not much for you here. I got my sandwich Buffalo style. This turned out not to be the greatest decision, as pimento cheese and Buffalo sauce flavors clash. The mushroom cap itself was quite indulgent, but at least I got in some fiber. Their combo option includes a small order of fries; sometimes small means barely enough to notice, but here small is plenty for one person. It also includes a drink, and wanting to avoid any further indulgences I was happy for the option of unsweetened tea. They offer the option to customize a sandwich, and I bet I could find a better flavor combination for my tastes than their preset options. So my conclusion is that this was an interesting fast food place, worth a shot for someone who's thinking about it.

Really enjoyed all that I tried! I had an excellent smash burger. We shared the fried pickles/ranch, sweet potato fries and regular fries. Enjoyed them all!

My wife took me to Boxcar Betty's today for the first time. The food was delicious and the service was great! I had The Boxcar Chicken Sandwich. That comes with a large piece of fried chicken, pimiento cheese, peach slaw, house pickle, and spicy Mayo. I also had fries with that. The fries were golden brown, crispy, and salty. I would definitely have that meal a second time. Whenever you're in Charleston, SC... Please check out Boxcar Bettys. It's a cozy, clean, and casual place. It's a beautiful atmosphere for family dining. I would recommend this place!

We did a lot of fine dining in Charleston but best meal we had was at Boxcar Betty's. Service fine and atmosphere ok but the sandwich and fries were the start of the show.

Very delicious crispy chicken sandwich. Think Chik-fil-a but different, better in some ways. Both the sweet potato fries and regular fries were yummy too. We would, we will return!

They don't have a lot of choices on the menu. But when the food tastes this good you don't need a lot of choices. Excellent experience start to finish. You would not expect it to get much business. But it was packed. And now I know why.

We've had boxcar Betty's on our list for months + never got around to visiting (we're out on Johns Island). When Yelp published BB on their top 100, we knew It was time! The chicken sandwich's live up to every single hype! So juicy and delicious. I loved adding the peach coleslaw onto mine, and the pickles were just so good. Excited to return and try more things!

This place is a couple steps up from fast food. They use fresh ingredients and your meal is made to order. I built my own sandwich for lunch today. The house made pickles were fresh and had a great crunch. The chicken patty was well seasoned and moist. The fries had a peppery savory flavor without being too salty. Great meal!

This is my first time in Charleston and I decided to try this place on a Tuesday at around noon. Parking was easy and it was not crowded. I got the boxcar sandwich with grilled chicken. The chicken was so tender and flavorful, the bun was soft and the pimento cheese/pickles really made it perfect. The sweet potato fries were a little sweet for my taste but still very good. If I went back I would probably get the regular fries or the fried green tomatoes as a side. This sandwich was honestly one of the best chicken sandwiches I have ever eaten and I think I could eat it for lunch every day I am here!

Boxcar Betty's is a cute little restaurant. It's not big or fancy. The parking lot is small so you have to arrive early if you want a parking space. The dining area is also relatively small. But what makes Boxcar Betty's special is their amazing chicken sandwiches. This is hands down the biggest and best chicken sandwich I've ever had. I had the Boxcar chicken sandwich. It is fried chicken , pimento cheese, peach coleslaw, pickles with spicy mayo. Amazing!! I had this with a side of fried pickles. The pickles were crispy with lots of flavor. Our service was good and everyone was very friendly. The vibe is casual and laid back. I will definitely be back again. The food was very good and the prices were reasonable. Good food and good value and Boxcar Betty's.

This place may quite possibly be one of the best chicken sandwiches I've ever had! We had thankfully turned to yelp to help us find somewhere to eat after getting to town, and one of the posts online says it's a better chicken sandwich than Chick-fil-A so obviously we had to try. The place is small and you order and pay at the counter and then sit and wait. The chicken it was super moist and had one of the best crunches after biting in. It was accompanied by a delicious bacon jam. My friend got the burger, and it was also well cooked. The staff here as super friendly and funny and makes you feel like home. We ended up getting the sweet potato fries which were different than I expected but we're still pretty good. If you are in the area, this is one place you should know about!

We went to Boxcar Betty's because they had made the Yelp's Top 100 restaurants in the US. We placed a to-go order and only had to wait about 10 minutes for our food. The not-so-waffle was absolutely amazing! The bacon jam, pimento cheese, combo was excellent. The young lady who worked the counter was very friendly and informative. She warned me that the maple syrup might be too sweet, but I thought it was excellent. When we come back, I might order a cheeseburger just to be able to try other items on the menu. My husband had the nuggets and said they were solid. The blue cheese dip with the nuggets was also good. The environment inside is pretty casual. Definitely not an intimate or upscale place. It is absolutely perfect for chowing down on a chicken sandwich or burger. Give it a try!

I recently dined at Boxcar Betty's and was blown away at the quality of food and efficiency of service. Hot, fresh, and well-seasoned food. I definitely recommend ordering online for pick up as the wait for our online order was almost an hour. It's a small location with indoor seating for dining-in if you choose. We ordered the classic smash burgers with fries. My boyfriend ordered his without relish or sauce, but both burgers had it so he had to scrape it off. Otherwise, they were tasty. We also ordered a side of fried pickles and fried green tomatoes. If you don't want fries they're a good substitute since it's a single person portion, but if you're looking to share I'd suggest getting fries as well. I also ordered a red velvet and fruity pebble macaron, and although the red velvet wasn't anything special, I really enjoyed the fruity pebble. They're a little expensive for a single macaron though, the only downside. I did want to try the Tex Mex salad but it wasn't an option to order online. Our friend got the Chicken "not so waffle" sandwich and he really liked the bacon jam that came on it.

This is my favorite new place for lunch. The service is fast and the food is delicious and fresh every time I've visited. There is limited seating, but I've never had a problem finding a place to sit.

Boxcar Betty's - Mt Pleasant location- offers high-end fried chicken sandwiches and service with a smile! The nicely crafted chicken sandwiches use quality and locally sourced ingredients. I always opt for the "BOXCAR" chicken sandwich which includes pimento cheese, peach slaw, house pickles and spicy mayo. There are toppings galore including cheddar, Swiss, Kentucky beer cheese, green tomatoes, to name a few. Today I ordered the BB Salad~ topped with fried chicken which were diced into small cubes and blended in just great with a Spring Mix Salad. Fresh greens, pickled green tomatoes, candied pecans and honey mustard (my choice of dressing) made today's lunch quite satisfying. The hand cut fries are cooked to order and always freshly done so you'll have to wait a minute--- and the hand cut sweet potato fries are sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon and are a tasty twist to conventional fries if you're wanting to add a sweet touch to your meal. Macarons for dessert??? What??? They are available in several flavors!!! Too fun!!!

I was weened on Boxcar Betty's in Mount Pleasant. That location is clean, updated and bright. Their food served was perfect! But this location is so run down and questionable. It's really dingy and the sandwiches were so messy, I had to ask for utensils and handfuls of napkins. The bottom bun was so soaked, my fingers penetrated into the chicken. Such a difference experience. Boxcar Betty's could be a goldmine. Why they don't upgrade is a mystery. The lady greeting us was very nice and very helpful.

I eat here about every 2-3 months. The overall quality has declined in recent visits. The chicken breast was previously about 6 oz, now it's 4 oz or less. The place is possibly the most dirty/disgusting restaurant in the area. It needs to close for a week, and get a massive renovation inside. Fast food restaurants are cleaner inside. Hoping that my most recent 2 trips weren't indicative of future decline.

Dirty, dark and dank inside. While the customer service was polite and kind, the food was beyond greasy and such low quality. I don't feel like I trust Yelp reviews anymore if this place gets rated almost 5 stars!

We enjoy diet splurges every once in a while and take a trip to Boxcars. The chicken sandwiches are so fresh and crispy and fries are great. I always do the create your own sandwich which you can choose from different types of chicken and add your own toppings. My husband always gets the Boxcar and loves it, although a little messy. We had great service with a smile and the dining room is clean. We, of course, are coming back soon

Ordered chicken sandwich and two grilled. Fried tomatoes and sweet potato fries. Fried chicken was large and juicy Positives: easy to order. Sort of cozy. Negatives: chicken w pimento was messiest sandwich I have ever eaten. Also it was had an odd flavor with the sauce. Fried tomatoes were vinegary. Like they had been soaked. Grilled sandwiches were tasteless as well as the fries. Wouldn't go back myself but apparently a lot of people like it.

The food here is still decent but the atmosphere and service are a FAR cry from when those two guys first opened it years ago. It was so friendly and welcoming. Came in for lunch today, hardly anyone here. Kitchen staff was doubling as the front counter service taking orders and clearly would have wanted to be doing anything else but that. The walls are filthy and scuffed up, floor were dirty and just felt like another crappy forgotten restaurant. Hope the owners will step in and see what's going on here.

Food was good, not amazing. Service was pleasant, but I thought it was a little bit pricey, considering the no frills grassroots feel it portrays. I paid something like 17 bucks for a chicken sandwich combo which included fries and a drink. Even by today's inflated standards, that seems a little too pricey for me to return.

Love this place! The maple bacon jam with palmetto cheese I dream of! I always love getting their sweet potato fries too.

Boxcar Betty's is always fantastic! Its such a, "please everyone" place. I had a sandwich with bacon jam, maple syrup, & pimiento cheese. It was UNREAL. The vibe is so awesome here, as it truly is a local spot. We love visiting, as the food and service never disappoints. Everything here is compostable, which is also a HUGE plus. We are so thankful they are in West Ashley!

Ok um WOW. I always heard people say this place was good but good is an UNDERSTATEMENT. This was the best fried chicken sandwich I've ever had. I was not expecting a piece of fried chicken to be that juicy or huge! And the pickles, slaw, and spicy mayo all complimented the chicken like a perfect symphony of flavors. This sandwich was just on another level. I ordered the Boxcar with fried chicken as my protein and oh my gosh it was so amazing. The fried pickles and sweet potato fries were also good but I had to take them both to go because I was way too full after just the sandwich. The staff was nice and the food came out in 10-15 minutes. There's a good amount of indoor seating and 2 tables for 2 outside in the covered area. Overall, amazing food. GET A FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH HERE.

Amazing chicken and fried pickles every. Single. Time. Definitely plan on taking a nap afterwards. I'm not sure how the chicken is so good, but it is. Never dry, always full of flavor, and not just because of the toppings. There's just a specific flavor here that I can't find anywhere else. It makes me experiment with chicken when cooking just to see what's possible. If you think chicken sandwiches are just ok, try this place. It'll make you want to try chicken sandwiches everywhere else just to see if anyone can do it as well as they do. Or at least that was my experience, and I'm here for it.

These are the best chicken sandwiches ever! The bacon jam is scrumptious. The only tricky thing is the parking lot is a bit small. But that pales in comparison to how good this place is. Great staff, amazing food, and a cool little spot to get a chicken sandwich.

Easy online ordering. Starving on my monthly-spend-too-much-at-Target run. Ordered from the target parking lot and food was ready by the time I pulled in. Mushroom cap available for chicken substitute. In addition to being vegetarian (for the time being), I also inconveniently dislike mushrooms (chronic hatred). I ended up getting seasoned fries and fried green tomatoes to max out my weekly salt intake. Fries: get ready for Rally's/Checker's/Five Guys deliciousness. Fries Green Tomatoes: omg. Amazing flavor. Excellent crisp. Perfection.

Stopped in for a to-go order. Did not have to wait long and the Fried Chicken Boxcar Sandwich was unique with a lot of flavors that worked really well together. Got chicken fingers for the kids and they were good as well.

Disappointing! I was super excited to try their chicken. It's not good. At all. Save yourself the trip and the money and go to Wendy's, KFC, or Popeyes instead. The nuggets are tiny popcorn chicken and not good. The chicken tastes like old grease. They must pound the chicken breast real thin because both of our sandwiches were super thin fried chicken. Super bummed because I love good chicken sandwiches. I've had better at gas stations.

Don't tell my mother but this chicken is slap yo mama gooodddddd. It's perfectly breaded juicy! Whatever you order, be sure to ad bacon jam. You will not be disappointed and it levels up anything in the menu. We visited on a busy Saturday, and while it did not take long to order, finding and seat and getting our food did take awhile. I'd guess they have around a dozen or so tables, so if they're busy and you're on a time restraint might be best to visit another time. Thankfully we had time and got to enjoy the grey grub. Establishment has an eclectic feel to it, yet modern.

Food is spot on everytime I go with co-workers and would recommend it to my customers considering I work at one of the dealerships down the street. Anytime someone asks about local food spots I always recommend this place. 10/10. Just wish they were opened on sunday

Chicken sandwich's are excessively delicious. Sides like fried pickles or fries taste great. Wait time usually nothing, price is fair and good is great--what more could you ask for?

If you love a great chicken sandwich Boxcar Betty's needs to be on your list. We had the boxcar that is there standard sandwich with slaw dressing and pickles. Hand cut Frys are available and are delicious. A must try!!!
