Note: Examine and test drive your bike before you rent!!! See below:
My husband and I visited Peaks Island last week on vacation. This bike shop was recommended to us by some family members, as bikes were a must for exploring the island. The man who rented us the bikes (Brad, I presume), was friendly and warned us that it would take approximately 45 minutes to bike the perimeter. My husband and I each rented a bike for $10 each for 2 hours. As this was the first time ever renting a bike, I'm not sure the going-rate. However, the $1 fee for a map to get around seemed absurd!
There were a slew of bikes left out for you to choose from, along with a good selection of bike helmets (should you choose to wear one). As I didn't want to wear my purse, I chose a bike with a basket, and off we went. My bike was a "cruiser" with handles that sat far from the seat, and it was very awkward for me to maneuver. It had both hand breaks and back pedal breaks, which was confusing. I managed with the bike throughout most of our exploration, until I wiped out at the end. Going up a fairly decent hill, I was gripping the handle bars tight to keep my upward momentum. Before I knew it the handle bar grip came off and I fell off my bike - thank goodness I chose to wear a helmet!
Upon return to the bike shop, my husband checked the bikes back in as I tended to my bloody, scraped leg. A week later, I still have the scrape and a few nasty bruises.
