"In 15 minutes, the ferry from Portland to Peaks Island takes you from a buzzing small town to a quiet island where the main draws are cycling or walking the 4-mile circumference or swimming at Sandy beach. Bike rental is through Brad’s Bike Rental & Repair." - Sophie Friedman

Great guys and great service! I returned the bike at 5:59, but there were nobody there. I picked up the bike and put it on the other side of the fence. I had a great time shooting a video for my yt channel. Thanks you, guys! Highly recommended place

Google
It's about 3 mins walk from the Pier. It's definitely worth renting it from Brad's. It's an honor system and super easy to rent. 2 bucks single seat bicycle for 2 hours. Going on a bicycle, you can enjoy the view of the eastern side of the island. You can bike the whole island within an hour. Highly recommend renting from Brad's. Thx

Google
Omg what a memorable experience! Highly recommend! We loved exploring Peak's Island this way! Even though staff was not present, we could still rent bikes on the honor-system. It was easy, cheap, contact-less and overall a cool experience. Gave the island even more charm! Its only a few minute walk from the ferry (Pro Tip: Walk fast! As soon as you are off the ferry you will see people walking that way to rent. It's first come-first serve. Definitely a lot of bikes but we were lucky to get ones that were the right size and with baskets!)

Amanda MacKinnon

Google
Just want to add some clarification since there is no website and the last review had an important inaccuracy. It is 3 minute walk from the ferry (to the left). BUT it is not "2 bucks," to rent a bike. It's $20 and there are friendly workers there to help.

Cassandra Macias (Cass)

Google
Easy rental and worth it! We got our bikes and helmets self serve and biked the whole island. So much fun! Bikes were reliable and luckily had good brakes for the downhill coasting. Definitely recommend!

It's amazing that there's still places like this in the world we live in today. I was just in Portland for work. I had heard about a bike rental place on Peaks Island from someone on the plane. It was pretty neat to take the ferry over and see Portland from a different perspective. I learned that there are 364 islands in this area. It was great to be able to explore this one. I never met anyone at the bike shop as it was off season and there was a box to deposit the $10 per hour rental rate in cash. I had pictured in my mind nicer bikes. But I heard later from somebody local to the region that the owner recycles bikes and leaves them out for people to rent. These were like Walmart type bikes but for the 1 hour that I had it it was sufficient for what it was. Recommend you get to the front of the line coming off the ferry so that you get an adult size bike. Mine was more teenager size :-)

Brianna Meagher

Google
Highly recommend this bike rental shop! We went over on the 9:15am ferry and he had plenty of bikes available. Some w/ baskets and some w/out. Helmets included. The 2-3 hour rental was plenty of time to see the whole island (with stops along the way). Lisa's cafe was a great bfast stop too!

Nick Kottelenberg

Google
Great selection, good price and friendly staff. When you get off the ferry go to the top of the hill, turn left and its on your right ..maybe a 5 minute walk.

Jessica B.

Yelp
Disembark from the ferry and take a left, 3 minutes walk to the bike rental (pass Baba's café along the way). Reasonable fee to rent 2 adult bikes (helmets included) of about $60 for 4 hours. The island was hillier than I anticipated, so it was quite a workout. We enjoyed biking around the island, looking at the super cute houses and catching ocean views.

Yelp
This probably could be a one (or two) paragraph review if things were set up how Brad's Bike Rental & Repair apparently used to be like. Though I'm gonna give it the ol' Yelpish try to put a little more into my write up (which really doesn't take much for me...heh heh). My fiancée and I visited Peaks Island and Brad's Bike Rental back in early July when we were looking for a little outdoor activity that didn't involve eating or drinking (a common theme in the Portland area). Now if you're wondering about the comment of "used to be like", any older pre-Covid reviews seem to mention an honor system setup in which you basically drop off some money, grab a bike, and it's on you to be a moral human being and return it. That's all fine and dandy, but I suppose something caused a flip of the business model because when we showed up, things were a bit different. I mean it might've been cool to just grab a bike, throw some money in a slot, and go, but honestly I liked the fact that we spoke to someone (Brad?) prior to heading out. Right before our interaction, we had to decide how long we wanted our bikes for. Rates go by hour though honestly one 60 minute session isn't enough time to truly see all of Peaks. You're better off spending $20 for the 2-3 hour slot which gives you plenty of time to check out all of the sensational sights. Once we decided on doing that, the aforementioned employee (was it Brad? I don't know!) gave us a map of Peaks Island with a little rundown of great places to stop along the way. Bike choices were also aplenty and he and his helper kept putting out more which was definitely a positive. They also offered to assist with seat heights if needed. My fiancée wanted a bike with a basket in the front for her bag and there were several to choose from with this feature. After grabbing our cycles, we were on our way to explore and really enjoy the sights of Peaks Island and Casco Bay. Overall, Brad's Bike Rental & Repair is a worthy (almost necessary) stop when visiting Peaks Island. If you don't have your own set of wheels then you're in for quite a walk. Brad's will hook you up at a reasonable price with great choices of decent bikes to set you off on your exploration. And with that, five paragraphs later, you now know the info.

Yelp
Quick and easy to rent a bike and tour the island. Large selection and a short walk from the ferry.

Emily N.

Yelp
Get there early if you need something special. We got there soon after opening and were able to get one of the trailers to pull our two year old. Super friendly, helpful in finding the bike that fits. Bikes worked great.

Kara S.

Yelp
For my first trip to Peak's Island I kept hemming and hawing over whether to walk, rent a golf cart or rent bikes. My wife and I are in are early 50's and we kept coming back to "golf cart", until we arrived on the island. I realized I screwed up by not reserving a golf cart ahead of our trip. You must reserve at least one day ahead or take your chances that someone didn't show up for their reservation. Anyway, we decided to walk on up to the highly rated Brad's bikes. It's $20 for 2 hours for 1 bike BUT, I noticed that Brad had a few electric bikes too, only $10 more per bike and I jumped on it. I've been wanting to try one for a while and this was such a great trip to take one for a ride. The island has some hills and the e-bike was so easy to use and we had so much fun with them. We zipped around the island in record time yet still had time to stop every now and then to take some photos (sadly none of which were us, on the bikes). Brad is a doll as is his assistant. Go there, rent bikes, have fun.

Amaury J.

Yelp
The best way to see Peaks Island is on a bike, and Brad's Bike Rental makes it easy, and affordable, for people to get one. We arrived on a packed day at Peaks Island and were able to get two really good bikes. They keep the bikes outside and you can actually try them out and pick your favorite, since they are all different styles/heights/etc. I do have to say, not all the bikes were in perfect condition, so make sure you try them out before renting them. We got lucky with ours. As of 2020, they were charging $10 for one hour or $20 for three hours, and they also had tandem bikes. The gentleman working here (not sure if that's Brad?) was kind and laid back. We signed a waiver for the bikes and were good to go. Brad's Bike Rental is definitely a no frills kind of place, and we loved it. Thanks to them, we were able to explore and enjoy the whole island in two hours.

Carrie P.

Yelp
Super easy set up for someone wanting to rent a bike and enjoy the island. Within a minutes walk of the ferry dock you can find Brad's Bike Rental- easy to spot by the line of bikes on the road. From there, take a moment to sign your name, and select one of several used bikes of various makes and models. Pay when you return the bikes. We appreciated the information from the salesperson who suggested areas on the island to explore. Easy return and fair price made this a win for our day on Pike's Island.

Violet W.

Yelp
A friend and I went to Peak's Island for the day and rented bikes from Brad's. We were able to bike all over the island and it made our trip completely worth it!!! There was a person working there who was so accommodating and kind to us and gave us a cloth to wipe bike grease off our hands. 10/10 experience and would rent from them again!

Yong K.

Yelp
This place was run by the honor system. Did not see a single worker haha. We went and borrowed 2 bikes ($10/hour for each bike) Make sure you try out your bike on the block and take a helmet too You can easily do a lap around the island in an hour with some breaks too but if you really want to relax and take longer breaks, you can rent for 2 hours.

Anna W.

Yelp
There's no better way to see the island! Arrived on a slow day so I had my choice of the Frankenbikes (they've done such a great job of piecing together a variety of bikes). They guys working the garage were very helpful! As I was pulling away they told me about rain moving in and offered to refund as they were going to close early. I really still wanted to ride so they let me just go and return it to the yard whenever I was done! I'd brought some snacks and pastry's from Portland as well as a book. A GREAT midway island stop for lunch and some readin is the Whaleback Rock.

Hana C.

Yelp
Awesome! Such an easy way to explore the island and we didn't have any issues with the bikes themselves. A beautiful trip and cannot beat the prices (we did $10 for an hour and it was perfect!). Definitely recommend and grateful for this little shop right off the ferry.

Rachel D.

Yelp
First time at Peaks and we decided to get bikes with some out of town friends. Best decision ever. I have not ridden a bike in 10 years and now all I can think about is buying one. Even if I bought one I would likely still use Brad & Wyatt's for my island biking needs. Both staff members were friendly. I went to go for a bike I liked and the nice woman at the shop said it was reserved but apolgized. She could have walked away but instead she found me a better bike and adjusted it to my hight. My friends and I spent two hours exploring and having a great time with their advice on where to venture. If youre on Peaks for the first time this beats spending the time eating out or walking or scooting around on a golf cart. Walk up the hill from the ferry and make the first left. The shop is on your right hand side down the street a ways and can't be missed.

Susan N.

Yelp
Our trip to Portland included a spur of the moment ferry ride to Peaks Island. We followed the crowd off of the ferry and dropped into Brad's bike shop to rent two bikes to better explore the island. Since it was off-season, we were able to get our pick of bikes. The service was prompt, and the bikes ran about 10 bucks an hour to rent. They included a map that showed us how to see the island. The couple who was running it the day we were there we lovely and helpful in answering our questions. We really enjoyed our bike ride, and preferred seeing the views that way versus using a golf cart.

Bob S.

Yelp
Definitely a great way to see Peaks island is by bike. The ride around the island is relatively flat. Brad's place had plenty of bikes to choose from. The two bikes we used were in good condition and even had handle bar baskets. I had a Trek and my wife had a Giant. i would recommend Brad's to anyone visiting Peaks island ... (as long as they are physically fit enough to ride a bike.)

Abigail H.

Yelp
Somewhere between 2.5 and 3. Unfortunately, my husband and I got overcharged last week. We originally checked that we would do 3 hours each, for a total of $40. The bikes were more difficult to use and worn than we anticipated (do NOT take a cruiser around the island, it's extremely difficult) so we returned them after only 40 minutes, and left a note in the same check out box explaining. Instead of being charged for the 1 hr, still got charged for 3. If you trust people not to take your bikes for free, trust them when they say how long they rented. Disappointed that there was no one to assist. Nice idea, bad implementation.

Marie P.

Yelp
Brad took the time to find the right bikes for my husband and I, an extra large and a petite frame. He really cares that you have a great experience on Peak's Island. I'm not sure why anyone would bother to bring their own bike to the island when you have this type of customer service.

Mark S.

Yelp
Great guys. Your choice of bikes. They work marvelously! Such a beautiful island and easy to navigate brads map!

Chelsea K.

Yelp
First off, the guy who works here is wonderful. I wish I'd gotten his name, maybe it was Brad (although I feel like the name of this place has changed so it may be new ownership). They have TONS of bike options, super low key and wicked friendly. It takes about an hour to leisurely ride the entirely island with a few small viewing stops. When you're deciding on your rental times, take that into consideration. We arrived late and while picking through the bike options, the guy working came out to close up, but he let us rent anyway. I would recommend this stop and this island to anyone coming to Portland for a visit. What a fantastic day.

Jonica S.

Yelp
Rental process was super quick and easy, shop owner was very friendly! For 10 bucks a person we were able to ride around the whole island and stop for a few breaks and photo ops, we had a great time!! Would definitely come back again in the future!

Emma B.

Yelp
This is one of the only bike rental places I saw on the island, and I think that helps their business. The guy working the shop was not friendly, seemed more interested in chatting with his friend than helping customers. I asked him if he could point out the smaller frame bikes for me and he basically just told me look for myself while he took our money. The bikes were not in great shape either. Every time my dad or I switched gears or speeds it sound like our bikes were about to fall apart. Honestly, if you can find another place on the island, go there.

Dan B.

Yelp
I rented two bikes for wife and I and two kid trailers for my twin 6 year olds. The bikes were old and in bad shape. My bike chain kept coming off and my brakes didn't work very well. If it were just me I wouldn't care that much, but when it endangered my boys I feel upset by the matter. When I brought the issues to their attention they told me to jump of the pier. Not the nicest people but I guess the have a captive audience .

Scott M.

Yelp
Stopped by this morning with the family which include 21 month old twins (who have never been on a bike). Very, very friendly guy helped us decide between bikes with kid seats on the back (regular rental fee), or the "kid cart" trailer type thing (costs as much as another single bike). Went with the mounted kid seats (less fighting, better views)and had a great time. We brought helmets for our kids but I would guess they have some for little kids. The kids even eventually stopped crying and by the end of the day were sleeping in the seats! SUCCESS! Are the bikes brand new. NO, did they work, absolutely and the rates are more than reasonable. So parents with young kids...when we got there at 1030am they had been open for a little while, and had 4 bikes w/ mounted seats and three trailers. The trailers were still there when we returned the bikes. Just want you all to know there ARE options.

Abby J.

Yelp
Rented bikes and really enjoyed the ride. Staff was nice and helpful and friendly. Bikes were kinda old but who cares they worked and it was fun.

Bailey R.

Yelp
We were on Peak's Island for our honeymoon and had gotten our personal bikes stolen in Portland. They took a stressful situation, and made our honeymoon even more special. Thank you Brad & Wyatt!! Highly recommend, would return!

Heather R.

Yelp
What a great little place with tons of bikes! We visit Peaks Island whenever we are lucky enough to escape the Arizona summer and stay with our wonderful family in Portland! We have rented bikes here several times and it has always been a great experience! It's a beautiful place to ride and a bike from Brad's is the best way to see the island! Thanks guys! We Love Maine!

Hk B.

Yelp
The staff was friendly and helpful, and the bikes were good enough to get the job done. I was certain that they would run out of bikes by the time we got to the head of the line, but they just kept bringing bikes out from somewhere inside and parking them at the curb. We quickly found bikes and helmets to suit us all, and away we went! We enjoyed biking around the island and would definitely recommend Brad's to our friends and family.

Amy Z.

Yelp
Note: Examine and test drive your bike before you rent!!! See below: My husband and I visited Peaks Island last week on vacation. This bike shop was recommended to us by some family members, as bikes were a must for exploring the island. The man who rented us the bikes (Brad, I presume), was friendly and warned us that it would take approximately 45 minutes to bike the perimeter. My husband and I each rented a bike for $10 each for 2 hours. As this was the first time ever renting a bike, I'm not sure the going-rate. However, the $1 fee for a map to get around seemed absurd! There were a slew of bikes left out for you to choose from, along with a good selection of bike helmets (should you choose to wear one). As I didn't want to wear my purse, I chose a bike with a basket, and off we went. My bike was a "cruiser" with handles that sat far from the seat, and it was very awkward for me to maneuver. It had both hand breaks and back pedal breaks, which was confusing. I managed with the bike throughout most of our exploration, until I wiped out at the end. Going up a fairly decent hill, I was gripping the handle bars tight to keep my upward momentum. Before I knew it the handle bar grip came off and I fell off my bike - thank goodness I chose to wear a helmet! Upon return to the bike shop, my husband checked the bikes back in as I tended to my bloody, scraped leg. A week later, I still have the scrape and a few nasty bruises.

Scott S.

Yelp
If you're renting a bike on Peaks Island, this is the place to go. It cost $9 for 3 hours. Being ignorant of bike rental prices, I thought this was a good price at $3/hour -- especially considering the $5/hour rate if you don't sign up for 3 hours. Brad gave us a map of the island and a recommendation for a route to take and we enjoyed -- except the sunburned upper bodies, of course. (Wear sunscreen.) As we were riding off, Brad told us to "take care of my bikes." :) The bikes and helmets are a bit ratty compared to the fancy ones we saw for sale at LL Bean the day before, but it's hard to complain -- we really didn't need anything better (or more expensive). If you're thinking about taking your own bike over, consider that the ferry charges $6 for bikes -- so it may be worth renting from Brad to save the schlep. Even though there's no other choice on the island, we did well at Brad's.

Sharon Z.

Yelp
This place is just down the street from where we got off the Ferry to Peak's Island (about a less than 5 minute walk). We had about 2 hours on the island and wanted to rent a tandem bike ($25 for 2 hours). Brad was very nice and helpful, he helped us find the appropriate bike, helmets and adjust the size. Tandem bikes can also be rented with small kids in t he back. He let us take the tandem bike for a spin (first time for both of us) before we committed to it. He gave us advice about the terrain, sights and handed us a map. It takes about 25 minutes to get around the island if you make no stops to sight see. But please do! The beach shore is just gorgeous, the waves crushing against the rocks, makes a great rock climb too. The bikes can really be parked anywhere (everyone does) and no worries about it being stolen. The tandem bike is really a lot of fun (at least for the copilot) and great way of exploring the island.

Adam W.

Yelp
Went there today and grabed a few bikes to ride around the island. We knew they wouldnt be the Specialized and Lightspeed road bikes that my wife and I are used to, but all we wanted was something to pedal. Yes, it is true that they will just tell you to pick from what they have. It was about 10:30am on a beautiful Sunday July 24th day and they probably had 50 left to choose from. We grabbed two that worked just fine for what they were needed for. They ran us $20 each for 3 hours of use. We easily rode around the island 1.5 times, went to lunch (left bikes on sidewalk) and still had them back 45 min early. It took us about 3 minutes from when we showed up at the bike rental to when we were peddling away. Great experience for us that I would highly recommend.

Cindy H.

Yelp
First of all, in this day and age, I don't know of any business that leaves their goods outdoors for others to use on an 'honors system.' My husband and I went during the off season and called ahead to ensure that we would have bikes available to us. The answering system explained there were bikes out to use. When we got there we saw bikes, helmets all of it just available with rates painted on a piece of wood. Mr. Brad- thank you for doing that, we enjoyed exploring the island on your bikes! We also respected your honor system and paid (although you should reconsider the payment box, I think it would be easy for people to get their hands on your cash!). If you find gray gloves in a basket, will you contact me (we left them accidentally)? I will pay for the shipping. I think it says a lot about a business when owners put themselves out there and allow visitors to have access to their products with the risk of being taken advantage of!!!

Lisa S.

Yelp
Brad could not have been nicer, and I swear this is the best way to see Peak's Island. It's just a few minutes walk from the ferry to the bike shop. The round-trip around the island is just 4 miles, but it's almost entirely along the coast and there are lots of places you'll want to pull over for the most incredible views of Casco Bay and the Atlantic. We kept pulling over every few minutes, because each view was better than the next. There were barely any cars around, and a few people out walking, jogging and biking. But an easy, fun ride for sure! Brad was unbelievably helpful by giving us directions, and he told us because we were probably the last people to rent from him for the day we could keep the bikes pretty much as long as we wanted. An fantastic experience from start to finish!

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Great easy rental and super friendly staff. Lots of bike options to choose from so you can be picky on style and height. I sadly chose the wrong type so biking was not that easy as it was a cruiser and didn't handle the hills well. But live and learn, right?

Lee M.

Yelp
Great location - happy and helpful staff - but the bikes aren't all that great. My guess is the staff has to spend a ton of time just keeping them up and running... my bike chain snapped off in the middle of my ride while changing gears, smack in the furthest point on the island from the shop. Luckily I knew how to repair it, but, ugh. Biking around Peaks Island is a great experience, so I highly recommend spending a few bucks, choosing the most-recently-tuned-up bike you can find, and taking a spin!

J P.

Yelp
$15 to get a bike for 4 hours is a good deal, IMO. got off the Ferry at 10:45, was on my bike by 11. Biked around until 1230, had lunch, biked some more adn dropped them off at 2:30 to hop back on the 2:45 ferry. best way to see the island - while its only 4 miles around, it would have been a lot of walking. the bikes were fun - my friend and i had not been on bikes in probably 10 years. you really dont forget how to ride. this place definteily is trusting and operates on the honor system. i have a feeling they do pretty well. i do wish Peaks had less cars on it. definiltey not like Isle au Haut, but a great way to spend a day.

Kelly M.

Yelp
On a busy beautiful Saturday Brad and his crew were so patient and so helpful with our large group including 3 crying kids!! They set us up with the right bikes and helmets even helping us hold the bikes up while we loaded the kids! The kids had great time once we got going, the bikes worked great and the island was beautiful!!

Kathryn E.

Yelp
Wyatt was super helpful. They have a great selection of bikes, they all seemed to be in good shape. The map provided with the bikes is super helpful, and there are little signs directing you around the island. Make sure to rent a bike and take the scenic route around the island!

Whitney B.

Yelp
I wanted to review because we had an excellent experience - quick rental process, bikes worked great (you pick out your own from the ones available), many helmet choices, and we were offered a map of the island. We spent about 45 minutes biking the island and stopped several times to take photos and rest. It was a wonderful way to spend an hour or so before returning to Portland.

Steven I.

Yelp
Boy, what a guy. If you want an alternative to the golf carts, Brad has you covered. With reasonable rates for a couple hours, there is no reason why you shouldn't say hello to Brad. Some people give him bad reviews because some of the bikes don't work, but there is a slew of them to choose from, so pick whichever one suits you and get riding. He is right up the street from the landing- perfect placement.

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
The bikes we rented were in good repair. It was self service and on the honors system. We grabbed a couple bikes, dropped $20 in the slot, and had an island adventure. Lovely. I recommend it!

Brian And Fran M.

Yelp
$25 two hour tandem bike ride around the island. It wasnt a Madone but it did change gears. Thanks Wyatt!

david k.

Yelp
Brad is honest and hardworking. He is helpful and courteous as well. His son works with him and they are both capable at all levels of bike repair whether the bike is yours or theirs. Good people with a useful and helpful business on Peaks Island.

Michael D.

Yelp
Good prices and a bike for every body type (they'll adjust them for you too). Pretty much what you would expect and hope for from a bike rental. The island is pretty and very quick to ride around.

Jen W.

Yelp
The older guy, don't know if this Brad or not, was very rude and insulting. He offered no help in us adjusting our bikes or selecting our bikes at first, and then came over and snapped at us for having the seat to high etc. I'm assuming because he has no competition on the island and most people are tourists, he doesn't have to worry about customer service. Riding the bikes on the island is worth it to bring your own on the ferry.

Al M.

Yelp
Don't expect much. Bikes are all recycled crap but get the job done for an island this small. No B.S. paperwork to worry about, no releases to sign. Just pay and go. Plenty of thirdhand helmets to choose from. Kind of adds to the rustic charm of the place.

Susie P.

Yelp
I was very disappointed with my experience with Brad's Bike Rentals. My sister, her friend, and I wanted to rent bikes and ride around the island for the afternoon but I did not know if the shop would have a bike that could accommodate my 7 month old son. I called the shop before I left the mainland to check and I was told that it would not be a problem. However, when we arrived on the island and walked to Brad's shop, we were greeted very rudely and told that if I put my baby on the bike or in the baby trailer, it was very possible that he would fall out and get brain damage. I was very disappointed that we got all the way to Peak's and were then told that we couldn't ride. I would never want to put my baby in danger and I appreciate that he let me know that the baby would not be safe, but I was not impressed with the service and wrong information given over the phone.

Kelly H.

Yelp
We visited the island yesterday with out of state relatives. The staff were super friendly and helpful. There was a perfect bike for everyone in our large group - including a cart for a three year old.

Kathy P.

Yelp
We rented bikes on the off season and simply filled out a rental form and deposited it with the money in the box. Nice selection of bikes. Beautiful island. Recommended it to our friends who frequently visit Portland.

Jess F.

Yelp
Bike rental places are not always legit. This, however, is not most places. this is BRAD AND WYATT"S bike shop! They are father and son, live on the island and love bikes.......its also the only bike rental on Peaks Island :)
