Yelp
Braeswood Tex-Mex Barbecue
The Name tells you three things:
First, it's going to be Houston, homies!
Second: Tortillas, Brisket and Ribs will be spot on!
Third: You Know the chef can cook if he is representing "Hustletown!"
I came by after Mass and was not disappointed. Had the brisket and the smoked carne asada tacos, and dang! I could eat them every day. Fresh corn tortilla, nice and warm, with sauce, onions & cilantro combination, playing together with the meat, all the ingredients harmonious and not competing for your attention. Think Thelonious Monk if he played Tex-Mex in your mouth.
The brisket was juicy and just a tad fatty, with a good bark and nice feel. (You know when it can be lifted by one hand and not fall apart on you, but will melt as soon as you want it to, that the pit master knows what he is doing!)
Ribs were tasty but, my wife stole mine, so I probably have to come back for them. ( I mean I had like a piece of the bone left) :(((
The place is a small, but fun, has that BBQ in a small garage feel and that is HustleTown all day! Perfect that it seems to be a converted downtown garage, too.
The only thing that needs a bit of work would be seating. The chairs were a bit rundown outside and the front was a bit unmanageable to sit. If they can get that down, I think they are set.
It's funny that new BBQ places always get the crank reviews, from pretentious posers, ("My plane had a two hour layover in Texas so I am practically a native, SO I KNOW what Tex-Mex BBQ is!!!" Or "My auntie was from Carolina so if they don't have this on the menu, it's not legit"). You know those kind of folks? As for me, the place is bomb. In the words of Houston rap legend, "The Ghetto Boys," "Dang, it feels good to be a gangsta!" BBQ gangster, that is.
If you know, you know.
