It's been how long?!
The good news, with everything that's gone on in that time, my opinion on this restaurant has changed infinity for the better. Being tired at the same neighborhood places for lunch, I made a point for a revisit for a midweek lunch.
I remember going up the stairs from Pacific Avenue but that is now an emergency exit only. Entering from the main doors on Columbus. Arriving promptly at 11:30 am, their opening time, the waitress/cashier was at the counter and on the phone. I waited a little before she asked me where I'd like to sit, being the first customer here. I chose a two-top table to the left, across from the kitchen. I knew what I wanted from reading the sidewalk sign and ordered the lunch option #2, selecting the smoked ham with fresh cloves of garlic. The first portion of the combo includes a small bowl of hot & sour soup, cold noodles, and a fried dim sum (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=fC1tNy10MkpjG8ajKqSxdA&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q). I forgot to take a photo of the soup as I wanted to drink it while it was still hot; it had the standard ingredients as I enjoy the bamboo shoot and carrot shreds, and wood ear fungus; I enjoyed the crunch from those and the generous portion of firm tofu with a sprinkling of scallions. The cold noodles (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=35COEo-pXBhzuwsa0cyDIg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) were just okay, garnished with a few pieces of sliced cucumbers. The fried dim sum was decent and reminded me a cross between green onion pancake and fried pastry; the filling (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=OXNPLC3Lt_NDgTQfr0--Jg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) was non-descript as I couldn't figure out whether anything else was mixed with the chives. smoked ham with fresh cloves of garlic (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=FyCu1a1Qwoy4ogOX5q-YNA&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) came on a bed of white rice. I liked the assortment of ingredients which included bamboo shoots, onions, and green onions and the medium spicy as requested was perfect. The best part was, unlike Cantonese cuisine, there was no thick heavy sauce to make this meal feel rich. The portion size was also perfect as the plate was the size of banquet share plates instead of the large plate lunch variety. With the three appetizers, my stomach was satisfied and no takeout box was necessary to pack excess food.
The cashier/waitress was nice and efficient in checking my water glass and making sure everything was okay. As I dined, a couple of parties came to dine-in and a couple of guys came in to pick up takeout orders. Impressive that this looked to be a three person show with a lady at the wok, another lady who walked in shortly after I was seated, and the cashier/waitress (sorry, forgot to get her name). I look forward to returning and trying other menu items including their noodle dishes.
