38 Essential Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul

"Alex and Margo Roberts, the duo behind elegant Minneapolis restaurant, cafe, and hotel Alma, are also the names behind Brasa, one of the Cities’ finest restaurants for casual, easy dining. Drawing on southern, Creole, and Mexican culinary influences, this menu is best served family-style: Pair rotisserie chicken crispy fried catfish (made with a gluten-free rice flour breading, it’s worth noting) with an assortment of savory stewed beans, fried yuca and plantains, collard greens with smoked chicken, and spicy creamed spinach. Round out the meal with butterscotch pudding." - Eater Staff

Google
Brass has been on our list for quite awhile and we finally made our way in for the first time. I love the building and overall vibe inside, the staff is friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. We had the chilaquiles, the chicken plate and a side of Yucca fries. The fries were a bit doughy inside, but the rest of the food was delicious. Mix that in with a nice tap list along with Alma Provisions and this will be an easy repeat visit!

We enjoyed the food and beer. Chicken was cooked perfectly and out sides were very flavorful. I bit on the pricey side for the portions but worth the experience

Google
They had amazing food here. I had the Rotisserie Chicken Sandwich and it was great. Loved the bacon and the chicken salad. The atmosphere of the place was great as well. The place is also extremely convenient to get to by bike it is right along the Bryant Avenue Bike path and the 46th street bike lanes and is also pretty to get to by transit as it is just a 3 minute walk from both the Route 4 bus and the Route 46 bus

I’ve been eating at Brasa for 4 years now- and I order the SAME THING every time. Because it’s that good! I order the chilaquiles with red sauce and it is fantastic (the green sauce is good too, but I like the spice of the red). Their portions definitely used to be way bigger a few years ago, but it’s still good. I just generally need more food than this one plate now which is a bummer, but I still order the chilaquiles because it really is that good. My wife gets the chickpea curry and adds chicken to it, she loves that too. They do have an app for rewards, but no matter what location or who’s working, none of the staff seem to know how to use it or add points to it, so it’s kind of redundant to try to use it whenever I spend $40-$50 and can’t get points for it on their own app. That’s a bummer. We love their food though, so we will keep coming back. I wish someone would train their staff on how to load points onto their app though- it works for ordering via the app, but I dine in.

Google
Roasted pork bowl with yellow rice, over-easy egg, spicy creamed spinach, crispy onions and red sauce was a favorite. The green sauce is so good too and I was grateful they gave me a side of it. Our server (I believe named Seven) was fantastic. Great, casual place to eat or grab to go.

Typed 'soul food' into maps @ 730pm on a Sunday and drove over, hoping for the best. 🤞🏽 😬 A quick skim of the menu offered rotisserie chicken, collar' greens and candied yams. 👌🏽 I asked for a sample of the greens to see if they was hittin' or not. The gentleman at the counter obliged me, and they was on point. 👌🏽 Ordered the plate with chicken, greens, red beans and yellow rice, candied yams. They served me a tasty spin on Soul Food' with it's African, Caribbean and South American roots. Thanks Brassa for the yummy food, exceptional service and late hours on Sunday.

Google
I ordered takeout chicken dinner and I’ve been here many times before and this was the worst. It was so dry. When I got home soon as she didn’t understand what I’m trying to say I wanted the beans and rice, but I said black beans with yellow rice. I guess I’m totally different. I guess it was peas and rice. I never had it before and I wasn’t crazy about that either. Anyway will be a while before I come back cause I’m always had good food here maybe the busy time is a better turnover or something it’s pressure mean this was before dinner hour by after lunch. .

Google
We had the huevos rancheros bowl and the arroz con pollo bowl and a piece of cornbread. These items were both well-seasoned, and filling. I want to try the catfish bowl next time. The service-included pricing is very refreshing. The atmosphere was worthy of a date night. The sidewalk seating is a nice asset as well.

Yelp
I come to and enjoy Brasa consistently enough that I should finally write a review. The short: service is consistently friendly and helpful, food is consistently good, great gluten-free option with (thus far) no cross-contamination incidents, and a very casual atmosphere. All of my friend group have different favorites: the egg sandwich, the pork bowl, the chilaquiles (my personal favorite.) Every protein comes in different forms: a plate, a sandwich, or a bowl. Most options (except the sandwiches and a couple of sides) are gluten-free. Quick run down of what I've tried: * Chilaquiles with red sauce (the GOAT): the red sauce is such a great flavor and pairs well with the smothered chicken. Their pickled jalapenos and an egg on top makes it a perfect weekend lunch dish. * Egg sandwich: the red sauce reappears on this, to great effect once more. Otherwise it's a simple-but-great egg sandwich served with their tortilla chips. * Fish sandwich: not bad, not my favorite. Flavors are not as punchy as the other options I've had. * Mac and cheese: delightful and simple, thick cheese sauce, no complaints. Crispy yuca, fried plantains, sweet cornbread, also all good. Really, the menu is full of great options. Their beverages don't disappoint either, the coffee and tea are very nice quality -- tea always comes out with a great color and flavor (not bitter at all), coffee pleases even the pickiest coffee nerds in my friend group. Also: no tipping, service fees are built into the menu prices.

Yelp
We ate supper here. It used to be that you ordered at the counter and sat yourself, but now they seat you and take your order at the table. Our orders were taken quickly by our friendly waitresses and our meals came out in a timely manner. They were happy to accommodate a few special requests regarding our food choices, which I appreciated. We all enjoyed our meals and the various sides we ordered. I thought there would be a little more meat on the plates, but it was still enough to be a satisfying meal. It was kind of loud in the restaurant, but if it had been better weather we would've sat outdoors.

Yelp
The smothered chicken and green sauce were so flavorful. Tried candied yams for the first time, and they were delicious, including the plantains. We were originally skeptical because of the lack of options on the menu, but everything was scrumptious. The fish was our clear favorite. We all left satisfied, but agreed that we would have liked slightly bigger portions. Reasonable pricing.

Dan Z.

Yelp
Never have I paid 60 dollars for today's value of chicken at 12 dollars. The chicken is bland. The portion is small. I thought I would be getting creole style chicken. Instead... I got pigeon and it was the same size with no flavor. I do not recommend it whatsoever.

Yelp
Brasa has been a longtime favorite - I've enjoyed their a la carte menu of meats and sides for years. Just tried some of their assembled dishes. Got the chilaquiles and vegetable curry. The chilaquiles had great flavor and the dish was gobbled up quickly. Will order again but will ask for extra salsa verde next time since it was light on that. The vegetable curry was served on a bed of brown rice. Was also very tasty with a little spice, but more of a MN Nice level.

Yelp
Went here for a quick date last night and it was different than I remember. One there was sit down service, as well counter order but for takeout only. In the past we ordered at the counter and got a number. Our waitress was lovely and attentive. My husband liked his meal better than I liked mine. Overall felt it was a bit of small portion sizes for the prices. Street parking available.

Yelp
This is one of my go to takeout spots. My wife and I love the pork bowls. I always get order extra meat. The yuca fries are always great and so are the fried plantains. The spot itself looks on the small side for dine-in but it's never looked too crowded to me. Definitely recommend it!

Yelp
The service at Brasa is always friendly. The restaurant is clean and the huge windows provide a view for good people watching. The food is tasty and delicately seasoned. I have been there several times ...introducing friends and family to this new location. There was only one time when I was there with my sister and the food was less than enjoyable. I ordered the fish bowl and collard greens. The macaroni and cheese was overcooked, tasteless and the yams were cool...not warm enough to enjoy. I hope this was a one-time fluke...and not anything leaning towards a pattern.

Yelp
Stopped by for a happy hour / dinner with some people. First time there. Small place but clean and well lit. Started off with a beer and some crispy yuca to start. The yuca came with a green sauce which was tasty but the yuca itself was not very crispy. Fresh and hot but would have liked it to be more crispy. Ordered a two piece rotisserie chicken. The chicken was cooked perfectly and moist. My only complained was that it had a little bit more seasoning. Also got to try a smothered chicken bowl which was put together well. All in all not a bad experience and would try it again. Maybe ask for some hot sauce on the side if they have it.

Yelp
Omg!!!! This place is so awesome! The location is very neat and clean. The customer service is probably some of the nicest people I have ever met. They are very friendly and have a great upbeat personality. Now..... the food . I had the chicken with beans and rice. I'm not a huge black bean person but these were great. The rice had good texture and flavor. We now come to the chicken. I'm going to have to say that it was probably the best tasting chicken I have ever eaten. Everything from the way it just pulls apart with your fork to the seasoning l makes my mouth water just writing about this lol. Please go try this place. I don't think you would regret it

Yelp
My wife and I were out for our weekly new restaurant lunch in the Cities. I have been to the Brasa in Minneapolis a long time ago and it was awesome. This is a new location near Lake Harriet and it was about 11:30 on a Saturday and we were told we could sit wherever we wanted. I did notice a nice set of taps at the counter, but it was only water for today. We got our waters and menus and they are a QR code ordering place and they don't do tips, they roll the expense into the menu price. This is a newish practice and I am kind of liking it. You know all the employees, not just the servers are making a livable wage and a 401K and medical expenses. There was a crisp take-out business happening, but I ordered the pulled pork plate which is slow roasted w/garlic-lime mojo with a mixed greens and tomatoes salad w/pepitas, cucumber & house ranch (Vegan). It came out fairly quickly and the pork was super juicy and flavorful. It is a rush of flavor on your first bite that is almost overwhelming. The salad is really good size and super fresh and full of veggie goodness and the house ranch is a perfect match. My wife got a small bowl of the black beans and I had a bite and it was almost like a soup and it was equally great. Great new place to try. Super nice staff as well.

Yelp
Most items are gluten free and their yuka fries with the green sauce are AMAZING!!! Gluten free fryer and home made chips are perfectly salted. I have been completely satisfied every time I've been there, and it's often! I always get the large rice and beans (black beans) so I have left overs for the week. I'm a fan of the smothered chicken.

Yelp
Great spot for some awesome food! I will say the menu can be a bit confusing - you pick you meat and then you pick how you want it - plate, bowl, sandwich or a la carte. The food is DELICOUS. The service is pretty good. Try the yuca with the green sauce - YUM! Really, get as much green sauce as you possibly can and then think and discuss over lunch how to possibly recreate the sauce at home!!

Yelp
Awesome experience, fantastic food. A+ I have to type at least 85 characters for this to be a legit review so here you are.

Yelp
Fun place for a quick and casual meal! The little patio on 46th is really nice and felt private even though it's on a busy street. I came with my parents and we tried a few things: - vegan plate with red beans - chicken sandwich - collard greens - red sangria Everything was good! For someone who doesn't eat meat, I probably missed out on the chicken which is what it seems they are known for. However, the vegan plate was a lot of food and well flavored and I can always get down with a few yuca fries. Collards were awesome and my parents said the chicken sandwich was great. Will go again for the right occasion and to try the vegan curry when the weather gets cooler. Nice to have something like this in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Food served in Togo containers even for dining in. Not hot Small portions Unfriendly staff Over priced Very small dining area

Yelp
Disclaimer: I ordered from DoorDash and maybe the fact that I didn't eat there was a factor. Or maybe not (?) I got my order, and it was still warm. It smelled great and looked great, but... the chicken was quite dry. I mean at times it felt like I was eating a fistful of flour. That went for both the white and the dark meat. I didn't get any sides, but also the way the chicken is cut, caused a lot of small bone fragments to be in the chicken and I came very close to swallowing small bone fragments several times. It wasn't a pleasant experience. Sucks because I really wanted to like this place and wanted a good place to order rotisserie chicken from.

Julie L.

Yelp
Food is delicious and very well priced. My son works late and takes out often. The business gives employees compensation including benefits so a tip is not required. Our server (Jacob) was beautiful inside and out and provided excellent service. We wanted to tip because of how much we enjoyed. Unfortunately, we did not have cash on hand. Jacob deserves this five star review. This is truly my favorite place in MN!
google avatar

Montessahall H.

Yelp
The food and service were both top notch for lunch. I especially like their business model of adding the additional costs to offer employees decent benefits and salary to the menu items rather than as a surcharge.

Trisha S.

Yelp
Everything on menu is delicious our favorite is the chicken,! Jalapeño spinach, rice and beans AND guacamole and chips with the homemade aioli green sauce. I appreciate the curbside delivery as a handicapped patron.
google avatar

Elijah W.

Yelp
I'd say this would be the perfect place to stop for lunch. They are quick and the food was well cooked. The chicken had a very nice Smokey flavor and the grits were nice and creamy. By far the best part was the toffee pudding which has to be tried if you go.
google avatar

Andrew W.

Yelp
We had the farm fresh eggs bowl which was fresh and delicious. Coffee was good, smooth and strong. Amazing service. And I will always support a restaurant that pays its staff a living wage plus solid benefits.
google avatar

Troy P.

Yelp
I like Brasa, the pulled pork and smothered chicken is pretty good. It's easy to get carried away wanting to try a variety of things but totally worth it. Yuca fries, red beans and rice, greens and mac & cheese are all tasty side options. This location has a little patio on 46th and decent amount of indoor seating. Definitely nice to have in that neighborhood.
google avatar

Annie G.

Yelp
Great night at Brasa! The cornbread and chocolate chip cookie were beyond! I had the rotisserie chicken plate with collared greens. Greens solid - chicken good but not the best ever! I prefer fried so that could have been it. Pork plate was outstanding !

Sarah K.

Yelp
My first time. I ordered delivery. All around delicious. I ordered the whole rotisserie chicken because I had a craving for drumsticks and crispy parts. The seasoning was nice and warm. Not greasy or overly salty. Really hit the spot. I added the green and hot sauces. Yucca kissed with citrus. Nice and fluffy inside. Yum. Black and red beans were equally delicious. Beans had great structure with flavorful creamy sauce. Black beans tasted kind of smoky but not super intense. Cornbread was moist with a hint of sweet maple. Coleslaw was super fresh and lightly dressed. I really enjoyed this meal and now I have leftovers for days. Can't wait to share with my roommate. I know he will make sure we return for more. Thank you for listening. Give Brasa a try. I'm glad I did.
google avatar

Jacque B.

Yelp
This location's food isn't as good as the other two. I ordered a half pound of smothered chicken and the sauce was super watery and kind of bland and I found a bone in it which was super annoying. I think for 15$ it was a total rip off. Super disappointed. Improvements needed for sure.
google avatar

Allison C.

Yelp
Lovely patio for a relatively quick meal. I got the Arroz Con Pollo bowl with yellow rice, ham, chicken, olives, and tomato gravy. Very flavorful and also a giant portion. Ate about half and the rest make fantastic leftovers. It was about $13 for a bowl, so a bit steep, but given the amount of food it's not too bad. Staff working there were nice and explained the ordering system, which is order and pay with your phone and they bring the food to your table.
google avatar

Nina M.

Yelp
I have been a big Brasa fan for a few years, and I'm so glad they've opened a location in South Minneapolis. Everything is fantastic. I'm partial to the pulled pork plate with the green sauce. My kid is crazy about their Mac and cheese. Husband likes the chicken and the plantains. Guacamole is good. Fried yuca is amazing. Friendly, easy ordering. I'm so happy to have them in my neck of the woods.

LuAnn Y.

Yelp
Food was very good. Loved the yuca and the plantains. Nice neighborhood place. Staff was friendly and fun. Prices were very reasonable. Gratuity is included in prices.

Cass S.

Yelp
Flavorful, delicious food for a good price. We ordered six dishes and everything was phenomenal. Also loved that they pay their employees a living wage, so it is a no tipping restaurant. We will go back again and again.
google avatar

Yelp
The other day my wildest dream came true. I was going for a walk in my neighborhood and what do I see in the distance? a new Brasa location on 46th and grand!!! Everything on this menu is delicious and I recommend dousing your chicken in green sauce. Yesterday I stopped in to place an order and my food was ready in 5 min. So excited to eat here all the time.

Jeff O.

Yelp
The employees and chips are great and the only reason I'm giving 2 stars. I got the pulled pork which was dry and tasted like there was absolutely no seasoning. The salad was decent but nothing special that you couldn't make at home in 2 minutes. This was my second time eating from here and will not be giving them a 3rd chance.

Kayla M.

Yelp
One of my favorites! Great for family style meals. Works well for take out and reheats well. Everything here is delicious!

Katherine Z.

Yelp
Awesome addition to the neighborhood! Pulled smothered chicken, collards, yuca fries with sauce, red beans and rice and of course cornbread were all incredibly delicious. Perfect for a cold winter Saturday night in!

Megan H.

Yelp
This is our covid take-out staple and so so happy it's in our hood. The smothered chicken is SO good! And, always get the Mac n cheese. Staff is super kind. My husband dropped his wallet and they called right away to let me know it was safe. You always have our business, Brasa!
