The Best New Cocktail Bars in Austin Right Now, October 2024

"Another hotel bar, this time, it’s the new lobby bar at the Hotel Van Zandt in the Rainey area as of September. The cocktail menu features drinks that lead bartender Curtis Janto considered as updated takes on disregarded beverages. There’s a fantastic Grasshopper (made with a house-created peppermint methe), a classy Rusty Nail (including an almond butter fat-washed Drambuie), and the Fuzzy Navel. There are indoor dine-in services." - Nadia Chaudhury

Downtown Austin Hotel Van Zandt Opens New Cocktail Bar Brass Poppy | Eater Austin

"Opening in mid-September as the new lobby bar at Hotel Van Zandt (605 Davis Street in the Rainey neighborhood), this intimate bar aims to offer a getaway from the bustle of Rainey Street. The cocktail program, led by Curtis Janto, reframes dismissed classics from the 1970s–1990s with inventive touches — examples include a Grasshopper with house-made crème de menthe, crème de cacao, Branca Menta and macadamia whipped cream; a Pink Lady made with gin, pisco, dry sherry, hazelnut oil, house spiced grenadine and lemon; and a Rusty Nail featuring beeswax‑rested scotch and an almond‑butter fat‑washed Drambuie with lemon oil. The drinks list is complemented by draft Texan beers, a canned Mexican beer and a concise wine‑by‑the‑glass selection. Executive chef Sergio Ledesma is offering internationally inspired snacks such as vegetable-and-fruit nigiri (no fish), a layered French onion dip with piquillo peppers, hard‑boiled eggs, steakhouse chips, tout oe and caviar, a duck al pastor infladita (meat tucked inside a puffy tortilla), and a playful cookies‑and‑milk dessert of Dutch chocolate cookie sandwiches filled with foie gras mousse served with truffle‑infused cream. The bar is part of a Markzeff‑designed lobby renovation that emphasizes mixed metals (including brass), jewel tones, vintage furniture and 1960s–1970s aesthetics. Hours are 4–11 p.m. Sunday–Thursday and 4 p.m.–midnight Friday–Saturday, with indoor dine‑in service." - Nadia Chaudhury

Rating: 3.2/5 We came for a Halloween event that featured a doggy costume contest, tarot readings, and a DJ. They had two October special drinks, so I tried the Witches Brew ($16), made with spirulina-infused Patrón Tequila, egg white, peach, and fresh lime juice. The drink had a beautiful presentation with a pretty blue color and purple powder dusted on top, but the taste was just okay. I wouldn’t recommend it or order it again.

Angel, my bartender was the highlight of the evening! He was sweet and engaging and asked us some questions to help determine what drinks we would like. The menu is unique so having his guidance was much appreciated. The drinks themselves are basically a work of art. They were not only aesthetically beautiful but flavorful as well. Definitely recommend checking this bar out for some good drinks and great ambiance and vibes.

Brass Poppy, a relatively recent addition to the Hotel Van Zandt, is a craft cocktail lounge serving a variety of complex but balanced cocktails. In my visit, I got the Jet Pilot, a Rum forward cocktail with hints of vanilla and cinnamon, and the Fuzzy Navel, a Mezcal based drink with ginger, honey, and fruit. Both drinks were well made, with a bit of sweetness, but both very pleasant to drink. The bartender was very knowledgeable about the menu and helpful in answering questions. It is a hotel bar, so it is open to the lobby, but there isn't much foot traffic at night, so don't let that deter you! I'd definitely recommend it if you're in the area!

Wanted to try out the new Brass Poppy bar at the Van Zandt and decided the TATTOOS, TAROT, & TEQUILA pop-up was the perfect excuse. Very fun event and the Brassy Poppy did not disappoint! Service, staff, drinks and snacks all hit the mark. Great jump off point for a night out.

Yelp
This place is so cute and chic. They just opened it next to the lobby at the hotel Van Zandt. Definitely a cute place to grab cocktails and then go somewhere else or just to have a chill night there with your friends or a date. I have to say their cocktails are so cute and unique. You definitely must try them. They do a spinoff of old-school names for them. The staff there were so nice. I do recommend getting a reservation on the weekends but during the week you get seated right away, which is great. Definitely get some of the food. I had some of the appetizers and they were delicious. The sushi was actually vegan sushi and it was really good. The one that looks like it has tuna on top was actually watermelon, but it had the tuna taste because of the seaweed flakes. My favorite one was the shiitake mushroom one. Also got the jamon serrano which was delicious. Definitely get this. They have a lot more on their menu and even heavy plates for you to eat.

Yelp
This is a small bar in Hotel Van Zandt. The service was great. We got seated and an ordered immediately. The Brass Poppy cocktail was really good. I enjoyed the pineapple and midori mixture. I had the duck al pastor infladita. It was delicious. I only wish I had more! It was savory and sweet with the pineapple and gel avocado puree. I would definitely return to Brass Poppy.
