Strategically situated within the beautifully aged Victoria Concert Hall, the restaurant exudes old-world charm with a classy ambience. It is the kind of place where first impressions matters. Unsurprisingly, many couples chose this spot for a romantic dinner, with the atmosphere effortlessly setting the mood.
Service was strangely inconsistent, with different waitstaff displaying varying degrees of hospitality. However, the common issue was the difficulty in getting their attention. This might be attributed to the dim lighting, which can make recognising guests’ facial cues hard to notice, until frustration sets in. Both food and drinks took a while to arrive, despite it being a relatively quiet Friday evening. In addition, there was a two-hour seating limit that we were not aware of beforehand. Due to the slow pacing between courses, we were eventually moved from our cozy corner table to a less private lounge area to finish our mains, which disrupted the flow of our dinner.
Pricing is fair and accessible, especially considering the setting and overall theme. The menu offers a wide selection of dishes, complemented by an extensive cocktail list. The food hints of Michelin-level finesse, but what it does deliver is textbook consistency, generous portions, and fresh ingredients, particularly in the seafood dishes. We created our own tasting menu by ordering multiple plates across the starters, entrees, and mains. While none stood out as exceptional, everything was solid and satisfying.
The cocktails were the true highlight. Each drink was meticulously crafted, with the alcohol seamlessly integrated to enhance the intricate flavours.
For dessert, we opted for the petit fours. The macarons turned out to be peanut butter-filled, which was a surprise, especially as one of us has a mild peanut allergy. Thankfully, it was a non-issue eventually, but it would be helpful if allergens were clearly indicated in the menu, especially for diners with more serious concerns.
All in all, a pleasant evening with great vibes. Once the service smooths out its rough edges, this could easily become a go-to for all, and not just special, occasions.
