Yelp
I attended a murder mystery dinner production of 'Love Writes a Deadly Verse' February 13, 2016. One star is the lowest rating allowed by Yelp, otherwise it would be minus one star. In fairness, allow me to say that this is the first time I have ever attended a performance by the Brazos Theatre Group. Their website advertisement states: "The Brazos Theatre Group is a group of local semi-professional actors and individuals formed to offer dinner theatre performances. The group offers a variety of theatrical productions, including mystery dinner theatre, comedy, musicals and dramas." They also state having a new location. They have obviously been around for awhile and perhaps have had some good performances. I do not know about that. This review is of my experience of this performance last Saturday at their new location. Paid $59.00 for two tickets. I easily found the strip center but had difficulty locating the actuall entrance. The sign on the door was small and not easily seen from the parking lot. The venue had a moderate sized room with about 20 folding tables and plastic folding chairs. Very uncomfortable and tightly squeezed together. Literally rubbing elbows and accidentally kicking each others feet all night. The angles of the tables allowed some to view the stage easily while others had to look over their shoulder to see the stage. Similar to driving a car and having to look through the driver side back seat window. Again, very uncomfortable. The tables had assigned seating. Each table had six chairs. This means that two sets of couple could sit side-by-side however the last couple had to sit across from each other. Three chairs on one side and three on the other. The guests were asked to form a line for dinner. We had to walk into another room to pick-up the plates and be served dinner. We carried the food back to our tables. The dinner was pesto chicken and pasta with a salad. Not good at all. The dinner was far less than Luby's quality and some of the salad was wilted. I will say however, the chocolate cake was very good. After serving yourself, getting your own water or tea and then getting up once more to throw away your own plates, the play began. The actors made a very sad attempt at humor. Some guests chuckled to be polite and there was light scattered applause. The play began with horrible acting as characters read poetry. Very boring as guests struggled to be comfortable sitting in plastic chairs. Some guests got up and left. IN SUMMERY, this was an absolute train wreck. Too many people squeezed into a small venue paying way to much to sit on folding plastic chairs, eating what tasted like last week's left overs watching poorly written play performed by very amateur actors.
No one at my table had visited this place before and after discussing our experience with each other, none of us plan to return!!
