Bread & Chocolate Review - West End - Washington DC - The Infatuation

"If you’re looking for a comfy spot to have some quiet alone time, Bread & Chocolate in the West End will fit the bill. There’s nothing spectacular about the French food (our ham & cheese croissant was still cold in the middle), but you can sip on a coffee or tea while enjoying the contemporary music. There’s no wifi, so don’t expect to work, but it is the kind of place where you can bring a book and enjoy your solitude." - Tristiaña Hinton

I ordered an apricot croissant, caramel pecan bun, and a cappuccino. My son had a GF scone, which he enjoyed very much. My croissant was outstanding in every way, buttery, flaky perfection.

Google
If you looking for a Sunday morning coffee and a pastry, that is the place to go. This place have all other options like Panini toast and sandwiches but made me have selection of coffee and pastry. I did try their chocolate croissant and it was packed and delicious.

Madi O'Connor

Google
A cute and busy cafe. The croissants are delicious, if I could recommend all of them, I would. A must try if you go in. They also have sandwiches (both breakfast and lunch) and salads. The coffee is very sweet, maybe ask for less than the normal amount of syrup flavoring.

Google
Terrible doughy croissants with no crisp and little flavor. Even Starbucks has better ones. The cold brew I ordered was very watery and lacked any depth of flavor. And the line system is very confusing, which is an odd thing to even have to bring up. But all of us in line weren’t sure if we were even in the right spot. Avoid this spot and get yourself something more flavorful elsewhere.

Google
Bread & Chocolate is a great place to come alone or with a friend. It has a cozy and comfortable atmosphere, the coffee is good (I got a cappuccino), and the food is fresh. Wonderful place to spend your morning.

Google
I come here EVERY morning and Cheyenne knows exactly what I want and greets me with a smile. I’m new to the area and this place has quickly become a part of my morning routine. Thank you, Cheyenne!

Google
The pastries and the latte were really good! I would definitely go back, but maybe at another time other than a Sunday morning. They were extremely busy. I had actually placed my order online, and took me about fifteen minutes to get there. When I arrived, I had to wait an additional 10-15 min for my latte to be made, so there wasn’t really a point for me to order online. I probably would have gotten my coffee and pastries at the same time as if I had waited online.

Google
Good morning. I placed an order online for it to be ready at 9:46. Unfortunately, it wasn't ready until 10:05. it wasn’t even started until I arrived at 10 o’clock. The staff member, whose name I believe is Edcardo, did not apologize for the delay. Instead, he smiled and responded with a dismissive, “It’s okay, ma’am.” When I requested the manager’s contact information, he refused to provide it, despite claiming he would share an email address with me. When I pointed out the inappropriateness of his lack of professional courtesy, he insultingly referred to me as a child. He then interrupted me when I tried to speak to another employee, and again called me a child when I addressed his behavior. I informed him that his conduct was very unprofessional, and I believe he should no longer be employed there. Such behavior is detrimental to your business and will drive customers away. I frequent your establishment regularly and intend to share this experience with my colleagues. If Edcardo is present during my next visit, I will not reconsider returning. I would advise if you have cameras there that you watch them. It’s disgusting on how his behavior

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised! I stopped by for pastries to bring to my friend's parents. I ordered a variety of croissants and the workers 3 favorite cookies. The highlights were the almond croissant and the oatmeal scotch cookie. Wow flavors were on point, not too sweet. Cookie was soft and enough crunch the croissant was layered and flakey! All the other croissants and cookies were consistent as well those two just were our favorites. I wouldn't hesitate to try any flavors that caught my eye here!

Yelp
We had a dirty chai and Swiss Mint Coffee, the dirty chai was great but I love the Swiss Mint. If you like mint and coffee you'll love that drink. We also had the almond croissant and berry streusel pastry's both of which were great. The baristas were nice and good customer service. The ambiance of the place is great, perfect for brunch or morning coffee. They also have sandwich and salad bar. We will be going back :)

Yelp
Just came in for the first time in quite a while, and it is just fine. In particular I like the ambiance and the service; it has a real urban-fancy vibe that hits the spot sometimes. The food has always been fine, especially the baked goods which people always really like in my experience. This time I had a panini which was good; would have been a bit flavorless without the sauce, which came in a cup on the side. The toasted bread in there was great. I got a mocha which was satisfactory. You can park in the lot behind Victoria Crossing for up to three hours; that lot can be a little dicey, and I hate how you're stuck in one lonnnnnnng lane in there. Street parking can be found as well. I've restored to parking on Summit, and that really isn't that bad. Mostly I just want to hang out here with friends for kind of a while.

Yelp
A Grand Avenue staple for the best croissants, cookies and breakfast paninis. This is a sister company to Cafe Latte and therefore offer the same espresso and moo steamer drinks. Some of my favorites include the plain and florentine croissants, fruit cup, egg/cheese and spinach panini, amaretto, m&m and chocolate chip cookies along with the spice island latte. This is a cafeteria style line so be prepared to wait. There are many tables inside and if you come in the nicer months, they offer a few tables outside as well. Fun fact: I got engaged here in 2022!

Yelp
Bread and Chocolate was recommended to me in a conversation with a gal at a store one day so I ended up here with some friends. We got chocolate croissants (YUM!), coffee drinks, and some breakfast. Our breakfast items (an omelet and lunch paninis that are available during breakfast) were what we expected. The red pepper sauce we got with our food was pretty good! For drinks, we tried the turtle mocha (caramel + chocolate) and the raspberry white choc latte - both with reduced sweetness. The team members who helped us with our orders were super nice and helpful with our decision making - great service! There's a corner of the cafe with a fireplace as well as plenty of seating by the big windows where you can watch the hustle and bustle of this busy part of Saint Paul. Street parking is available in the area around the cafe. Definitely recommend stopping by!

Yelp
I was not a fan of the coffee here. On a scale of 1-10 I would give the coffee a 5... For the amount of money they charge they should invest in better coffee machines. I ordered chocolate and almond croissants and they were excellent. I would come back for the pastries but not for the coffee.

Yelp
YUM so good delicious perfection amazing love it need it nothing like it great price for an amazing flavor

Yelp
Enjoyed a lovely lunch. The tuna melt and the scone was heavenly and the swedish coffee was exquisite. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!

Yelp
I always tell myself I'm getting something different and then....I just don't. The croissants are SO flakey and yummy I can't resist! The apple ones are my favorite but they were out by early afternoon on a Saturday so I bought a chocolate and a raspberry cream cheese. Both had ample filling. The dark but sweet chocolate hits just right. I enjoyed the raspberry but didn't love that one side was cream cheese and the other raspberry instead of mixed together.

Yelp
I really like Bread and Chocolate for their pastries and croissants. I recently went in after a haircut over at JUUT across the street and picked up half a dozen pastries to include ham & cheese croissants, butter croissants, and two chocolate chunk cookies. Everything was so good, I shared the cookies with my dad when he came to visit, he loved them too! The ham and cheese croissant was my favorite though if I had to choose, when I got home I found that those were freshly made and still warm from the oven! One star off because Bread & Chocolate does not sell bread. Which you'd kind of think based on the title of the restaurant, but rest assured, you can always go across the street to Cafe Latte on Grand which has the same owner for fresh baked bread. I will have to give that a try sometime.

Yelp
We went here for dessert because of their plentiful options for cake. We were not disappointed. We got their brown butter frosted banana cake and it was amazing. A generous slice and a very moist cake with a delicious frosting. What could be better?! .
google avatar

Luke G.

Yelp
Spacious inside with lots of seating! This provides lots of options for food! You can get a sandwich/panini or grab something from their pastry display. All the pastries were really good! I especially liked the cinnamon roll and apple croissant!

Yelp
"I like the cookies here. And the hot chocolate. And the whipped cream." -my 4-year old Great place to stop in for a treat or lunch. The hot chocolate is thick and rich, the whipped cream is the real deal.
google avatar

Xia Y.

Yelp
Stopped by for a cup of coffee. The staff were friendly. Service was quick. Seating was limited so we sat outside--thankful for the beautiful weather though.
google avatar

Cassie M.

Yelp
Went here for a quick coffee and sweet treat. Ended up getting an iced turtle latte and brownie. I got the brownie to go and drank the coffee right away. The turtle latte had the perfect amount of sweetness! The brownie was not very sweet and tasted a lot like dark chocolate. Although I wish it was a little sweeter, it was very good! The service was good considering I went at a busier time. The seating was pretty packed on the inside, so I sat outside because of the good weather. Overall, it's very good, and I will be returning!
google avatar

Monique W.

Yelp
Lovely place but the only downside is that their very limited on outlets. I believe the worker stated that they only have a couple but she wasn't sure where. I really do like their selection of food and place of seating, and they have a fireplace not a lot of places have one. So yeah just be sure to have your phone and laptops charged before coming.
google avatar

Yelp
Everything I've tried here had been the best ever! Anytime I'm in the area I will always stop.

Yelp
I like to go here, get a couple ham and cheese croissants in a few different bags. I play the 'morning fairy' and drop them off to friends and family. Everyone raves about them. Try the ham and cheese croissants, so yummy. This morning I got 9 :)
google avatar

Malia C.

Yelp
Great spot for a quick meal or pastry, we liked our chocolate croissants and we had an egg salad sandwich. Service was quick on a Saturday afternoon. It was a bit full and loud for seating so we sat in the common area of a few other businesses and it was comfortable and quieter. We look forward to trying more on the menu!

Yelp
Pastries are always . Literally the nicest people work here. Grand avenue classic. Definitely a must.
google avatar

Treena C.

Yelp
Oh the options! So many types of croissants and baked goods. All delicious and fresh. I was here on a Sunday and although it was busy, the line moved quickly. Good thing because I wanted a latte! The latte was perfectly smooth and warm. And my strawberry cream cheese croissant was worth every cycle class I am going to have to do to wear it off. They also offer paninis and salads. Plenty of seating inside and tables were cleared quite regularly. I will be back!
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
I don't know why you're asking, the sign says and , but they have that as well as sandwiches and salad (similar to CL), baristas, and a nice place to sit and watch the world go by.
google avatar

Anne C.

Yelp
I never knew I loved scones until one day my attending brought in a box of B&C scones for a weekend breakfast treat. Wow. They are delicious. Everyone in the workroom wanted to know where they were from. They are big. They are fluffy. They are just the right amount of sweet and buttery but not too much. Must try.

Tracy B.

Yelp
We just happened across this place and went in for an afternoon treat. We had the chocolate croissant and a raspberry/cream cheese filled croissant. They were both amazing. Fresh and heavenly - highly recommend. We will be back before we leave town.
google avatar

Christa K.

Yelp
Good place to grab a hot drink and a pastry or sandwich. A bit easier to order and get in and out quickly than going to cafe latte to sit down. Which is also an awesome spot and owned by the same business I believe. They have sandwich ordering on the left side and coffee on the right. Their chocolate chip cookies are drool worthy.

Yelp
Stopped at Bread and Chocolate with my mom for some morning coffee. It's a bustling place on a weekday morning, but the service was fast and we didn't wait in line too long. The bakery case was full with a variety of beautiful pastries. We were delighted to see they had gluten free cherry almond scones in the bakery case. It's not very often you see homemade AND gluten free scones for sale! They were so delicious and fresh. My mom ordered an oat milk latte which she liked. I ordered a cold brew, but was pretty bummed out by the drink. It's definitely not cold brew. It was more like brewed coffee that was thrown over ice. So weak and not flavorful at all. Bread and Chocolate, I would recommend rechecking your cold brew recipe or labeling it on the menu as "iced coffee" so your customers aren't disappointed when they order it.

Yelp
I e been coming to B&C aka bread and chocolate for a very very long time. It's always been a place to get something sweet, sandwiches and a coffee. My favorite is their Raspberry Cream Cheese Croissant. It's always perfect and if your lucky enough to get it still warm you're in for even better experience.

Yelp
Visited again on a Saturday with my parents. We were able to find seating and check out pretty easily. The selection wasn't as wide as usual but we visited at 2 in the afternoon so totally understandable if they were running low. Anyway, grabbed a magic bar for myself and then my parents both got a cookie. Super yummy and super filling.

Yelp
I love pastries and any baked good, especially from local family owned shops, so if I could live here, I would! Growing up in St. Paul, my older sisters used to take me to Cafe Latte or Bread and Chocolate for an extra special treat! Did you know they are sister family owned businesses and kitty cornered from each other on Grand Ave? Another reason to support both! My go to is usually one of their delicious scones, which btw usually runs out fast on the weekends (I got there at 10am on a Sunday and they were all gone). My new favorite if you are looking for a savory baked goodie is the Florentine croissant, filled with spinach, parmesan, and scallions- buttery, savory and oh so filling! I don't usually get my coffee or tea here but my sister loves their chai. There is also some options for a warm panini/sandwiches too. As for covid- it seems like they are taking it seriously, which I appreciate! Everyone was wearing a mask, had gloves and there are social distancing signs plus every other seating booth/table is blocked. As for parking, there is a free parking lot in the back and some street parking on the sides.

Yelp
By far the best cookies and bars!! A little pricey but it's truly worth it!! Perfect all around!! Parking in back of entrance!! Alway clean!! And they also serve sandwiches and drinks ( coffee, teas and soda) !! A must go destination!!
google avatar

Chickadee M.

Yelp
My first time back here after two + years. I offered my croissants and the Swiss almond latte I remembered tasting so good. Not sure why but everything changes after the stupid Covid lockdown, down hill that is. I ordered my usual Swiss almond drink, Took a few sips and straight to the garbage can. I tasted like powder mix, couldn't taste any expresso. Very disappointing.
google avatar

Raj D.

Yelp
Nice place to stop in and grab some coffee for me. Chai for my lady friend. And we split a salted caramel apple bar. Where's the pic you ask? We ate it too fast. Yup it's that good.
google avatar

Dominik D.

Yelp
It's a good place to start your Sunday morning, they have good sandwiches and their pastries go well with their cold brew. It's the kind of place where you feel like you went brunching.
google avatar

Michelle O.

Yelp
I had the best ham and cheese croissant! Add to that, the husband specifically wanted to stop here for the caramel pecan roll. He had one about a year ago and can't stop taking about it. It did not disappoint. He says it's the best he's had since his grandmother passed.
google avatar

Megan M.

Yelp
Great place to grab some cookies and a stellar Cafe Latte or White Chocolate Mocha! Lots of cute shops around and easy parking.
google avatar

Jennie S.

Yelp
Appreciate that they almost always have a gluten free item or two and they're always delicious. I threw caution to the wind yesterday and had a raspberry cream cheese croissant that was truly one of the best things I've ever eaten. The line moves fast. Only downside is the challenging parking.

Susan R.

Yelp
The staff are always wonderful. Why doesn't ownership allow for tipping on a card transaction? This is long overdue - not everyone carries cash. Starbucks on Grand is finally doing this. It's not fair to the employees if you don't. Are you listening ownership? I am not alone in this opinion.
google avatar

Paige O.

Yelp
Whenever I am by Grand, I always stop here. Is has some street parking, but there is a parking ramp across the street by Pottery Barn. The baked goods here cannot be beat. The chocolate croissants are excellent! The cookies and brownies are also always very soft and sweet. Their espresso drinks are rich and flavorful. I always get the turtle mocha and it is amazing hot and iced. They have a wide beverage menu, so it is always fun to try something new. If you go on a weekend morning, it may be hard to find a place to sit, but the pastries and sweets taste just as good on the go! I like to stop in and get something to drink before I go shopping on Grand! The bakery is awesome and very reasonably priced. Come stop in and discover your new favorite drink or pastry. You will not regret it!
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
I'll be honest, I've only had their black coffee and sat beside their indoor fireplace on a couple cozy occasions. BUT I have taken many early morning hot yoga classes right upstairs at Corepower and I cannot tell you how torturous it is to smell the delicious freshly baked goods wafting into the room. I've seen the food coming out of the kitchen here and it looks amazing, I just have never been able to try any. There is ample seating inside, a parking lot in the back, great natural light being on a corner, and good fresh coffee to sip on. Plus that fireplace. No complaints here!

Susan F.

Yelp
Always great pastries and coffees! Great to visit before visiting the many lovely antique.
google avatar

Dianne G.

Yelp
Yummy treats abound! Coffee is okay and, although service can be slow because of lines, the people who work there are usually fairly attentive and quick.

John C.

Yelp
Nice selection of food and pastries. Also several fairly healthy food items and good coffee.
google avatar

MaKenzie H.

Yelp
Vibes were horrendous today. Coffee was terrible. Ordered a mocha and there was no mocha or coffee, basically iced milk, but ice was melted and milk was bad. Customer service was off with more than one employee. Panini was mediocre. Save yourself time and money and probably go somewhere else

Laura H.

Yelp
We stopped for breakfast on our way to visit Macalester and enjoyed coffee and baked goods. The white chocolate and raspberry gluten free scone was delicious! (I'm not even gluten free!)
google avatar

Ashley Q.

Yelp
Love this place. Delicious pastries! Friendly staff. Lingonberry Orange Scones and Raspberries Cream Cheese or Almond Croissants are our favs.
google avatar

Tracey F.

Yelp
I would happily return here. Went in to grab a quick breakfast. Got a potato, egg, and cheese panini, a Raspberry cream cheese croissant and a Swiss almond latte. All were really good. The latte always a hair sweet for my taste, but still fine. I saw some of the ham and cheese croissants come hot out of the oven and they looked delicious. I can't wait to return for more wonderful goodies!
google avatar

Ted G.

Yelp
Located on busy Grand avenue, they do have seating to dine in but also prepare some excellent boxed lunches. I had stopped here several times for a boxed lunch, they prepare sandwiches, chips and homemade desserts that will guarantee to fill you up. My preference is the egg salad sandwich, chips and a chocolate chip cookie. The egg salad is of the best I have had in terms of quality with no overpowering taste in either direction, just a great flavor of the combined, fresh ingredients. Even better, none of that unnecessary celery that many people like to add to their egg salad. They have a selection of chips and some of the best homemade chocolate chip on the avenue. The cookies are larger than I would expect. They obviously have many other items to choose from, including coffee and paninis. Cheers!

Terry M.

Yelp
Neighborhood pastry and deli. The Carmel pecan rolls and ham & cheese croissants are to die for.
google avatar

Connie D.

Yelp
Okay, Bread and Chocolate has some pretty tasty pastries! This was my second time coming here on the weekend, so I was expecting there to be a line, but lo and behold, NO LINE! The cafe itself was pretty busy, but my friend and I were able to get our pastries and find a table with no problems. The first time I came here, I got a cinnamon roll, but this time I wanted to try something new. As I eyed the case to peruse my options, a few things caught my eye. When it comes to pastries anything strawberry, blueberry, raspberry- basically any BERRY will win my heart and stomach haha! I couldn't settle on just one, so I decided to get the raspberry croissant and blueberry scone. The scone was huge and beautifully drizzled with icing. The inside was- forgive me for using this word- *moist* and not too sweet. The raspberry croissant was like a danish and a croissant had a baby. It was a croissant filled with raspberry jam and cream cheese and OMG it was heaven! Heaven on a sugar high, to be exact. The croissant was light and buttery and the filling hit me as if sugar could slap you in the face! It was good, but honestly, I would have been happy with half the croissant. The whole thing was just way too much and too sweet, so I would recommend sharing this, or saving it for later. Luckily, I also ordered a latte that helped me wash the sweetness down a little easier. The atmosphere was bustling, as patrons were coming and going. It would be a nice spot to work, on weekdays, but its pretty busy on the weekends.
