"If you’re looking for a comfy spot to have some quiet alone time, Bread & Chocolate in the West End will fit the bill. There’s nothing spectacular about the French food (our ham & cheese croissant was still cold in the middle), but you can sip on a coffee or tea while enjoying the contemporary music. There’s no wifi, so don’t expect to work, but it is the kind of place where you can bring a book and enjoy your solitude." - Tristiaña Hinton

Google
The best breakfast place we had in DC. Great big hot breakfast options and super delicious coffee! Many cakes and pastries to choose from if you like dessert breakfast! The staff were super friendly and very accommodating to our need to rush in and out for breakfast!

Lovely atmosphere with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. They have daily specials a large display of fresh baked goods. We ordered the Little River Benedict and Black Forest Ham & Gruyere Crepes. Everything came out hot and delicious. The poached eggs were perfect and if the hollandaise is not homemade, it was adjusted so it tasted like it was. The crepes were light and beautifully cooked. Our Americana Coffee was fresh ground. We will definitely eat here the next time we’re in the neighborhood.

Everything was excellent here! Super friendly staff, delicious food, and the worship music was icing on the cake. Our server, Babatunde, took the time to talk with us about the Playlist. We are from Texas, so we will definitely be coming back on our next visit, 10 out of 10!!!

We were in DC visiting and staying at the Fairmont downtown. The hotel staff recommended this place. It was beyond expectation! The waffles and French Toast were outlandish. Service was on the money and MOST IMPORTANTLY the vibe was amazing.

Excellent atmosphere. Good friendly staffs. Food qualify not bad. Try soup of the day and sandwiches

Google
I had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. We came in for breakfast, but the food arrived cold, which was frustrating. The service was incredibly slow, and our take-out order took forever to get ready, only to find it was prepared incorrectly. The staff seemed unprofessional and lacked basic customer service skills. Overall, it was a very poor experience, and I wouldn’t recommend it.

Google
Absolutely amazing experience. I came here for breakfast and ordered the chocolate and banana crepes, and they were so fresh, hot, and delicious. I also felt that all of the menu items were reasonably priced. I came back during lunch time and ordered some gyro wraps with a side of hash browns, and the food was once again very delicious. The cherry on top of this whole experience was the amazing customer service of the staff. One of the employees, Hamido, immediately recognized me as I returned for lunch and gave me a free pastry. He was very kind, caring, and generous. The staff at this restaurant made me feel very at home as I was visiting DC, and I can’t say enough positive remarks about this restaurant. Thank you so much for an amazing experience!

Yelp
Wait I actually can't believe this place has such low reviews because I had one of the best diner-like experiences of my life here and the food we had was amazing. I can't say enough good things about the French Country egg sandwich. That thing is SO GOOD. The salty sweet combination of the ham/egg with the fig spread means so much to me. The bread was soft and contained the sandwich well, and I think about this sandwich every time I look back on the three days I spent in DC. We also tried the strawberry crepe, which came with this strawberry cream inside that I think was house made? It was just so unexpected-- I was really expecting just strawberries and whipped cream, but they took this to the next level. I was so impressed by the cream and it wasn't too sweet. I also ordered an iced chai, which tasted so similar in flavor to an iced chai I've had in NYC that is probably one of the best chais I've had. Not too watery and pretty strong and creamy. The only thing I'll say is that our waitress got our order wrong for both dishes. She came out with a completely different sandwich (we asked for a replacement), and we had actually ordered the blueberry crepe not the strawberry (we just didn't want them to throw the strawberry away so we decided to eat it). Not sure how the order got so wrong, but in the end it was no big deal. This will be a stop next time I'm here 100%

Yelp
i always see this spot filled with people sitting outside when i'm going to my doctors visits. decided to give it a a try. a classic, nice but not too fancy cafe with a spacious inside and nice outdoor seating. saw a couple politicians having lunch (secret service members lingering outside). got the fig and brie sandwich! very yummy but beware of the price has increased since some of these menu photos. cheapest thing is about 13. sandwiches about 16-20 bucks. overall a good local cafe that seems like a neighborhood favorite in a sea of corporate lunch spots, good fast service and food but a little pricey.

Carolina B.

Yelp
Not sure why the low reviews, but this is a very cute cafe! The staff is ALL so very wonderful and personable. We came here as a frazzled family on a long road trip, just needing to simply sit and eat. Our children were antsy and testing our patience, and the staff were kind enough to diffuse some of the situation by giving the kids some sugar lol! Our food came out quickly and was extremely plentiful. Our children had banana Nutella crepes that were absolutely divine! Lots of seating both inside and out, and the location is prime!

Yelp
Was staying in the hotel across the street and found this place looking for breakfast items. What a find - wish they were near my home - coffee was very good as were the different danish and pastries we got, not to meantion the friendly service. Great place

Sonia G.

Yelp
The food was great! We ordered a french toast, oatmeal and scrambled eggs and hash browns. The service was amazing! All the staff were so kind and helpful. A great way to start your day.

Elo S.

Yelp
Nice place for a quick breakfast or brunch. They have variety of pastries and service was good. The employees greeted us right away and brought the menus quickly and didn't have to wait for long for ordering. You can sit outside or inside. The place was not loud and we felt welcomed and really liked the food. Prices are not bad for the area and compare to other places.

Ian P.

Yelp
Amazing service by the very nice waitress who could accommodate all of our needs. My food tasted great and all of my party's food was highly enjoyed by them. The atmosphere is very enjoyable especially on pretty cool D.C. days like it was today where we were able to sit outside on their comfortable chairs and clean tables.

Dan E.

Yelp
Delicious brunch and excellent patisserie. Service is prompt and genial, and staff are attentive. Good coffee, too.

Frances O.

Yelp
Very tasty! I had breakfast there with my young son. Staff was very nice and helpful despite not seeming to serve very young patrons often.

Keith M.

Yelp
I see my last review was seven years ago. Management has changed at least once (thanks, COVID!) and while I miss specific waiters and the joking that used to flow between the kitchen and wait staff, it's still friendly and welcoming place. The food is remains high quality and tasty, and while it can get crowded with a post-church rush, it is a happy crowd. And yes, their shakshuka remains great. Down the street there is a Tatte that has something like three kinds of shakshuka and an amazing collection of pastries. I go there too. The ambience at Bread and Chocolate is much more like family.

Elisabeth M.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch on Thanksgiving and had the falafel salad which was delicious! The falafel were light and almost fluffy in texture with excellent flavor. The lemon dressing was perfect and it was a great compliment to the salad. Lovely waitress.

Malek B.

Yelp
Friendly service, great coffee, french toast, Lite eggs & especially the *Shakchuka* eggs - those were amazing!! Baked (broiled) with lots of tomatoes, onions, maybe some cheese - toast on the side!! Really hit the spot!

Yelp
I don't give this low of a rating often but when you try to rip me off, it takes me to a whole other level. While the pastries look appealing, they are old unfortunately. I suspect that turnover isn't high. So, it all started with my hubby ordering a cappuccino with an extra shot. The barista told the cashier it was a cappuccino and espresso. Well an espresso shot is $3 and an extra shot is $1.79. My husband called them out on this and were told that the register had added tax. Really? The barista was supposed to say cappuccino and extra shot and clearly they did NOT. I selected a strawberry cream puff looking thing. The cream around the edges had hardened and the strawberries were days old. Barely any whip cream and the puff itself was not tender but maybe more biscuit like texture that was hard. Our friend had the fruit tart and the raspberries were sour and there were canned mandarin oranges. Yikes. This time of year, you can put apples or pears as a seasonal fruit. I will say that the chocolate covered strawberry was a nice touch. I can't speak to the rest of the menu, only this experience. We are visitors staying around the corner and it's always nice to find a local coffee shop right? Sorry, not coming back. Quality not the best.

Yelp
So, this Bread & Chocolate is a couple of blocks away from my house and I go there once or twice a year when I need some little treat for myself or for others. The sweets are pretty good - certainly not as good as home-made but they're not crap either. So what is crap about the place? The service, the service, the service. The service is always terrible. The service is always slow. The service is always painful to watch. They take my order. That is the good part. But then they decide to empty the trash. Or help another customer. Or they simply finish up with a personal conversation they were having with a co-worker. Then they forget to grab the tongs to pick up the sweets. Then it takes 15 minutes to find a bag. It is always something. And it is always annoying. Always. I have never had a "service" interaction at Bread & Chocolate that is satisfactory in any way. So, if they close this location, I will not be sad and I will never go out of my way to find another Bread & Chocolate. But, if I am walking by, and I need something, I will probably bite my tongue and go buy it (if I have enough time on my hands).

Lauren N.

Yelp
Friendly service, great omelet and coffee. Great value in an expensive area. Outside seating is nice.

Troy C.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped in here this morning. It is a quiet spot just off a main road through Georgetown. I had the floraine quiche and my wife tried the shakshuka. Both of these dishes were excellently prepared and had amazing flavors. The service was excellent and our server was extremely gracious and peaceful. Made for an enjoyable breakfast experience. Next time we are in DC we will make it a point to enjoy this place again.

Sonora E.

Yelp
One of my favorite downtown breakfast spots! Staff is always friendly and have a warmth to them that makes me feel at home (and they all speak French as far as I can tell, so this is a great place for learning or rusty francophones to practice!) The menu offers a nice variety of classic options. Food will be served to you piping hot. Of the pastries, I've only tried the chocolate croissant and would give it a B. The cakes look delicious and I haven't seen old food like some of the other reviews mention. But if you're looking for a picture perfect patisserie, there are other options (Tatte, for one). Bread & Chocolate has much more to offer than baked goods. Surrounding eateries are either completely soulless or stuffy and overpriced. B&C isn't cheap, but it's not ridiculous. You'll get delicious hot food served with class and hospitality in a peaceful, sunny environment.

Victoria S.

Yelp
Nice place for a weekend brunch. Dining area was spacious and service was very friendly. They have a good selection of pastries and sweets in the front display case (but didn't try them). Opted for items on their food menu. I had their oatmeal with bananas. The bowl was generously filled with creamy thick oats. The bananas and strawberries were ripe and fresh. My companion had the falafel platter with pita and salad and also gave it a thumbs up.

Kimi Z.

Yelp
One of the hidden gems of DC casual weekend brunch! We stopped by on a friend's recommendation and ordered from the $25 brunch deal, which included beverages, an entree, and a basket of pastries (not depicted, we ate it too quickly). The food was fantastic- the poached eggs were the perfect balance of cooked and runny, the fruit and avocado were fresh, and the the hash browns were seasoned impeccably. The service could have been better, thus the 4/5 but we will definitely be back!

Elton N.

Yelp
Sat outside, good service, good food. Price was reasonable. Ate breakfast, did not try deserts

Paul B.

Yelp
Great service; Good food; Good prices (for the neighborhood). This is a greasy spoon and it's a perfect spot for breakfast -- think eggs over easy and endless coffee. This is not a fancy spot, or a place you go for the freshest baked bread. Go here for some low-key breakfast, non-rushed service; and really good eggs (and toasted sour dough bread). Pro-Tip: Opt for toasted sourdough over the croissante.

Charles L.

Yelp
I stopped by for takeout today, I had a croissant that was average, the crust was not very crispy. I had an almond croissant, again the crust was not flaky. The interior was not very buttery. I had a pecan sticky bun that was average.

J W.

Yelp
Friendly and prompt service. I had the kids portion French toast, usually French toast from a restaurant is ok at best, but this was good and moist. Reasonable prices for the area and a nice atmosphere, would recommend without hesitation

Bruce S.

Yelp
The croissant was rich, buttery and flaky. The banana crepe was outstanding. The shashuka was outstanding. The balance between the spices and tomatoes was spot on! Highly recommend!

Desirea S.

Yelp
WOW, Black forest Ham, Egg, Gruyere AND Fig Jam Sammy!! I just walked in because my stomach was hurting and I got so lucky. If you like savory and sweet this sammy is for you. Toasted perfectly on the outside. My Iced Vanilla OATmilk Latte was great and came in a cute mason jar. Staff super friendly! Made my day. (Didn't love the christian music but I'm sure they didn't choose it, maybe corporate did that to them. Super boring and there are so many people who do not practice religion, or have other religions that don't include listening to cheesy Christian music, just my two pennies)

Stephanie R.

Yelp
Found this place near the hotel while staying in DC. My rule on vacation is don't order from a restaurant twice. However, the quiche Lorraine was amazing! I've had it 3 times on my vacation. The employees were so kind and attentive. The vanilla latte - YUM! I highly recommend Bread and Chocolate. Cute place, great food, and wonderful employees. Kudos!!

Mashenka S.

Yelp
That was a very weird experience. My bf prefer all inclusive for $25 where entree, mimosa, coffee and pastries are included. I ordered crepes with apples and cinnamon, cappuccino I asked initially if the apples are fresh or from the can; they told me "fresh, but it is not . It's from the can. Why do you lie then? Pasties looked 1 year old. So dry and not tasty: 1/10. Cappuccino was not hot! And it's more like coffee with a splash of milk. They have around 70 seats, but only 5-7 workers (including mangers and cooks). They are very UNDERSTAFFED. After we just ordered our food, he said that it is a very long waiting time. Also, they have AN OVEN BY THE BAR??? We literally was observing how they were warming up French toasts for customers. Does it mean it is not fresh ?? I am sorry ? I will attach a pic below.

Tom K.

Yelp
Overall a bright, pleasant environment with good, friendly service. Maybe we arrived too late in the day but 2 of the 3 pastries tasted dry and lifeless. Cappuccino was well made and the hot chocolate was creamy, thick and very chocolate rich. Next time, will try in the a.m.

Jazzmina B.

Yelp
PRICEY!! I was visiting the DC area for holiday and needed a place to eat breakfast. Found this little spot on google maps and decided to give it a try. The establishment itself is really cute and cozy. There's also outside seating. My order was to go, and the service was pretty fast. I ordered a bagel w/ cream cheese, two waffles, and a side of bacon. The bagel was 4.50, the bacon was near 4 dollars and the waffles were around 25 dollars. I do wish the waffles included meat with it for the cost. The waffles could've also been a little bit more sweeter, it had a doughy taste to it.

Irene N.

Yelp
The service isn't too bad. Our server looked new and was dealing with the breakfast rush. My cousins and I just wanted quick breakfast before leaving DC. We ordered the salmon quiche, the smoked omelette, and strawberries French toast. French toast and omelette were okay, I've had better for less. The quiche was strangely bitter and crust undercooked. My cousin couldn't finish it and ended up throwing it all up thirty minutes later. I wouldn't recommend this place as there are other options available that probably won't make you sick.

Anonymous U.

Yelp
Great place for lunch and to buy pastries to-go! I wish they came in a box with a sticker and their logo on it, but the pastries were good.

Lee R.

Yelp
After a morning run along the Potomac, the birchermuesli was the exact thing I didn't know I needed. The other positive point I was to make is about the staff. What a joy to have a joyful, helpful and attentive service industry professionals help you start your day.

Kayla P.

Yelp
Very affordable brunch, cute atmosphere, big portions of very good food. Waitress was attentive and brought coffee refills throughout and to-go at the end of brunch. Overall very satisfied with the brunch on a Sunday morning.

Dan C.

Yelp
Came here early to try out the breakfast. Parking in the rear was plentiful and easy to navigate. The staff was attentive and helpful with the menu. Tried the French toast and a breakfast sandwich on a croissant. The French toast was dry and lacked flavor. The same for the breakfast sandwich. The croissant seemed like day old and not fresh. For the price, more was expected.

Ann Y.

Yelp
The service at Bread & Chocolate is stellar! We've come back three times now. The poached eggs on the avocado toast are perfect. And we love the strawberries and cream on the French toast. Highly recommend.

Irene S.

Yelp
We have been twice on our DC vacation. Our doorman made the recommendation. The shakshuka was amazing, served with an amazing thick piece of toast to soak up the sauce. Today we had an omelette and shared a blueberry waffle. So tasty and fresh! The coffee is well balanced and the food is hot. They accommodated a family of 16 with ease. Thank you!

Manuel R.

Yelp
I saw this place, and thought it was perfect time for a snack, we sat and saw the pastries. We ordered a couples of hot chocolates thinking they would be great, since it's name is bread and chocolate. I had a chocolate croissant. Chocolate was from cheap instant powder, and croissant was a couple of days old, dry and hard. I do not recommend coming here at all. It seems like they don't back in house.

Adam C.

Yelp
Nothing really stands out at Bread & Chocolate other than the server staff were sweet. Bread & Chocolate has both an inside and outside dining area which is nice. I am not sure if the pastries quite justified my caloric intake in my quest for the perfect figure.

Aarti B.

Yelp
Great European cafe with scrumptious chocolate bread, apple toast, and mocha! With lots of decadent pastries to choose from, the fresh buttery flaky croissant was my favorite. While I'm not a fan of croissants, they are typically too dense or stale, this one was divine. The warm Chocolate Tea Bread was so rich and decadent, a slice of heaven! If you're a chocolate feign, definitely get it. the Chocolate Swirl Muffin was my least favorite from our feast! The Banana Foster french toast was sold out, but the Apple Cinnamon didn't disappoint! The Apple Cinnamon Toast made from soft Challah bread topped with apple compote was bursting with flavor. So delightfully rich in flavor that I could only tackle one of the 3 pieces. Will need to make more room for it next time! Definitely a dessert on its own. The Cafe Mocha was divine with house-made chocolate and no syrups. My hubby enjoyed his Cappuccino as well. Will definitely come back for the buttery croissant and hopefully get there early enough for the the Banana Foster french toast. Best of both worlds - Chocolate and Bread. I can never decide - so always get both!

Jack V.

Yelp
Amazing Iced Cappuccino! Made to perfection! Friendly service and great chocolate croissant. Highly recommend this place!

Jasmine S.

Yelp
Me and my BF were their for a mini getaway trip and stumbled upon bread and chocolate and it was very delicious they also had pastries (wish I took pictures of them to show) but they tasted delicious) staff was nice and welcoming.

Charlene E.

Yelp
I came here for an impromptu breakfast with my sister during my trip to D.C. This place is very cute but the food was nothing to talk about. They do have a wide variety of pastries and I made sure to get some cheesecake to go.

Tyler B.

Yelp
Great food. Great and friendly service! Great atmosphere too. Salmon Benedict

Jeffrey M.

Yelp
I got the French toast and it was... disappointing. Pretty sure it was Eggo French toast with Hershey's chocolate syrup, and a side of pudding that tasted suspiciously like the Jell-O brand chocolate pudding I used to have as a kid. On the one hand, comfortable childhood flavors! On the other hand, I could buy all the ingredients myself at Streets Market and just make it myself if someone lent me a toaster.

Abby L.

Yelp
SO GOOD! Wide selection of more "healthy" options but also some tasty treats. Not super cheap but so cute!

Cj J.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast, lovely atmosphere, and super friendly staff. highly recommend the omelet with salad!

Bill C.

Yelp
Service and ambiance are fine. The menu has good variety with delicious sounding items. We had Belgian waffle with bananas and chocolate and a bowl of muesli. The muesli was watery and tasteless. The Belgian waffle could not be cut with a fork ... or a knife! We then tried an orange cranberry muffin. One cranberry in the entire muffin and the muffin was stale. I doubt they are baking on premises. Not many customers for noontime on a sunny Sunday. That should have been the warning. Whoever created the menu must not have created the recipes for the items. All this place needs is a one day visit by a good food consultant to help them deliver on the promise of the menu. I hope they upgrade their food.

Jenny G.

Yelp
Such a great place for breakfast in DC! The whole staff was so kind and helpful. The pastries are delicious. Chocolate and banana waffle was also super tasty. Great coffee in cute mason jars. Love the ambiance and will definitely be back!

Nick L.

Yelp
This is an easy rating. The food is incredible and reasonably priced. The baked goods are remarkable. The service is incredibly responsive and fast. Go here.
