Find the Best Sourdough Bread in the Twin Cities - Eater Twin Cities

"Stillwater’s Bread Art bakes an old-world loaf that boasts a light sourdough taste made from a starter that’s over ten years old. The menu offers a wide variety of bread and on Mini Monday many are made in diminutive size, a great opportunity to try multiple flavors." - Eater Staff

Google
Every person interested in opening a bakery needs to visit Bread Art. Their offerings of breads, pastries and pies are delightful. Their prices make it easy to surprise family, friends and coworkers with a baked good. They definitely put the "art" in Bread Art. They will slice bread purchases in store. I recommend any of the butter braids, kolachies and croissants as they aren't overly sweet and they allow the flavor of the filling to be savoured. The prices are friendly and they offer discounted items.

Heather and her incredible staff at Bread Art made the most incredibly wedding cake we could have ever imagined. It was perfectly baked, absolutely delicious and breathtakingly beautiful. We have since purchased croissants, dog treats, and more cakes since. Worth the drive from the Twin Cities!

Google
Bread Art is such an amazing place! From the people to the pastries and baked goods, everything and everyone working there are high quality and incredible. Delicious cakes, pastries, bread, sandwiches, smoothies, coffee, and more!! Grateful for the owners and everything they do for the community. Check out this amazing Frog Small Cake we got! We accidentally smooshed him a little on the way home, but you can still see just how adorable it is!! And it was soooo delicious. Also we tried the new mangonada drink and it was super tasty!

Google
This bakery did an amazing job on our wedding cake!! We did sheet cakes from our venue for most of our guests, but we wanted a small cake to cut for the head table, preferably one without eggs since my husband is allergic. Heather was so helpful from the very start! She helped me choose what size cake would work best for my head table, as well as ordered flowers herself to put on it since my florist wasn’t able to. We chose a chocolate cake with raspberry filling and white buttercream. The cake was absolutely DELICIOUS and my husband and I are already talking about getting another one for our first anniversary!

Google
An amazing bakery with amazing owners. I drive 15 minutes past 6 bakeries to patronize this gem of a purveyor of baked goods. The Owner's Richard and Heather are awesome as well as their staff, especially the young lady on Saturday mornings. Just a great local bakery everyone should patronize.

Best Bakery in the Metro Area! From amazing cakes to the carmel rolls in the case each day! Best Hamburger Buns PERIOD!

Google
Really cute little bakery and cafe! If love to come in and sit down for a coffee and baked goods item sometime, but I usually just get something to go on my way through. They often have some unique items, and they have all sorts of different baked goods from sweet breads to basic breads, donuts to Danishes, and cakes to pies! I really like the selection, the location, and the feel of the place! The staff always is friendly and sociable. The ONLY reason I give it a 4-star instead of a 5 is because the prices of small items, (donuts, muffins, Danishes, rolls, etc.), seem a little higher than other bakeries that I typically enjoy going to.

Laura

Google
Always wonderful croissants & other pastries! Took home M&M cookies & were surprisingly underwhelmed by their flavor. I still gave them 5 stars because this is the first time I have ever found anything less than scrumptious!

Yelp
Bear claws are huge and the best. All their pastries are awesome. Wish I lived closer

Yelp
Cheese kolachy* or cheese danish for some. Dynamite good. Bakers at this place are above and beyond. Lots of good bread (tho I don't eat it but if looks are any indication!). Tons on individual goodies like donuts and sweet rolls. Cookies like Mom makes and 8x8 containers of bars to bring to a party or a get together. Parking is limited but worth scrounging around. Between a gas station and a liquor store on the east side of the street. Signage could be better but word of mouth seems to keep this place jumping. *A kolach is a type of sweet pastry that holds a portion of fruit surrounded by puffy dough. It is made from yeast dough and common flavors include fruit jam, cream cheese and poppy seeds. Originating as a semisweet pastry from Central Europe.

Yelp
About 10 years ago there was kolache factory in Brooklyn Center. Ever since they closed, we have been on the lookout for a place that makes Kolache's. We did recently see a report on the news about a bakery in Montgomery, MN and that place is on the list. But for now, we have a bakery that is only about a 10 minute drive. This could be dangerous. Bayport is already home to a couple really good restaurants in Wilder Scratch Kitchen and Bayport BBQ which DDD has visited. We arrived shortly after 8am and they were already busy. I have to say Bread Art was a little bigger place than we anticipated. They have a good selection of pastries including those kolache's but oh there's so much more. Fresh baked bread, cookies, bars, cakes, and other locally made items. We of course ordered quite a variety. Three different types of Kolache's, a scone, a maple pecan croissant, apple bread, lemon bread and some Italian focaccia like bread. Oh and some cookies. The kolache's were just as good as we hoped. The lemon was good, the blueberry was good and the mixed berry might have been our favorite. Both the apple bread and lemon bread were also good. The apple bread is going to make great French toast. The Italian focaccia like bread was a little dry but made great croutons. The cookies we felt were just ok but the maple pecan croissant was decadent. There was a maple filling that made that feel almost dessert like. On our way out we noticed some good looking sandwiches in the cooler by the door that looked really good. We look forward to making the short trip here again for some more kolache's, a maple pecan croissant and whatever else looks tasty.

Yelp
I have not really been much of a pastry fan, but after races, I get some unique cravings! I had been told to stop in after a race I had in Bayport and I feel like it changed my perspective on pastrys. I stopped in to this understated bakery and was welcomed by 2 delightful girls. They made recommendations on popular items (cinnamon and caramel roll, kolachys). I ended up getting a variety of the Kolachys and a caramel roll and a morning bun. I also ended up grabbing a bag of dog treats as well and a iced coffee. The morning bun was amazing! The caramel roll was perfection! I just wish it was closer, but OMG its amazing!

Yelp
Nice little place we found when searching for Bakeries in Stillwater, MN area. Limited seating but great selection of product. Ate a couple on sight with their fresh brew coffee which was both hot and flavor filled. Brought these two home

Richard H.

Yelp
Excellent bakery and they keep their products fresh but that means limited quantities. If you want something special or specific order in advance.

Yelp
I have stopped in here from time to time for a treat or nice loaf of specialty bread for a meal I was planning. They seem to make very dense and hearty bread products that lean towards the healthy side of breads. You can also find their products at a lot of the little specialty grocery stores like fresh and natural in Hudson. This is not the place to go if you like fluffy glazed sugar loaded fried things.

Yelp
Great authentic bakery and coffee shop. I came for a kolatchi (which are awesome). This place does catering and cakes as well. Pretty unassuming when you come in, but definitely with a trip.

Yelp
Bread Art bakes hands-down my favorite cake in town. We discovered them almost four years ago when we chose them to bake our wedding cake. After taste-testing all around town, nothing compared to their almond buttercream frosting. We've since ordered several more custom cakes and cupcake orders from them because or entire family loved our wedding cake so much. They are willing to go the extra mile and customize orders for their customers, their prices are very reasonable, and their products are outstanding. As a bonus, a trip to Bread Art means a lovely drive out to beautiful Bayport as well!

Yelp
I got a cupcake here and it was delicious. They had a fairly decent selection of cupcakes (both filled and unfilled- yay!) I love filled cupcakes. They also had a variety of breads and other bakery items. The lady working wasn't wearing gloves or anything when she took my cupcake out and bagged it, which was kinda gross. Also they didn't have one of those cute little plastic containers that places usually put cupcakes in so they don't get smashed or anything. Just in a bag. It was delicious anyways. Raspberry lemonade. It was beautiful and delicious.

Yelp
We had the Irish Soda Bread with our annual St. Patrick's Day Party Dinner. To say the least - it was fabulous!! Everybody commented on how "delicious" it was and where is this bakery as we all are in and around South St. Paul. Bread Art you have several new customers!!

Yelp
I stopped by and bought an eclair. $4.50 It tasted like wax. The puff pastry was thick, heavy and tasteless. The filling was thick like paste, tasteless. The chocolate, the same as above. Very disappointed !

Yelp
My brother and I came here after an afternoon of skating in the park. Nothing sounded better than a warm cup of apple cider at that moment. Unfortunately, the menu should have read "apple FLAVORED cider." It was undrinkable. I threw it away after one sip of the drink whose flavor resembled a melted jolly rancher. I also had a raspberry bear claw that looked truly beautiful. It ended up being dry and completely lacking raspberry flavor. Definitely a disappointment. Between that and the mediocre service, I won't be going back any time soon.

Yelp
I love this little bakery! Whenever I am in the area I make it a point to stop in. I have purchased cookies, bread, and my husband tried a coffee and said it was delicious. Don't drive too fast through town or you will miss it because it is easy to miss.

Yelp
We got an 8" cutting cake (almond cake w/raspberry filling & vanilla buttercream?) and an assortment of mini dessert bars (magic cookie, salted caramel & raspberry oat) cookies (snickerdoodle & molasses) & mini cupcakes (white w/raspberry buttercream, carrot cake w/cream cheese & marble w/dark chocolate ganache) for our wedding. All of our desserts were outstanding!! Our cutting cake was to die for, I can't wait to think of a reason to need another one! I returned the display stands today, which were free to use with our order and had to buy a pan salted caramel bars because they're that delicious!! The molasses cookies were super soft & the snickerdoodles went so fast I only got a half! Would definitely recommend Heather and Bread Art to anyone, they're super easy to work with and their baked goods are delicious!!

Kim P.

Yelp
Small wonderful bakery!! Everything we tried was good. All the kolachky (sp) were delicious. The bacon, sausage egg in bread roll was super good. Will come back!!

Yelp
Some co-workers and I were headed on a day trip and stopped here for some coffee and a treat before hitting the road. I had a latte with pumpkin spice syrup and a strawberry Kolachy (still don't know how to pronounce that) to go. I liked the latte but it could have been just a little more creamy. It was handmade in front of me and it was good and I would probably get it again. The kolachy was also tasty and made a great snack. I want to go back for coffee some time and I also want to try their sandwiches. Actually, I just want to try everything there. I love little coffee shops!

Yelp
So my review is for the cake! I've had the cakes from here and they were DELICIOUS!! The cakes were lovely and moist...and the frosting. Omg, I loved the frosting on the cakes! I'll be honest, we attended a birthday party and we were told they bought the cakes from here! Sooooo I'm perhaps not able to write the best review. But I do enjoy what I've tried so far! Can't wait to try a few more things from here- HIGH5

Yelp
After attending a wedding in January which featured Bread Art's AMAZING cupcakes (several flavors!!!), I knew I had to use them for my son's birthday party last week. I usually take the easy route and order my cake from the large-warehouse stores, and they are okay--they do the job. But this time, I ordered from Bread Art, and I was blown away! First of all, for the quality and the service, I was expecting a higher price... so when she told me how much it was, I was floored (it was comparably priced to what I had paid in the past). BUT THE FLAVOR and the TEXTURE (and the service) were so much better! We were feeding people all night long, and then we cut the cake. At first, people playfully groaned, because they were already full (and I was serving 3 inch pieces). But it was so good, that they were wolfing it down and coming back for more. I throw a lot of parties, and I've never seen people come back for seconds and thirds on birthday cake. My next event will be a wedding, and you can bet I'll be calling Bread Art!

Yelp
Loved this sweet little bakery! We had a variety of things: molasses cookie, mini mint chocolate cake, almond cookie, almond scone and they were all delish! The most amazing thing was the caramel pecan sticky bun. This tastes exactly like I remember them as a child. So much caramel, cinnamon and brown sugar, no skimping on any of the goodness. I also brought a coconut cream pie home and everyone said its the best they've ever had.

Yelp
I ordered some sourdough bread and a lemon curd cake for my birthday. The cake was very good; the lemon curd was nice and tangy, and the cake tasted like angel food cake. However, I was less than impressed by the bread (with a name like Bread Art I expected it to be good!) The sourdough was completely crusted by a THICK layer of flour. It had very weird looking wrinkles and tasted nothing like sourdough. Properly proofed and handled bread should not have wrinkles. I was very disappointed by the lack of crust. I don't think anybody wants to chew plain flour. I wanted this bread in place of a gift for my birthday, and was extremely disappointed.

Yelp
Very delicious breads and pastries. Have tried nearly all the large kolachy flavors (prune?!) and along with the rolls and turnovers, everything was fresh and flavorful. The cherry turnover has an amazing pie crust flavor and texture. Raspberry oat bars are a fav. Can pre-order boxes for workplace morning mtgs- very well received.

Elise T.

Yelp
Yummmmm. Been coming here since I was a kid. Best bear claws ever. Very friendly staff and a small town vibe that I just love. Would recommend to a friend and I have.

Yelp
On my way in to Stillwater, I spot a building with the sign liquor store and next to it Bread Art. After my double take I make a note to stop in, just to see if it really existed. When I get there there's more inside than you imagine. They pretty much have everything. Molly took great care of me. After she sliced some ww bread, I start looking in the glass displays. After I'll take that, that, and that, which ended up being a carrot cake bar, cream cheese kolachy, and a mini eclair, I reach the register and next to it are more baked items. Mostly the cupcakes and coffee cakes. She asked if there was anything else I needed after we've been chatting the whole time, I told her I was going to a funeral and need a card. She showed me the most beautiful cards I've ever seen. On my way out what do I see but another display of sandwich and dessert bread. The place was filling up by then, but whenever I make a stop to Stillwater, I'll stop here. They have a bread punch card, so that's a good incentive.

Colleen R.

Yelp
I so want to like this place! The cookies are dry, the cupcakes have a funny flavor and never seem to be fresh, and the staff are often rude, if not indifferent. I've had a few good cakes out of the case, however decorating/making custom cakes isn't a strong suit (i.e., the cake split apart on the ride home (3 blocks). The saving grace is the morning bun...and their pies. And be prepared to pay for water.

Yelp
Bread Art has become our go to bakery most Sunday's. We hit them on the way home from church and are never disappointed. A wide variety of pastries and breads. The staff is attentive and helpful. A real gift to the Bayport city center area.

Michelle A.

Yelp
Wonderful wedding cakes! We had a great experience from the tasting to the actual wedding cake. Heather was awesome and so helpful. The cake was delicious and personalized for us. They were creative, flexible and affordable. We have also gone to this bakery for cupcakes and they are delicious- highly recommend a vanilla cupcake with buttercream frosting. Great customer service and tasty treats!

Theresa M.

Yelp
Bread Art catered our wedding with cupcakes and a small wedding cake. The chocolate cupcakes were especially good as they were not overly sweet. We have vanilla cake filled with raspberry jelly and topped with almond buttercream cupcakes, as well. As an added bonus Heather was great to work with and had very affordable prices! She was flexible for set up time and was able to accommodate when I switched up the day of timing the day before our wedding. We will be back!

Catherine H.

Yelp
Amazing pastries and good prices! My favorite pastry is the cherry turnover. It is a great place to go over the weekend with friends or your family.

Aaron O.

Yelp
Great coffee and selection of pastries. I've stopped in many times before work for a latte. The people are great also This is not Big Box coffee chain, and shouldn't be. It's real. They have a huge selection of pies, breads and baked goods. I'll be back soon to try more.

Yelp
Rather disappointed picked up a caramel roll and blueberry turnover also dinner knots rolls the turnover was pretty good but rolls and caramel roll very dry....didnt finish ether.

Yelp
Bread Art's fruit pies are fabulous. I bring them to events and always get rave reviews. I like that their pieces are delicious yet not overly sweet, and that there is plenty of fruit in the filling. The crusts are also terrific. Their other bakery items and breads are good, but the triple berry pie and others are out of this world.

renee w.

Yelp
Owner is extremely rude. I am not basing that on one visit either. The last time that I was in, I asked to speak with her and the gal went to check. She said that the owner was too busy getting the deliveries ready and didn't have time. The staff seems like they are being bothered when you ask them a question so I won't be going back there. it's messy in there anyway. The reason that I like Bread Art at all is for the kolaches. They are hard to find but they are my favorite bakery item. I had wanted to comment that I had purchased some weeks prior that ended up being dry and hard. I guess they don't care. I won't be back again.

Marie J.

Yelp
Bread, rolls, scones, chocolate croissants, sweet rolls, cookies, sweet bread, tarts, popovers, fruit pies, cakes, pies and more all make fresh and from scratch and delicious. How do you choose only a few things? So good!!

Miles K.

Yelp
I love the bakery items and so do my coworkers. Unfortunately most of the time I deal with the same worker early in the morning (thin woman in her late 40's?) and its like I am a total inconvenience to her. If the food wasn't so great I would have stopped going back a long time ago. I bet I have spent over $1000.00 there over the years between wedding cakes and buying items for work its too bad I don't feel like my business is appreciated. I would probably go there even more often if there was better service.

Linda P.

Yelp
I love this place. When my father was dying (he was in kidney failure and given less than a month to live) all he wanted to eat was caramel rolls from Bread Art. They reminded him of his mother's caramel rolls. He went on to live another 3 years and we think it is mostly due to these rolls which Bread Art kindly delivered to his door twice a week. For his 80th birthday they made a giant pan of caramel rolls and spelled HAPPY 80th BIRTHDAY out in pecans on the top. They made a camouflage cake for me decorated with green army men. Their bread and pies are delicious. They have nitro iced coffee!!--that iced coffee that comes in a keg and has those little tiny tiny bubbles like a dark beer. It's so good. They have ready-made sandwiches in a case that have more than once saved my bacon when relatives suddenly show up. There's great variety and the prices are good. And everything is really delicious. I live 2000 miles away from this place and between visiting family in MN and ordering things for delivery I buy more from Bread art than any other bakery anywhere.

Carl M.

Yelp
I have purchased many of their various types of bread in the last 8 years, and have enjoyed ALL of it! I've purchased a few of their pies and cakes over the years, and they have been fabulous as well. If you ask me, Bread Art is a Gold Mine when it comes to Bakeries :-) I tell everyone I know that "Bread Art is the best bakery in the world!" :-)

Yelp
We've been going to this place for a loooong time-- at least 5 years. And I wish I could tell you that I love it. I usually do love it, but they are so hit and miss. When they are doing it right, it's seriously amazing! Soft and perfect croissants (try the chocolate hazelnut ones-- sometimes they are still warm and the chocolate is melting...so dang good!), decadent caramel rolls, perfectly moist and satisfying muffins. However, about every 3rd-4th time I go there, I get a treat that tastes as if it's day old. Crusty, dry croissants. Caramel rolls that are so hard you literally can't bite through (or cut with a knife) the caramel. Crusty muffins with no taste. Now, the bread, that's always good. The white cake with almond- always good. And heck, if we're really reviewing it, my doggie has never complained about the doggie treats we sometimes bring home for her. I will say that lately, they've been on a much better streak. It's probably been about 2 months since I've had a day-old tasting item, but I'm certain it will happen again, it always does. They are worth a stop though. Choose carefully-- and maybe ask for what's still warm... or the freshest... maybe that's what I've been doing wrong all these years...

Melissa E.

Yelp
We used Bread Art as our wedding cake vendor. Heather can create anything you can dream up, she was very organized, and easy to work with. It was delicious - and her prices are the most reasonable we could find. Her cake and frosting are homemade, moist, and fluffy...we had two types a triple chocolate (chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, and chocolate buttercream) and a white cake with amaretto mousse, and almond butter cream. Our display cake was perfect and we still have the top layer to eat on our anniversary. I recommend Bread Art to anyone!

Dixie B.

Yelp
Last Christmas, I called to order 3 cakes for our Office Christmas party. I had unusual designs in mind. The owner spent about 30 minutes on the phone, being very honest about what she could and could not do. One cake was carrot, one was 3 different layers, each a different flavor, and the 3rd was white cake. She called me at 10:30 (still at work, working on my order so it would be fresh) to make sure everything was right. I picked the cakes up a couple of hours before the party. They were beautiful beyond belief. One of the cakes was a chimney with Santa boots sticking out. She had gone to SEVERAL different stores to get EXACTLY what I wanted. But, we still hadn't tasted them. That night, we cut into the cakes...WOW! The cakes were moist, perfectly baked, and held together beautifully from cake to plate, but it was the icing that wowed the crowd! I saw people going back 2 and three times after our HUGE buffet. I will be going back this year! Thank you for taking the time and care to make my first party in our new house, nothing short of delicious!
