A Guide to Detroit’s Best Delis - Eater Detroit

"Metro Detroit deli chain Bread Basket specializes in big sandwiches stuffed with up to a pound of deli meat. Patrons can also find items here like corned beef egg rolls, Reuben french fries, and Dr. Brown’s sodas. While most locations are geared towards carryout, some Bread Baskets offer dine-in seating, too." - Brenna Houck

Ordered the corn beef with pastrami. The meat was delicious, however I wanted rye bread and got toasted white.(chalk it up to they were probably really busy)which I'm not fan. The Cole slaw wasn't happening for me, lacked flavor. All in all, I'd order from bread basket again. Absolutely! Coming from New Jersey, the king of Jewish deli's, I'm very bias since I've had the best of New Jersey, and New York delis. The sandwich was very good! Finally found something decent to eat since being in Detroit.

This place has the baddest sandwiches out of anyone in the game. Great service and better people! They also cater and have a variety of options, from their sides to their desserts they do it all! Emilio and his team provide the best possible experience!

I should have made this review years ago... I used to be in the area regularly, and always knew this Bread Basket location as one of the jewels of the franchise. With covid in 2020, work took me away from the area. I stopped in today and was thrilled to see it's now better than ever. The location now also houses "Seaviche," which serves tacos and bowls, and it's all made with the same exacting quality I've come to trust from this location. I was able to sample a number of menu offerings, and was happily surprised by each bite. Everything is made in house and with care (get some fresh made tortilla chips!) Whether you want an old school corned beef, or a wonderfully flavored taco, this place is worth a stop. I will now be going out of my way to stop in more often! (Pictured is a "Union" pastrami and corned beef with sauerkraut added)

Google
Got the Reuben with fries fries tasted like seafood. The Reuben sandwich was the worst Reuben I’ve ever had the corn beef was way too fatty.

Google
I ordered 3 sandwiches. Spent 53 dollars. The pastrami, although very tasty, was expensive. 18 dollars alone. There was an extra charge to grill the bread. Upcharge for an onion roll. Another upcharge for swiss. 18 FOR A SANDWICH????? No fries or drink???? The cheesteak from this restaurant was the worst tasting sandwich in the history of my life eating cheesteaks. Last sandwich was a 17 and 1/2. Mediocre at best. Avoiding this place is better for my pockets and better for my health.

Google
The best corn beef in town. Love it like it gotta have it. The food and atmosphere is everything.

Google
Every time I stepped inside the restaurant there was never anything that kept me waiting on food for more than thirty minutes or ever saw the restaurant's uncleaned environment. The one thing that is not so good will be their tight parking lot especially near the downtown area.

Google
Ordered an 17 1/2 sandwich that cost I believe about $15. The sandwich was tasteless. The cornbread had no favor or the dressing. It's a thumbs down for me. Service was good

Yelp
Had to come to town for a quick turnaround and stayed near this place. Truly amazing sandwiches, soups, and baked goods. Prices are fair and the customer service is amazing. Not to mention the Groovin music.

Yelp
Bread Basket Deli did not disappoint!! I heard that they have the best Corn Beef sandwich anywhere, and I must agree that it was the best I've ever eaten. Granted I have only eaten Corn Beef sandwiches in less than a dozen places my entire life. Bread Basket Deli has a number of locations in the Detroit area and neighboring cities. It was on my wish list to visit one of them, and this was the closest one to us. We visited when Covid restrictions were still very strict. Sadly, the dining area was closed. Happily, the drive-thru window was open. There were only a half dozen cars ahead of us. Wifey called the restaurant and placed our order. We picked it up at the window about 20 minutes later. The woman who assisted us was awesome!! She was so welcoming, friendly, and helpful!! As I mentioned earlier, their Corn Beef sandwich was the BEST!! Seriously, it was one of the best sandwiches that I have ever eaten. My wife and I shared it because it was quite large. She thought it was delicious as well. All the ingredients that made up that sandwich went so well together! For dessert, we shared their Strawberry cheesecake. It was yummy too! Very happy that Bread Basket Deli met my expectations!! They will now be a regular destination for us everytime we visit family in the Detroit area.

Yelp
There is a reason for Bread Basket Deli 5 star after all these years!! Ordered 5 sandwiches and matzah ball soup! Everyone loved and raved as we ate every last bite!! Very cool to receive an old dill and new dill for each sandwich with more than the 5 and extra bonus to receive a bunch of bread ends to make my leftovers as I was very satisfied with half a sandwich. Pastrami and corned beef United was amazing!! Def worth enjoying again!!!

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Best matzo ball soup I've found in downtown! When I ordered online, the restaurant even called to make sure to make adjustments as I'd like for items they didn't have.

Yelp
The food was great the customer service was fine I ordered through portal and the lady behind the counter kept demanding to see my app...

Yelp
First time trying this place. The Turkey Club was off the chain. Didn't even need to cheese actually. Highly recommend

Yelp
Usually, when I'm visiting home from D.C. I can't wait to get Bread Basket which is primo for a former Detroit foodie, except this particular experience through DoorDash was abysmal enough for me to write a review. I ordered through the app, drive 20 minutes, picked up the order, got home - they are missing an entire sandwich and prepared one incorrectly. They said they tried to call but I received no incoming calls on the 20 minute drive home or messages through the app. I drive all the way back, they insist on TAKING THE IMPROPERPLY MADE SANDWICH BACK, and for our trouble still charged us $3.05 for the second fountain drink we bought since the first we drank on the 20 minute drive back to get the correct order. No apology - just told us to call if we wanted our order right next time. Really surprised about this crappy customer service from a metro-Detroit staple.

Yelp
Haven't eaten at a Bread Basket since '98. Was prepared to be disappointed, but was pleasantly surprised. They still make pastrami & corn beef like they used to! Delicious, melts in your mouth the way it should! Friendly employees. Can't get sandwiches like this in Kentucky.

Yelp
I don't go here often for corned beef anymore, but I love their bagel breakfast sandwiches!! So frikkin tasty. Call ahead, place your order, and it'll be ready for pick up in drive thru when you make it. Oh yea - Mom loves their pound cake also.

Charlotte G.

Yelp
Louie's on Mack is the same price +/- and is MUCH better. The pastrami sandwich at BB was tough and not very flavorful. Won't return.

Yelp
Great sandwich Location does matter. Owners and workers are so pleasant. Mmmm. I am hungry

Yelp
Close to Detroit's old school corn beef sandwiches ie Esquire Deli and Fofo's. I will order from them again.

Yelp
I just waited in line for 20 minutes to order a bowl of soup. The woman refused to serve me thru the drive thru because I did not phone ahead an order. It was a bowl of soup. I asked if she had soup ready, she said yes but refused to sell it. I will not go back, you should not either. Poor service especially during our crisis should not be standard business practices.

Yelp
Should have followed my gut and went to Hygrade Deli where I know everything would have been ok. I was in there for a total of 30 mins (8 of which I won't hold against them, due to the lady in front of me not knowing exactly what she wanted to order ....) just for one sandwich and an order of fries to go. 2 people who ordered behind me got their food before I did. Fries were WAY over-salted, and both the sandwich (a "17 & 1/2 [corned beef and cole slaw]) and fries were both cold. I also asked for the cole slaw on the side, and while it was not on the sandwich, it was nowhere to be seen in my bag upon opening it after arriving back to my destination which was less than an eight minute drive away. ALWAYS FOLLOW YOUR FIRST INSTINCT !!!

Yelp
The best sandwich and soups in all of Detroit! I had the Corned Beef sandwich and it is so tasty and tender. The hot soup was awesome lots of chicken breast. Good prices. Excellent service and very clean.

Yelp
I've been to this place several times without a problem I bought two sandwiches yesterday and they were awful! I asked for an onion roll the bread was so dry which made the corn beef so dry it was awful can't go back anymore anymore

Yelp
Food was ok Service left a lot to be desired. Ordered and after 15 minutes, checked to see what the status was and it was sitting there for who knows how long. No apologies for not letting me know it was ready. Definitely will not be back.

Yelp
We decided to check out the downtown location of Bread Basket. We were pleasantly greeted by the young lady at the cash register, who answered our questions and gave us time to look over the menu. The menu has a lot more offerings then I remember from the Woodward location. My husband ordered the regular corned beef. When they asked if he wanted cheese he said no. I told the young lady they could just put it on my sandwich. I then ordered the Philly cheese steak with a few modifications. As the young lady was talking about having the cheese put on my sandwich, the boss's wife interjected saying, "If she wants extra cheese she has to pay for it!' First of all, how complicated is it to put his cheese on my sandwich that is being made at the same time. Secondly, I could have sworn that the cheese was paid for with his sandwich. Anyway on to the food. The wait was a little long. However, the young ladies who were preparing the food were very pleasant. She double-checked the modifications on my sandwich twice while preparing it. I appreciate her wanting to get it right the first time and she did! The Philly cheesesteak was really yummy! The corned beef sandwich was also good, but my husband thought it was a little small for the $10 price, when comparing it to the size of sandwich you used to get on Woodward. But hey, it's downtown with downtown pricing. I would go again, but I tell my husband to have his cheese put on the side.

Yelp
While I love the brand name this store is taking me a while to get used to. To be honest I order the exact sandwich every time and at any of the other stores. This store trends more on the side of inconsistency when it comes to getting a corned beef sandwich. The first visit was great. The store was new and everything was cooked to spec. This visit was good as well. But the previous visits, I won't even rate the experience because the food was just not right. But I will not give up on them and pray that the consistence at this particular store comes up to par with the others that I visit

Yelp
Ordered online for pick up. Service was friendly and efficient. Food was ready and still warm. The corned beef trumps the pastrami no doubt. But both were satisfying. So much more to try. Perhaps the store just needed some time to find their groove. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
My favorite take out Corned Beef sandwich in Detroit area. Prices are around $12 but you get a hefty sandwich.

Yelp
Horrible, horrible customer service. Acknowledged they forgot to package part of my order and refused to refund me. I called and was basically laughed at that I wanted a refund over one thing being wrong. The food sucks. The service is even worse. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Yelp
Decided to try this place on our way to belle Ile and was very impressed with quality and service. I'd go back again for sure!

Yelp
The Bread Basket is pretty good. Sandwiches are nice and healthy with a great taste. The corned beef market in Detroit is crowded. With places like Lou's and Motor City Casino, it's hard to shine with a corned beef. The Bread Basket has a name in Detroit that has withstood the test of time.

Yelp
Hands down the best lunch in Detroit. Bread Basket is good everywhere, but this location specifically has mouthwateringly delicious sandwiches. I work down the street and used them for catering, and the service from the staff was excellent, and food was top-notch. I will always recommend this place for lunch, dinner or catering!

Katherine C.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! The Reuben was as good as I remembered it being. The chicken salad was yummy too! Very generous portions.

Tiffany J.

Yelp
The fattiest sandwich I ever had from Bread Basket. I have been to Bread Basket about 10 times in my life, the one on Jefferson in Detroit I've been to about 5 times. Today my sandwich was mostly fat or meat that I could not chew. I am disappointed.

Adrian S.

Yelp
I ordered a corn beef on rye, and I was given corn fat on rye. Chewy and inedible, I had to throw the $10 sandwich away. Terrible food and service. One star is the lowest I could rate.

Calvin J.

Yelp
I've had a lot of corned beef and this was definitely up there with the best. Service was on point and the store was nice and clean. I'll be back.
