The Top 10 Detroit Meals Author Aaron Foley Is Missing Right Now | Eater Detroit

"For Detroiters, corned beef isn’t just a once-a-year St. Patrick’s Day thing, and at Bread Basket Deli the corned beef sandwich still surprises me every time: the way the mustard hits, how tightly packed the meat is, the balance that keeps it tender without too much salt, and — when the bun doesn’t get soggy — the whole thing comes together perfectly." - Aaron Foley

Google
Service was great and it was the best corned beef sandwich I’ve had! I recommend the 17 1/2.

Google
Basically a carry out place. GREAT food and service. They do have tables, but not the greatest atmosphere. The food is worth the trip. They are located next to Kroger at the corner of Southfield and Dix.

Google
HANDS DOWN THE BEST REUBEN EVERRR!!! Too many homemade in-house items to count... The food tastes like Grandma and Grandpa's home cooking! The Rye bread is PHENOMENAL!!! SEEDLESS SOURDOUGH RYE TO BE EXACT... There's also an option to get an onion roll, kaiser roll, whole wheat or white. And make sure you try the "17 and a half!" Tip: Ask for it to be grilled!!! YUMMY!!! There are a bunch of side items choices with Sweet Potato fries as an option! Corned Beef Egg Rolls and other options including dessert egg rolls!!! 🤤 If you like Gyros... LOOK NO FURTHER!!! The restaurant is very clean and the service makes you feel like you're family! Don't miss an opportunity to stop in... You won't regret it!!!

Google
I read a few reviews that complained about the price here. Well what do you expect? Cost has gone up on everything. That being said the sandwiches here are top notch and the portions are huge. So you definitely get your money's worth. I enjoyed it so much I'll be back in a few days.

Google
Best Reuben I ever had in my life the corned beef and sauerkraut were so good and fresh, the swiss cheese was melted, bread very delicious. Tried matzo ball soup for the first time and loved it, the corned beef egg rolls were excellent and the service was amazing very friendly, only waited about 5 minutes for my food. Definitely will be back♥️

Google
So for a turkey club and a gyro it was almost $30 just for the sandwiches. The turkey club was mine, and it wasn't worth it. For a sandwich that expensive, I expected it to come on in house baked bread, or something different than a plain Walmart loaf. There was no cheese on it, and it looked like 1 pitiful piece of bacon ripped up and put on it. Really disappointed. My wife got the gyro. Said it was ok, sauce a little salty. But there's room for improvement. Staff was nice enough

Google
Not only is it amazing corned beef, but the employees are always great, kind and helpful. Was a great dinner enjoying a big corned beef sandwich with an old friend and a doc brown cream soda. Look forward to my next visit!

Miss Jada had a good service attitude on New Year's Eve for December the 31st 2025 I was eating at 1:38 in the evening hopefully I like the food and hopefully y'all be good to the public people that's disabled veterans and everybody else have a wonderful holiday

Yelp
My best bud has been recommending this place every time I make my trip to Michigan. This time we actually stopped in and I'm telling you it was freckin great! I had the best Rueben I have ever had! The toasted rye bread (highly recommended) was the key to this sandwich. The corn beef was soft, tender, flavorful along with just the right amount of dressing. Like everything nowadays it was a little pricey but well worth it! Shout out to the counter lady who was patient with us and recommended toasting the bread! I'm definitely going to make it one of my Michigan food stops next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Hubby reluctantly took me here to get a Ruben I'd been craving. His first experience was a dry pastrami sandwich, granted that was many years prior. Anyway, stopped and ordered pastrami on kaiser with Swiss and a Ruben on pumpernickel. Well, I was happy, craving met and hubby was feeling okay about his sandwich. I think we will visit again. We both had regular sandwiches..$15 (6oz)each and an up charge for Kaiser. Think next time we'll order original-$18 (8 or more oz I think).

Becky M.

Yelp
My sandwich cost $26 so I was expecting a great lunch. The bread was hard. The corned beef was ice cold and if I was at a restaurant, I would've sent it back. I have eaten here before and it was really good, but not this time. I wouldn't recommend this for anyone & they are to expensive

Brelen W.

Yelp
Terrible these people close whenever they feel like it. No kind of professional business hours at all. Do not come here without calling to see if they are open first. You have been warned. Food is pretty good when you can get it.

Ryan S.

Yelp
This is my second time coming to this location and the second time my food has been ice cold upon returning home and I live 5 minutes away. I ordered 3 corned beef sandwiches with lean corned beef and paid 60 dollars for my order only to come home to the meat being cold and having to heat it up myself when I just pulled off from there no less than 5 minutes ago. I would give this place 0 stars or even negative because this isn't the first time but it will be the last time I visit this location.

Shay S.

Yelp
if I could give zero stars I would have. bread basket or at least this location has fell off. the corn beef sandwich was absolutely HORRIBLE. the onion was so dry and too thick asked for grill and it wasn't. I got fries and the fries were not fresh at all. I'll stay with other corn beef places this was not IT!!!

Betty V.

Yelp
Service the lady at window I forgot her name. Pleasant and my Grilled Corned Beef Sandwich was Delicious. I frequent this location and I have always been satisfied. Today's sandwich wanted me to get another. Little distance.

Gable I.

Yelp
I have been to this location for my self and others about 10 times and on each trip the corned beef , and Pastrami sandwiches on rye have been good mind you the corned beef and pastrami sandwiches they used to make years age where much better but it's not the restaurants fault it the processing plants that process the corned beef and pastrami briskets they don't make them like they used to so this is what we get also this location and the Woodward locations are better than all the other breadbasket delis combined keep the good sandwiches coming and it would be nice to have the original rye bread with the hard crusts as a bread choice

Yelp
Yum. I think it's tastier here than my usual BB in Livonia. We swung in for a to go. There is no dine in as of June 2022. They were confused by my old school style request for the 17 1/2 but figured it all out quickly. Super friendly staff and speedy order fulfillment The sandwiches were super juicy meat, both the corned beef and the pastrami. Not too fatty but not dried out lean either. The slaw here is more saucy/ messy and I am a fan. I added extra russian too and they gave it to me, which is always a plus in my book. I want a three napkin experience. I got a slew of pickles plus an extra new pickle so I was in pickle heaven for a few days. Bless them. I think I have a new go to Bread Basket.

Yelp
Note from first opening Yelp deleted hundreds of my reviews. WOW Jumbo sandwich's and steak sub. I've heard of this place and now the first day opened in Lincoln Park just had to try it. I really wanted the corned beef and have had enough from St Paddy's Day so I had a Beef Tongue sandwich on amazing rye bread,,that's beef tongue hot and was so damn good and tender. The wife had the mega Philly steak sub which is bigger that Joey's Famous Death by Cheese-steak, both are now favorites of ours; along with the Matza Ball soup a first for me. I'll be sure to try more of the super selection soon. Go to Valpak and print out the coupon, you'll need it a bit on the pricey side but well worth it. I met the owner who was proud to tell me they serve many local products Topor's pickles, Faygo,Better Made chips and Sy Gingberg's meats. I really excited to have them in Lincoln Park, so give them a try. YUMMY

Jillian R.

Yelp
I ordered a ham + provolone slider with mayo, fries and a Pepsi! Everything was FANTASTIC! This was my first time ordering here and it will not be my last! The slider was so fresh, the fries-crispy, and the pickles were YUM! I can't wait to order from here again!

Yelp
Folks, welcome to a REAL delicatessen. The meat is sliced fresh to order, the bread is oven baked and the sandwiches are stacked high with corned beef, Turkey, or whatever fits your taste. You can order the meat lean, fatty, center cut, steamed, grilled, however you want it! THIS is quality. THIS is what old school deli and dining is all about. Sure, the prices are more than McDonalds. Why wouldn't they be? This is the top of the line. In a world where a vegetarian Whopper and fries cost $10 and a White Castle cheeseburger costs over $1, the prices at Bread Basket are a cheap in comparison to size and quality. The staff is super nice, the establishment is always clean and our food is always made to order. No, it's not the best place for a first date, but the Corned Beef is phenomenal! No wonder why they win awards for it every year! The Cheese steak is probably the best I've ever had!. The corned beef and steak Egg Rolls are heavenly! Dont let the price deter you. You truly get what you pay for! You wouldnt expect to buy a Lamborghini for the price of a Mustang, and this is no different! I highly recommend Bread Basket!

Yelp
Have always gone to the original in Oak Park. Just got to town and decided to stop. Hubby had pastrami on rye, extra size. I had the 17 1/2, corned beef with Swiss, Russian dressing and cole slaw on rye. Both sandwiches were ok. The meats were a bit dry. The rye bread was lacking rye taste no seeds. We won't be back will go the original next time.

Yolande R.

Yelp
I love this place, I've been going for many years and I'm never disappointed, everything is always fresh and yummy!!!!

Yelp
After trying Bread Basket Deli for the first time, I had to leave a review. Voted "The Best Deli" by MetroTimes, I can see the attraction. Initially I was taken aback by a $10 sandwich (the 6 oz. 17-1/2" is what I got) and the creamy Macaroni salad was well worth the upgrade from fries. The bread and coleslaw on the well-over 6 oz. of beautiful corned beef was amazing. The pickles even tasted homemade. Not over seasoned. Definitely 5-stars for Downriver!
google avatar

Kimberly P.

Yelp
My favorite sandwich is always the BEST!! Corn beef and Pastrami on a grilled pumpernickel with mustard and Russian dressing... let's not forget the old dill!!!
google avatar

Craig S.

Yelp
I was craving a Cheese steak. Thought I'd give it a try. My companion got a corned-beef sandwhich combo. Total with tax came to $20. Good food, nice customer service, would go again.
google avatar

Shenita W.

Yelp
I love this location, they prepare the sandwiches the old fashion way, they are so good. Whenever I am on that side of town I pick a few up to take home with me.
google avatar

Brian P.

Yelp
Their food is always excellent although a little pricy. I was however disappointed in my last visit. Currently the drive through is the only thing open even though COVID restrictions have been lifted. I placed my order and showed up five minutes before I was told it was ready. I was stuck waiting in the drive-through line behind a truck for 15 minutes while my food got cold and I was not able to go inside and simply get my food myself. normally this is one of my favorite places to eat but I do not think I will be returning here until they open the dining room again. It's very frustrating to pay $15 for a sandwich that's cold by the time you get it because you were stuck waiting behind one vehicle in the drive-through.

Yelp
A solid 3 out of 5 The menu is overwhelming to say the least. SO much to choose from! The 17 1/2 is really good...but if I'm being honest it was not extraordinarily spectacular. We pass this place almost every day but never felt compelled enough to try it. Seen it featured on "Tasty Tuesday" on the news and everyone was ranting and raving about it so we figured we'd give it a shot. I personally think it would be better if the corned beef was served a little hotter and the bread was toasted. Don't get me wrong, the meat and coleslaw was very good...I guess I was just expecting something undeniably and ridiculously great. I also have a really hard time not comparing every deli to my favorite place, Mudgies. In my eyes, there is no greater deli lol. A little expensive, but the portions are really big. I still have half of my sandwich left for lunch today! The fries were....fries, and the mac and cheese bites were good. We really wanted to try to the steak and cheese egg rolls, but they said they were out. If we ever have an immediate craving for some good corned beef, I'm sure we'll be back!

Danielle H.

Yelp
Spend $63 dollars for 3 Reg sandwich combs & 3 egg rolls. Sandwiches were empty as they are usually full and we asked for the slaw to be on the side which we paid for and was missing from the bag. Fries were completely burnt and dried out. Egg rolls were empty. Called the restaurant to be told that they can replace the fries and slaw. Not that she can replace the entire meal after telling her I live 25 minutes away. Very disappointed, I brought family from out of state there for the best corned beef which was far from the best. Could of ate better at a fast food place especially for the price we paid. Would not recommend this location!
google avatar

Cecil H.

Yelp
Overall my sandwich (the bb special) wasn't bad the meat just wasn't warm enough for my liking and a little too much sauce

Désirée K.

Yelp
Very fatty corn beef and very crumbly onion roll discusting have been here many times and was good but how do you serve such slop I mean some one makes the sandwich are they blind.

Yelp
If I could give this location one star I would. Whenever I come home to the D I always make a Bread Basket stop before leaving. I've always loved Bread Basket. Even got my first job there (Greenfield location) as a teenager. However this location fully disappointed me today. My husband and I stopped in the way back to NC and went through the drive thru. It was 6:49 pm on Sunday. The window was open, the sign that says open was on and the sign on the window stated that 8 pm was the close time. When the lady finally approached the window, she just stared at us in a puzzled way and said "we're closed" and walked the hell off!!!!! WTF?!!!! Needless to say, I will never return to this shit bag location again. I urge you all to skip it too!

Traci S.

Yelp
My $14 triple decker Turkey bacon club literally had one tiny piece of bacon. I understand bacon is expensive, but so is this sandwich. There are many better options that are less expensive than this place.

Yelp
Very nice staff 1 attire coming to the Southgate loc loved the fast service and food was good

Yelp
Ordered. Pastrami and Corned Beef Sandwich from here today. It's my first time at this location but haven't eaten Breadbasket in a long long time. This location I like the service was quick and they had lots of options. I was there around 1 pm on a Friday. The place is very clean I didn't eat there but they have a good amount of seating and looks like you get free refills as you fill your own cups. My sandwich was delicious maybe a tad dry but I was cool with that seeing I ordered mines to go plus I shopped at the Kroger in the same parking lot and my sandwich was just fine once I got home a hour later. The prices may be high to some but considering corned beef and pastrami is high no matter where you go I would say the prices are right along with all the other deli's. If you can't handle the prices you might wanna go to a deli counter somewhere like Kroger's or Kowalski or something to get your meat then buy your bread and cheese and make your own . Prices are high every where either you wanna eat at their place or you don't! I look forward to going back, their menu is pretty big and they have egg rolls and fish and chicken strips chicken sandwiches and a variety of Salads
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
A little pricey but top notch quality and a large quantity! I'd drive far and pay higher amount for good food. #17 1/2 ...NOT YOUR REGULAR CORNEDBEEF SANDWICH. Great service and a convenient drive up window for pick up if you order ahead.
google avatar

Patrick V.

Yelp
Oh my gosh. I have been coming to the Detroit area for the past three months and this is easily the BEST place I have eaten, I will definitely be coming back whenever I am in the area and look forward to eating at the other locations over time. The Reuben is absolutely perfect. If this place hasn't been on a TV show yet, then it should be! People are very nice and I have no complaints about the cost.
google avatar

Phil S.

Yelp
Food makes wait worth it, but the girls working front counter need some lessons in manners very rude and snotty attitudes will turn people off
google avatar

Vince N.

Yelp
Compared to other Bread Baskets that I have eaten at, this one needs some work. The CB had a good flavor, but was extremely dry, and falling apart to easily. Will retry in a couple weeks, and hopefully they get it right. Maybe they need to leave some fat on for moisture. It was really lean CB. My parents had the same problem a few days after my experience. P.S. the parking lot is pretty small, sometimes it is hard to get in and out of.
google avatar

Kari C.

Yelp
This Bread Basket location recently opened. I had eaten at other locations in the past and they definitely are well known for their corned beef, I won't deny that. However, if you're going there for anything else besides corned beef, you may be slightly disappointed. Last weekend my husband and I went to this location. He ordered a ham and cheese sandwich, while I ordered the turkey club. While my husband's sandwich was big, it wasn't at all as large as we had imagined it to be (when compared to their notorious corned beef) and it definitely was not worth the money we paid for it. My turkey club was sad looking. The bacon was soggy and almost didn't look completely cooked. The mayonnaise was piled on so thick that the bread ripped at every attempt to eat it, thus creating nothing but a big mess. I felt like I could have made a better quality sandwich at home. This location is also not the greatest. Parking is difficult at best and is located at a very busy intersection. If you're in the mood for corned beef, this is the place to go. If not, go elsewhere.
google avatar

Yelp
Ya I'm with the other review. People don't get out much to buy good food. This place we just stumbled on. We are traveling Had to go to Walgreens across st for some cold medicine. We luckily saw the pictures in the window as we turned. See food .. Let's try THAT place! So on a whim we pulled in. We jokingly asked the girl behind the counter if the food looks like the pictures. Ha ha so we ordered a 17 1/2 for him and I wanted a Ruben. She asked me what size I'm thinking 6 oz maybe too small I'll get 9oz ( of meat). That outta do me. U know feed a cold starve a fever?? Food came quick and we ate in. We were in shock. The sandwiches were jammin with goodness. Our mouths dropped open with surprised looks on our faces. THIS outta do it?! Just like east coast delis. The bread was toasted and buttered to perfection, the meat was tender and deviously delish. First I thought no way am I going to eat this whole Ruben but after the first bite it was ON!! The really nice pickles were a good flavor too. Two different kinds in the little Baggie. One was more like cucumber and the other pickleish. Does that even make sense ? Lol the Cuke one was more green and quite a different flavor than the other. But both very good. We were reading that they are made here in Detroit. The cole slaw he had on his 17 1/2 was so good hubby went back up to counter to get a small side of it. It was perfectly sour & creamy! So thumbs up on this place. Next time in Detroit u have a bookmark!!
google avatar

Karen K.

Yelp
I guess those complaining about the price haven't been to another Deli. This is the going price of a corned beef sandwich. The size and taste is pretty good. Plus I don't have to tip. The corned beef egg rolls are really good. The establishment matches the neighborhood.
google avatar

Jr J.

Yelp
The food here decent but not as good as it was a few years ago. I still go here sometimes when I wanna have there chicken sandwich which is pretty much the only thing I'll eat there I do like the hospitality there. The parking lot is small but I don't really see a lot of cars there so it's not so bad overall not a bad place just not my first pick for lunch
google avatar

Jon S.

Yelp
I haven't been here in years. But the Corned beef sandwich is to die for. Absolutely divine! I would drive from Grand Blanc just to come here and get that sandwich. The only thing I miss from MI is the sandwiches here. If I ever end up within 2 hours of this place, I will be back!

Jman H.

Yelp
If you want some really good corned beef, such as a reuben, this is the place. Currently drive through only, call ahead place order. They will get it ready
google avatar

Rick M.

Yelp
Every sandwich I have tried is excellent. The amount of meat in the sandwiches is more than any other eatery in the area, worth the price! The Bread Basket is the only place I will order a Deli style sandwich.....every other restaurant in this area is disappointing once you have eaten at the Bread Basket. Try the Rueben fries for a treat.
google avatar

Dustin M.

Yelp
Exteremely rude will never go back, went there today and had never gone through the drive through I get there and the lady at the window was so rude I guess you have to call in your order to pickup in the drive thru which is fine but her attitude was so unprofessional and let's see you're in business to make money okay I will take my money elsewhere.
google avatar

Therle D.

Yelp
Yeah, the prices are a bit on the high side, but let's back up the bus and see what you get! These guys are generous with the portions, and work pretty fast behind the counter. There was a Bread Basket near my work years before, so when I found out there was one opening within walking distance I was ecstatic! Honestly, go and try it out for yourself. These guys have the right idea for handwashing-required-after, ridiculously-delicious food served simple.
google avatar

Brittany W.

Yelp
So I got the 11.99 corned beef sandwich, although it was excellent quality it lacked quantity for the price. I'm from Cleveland, Ohio and I'm used to slymans 15.99 sandwich and you can feed 5 people off one. But I'm not in Cleveland anymore so this will do. Prices are on the steep side.
google avatar

Stefanee C.

Yelp
Got a regular cornbeef with Swiss mustard on a onion roll. The fries were the best. Onion roll super dry almost stale the meat was very very fatty. Not worth the money.....
google avatar

Steve L.

Yelp
Nice deli - about the only one in the "downriver" area. All the normal expected sandwiches and sides all done very well. You will leave full, a lot of food for a fair price. As each sandwich is made to order, a large order may take a while, this is NOT fast food. Expect to wait up to 5 minutes or more for your order. If you are looking for Corned Beef or Pastrami look here.
google avatar

Hassen F.

Yelp
What was supposed to be anticipation of a great Corned beef sandwich ended up being a total disappointment. I've eaten at the Livonia location with mixed results. I don't get it. You charge $9.00 for a corned beef sandwich plain and add 60 cents for a roll instead of rye?? Seriously? Asked for Russian on the side, got 3 packets for two sandwiches. Corned beef was not up to par, very bland and the roll was not toasted or buttered. Staff need major lesson in customer service. Not happy spending $17 for two sandwiches and getting attitude when I ask for dressing enough for two sandwiches. Never coming back-this location won't survive this way. Nickel and diming your customers even after asking ridiculous prices for a plain sandwich will get you zero repeat customers. I've had better sandwiches at Arby's at half the price. Avoid this place if you can.
google avatar

Staci D.

Yelp
This place was pretty horrible. The teenage girls taking the orders and serving them were very unprofessional. They were dressed in street clothes which I don't expect a uniform but at least matching t-shirts. I ordered a turkey sandwich..and that's what it was. Nothing special to justify the $11. I waited 20 minutes for an over priced sandwich. Wasn't impressed nor will i recommend or go back.
google avatar

Jim O.

Yelp
Stopped here on June 6th on our way to a Tigers/Red Sox game. Our corned beef sandwiches were terrific and equal in quality to other Bread Baskets that we have eaten in previously in other Detriot area locations.
google avatar

Morris D.

Yelp
This place has some of the best deli sandwiches in metro Detroit. The price you pay for the food is just right. you can not leave this place hungry and unsatisfied. They not only made large sandwiches but they are full of flavor.

Raquel G.

Yelp
ATTENTION ALL FORMER AT&T Southfield Employees : The Bread Basket has "finally"come to Downriver . Just one bite of their Corned Beef Sandwich takes you back to the best corn beef you have ever eaten.....moist, , juicy, packed with flavor & enough for two !!!! Now if only we could get someone down this way that makes a good jewish bagel .
