Bread + Butter - Review - Santa Monica - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Straight from Tasmania, this Australian bakery has taken over the former GGET space on Main Street. The glass case is filled with croissants, pesto-egg breakfast buns, cinnamon rolls, danishes, and other buttery things. There are also sandwiches and pizzas that you can sit down with on the patio, where the blue tables and red umbrellas could be a subtle reference to the Aussie flag. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Cathy Park

Google
What a fun spot to start the day!! Some of the best pastries you’ll ever have - highlights are the morning bun, cinnamon roll (available on the weekend only), and nduja croissant - and just great vibes all around from their open kitchen to their lovely staff. Been back three times already and will definitely be adding this to my bakery rotation.

Google
Instantly became one of our favorite bakeries! The butter croissant, and the one with added sea salt and caramel coating are legit some of the best we've ever had. Don't shy away from the caramel one if you're avoiding sweets - it's a hint of sweetness, well balanced with the salt on top. One of the best bites in LA! Everything else we tried was great too. The people are friendly. There's a good amount of outdoor seating with a nice vibe. Love it!

Google
This is hands down the best bakery I've been to anywhere in the world. The croissants and UNREAL! The lamination is gorgeous, they have lovely flaky outer layers, but the inside is so soft and buttery. This croissant is straight up better than any croissant I've had in Paris. I've already introduced a bunch of friends to the B&B croissants and everyone agrees that they're incredible. But that's not all this bakery does. I'm in the middle of a mission to try everything on the menu - and yes the specific menu changes every day. I had one morning bun weeks ago and I haven't stopped thinking about it. The sweet Danish? Fire. The breakfast bun? While not a laminated dough, still fantastic! The coconut cake? A heavy but not too sweet delicacy that will fill you up. The only thing I've had that I wouldn't get again is the cherry bomb, but that's a me flavor preference. It's still a well constructed goodie. But the other absolute star of the show? THE FREAKING SANDWICHES. Good golly Almighty are those things good! While I could get on my high horse about the crust not being overly crusty on their baguettes, the reality is that the bread is delicious and I'm not destroying my mouth for a sandwich. All the flavor combos are simple but so so good. Grab a sandi and hit the sand - trust. I can't praise this bakery enough, and you should definitely check it out, but also if you don't I'm (selfishly) happy to keep it an approachable neighborhood gem.

Google
Great pastries, a proper flat white, excellent service! This newer Aussie influenced pastry shop has become the new darling on the Westside. I've enjoyed a lot of their laminated pastries and they've mostly exceeded expectations. My current favorite is a morning bun with nduja butter that's brushed with Zabs hot honey and finishing salt. What a savory delight! Space is small, but the staff does their best to converse and connected but get you on your way so the line moves quickly. There's plenty of patio seating for you to enjoy your drinks and eats and being your furry friend s.

Google
Stopped by in the morning and it was totally worth it. There is a big variety of really appealing pastries. I tried the morning bun which was soo delicious. Cappuccino was also as it should be Will definitely become one of my favorite cafe’s/bakeries. Not to forget, the staff is great

Google
The best chocolate croissant I’ve had outside of France! The perfect combination of crispy, flakey, melt in your mouth goodness. They also make a mean flat white, which can be enjoyed at their cute patio space to top it off.

Thinking 2 steps ahead, I placed my pre-order online early morning around the opening time to secure my Walnut Croissant. Yes, you heard it right, walnut. Prolly kinda uncommon, but it’s indeed one of their signature pastries, which was the closest comparison to any other places’ almond croissant. Located right by the street, sitting at the patio gave that people-watching experience with sun kiss. I arrived right at noon, which was also my pickup time, and their pastries showcase was almost empty and there’s literally no single croissant left. LOL, even the servers told me I made smart move by pre-ordering. I finished my gigantic croissant on the spot. It wasn’t reheated yet it’s still so good. The price was prolly quite high being close to $10, but the size and how packed the walnut paste stuffing was, made it totally worthy. That crunchy layer on top was doubtlessly slapping, like literally fully covered with walnut!

Google
Take my money!! A place with delicious coffee AND top notch pastries. The croissant…haven’t had such a good one in years. The many layers of crispy, flakiness as you bite into it…and then to find layers of fluffy, buttery goodness on the inside. It’s probably going to win awards if it hasn’t already. Same with chocolate croissant. And the morning bun? Good lord. So bloody good. They also had salami & cheese baguettes this morning!

Yelp
Fantastic. Excellent staff, that are always so helpful and list all of the adjectives to help you decide. A little bit of a wait on busy days, but the line moves fast You can't go wrong with anything croissant related. It's so flakey and perfect. The best I've had in the states. The little seating area outside is perfect.

Yelp
Bread + Butter has to have the best baked goods in the Ocean Park area. So buttery, flaky, fresh, and delicious. The croissants and buns are a must! The service is warm, friendly, and inviting. The place is beachy and charming. And the baked goods are some of the best that you'll find in LA. B + B is absolutely worth the stop and worth the wait if you're in OP!

Yelp
There are a lot of pastry options here. They all look incredible too! I got a blueberry danish which was really good. The exterior was flakey and buttery. I will say everything is super expensive. Over $7 for most items.

Yelp
Came back a month or two after they opened and was so pleased to see how popular the business has gotten already. They also had a bunch of new pastries on offer since I first came. I got the morning bun today and it was deliciously buttery, sweet and flaky. The owner is usually working and she's lovely. Ambiance is casual, with a bunch of tables and chairs outside. It was busy on a Wednesday morning around 7:30 am with people getting morning pastries and coffees.

Yelp
Being quite a new comer especially occupying a space at the heart of Santa Monica's Main Street, you surely have expected its popularity still resides at its peak. Fortunately I was thinking 2 steps ahead, placing my pre-order online early morning around the opening time to secure my Walnut Croissant. Yes, you heard it right, walnut. Prolly kinda uncommon, but it's indeed one of their signature pastries, which was the closest comparison to any other places' almond croissant. Yelp
Excited to come back and try more of the pastries! Line was pretty long but moved quickly. Parking is fine - lots of street parking and it's right down Main St. We got the two croissants - a standard one ($6) and one with cultured butter and caramel & sea salt-glaze ($7). Both were tasty and perfect. Lots of folks in the line got sandwiches - so something I'm excited to try next time.

Yelp
Awesome coffee! Lovely space, super nice service. The pasties are phenomenal! Highly recommend.

Yelp
So thrilled that Bread + Butter took over the old Go Get Em Tiger space--what a glow-up! The vibe is fresh and inviting, and the pastry case is full of absolute gems. The morning bun is a standout: beautifully layered, perfectly crisp on the edges, and bursting with cinnamon and cardamom--an instant favorite. The sweet strawberry danish is equally fantastic--bright, buttery, and just the right amount of indulgent. The cultured butter croissant, walnut croissant, and pain au chocolat were all solid--flaky, rich, and clearly made with care. As for the breakfast bun... that's a hard pass. It's about 98% bread and only 2% filling (egg, ham, and cheese), which left it feeling a bit underwhelming. That said, the hits far outweigh the misses, and the quality and creativity coming out of this place are seriously exciting. Bread + Butter is a welcome--and delicious--addition to the neighborhood. Can't wait to come back and try more!

Yelp
OMG! Santa Monica is a trek for me and b+B was on my list to try. I was anticipating it so much that I couldn't sleep. It did not disappoint. I love croissants and their cultured butter croissant is one of the best I've ever had! It is big and crispy and flaky and light and so buttery. I felt like there was a big chunk of melted butter in the middle... it was so amazing. I also had to get the walnut croissant which is similar to an almond croissant but with a walnut filling. It is slight sweet and heavily filled. The barista gave me the pastry and I was surprised by the heft! It is a heavy croissant and absolutely delicious! Two of the most amazing croissants I've ever had and I have FOMO for all the other pastries that I did not get the opportunity to try. I am definitely coming back. The coffee was nice and darkly roasted and was delicious, but the pastries totally eclipsed the coffee experience and that is ok. Street parking. Casual. Great service. Please come and create your own experience.

Yelp
Delicious morning bun. Love the rich flavor and texture. Sweet bakery. So happy to see a vibrant business on Main Street. Great service. Will go back to try all the things everything looks amazing.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this spot walking down Main. Stopped in for a quick coffee and was not disappointed. Busy operation in a small space but staff is very friendly managing the crowd. Pastries looked but did not try them will have to come back!! Pro Tip: located adjacent to old school motel. Enjoy your coffee outside and check out a place standing still in time

Beth M.

Yelp
Best croissants you'll find anywhere!! Everything we got from Bread + Butter was delicious. From baked goods to coffee, we really enjoyed it all. One of the owners offered our kids croissants as we waited in line and was so warm and friendly. All the staff was. We'll be recommending this place to everyone we know. Go check it out and taste it for yourselves!

Yelp
The line out the door should mean something. Bread + Butter is in a small lot near a motel? It feels like a weird spot but those guests are pretty lucky . I came on a Saturday late morning and still had to wait around 10 minutes. The line moves actually pretty slowly. I think it's cuz the owners and servers really do try to connect with the guests which I admit is a great thing but it also adds more time. The spot has pastries and coffees. The coffees looks decent but I think the pastries are what you need to get. There are some sweet and savory ones on display and some look super interesting. I got the plain old classic croissant. It wasn't hot but still it was super fresh. The layers! Wow the layers. It looks beautiful and it was fully of salted butter but it also felt like the crust was a bit too tough. It was too much of a contrast to the fluffy interior and maybe fought against it a bit. For $6, it is a lot... you make the call but while it was still enjoyable, I feel there are better ones at a better deal.

Yelp
Bread + Butter is the bakery this neighborhood needed and they are here to stay. I've been here a few times, each time more impressed than the prior visit...so far only had their sweet items, not the delicious looking savories. The carefully made coffee only enhances the flavor of their croissant and brioche dough based treats. Everything is made fresh, with passion and just divine. Service is super friendly. What a welcome addition to Main Street.

Yelp
The croissant, sandwiches and cookies are delicious, the line doesn't lie, totally worth the wait!

Yelp
All the positive reviews were spot on. This place is a little gem. This is where I'll go when I'm up early and want a delicious, warm and cozy breakfast. The staff and ownership couldn't be more welcoming. Flat white made by the OG's. Am still thinking about that croissant and cinnamon roll

Yelp
They have a sandwich of the day so it's a fun mystery (or i guess one could pick up a phone?). This was.... Possibly the best sandwich I have ever had? The bread and the combination of flavors.... (basil, arugula, red pepper, feta, green olives, pesto mayo). Special shout for the bread... so many sandwiches with crusty bread will destroy the roof of your mouth. not this! this is perfect. it was only $10?! Have also tried their croissants which were incredible. lovely staff and cute little soace with a bit of outside seating.
google avatar

Lily H.

Yelp
I had great expectations. I walked in on a Saturday at around noon and they only had limited options. I chose the raspberry pastry. I wasn't blown away. And it was a bit oily. The cashier was hot though.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
This needs to be said: this is the best morning bun I have ever had. It's always soft, sweet (but not overwhelmingly so), and perfectly cinnamon-y. Everything else is good too, but that's become my go to.
google avatar

Sasha B.

Yelp
I've lived close to Main Street for over 20 years, and I've always thought that we need a high quality bakery in the neighborhood. Well...the wait is over, as Bread + Butter is THAT place! The coffee is delicious - my favorite in all of Santa Monica and Venice, and their baked goods are out of this world. The chocolate croissant is the best I've ever tasted (and this includes croissants in Paris and in other parts of France). Their fresh fruit danishes are incredible, as are their sandwiches, plain croissants, and everything else in the shop. The staff and the owners are super nice and friendly. Bread + Butter is the best addition to the Main St / Ocean Park neighborhood!
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
This is my absolute favorite coffee in Santa Monica/Venice, the cold brew in particular. On a whim, I ordered their mortadella sandwich because it looked so good and OHMIGOD it's been a week and a half and I am still dreaming about this sandwich!!!!! I wish this place was next door to me. Even better...their prices! So reasonable!

Yelp
So people have been raving about this place since it opened and I had to try it. It is a tiny place and got there just before 8 with my pal @timsthebordercollie. Tons of options and my favorite is a ham and cheese crossisant so I got that along with a plain crossisant and a regular coffee. Brought both home and had the ham and cheese one this am. If you want something very light and airy this is not for you. It weighs a good amount and I would say lots of butter in the pastry on top of the cheese and ham. It was excellent and it is something quite different than the others around and I am still full. Wow. The coffee was decent and service 1st rate. So the plain crossisant has the same sort of heavy butter content and if you want it light and flakey this may not be for you but if you want flavor, character and a pastry with the mostest this is for you. I liked them both, yes different then others, yet excellent in general.

Yelp
Amazing croissants, in the running for best in the city (toss up with Petitgrain)! We tried both the plain and chocolate and both were excellent. We wanted to try the morning buns, but they were sold out before 9am on a Thursday. Went back a second time the same day and got the ham sandwich (sandwiches are available after 9:30 am). Delicious (especially if you like pickles)! They only had a few sandwiches left at 11:45am. We overhead the barista explaining how good their chocolate sauce for drinks is so definitely want to try a mocha or hot chocolate next time.

Rupesh K.

Yelp
I got there a few minutes after they opened and there was already a crowd gathered there. Great, fresh pastries.

Yelp
Since I live in the neighborhood, I came in on a later afternoon and met and talked with the owner who was SUPER sweet and kind--chatted about the history of the space going back to when it was Amelia's. Nice selection and love how you just can see everything going on in the bakery, got a walnut croissant and regular one too. Both were delicious and pricy but you can tell the ingredients are great and made with care. Highly recommended!

Tom M.

Yelp
The food is amazing BUT...I love their Morning bun, they say it is their number 1 seller! I go there often just for the Morning bun but they are selling out of it earlier and earlier. Today at 8:30, an hour and a half after opening and 5+ before, #1 seller is gone. They told me in the past I need to get there before 10am. They probably won't be THE destination for me anymore, too inconsistent. I definitely will drop by if I am in the area, just won't go there specifically for them!

Robert E.

Yelp
delicious pastry and coffee, i really enjoy. it's very addictive though :(. i can never take a pic cuss i always devour it right away
google avatar

Roman K.

Yelp
Solid addition to the neighborhood. Perfect combo between good cup of coffee and freshly made pastry.
google avatar

Xyanna T.

Yelp
finally a place with soft baguette bread for sandwiches. beyond bomb. service was exceptional. definitely coming back for the bread and the rich flavors.

Tori H.

Yelp
Checked out Bread & Butter today, what a cute space! As soon as I walked in, I got a gut feeling that they were going to last longer than most of the other businesses that have occupied the space. I like that you can see them baking and know that everything is super fresh. Very friendly staff! I went just to get a latte but their morning bun was calling my name so I indulged and WOW - best cinnamon roll I have ever had! Love knowing this little cafe is here now!
google avatar

Marina Z.

Yelp
Probably one of the most delicious pain au chocolat's I've ever had. There were so many layers, it was so flaky and buttery. Also had the parfait with peaches and the granola was amazing. Will definitely be coming back.

Martin W.

Yelp
I have been chomping at the bit - and quite a number of walnut croissants - to leave a five star review for the best new pastry/sandwich shop in all of Santa Monica. Olivia, the superbly talented Aussie chef/owner, is the real deal. EVERYTHING is made with care, passion, and love. Baguette sandwiches, granola, and coffee all beyond compare. The staff is helpful, nice, and enthusiastic. No hyperbole, Bread + Butter makes the more established SM bakeries taste like Hostess ... okay, that may be a bit hyperbolic. Can't help it, I'm hooked.

Neelam J.

Yelp
It's as if I'm having a croissant in France. Mind blowing and mouth watering. No place in LA is doing what B+B is doing.

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Wow! Just wow! Among the best pastries I've eaten and I'm a global traveler. Especially the walnut croissant- those crisp, perfectly toasted walnuts on top- chef's kiss. It's super cute, with friendly staff and yummy coffee as well. Now I know where to get fresh goodies for local friends. I'll be back.
