Bread + Roses Bookstore and Café

I used to love this restaurant back when it was vegan, and I was a big fan. I recently visited again and had a delightful surprise! The place still has the same cozy, book-filled atmosphere. I do miss the live music the previous owner used to have it gave the restaurant such a warm and inviting vibe. As for the food, I have nothing but good things to say. Even though the menu is no longer vegan, I tried the BF Line Salmon with the starter, and it was absolutely delicious. The whole dish was healthy and well-balanced, and the dessert was one of the best I’ve ever had a perfect combination of sweetness and the tart flavor of red fruits. Simply amazing!

Beautiful cafe. New owners and this now features Brazilian food. Desserts and coffee were delicious. It was fun to try the Brazilian desserts. Since this used to be a bookstore some of the books are still there. It looks like they aren't maintaining the book store portion and instead are focusing on the food and drinks.

beyond incredible food!! we got the fish and chips platter and the chicken alfredo and it was genuinely the best we’ve had. everything had perfect texture and seasoning. the chocolate and condensed milk dessert was delicious and they even gave us a free one with a strawberry 🥹 the strawberry tres leches cake was also so good! perfect textures and just the right amount of sweetness. also the workers were so kind and lovely!! i highly recommend coming here :))

I've recently moved into the area and have found this gem of a cafe. The food is delicious and guilt free, the vibe of the place is calming and comfortable. With so many books and plants hanging about it's honestly my number one spot to spend my free time. I've fallen in love with their Blackberry Dandy and their variety of food dishes though my favorite has to be the Feta and Fig Toast I don't usually even like feta!

Bread + Roses is truly an amazing space! The food is delicious; the tarts are my favorite along with the sweet potato fries. Drinks are good. I always add sugar to my coffee, they have and use a coffee bean cooker, and I love the autumn spice dandy. The Dandy drink is a great decaf option for coffee. The employees make me feel at home and safe. The atmosphere is accepting and comforting. Lgbtqia+ safe. It's the perfect place if you're having a bad day and need cheering up. They feed the homeless who come in and get a free drink and food! Local musicians, artists, and authors are showcased here! Great comunity!

First, the positive -- the new owners have brought some very tasty Brazilian food to the menu, which I quite enjoyed! On the less positive side, this place actually used to be a very decent coffee shop (fun, funky vibe + daily-ish music acts), but it really can't be considered that anymore. I say this to be helpful & constructive, not mean: the staff really needs to learn the difference between a latte, a cortado, and macchiato -- all of which are listed on the coffee menu. If you order any of these, you will get... a mediocre latte. On my first day in here, I ordered a cortado, and I got ... a large latte. I started to explain to the barrista what a cortado was, but there was a pretty steep language barrier so I just let it go b/c i I didn't want to be that guy. Second day, I ordered a macchiato (see photo) to see if day 1 was a fluke .... and... I could tell by the fact that they were pouring the not-quite-steamed milk into 12oz cup instead of a 4oz cup it was going to be the same issue. I wonder what I would have received had I ordered a latte AND a macchiato AND a cortado ;) ? Now, I will say, if a coffee shop doesn't actually *have* a cortado and a macchiato listed on their coffee menu, it can be caveat emptor if you order one of the less common-ish espresso drinks; but if it's on the menu, you should know how to make it semi-correctly. Honestly, I think they must have just left the same coffee menu up from the previous owners without really appreciating what the different types of espresso drinks are. Unfortunately, as I mentioned, there is somewhat of a language barrier with the staff, so it's difficult to communicate the distinction. It's not the staff's fault, really -- they are super nice, and just haven't been trained (and are still learning english). I would love for the new owners to address this-- it can be a very simple fix (and incredibly easy to train staff on)! I look forward to coming back once they've had some time to practice :) Verdict: if you are dropping in for a bite, it's worth trying! But if you are looking for a coffee shop, I'd say you're better off trekking to Nirvana coffee (Barnstable) or Three Fins (W Dennis)

I absolutely loved the layout of this restaurant, especially with the bookshelves where people can sit, enjoy a meal, or appreciate a good book or why not both? The food is also wonderful! The atmosphere has a slightly retro vibe while incorporating contemporary elements, making it a unique and delightful dining experience.

Discovering Bread + Roses made me happy our boat got canceled to Nantucket. Here is why: 1. The bookstore/coffee shop combo is one of my favorite mergers of a business model. This place has a ton of character and is super quaint. It’s very easy to get cozy here and it’s a great place if you have children as well. 2. Coffee is fantastic! They also do not serve any milk here. So oat is their base. I was happy about that. 3. Really friendly staff and extremely clean space. 4. They sell new and used books! Overall this place is awesome. The bookshop is cute, although the drinks were a little boring. The matcha latte was too milky, but it was blended well together though. The pistachio latte was a little too sweet. The large isn't much bigger than a medium, FYI.

We went there for a delicious cinnamon roll video, but there were no good pastry options. So I tried the curled-looking bread and a cute bun that looked like a slider. She said it's dulce de leche. I was afraid the de leche would be too sweet, but it's a good sweetness. But all the bread and buns are hard and dry. The mocha, though, is chocolatey and very coffee-forward. Matha? Yuummm, it's not sweet, but very thick matcha. It's some bookstore-ish, tons of great seating, and cozy Summary: I will go back for the fantastic drink and sit there for conversation, which is the perfect place for a meet-up with friends.

If this makes sense, when I came here I expected the coffee and breakfast to be good. I just didn't expect it to be this good. Everything from the taste of the coffee to the texture of the pancakes was executed perfectly. The attention to detail was key. When it comes to breakfast you really need that level of attention to turn basic foods into greatness. Heck, the avocado toast was more like a sandwich. It's worth your time.

Absolutely worth the stop! We had a fantastic meal at Bed and Roses. The salmon was perfectly cooked and paired beautifully with the red beans, rice, and sautéed spinach. Everything was flavorful, fresh, and satisfying. The iced mocha and iced dirty chai were both excellent. Rich, well-balanced, and not too sweet. For dessert, we tried the coconut and chocolate brigadeiros. They were massive and incredibly delicious. This place has cozy vibes, great service, and food that really delivers. Highly recommend.

This place is super cute and worth the visit especially if you're only going to be Hyannis for a quick stop before catching a bus or the ferry. The staff were friendly and service was quick. There was also a lot of seating and food options!

Big fan of the coffee and atmosphere. It's the definition of what a great local friendly coffee shop and bookstore should be. Not to mention the latte drinks here are top notch. The BlackBerry bliss iced latte is heavenly. Creamy, smooth cold foam with hits of sweet blueberry is perfect for summer. I got a small which is the size of a normal drink at most places. Inside is very inviting as there are several tables nestled among the books and plants. The music and decor will give you hippie vibes. There was live music on a Monday morning. There are also a few tables outside if you prefer the auns This place is great for meeting up but working to an extent but it could be challenging to grab an outlet and take a call depending on where you can find a seat if it is busy. Free 2 hour street parking out front. Definitely worth stopping by for a caffeine fix and supporting a great local LGBTQ business!

Was a big fan of Bread and Roses. The new owners really should have changed the name. There is nothing left that was Bread and Roses - not the staff, not the menu, not the vibe, not the books. I almost ordered from the menu (not realizing that they were no longer vegan). Since the former establishment was 100% vegan, I think it would be helpful to have a sign alerting people. I don't understand why they have kept the name. The few vegan options were...uninspiring. We left and ate at the Thai place next door. I hope there will be another restaurant to fill the Vegan void on the Cape.

It made me so so sad to see what BnR has become. I loved its prior iteration. Now - Fox News on the TV, no cozy feel, no LGBTQ book section, no SOUL anymore. Crying quietly.

An all-vegan cafe and bookstore on the cape?! What more could I ask for... plus, the ambiance was exceptional and the staff was kind and helpful. My only gripe was that they were out of most of their drinks (and all coffee) when I visited. Would love to come back for their matcha or kombucha! My group tried a couple of sandwiches and the avocado toast. The best was the "the good trouble" sandwich.

Hands down one of my fav places on the entire cape. I love that they have so much local art and creations and that everything by default is vegan. The drinks and food are fantastic. The portion of the avocado toast was massive and so so so damn delicious. They usually have live music as well and a lovely seating area. An ethical and fantastic spot.

Usual consequence of a lack of coffee shops around - long line, high prices, and ok coffee once you get to the front. Out of almost all non-dairy milks.

New owners? Where did the welcoming Pride flag go? The vibe feels a bit more generic than I remember. The cozy couches and lived-in feel are gone (well, the couches are in the back behind closed doors...hmmm...food was tasty, coffee was fine...but something is missing.

Amazing food! Great people! Comfort food! This place used to be at 70 center st, hyannis, but unfortunately the building caught on fire, so the moved to this place here...

Stopped there twice during our week on the cape. Both times the coffee, food, and service were outstanding! Definitely would recommend.

A really cute cafe bookstore that has a cool selection of books and queer affirming stuff everywhere (newspapers, books, decor). They have three distinct areas to sit in: a large communal table, some smaller 4 chair seating, and a back area with couches and arm chairs. The specialty latte itself was pretty alright. The price was high for a medium latte (7 dollars) but I think worth supporting this cool space.

I love the idea of a bakery and bookstore combination! The environment was comfortable and people were at tables reading and relaxing. The Matcha latte was delicious. I even bought myself a T-shirt. Highly recommend.

Found this place after searching for a lavender latte. I love the vibes of this place. Everything about it is so warm and inviting. When I see books, I automatically feel comforted and they add a lot of color to the interior. They also sell stickers and greeting cards which are all cute. I love cute stationery and stickers. Their stickers are a bit expensive but since they are social cause-related stickers and are a bit harder to find in regular stores, I suppose it's not too bad. There are also plenty of spaces to sit which I appreciate because many cafes have limited seating. They mainly have your regular cafe tables and chairs inside but they also have a big dining table with some more chairs and a couch and some cushion chairs at the very back. The food is probably the least notable for me. The lavender latte was good but not great and the avocado toast was alright. Overall, this was a solid find!

I stopped by for coffee cause it was the first place I saw after we parked our car. Cozy little coffee shop/bookstore. They are all vegan. They do not have whole milk. I normally am not vegan. But I got my lavender latte with coconut milk. It was alright. They had a mushroom and leek soup that smelled wonderful but we were so full from lunch we had no space. Cute little place to come work, study or hang out with some books.

Nice breakfast place, attentive staff, delicious pancakes. Would return if visiting Hyannis again.

This place is fabulous (don't believe the negative reviews... they are offended by the social justice, anti-racist and other supportive causes promoted). We LOVE this place from the people to the food to the music and the causes.

Awful food, i don't think they even have a real kitchen, beware. None of our food was hot and they didn't even have the basic condiments like butter.

The stunning food and coffee are an absolute must when in Hyannis but what really makes it the best cafe around, is the kind folks who work here and the comforting space they've created which knocks the whole feeling of "this really is the place" right outta the park. So so thankful for Bread and Roses!!

If I could give this a no star, I would! First, their website indicates they are closed on Mondays and Tuesday's- when we called today, a Tuesday, on a lark someone would answer - they do answer and said they are open every day of the week. I said their website said they were closed, response was, new owners as of 5 mos ago and guess he/she didn't update it. We went for the vegan options- had been there multiple times 2 yrs ago and loved the food, VEGAN and the vibe. And it was packed every day- no matter what time of day. Shocked when we entered the empty restaurant- vibe- dead, food- dull, vegan options- dismal. It was a funky, feminist, radical reading and unique books galore establisment It had a piano, and was a meeting place for interesting people having interesting conversations, meeting and good cheer. This place lost its edge- why go?

Glad to see it's back in operation. Friendly. Lots of options. Welcoming staff. Nice interior. A little hard to find.

This adorable eclectic coffee shop offers it all. We got the full experience and had live music vegan food choices and delicious coffee. When we are in hyannis this will be our go to spot. Awesome job and everyone is super friendly and helpful which made for the perfect experience.

A unique combination of independent bookstore and vegan café in an unassuming Main Street location, Bread & Roses serves breakfast and lunch daily using exclusively vegan ingredients. The challenge for non-vegans like us is finding an intersection between flavor and unique ingredients. Staff is extremely polite and helpful, leading both of us to conclude that we should have asked more questions than we did. I hedged my bets and ordered the Mediterranean Scramble, consisting of soy-based eggs and sausage balanced by rich greens, chick peas, pepitas, and a tomato pesto. It was a delicious mixture of flavor and texture that I would happily order again. My wife ordered a breakfast sandwich with many of the same ingredients but lacking vegetables and replacing them with non-dairy cheese. In her estimation, it had very little flavor. In her defense, the best parts of my meal were the additions to the dairy substitutes. We'll know better for next time. The bookstore takes up a good portion of the café, which is both a positive and a negative: positive because of the unique combination of classic and progressive literature, but negative only in that there isn't nearly enough room to seat customers during busy periods while also allowing for thorough browsing. All in all, I am giving this establishment a 5-star review because it offers a proudly vegan option in the land of clam shacks and lobster rolls.

They were very kind and I had to ask about an allergy and were able to give me a thorough answer. The latte was amazing and the food had a limited menu but was okay probably with the new menu coming out it would be super great. There was also a lot of books you could look at!

Staff was very rude. I'm not from the area and I didn't know it was vegan. Won't be back. Because I'm not a vegan doesn't mean I'm a complete idiot. Prices were really high.

Bread + Roses is no longer the place it was since the 2025 ownership change. The charm of this space is gone and it's just another generic restaurant on Main Street. Vegan options are boring and bland and the space pushes a certain religious agenda that is not inclusive or supportive. Horrible. The worse thing is that the new owners didn't change the name from Bread + Roses. This is a shame because the term itself is huge in social justice and inclusivity for all yet the place is no longer this exact thing. Will never step foot in this restaurant again. It's just a corpse of what it once was.

Yes times one million. I wish I didn't live 2.5 hours away from this place because I would absolutely be here every day!! I mean.....coffee and books, how could it get better? There's a woman who works here who's name I wish I'd gotten. We chatted about books for a bit and learned we're both from the same area. (Neither from the Cape). She was wicked personable and I bought the book she recommended. She spoke highly as well of a local author. There's a kitchen at the storefront, it is a vegan establishment though! Just a heads up to anyone going. We did not know that when walking in but still very much enjoyed what we ordered. I ordered the Mediterranean Caprese Flatbread. I thought upon seeing it that it was a bit on the small side but it was actually the perfect size! Pesto base, tomatoes, olives, and vegan feta cheese. Not something I'd ever tried before and I'm glad I did, it was yummy. To drink, a large iced cookie butter coffee! It wasn't even too sweet either! The store also has it's liquor license which is pretty cool as well. I will absolutely be back.

I absolutely love this coffee shop/restaurant. The staff really care and learn your name. You are not just another 'dollar' to them. I am really impressed as there is no other place like this on the cape and Islands at all. There is live music most days, new local musicians. The food is incredible, breakfast and lunch options. Yes it is vegan, so if you are a newbie to veganism or if you just want to expand your palate this is the place to try This place gives back to the community so please don't knock it until you try it!

New expansion! Looking for good food, walls of books, super friendly staff, and an inclusive atmosphere? Look no further than Bread and Roses. We've been heading there to meet with friends, go on a date, browse the new and used books, grab a vegan brunch, or do a little writing with a cafe ambience. Everyone who works there is upbeat, warm, and friendly. Ask them about their plans for activity nights! We're so excited! I think that Bread and Roses will provide a great boost to the community. This is exactly the place mid-cape has needed for so long. As a person with a few marginalized identities the atmosphere of zines, buttons, protest pics, identity flags, and unique literature makes me feel right at home. The coffee is good (and we are picky), I tried the balsamic sandwich and it was to die for. Blueberry scones were a hit too. They even have vegan cake sometimes! They just expanded to include very reasonably priced used books in good condition! Lots of popular titles too. I think a kids section is underway as well. My friends and I can't wait to see how Bread and Roses develops as they settle in. We are so grateful! My hopes for this spot is a variety of community friendly events in the evenings, even more books, especially used ones, and to see even more local artist/designer/crafted products with the same diversity, equity, and inclusion messages already present!

Stopped in for a cappuccino. Not a great version but the vibe and surroundings are so charming and a very cool spot to hang and work. The barista was super friendly. I love the concept. Will go back and try something different. My friends all love B &R and they are pretty discerning.

The atmosphere is great, everyone was super friendly and welcoming! They don't serve any dairy products, so our lattes tasted a little funny with the dairy alternative milks but still a super cute little place! Definitely a must try if you like oat milk/almond milks!!

My friend and I ordered breakfast sandwiches and a mocha and iced coffee... the sandwiches were incredible, my mocha was the best coffee I've had in a long time, and my friend said his iced coffee was great. I am allergic to tree nuts and they took it very seriously, which I sincerely appreciated. The chef even came out to make sure we were on the same page and I was comfortable! The library area has seats and is great for doing some work/emails. Highly recommend this place!

We came to this cafe because it was highly recommended by one of our teenagers, and it did not disappoint! I had the flatbread pizza with fig and pineapple and it was yummy. My husband had the breakfast sandwich with cream cheese added and it was so good. The vibes were very relaxing, the staff was super nice and friendly. For dessert, we shared a piece of the Biscoff cake and a chocolate chip cookie, both were insanely good. Highly recommend you get them. We also picked up a couple of books in the book shop area, and our 7 year old colored in the kid zone. She said "I really liked that place," when we left. We all did, both the vegans and the non-vegans.

Cute spot right on Main Street in Hyannis. Nice vegan choices including cute little flatbreads. The blueberry lemon scone was moist and delicious!

The food here is amazing! They were doing a $30 prix fix menu the night we were there which included a soup, salad, entree and dessert. They even brought a complimentary appetizer of hummus, baba ganoush, olives, olive oil and pita bread, which was delicious! Every single dish was beautifully presented and delicious! The service was excellent and the place was attractive too! I highly recommend it and we will be back!

I had the avocado toast, the coffee was excellent and I can't remember what my husband had but it was all delicious.

Fantastic cafe with great coffee and food. I had the best breakfast sandwich ever there this past weekend. Friendly team behind the counter and a lot of interesting merchandise on the shelves. Keep an eye on the menu as it appears that sometimes what's on the wall doesn't reflect what they have house that day, or at least that was my observation recently.

This place has quickly become my favorite weekend breakfast spot. It's a calm, pretty space with delicious food and amazing vegan coffee drinks. We always spend too much on books but it's okay. The staff is friendly and inviting, and a visit here always starts our day off right. This is a gem of a coffee shop in Hyannis!

Discovered this gem on the last day of our trip and cannot wait to visit next year. Such a relaxing and inspiring atmosphere with so many seating options surrounded by books. I tried some kind of matcha butterfly pea tea latte. It was amazing!

We enjoyed a lovely lunch at this trendy book store/ vegan eatery. I ordered the Feta and Fig toast and it was superb! The combo of flavors hit all the right notes! The restaurant was bright, cheerful, and clean. Staff was friendly as can be!!! Wish I lived nearby to linger a little longer and get a good look at all the books and other items for sale!! I HIGHLY recommend this wonderful establishment.

Went to Bread & Roses to grab a cup of coffee and run, but wish we could have stayed longer! It is such a warm and inviting space, with so many amazing books and pieces of art all over. I got a lavender latte which was so delicious (and not soapy!). It was busy, but there were so many things to look at while you were waiting that the time flew by!
