Brookline’s Breadboard Bakery Pop-Up Will Open Permanent Location - Eater Boston

"Boston’s legacy of pop-ups-turned-permanent continues this week with the announcement that Breadboard Bakery, a three-year-old pop-up inside Brookline Village’s Cutty’s sandwich shop, will open a permanent location. Breadboard’s creator, baker Daisy Chow (a Cutty’s cook who has also been working at Brookline’s Clear Flour Bread for nearly 15 years), has churned out countless kolaches over the past few years, making a name for the pastry in Brookline. ... Breadboard Bakery will pop up at Cutty’s for the final two weekends in June before Chow moves on to set up her own operation in Arlington." - Dana Hatic

Breadboard is our go to local bakery because of their utterly delicious baked goods. Soft, flavorful kolaches. Great, moist muffins. Crunchy on the outside - soft on the inside cinnamon rolls. 10/10 for flavor. There’s a line that forms outside so you do have to wait a little but luckily everyone in Arlington is friendly and sweet :)

Google
Excellent local bakery. A little, pricey, but the product is good. A line forms each morning that they're open for people to buy boules, muffins, kolaches and more, or to pick up online orders. Pre-orders have to be submitted a couple days in advance (see website for details). I think one of the big attractions are the kolaches, which are filled pastries you'd like if you enjoy danishes. They disappear fast.

Recently relocated and thrilled to discover this fantastic, authentic bakery just a block away! As a sourdough enthusiast, the olive bread here is unparalleled – moist, brimming with flavorful green olives, and boasting perfect crusts with a hint of caramel. It stands out on its own without any additional spreads or toppings. Even my partner, who isn't usually a fan of sourdough, took a huge slide. Also got croissants and other pastries, all 100/10. Our dog also received a treat, which he enjoyed so much that he held onto and finish it until we got home.

Google
Wonderful local shop. Seeded sourdough has a chewy, pleasant texture and is indeed chock full of seeds! Lamington was a total surprise with its sweet raspberry jam interior. My daughter also asked for a cup of water and was surprised that the owner also gave her a small pull apart baguette loaf on the house. Will def be coming back soon!

Google
Veteran baker, Daisy Chow and her husband, Josh Glaser, opened Breadboard Bakery just months before the coronavirus outbreak. That their bakery has survived and thrived in this challenging environment is a real testament to the quality of their baked goods and adaptability. For my first visit to the bakery, I placed an online order and swung by to pick-up my goodies. Their pick-up system feels very safe and ensures everyone is thoroughly distanced at all times. Everything I have eaten from Breadboard has been delicious, but I must give a special shoutout for three items in particular. First, the miche which has both amazing flavor and a gorgeous crust. You will not regret ordering this bread - it’s delicious simply with a slathering of butter and a sprinkle of salt, or toasted and used as the base for the NYT’s ‘Mushrooms on Toast’ recipe. Also, it freezes really well so I suggest ordering extra. The second item I would flag for special attention is the kolache, a Czech treat widely popular in Chow’s native Texas. Her version of this bun is soft and pillowy, topped with jam and/or cream cheese - and, IMHO, absolutely scrumptious! Final word to the wise: don’t miss the cinnamon roll! Breadboard’s cinnamon roll is unique in that it is made with laminated dough, like a croissant. I got mine glazed which I would definitely do if you are going to eat yours immediately. Next time, however, I think I might order some unglazed (available by special request) and freeze them so I can reheat them on demand (whipping up a little glaze myself). Summary: delicious goodies to be had at this local bakery! Highly recommend.

Google
I decided to check out Breadboard Bakery because I was already in Arlington for Butternut Bakehouse, and the two places are within five minutes of one another. I went ten minutes after opening, and there was already a line, but it moved relatively quickly. The menu is cutely displayed on a clothesline by the door, which is also where you order. I was bummed that we weren't allowed to go in and actually see and smell the pastries, as that is part of the fun of visiting bakeries. I got the glazed cinnamon roll, chocolate croissant, cranberry kolache, and cream cheese kolache (which is also the order in which I'd rank them from most to least favorite). The cinnamon roll had a nice flakiness, and the glaze was addictively but not overwhelmingly sweet. The chocolate croissant was interesting because there were thin chocolate bars that lined the inside instead of melted chocolate. (Granted, the chocolate did melt when I reheated it, and it tasted better that way. Maybe that is the expectation, but the croissant loses some of its flaky goodness when reheated.) The cranberry and cream cheese kolaches also tasted better reheated, but they were just okay overall. There wasn't much of a difference between the two; the cranberry one just had a plop of cranberry jam on top. Had I known, I would have tried a fourth pastry instead of a second kolache.

Google
Best neighborhood bakery West of Boston. Croissant, baguette (award-winning, Wednesdays only!), challah bread (Fridays) - and these are just the beginning!

Yelp
I've been scoping out all the bakeries in Arlington/Lexington for necessary post-ride carb fuel-ups - I like Kickstand because they have some bike stands out front but wanted to broaden my horizons. Venture forth in the search of delicious pastries and so on. A friend put me on to Breadboard, specifically, the Friday-only egg salad sandwich, but when I showed up, I was feeling something sweet. The kolaches came highly recommended - I went with the seasonal rhubarb flavor. Perfect touch of sweetness, nice balance of the cream. The dough had a nice eggy chew to it. Reminded me of a cross between an American-style fruit Danish and an Asian-style milky bread bun. I'll have to try the other varieties next. (Also, I may be running afoul of personal photo guidelines by posting a photo of the kolache with two big bites taken out of it but I was the uncouth beast stuffing it into my gob at a traffic light.) Got my husband the cheese croissant snail; he said very delicious. The hours are tricky, double-check before you come and do come early. Street parking available - I managed to snag a spot right in front of the store.

Yelp
Introduced to this bakery by the recent Hana Quon pop-up. There isn't an area current opened for dine in. It's a pick up window. We picked up the pre order & added: frozen cinnamon rolls, a brownie, and a cake slice. All were really good, our favorite being the frozen cinnamon rolls. There's a chance I baked them wrong, because it was the texture of a croissant. If so, it's been a happy mistake.

Yelp
Tiny street side pick up window for baked goods so no amenities (seats, tables, restroom, etc. However, I visited in the winter so perhaps there is more during the summer). Absolutely loved the brioche special in October and possibly one of the best loaves I have eaten (out of many!). If you come earlier in the day, there may be some day old selection options with discounts which make great bread pudding, stuffing, croutons, etc. If you order online, there is a small discount. Plus, a small sourdough starter is offered at no cost in each order. Pastries were tasty too! Will be returning!

Yelp
How can such a lean, small neighborhood operation bake bread at a national level?! The specialty here is bread from local, regional grains, freshly milled, and maintaining the flavor (and for those who care - nutrients) of whole grains. Everything is executed perfectly; I don't think people understand how magical it is that the breads here use more of the grain (vs all white flour in croissants and pain de mie), yet the output is the perfect specimen of that type of bread, just with enhanced flavor. This takes the highest level of skill, R&D, and knowledge. The sourdough is proofed just right, not too sour. Just a hint of flavor, crustiest of crusts, moist chewy yet tender crumb. The croissant is crisp on the outside with just a bit more color from the grains - you can see the specks - buttery, flaky on the inside. Excellent lamination. I could eat the whole load of the pain de mie in one sitting. Chewy crust, tender moist crumb. Sweet treats are also satisfying, whether the soft comforting kolache or the decadent wacky cake (better like chocolate for that one!).

Yelp
4.5/5 Pros: -Cinnamon roll and wacky cake--delightful! -Croissants! Get one! -Easy and efficient curbside pickup system during physical distancing -- Ranked Wacky Cake Slice ($3.00) This is not anything different than the best classic chocolate cake you've had, but it's the best chocolate cake you've had. Do you know what I mean? It's nothing groundbreaking and you've likely tasted this before somewhere in your life, but it is awesome and I would definitely get this again. Cinnamon Roll ($4.00) I wasn't expecting the croissant-like texture of this cinnamon roll, but it was excellent. There was a light amount of frosting on top and also some surprise frosting inside. Good cinnamon flavor. I loved this and would get it again. Plain Croissant ($4.00) What a lovely flaky, buttery croissant! And not oily! This was one of the better croissants I have had. This would be great to make into a breakfast sandwich. Monkey Bread ($4.50) This wasn't exactly what we were expecting, but it was still good. It was like croissant dough with chocolate chunks on top. It was crispy and flaky on the outside and soft, doughy, and buttery on the inside. Better when heated up. Strangely no cinnamon flavor. Would consider getting it again. Chocolate Chunk Shortbread Cookie ($1.50) Buttery shortbread cookie with a little chocolate salt. Brown Sugar Cookie ($2.00) Soft on the inside, slight crisp on the outside. Buckwheat Chocolate Chip Cookie ($2.00) Also soft on the inside with a slight crisp/chew on the outside. 100% Whole Wheat Loaf ($8.00) Great texture with a crispy/chewy crust and a soft and chewy inside, though the flavor was not totally what we were expecting.

Yelp
I am so excited that Breadboard is open! I went in this morning and tried one of their kolaches. Delicious filling and the pastry had a wonderful texture. I also had a cinnamon roll which was a perfect treat with flaky pastry and cinnamon. They also have bread, cookies, wacky cake and more. Will definitely come back! Breadboard was a weekend pop up in Brookline for a few years. The owner worked at Clear Flour Bakery, and I am thrilled she has brought her baking genius to Arlington. Looking forward to grabbing bread from here.

Yelp
I was recommended this bakery by a coworker who knew the owner, Daisy. My only regret is not stopping by sooner! Breadboard always has a super interesting menu with delicious unique treats, kolaches, olive rosemary bread (I HOARD THIS IN MY FREEZER), curry pastries and beyond. Also, I have to refrain from buying wacky cake every week. It's truly an amazing chocolate cake. We love daisy!!!

Yelp
I tried a variety of the pastries, and they were mostly okay, but not special. The ordering process was seamless (order online before 11, then at the counter after that), so this might be a convenient option in the neighborhood, but not worth a special trip. Ham and cheese croissant (4.75$) was not very crisp, and flavor was lacking. Just one piece of ham in the corner too. Lots of cheese though, and hard to have that much cheese and be crisp, to be fair! Chickpea curry hand pie (4.50$) had quite good filling, but the crust really suffered for not being hot. Cream cheese kolache (4$) was okay, but a little mushy. Wacky cake slice (3$) was a very standard chocolate cake, good level of moisture but way too sweet for me. Carrot cake slice (5.5$) was a little sweet for a carrot cake, but a decent rendition. Bienenstich bun (5.75$) was also kind of mushy, though it was pretty. Burnt Basque cheesecake slice (5.50$) was solid, but a pretty standard rendition. Overall, the best items I tried only reached the level of solid, with nothing stand out. Maybe there's a particular item I missed?

Yelp
I'm always searching for the perfect croissant and I have found a very good one at the breadboard bakery on Broadway in Arlington, MA. Its outer layers are crispy and the inside is soft with lots of butter flavor. I have also had their almond flour brownie which is just as it should be with lots of dark chocolate flavor and great brownie texture. I also tried the Wackie Cake slice made with oil but with a butter chocolate frosting that melts in your mouth and there is no stopping that train once you bite into it. The good news is that the owner uses no enriched flour in her products ( I asked), and nothing is overly sweet. My suggestion for the wacky cake would be to add another note of flavor and depth by perhaps creating a second with a (decaf) mocha frosting to really put it over the top. I've had the Raspberry Kolache which is sort of like a doughnut but so much better with its soft eggy-like dough centered with a cream cheese and raspberry filling that is also irresistible. These 4 items were preordered two days before as required for preorders (you can purchase without preordering on the day of as well) for just $13.30 which is reasonable for this area. All items tasted as if they were made the day I picked up and incredibly fresh. Earlier this week I've also had the chickpea curry hand pie which was tasty but a bit too crispy brown on the outside but otherwise worth trying again in the future. My suggestion in general for this takeout only bakery with chairs and tables outside (open Wed, Fri, & Sun from 8-1 pm) is to take a few more risks with flavors such as perhaps using a bit more spice to the hand pie like Penzey's Spice "Balti" seasoning or some other curry (no I have no affiliation with this spice company down the road) like Penzey's "Now" Curry to add complexity and a small kick to your flavors. A hint of salt for enhancing those flavors works too. Remember the warm spices too like nutmeg and cardamom to cream cheeses and eggs. I think it's a risk worth taking. I will be back to try their tahini cookie, blueberry muffin, baguette and other breads. Note: I have not been affiliated in any way with this bakery nor was paid for this review. But I have cooked for a living in the past. Enjoy!

Yelp
The best bread in the area by far--the challah, whole wheat, sourdough, raisin pecan, miche are all amazing. They also have really great croissant things (cinnamon rolls, plain, almond, chocolate, etc.) Also HIGHLY recommend the kolaches, they're a sweetened bread thingy with cream cheese or fruit in the middle. Daisy is the nicest. You can't eat inside and you order through what my daughter calls 'Daisy's special door,'--they're still working with stricter covid protocols than most, not a bad thing.

Yelp
This place is an absolute gem. A great cup of coffee, fantastic croissants and other pastries, flavorful bread, and always a treat for our dog. We particularly love the almond croissants, the cinnamon rolls, and the sourdough, but we've never had anything bad. Just a note: check the website for updated hours. Right now, they're open Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

Yelp
Best pastries and bread I've ever had. My sister and I went in by chance on the day they opened, tried their croissant and kolaches, and went back 5 more times. I love that they use buckwheat and that their pastries are not overly sweet. Here are the items I've tried in the order of favorites/recommendation 1. Plain croissant (I get this every single visit), milk bread, and raspberry kolache, raspberry muffin 2. Cream cheese kolache 3. Croissant bread pudding 4. Chocolate croissant and buckwheat chocolate cookie My entire family is in love with this bakery! I am so excited to try other items and the coffee section they have. But I'll most likely save money for the croissants croissants. There are some ceiling areas as well. Since it's really close to my place, I am night bring work or read with my pastries one day. For the price of the pastries, the sizes aren't big, but so worth the $$. I wish they had some kind of loyalty cards, like one stamp for one loaf or 1pt for dollar etc.

Yelp
For years I envied my relatives south of the Charles for their ability to get outstanding bread and pastries. I don't anymore! Breadboard is the whole package. Daisy Chow makes outstanding bread (I love the seeded sourdough, miche, and baguettes) and delicious pastries, cookies and croissants. Often when I eat croissants or baguettes I think longingly to my visits to France. I don't when I eat bread from Breadboard! I remember reading a tweet saying that an Asian person's highest praise of a dessert is that it is "not too sweet." Well when I eat desserts from Breadboard, my first thought is "Yum!" then, "Not too sweet!" Breadboard gets my highest recommendation. Give them a try!

Heidi P.

Yelp
Stopped at this bakery and I was very surprised. As of this date of review, they have a very high Covid protocol still in place; orders and goods passed through the front door window. There is a menu in the window, lots of great and interesting goodies. I picked up a few things and they tasted great. I noticed that they are only open a few hours 3 days a week, 8 am -1 pm. In bad or cold weather, not sure they will do much business because of the Covid protocol. I also think the prices are fairly in line with what's around in the area. They have a website for more details on their goods, and ordering online at breadandstuff.com. Hoping they will expand their days and hours open so they can increase business and stay here in our community.

Yelp
So far so good! This bakery opened last week and I went on the second day it was open. I went with my daughter and met a friend for tea. I was bummed their hot cocoa wasn't available yet but that was all the more reason to get chocolate cake at 9am. It was delicious and moist. I also got a croissant that was crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. I believe it was while wheat at least partly. There were four tea options and I got the black tea blend which was very nice. It is loose tea and really delicious. The cafe is similar in some ways to Commune Kitchen but much more visually uncluttered. I hope they eventually have sandwiches, salads and parfaits with house made granola. Also iced tea in the warmer months. Just a few suggestions

Yelp
Excited for the kolaches. The apple honey kolache was fantastic. Currently online orders only, but same-day pickup is available. Can't wait to try their other baked goods.

Yelp
Such a cute shop! Daisy and her three elves were working hard to make all the breads, pastries and cake. Oh yes, the Wacky cake, which was so good I had to dig into it on the ride home. She has all the yum and I am glad I moved 20 miles away because if I still lived across the street they would need a restraining order.
google avatar

Katherine E.

Yelp
The textures of the kolache make it a must-try. Some crunch to the topping, not too sweet, pull apart bread! This bakery just upped the value of living in Arlington, yes!

Rebecca E.

Yelp
Delicious! Love the free soudough starter, but love the Miche and pastries even more!
google avatar

Allison L.

Yelp
Breadboard is the best! All of their treats are delish and they are so so nice. I called them today and they left me some sourdough starter even though they were closed. They are also being super safe with Covid. Such a great addition to Arlington!

A O.

Yelp
Just got a loaf of seeded bread today. Great tasting, nice crisp crust yet soft inside. Lots of sunflower and sesame seeds. Perfect for salad night. Staff was friendly. Easy street parking. I would recommend everyone give this bread a try!
google avatar

Tony T.

Yelp
Went here with girlfriend and another friend and we got a sampling of several pastries and bread. All was delicious. Best coconut macaroons ever! The coffee and croissants were also top notch!
google avatar

Sushmita S.

Yelp
I was reading the review of the bakery on Boston Globe and they had a beautiful picture of all the breads and I knew I had to try them out the same day. So we had the cream cheese koalches, croissant bread pudding which were both amazing. Not too sweet, just the right amount of sugar. I also bought half a loaf of their sourdough bread. The bread was just the right amount of sour and had a nice dark color. I am going to be back soon to buy their bread. I only wish they were closer to home!

Ingrid P.

Yelp
This place is so good! We adore their cookies, vegan brownies, and Challah bread. But everything is good there! The owner Daisy also happens to be hilarious and made me laugh so hard the other day. They do same day orders and are even open during snow days!
google avatar

Georgiana S.

Yelp
The breads are high quality and some are unique for sure. They have standard white bread, 100% wheat, seeded sourdough (my favorite) but they also have danish rye and buckwheat bread--which I have not seen in this area before. The muffins and cinnamon buns are also delicious. They have plenty of seating, and easy street parking--Lastly the coffee is fantastic and they have a nice loose leaf tea selection as well.

Kate P.

Yelp
I can't believe there are kolaches in the Boston area. These Central Texas treats are a comforting taste of home and are absolutely delicious. If you haven't tried one, I recommend! The fresh baked bread loaves are also delicious. Staff is very friendly. Online ordering and pick up is seamless and easy.

Martha L.

Yelp
We feel so lucky to have this fantastic neighborhood bakery just around the corner from us. They have done a stellar job during the pandemic and their breads and pastries are fantastic. The Miche, seeded sourdough, pain de mie, monkey bread, croissants, everything is so good! Daisy is wonderful and they make a real effort with their clients. Highly recommend! Online ordering is easy, contactless pickup. Can't wait until they can open like "in before times" so we can stop by. Thank you, Daisy!

Faith D.

Yelp
The blueberry kolache is delicious! The bread is fluffy with just the right amount of chew and the blueberry filling tasted very fresh. Definitely a must try bakery in Arlington.

Bella S.

Yelp
Very rude cashier!!! I do not recommend this place. The cashier kicked me out for standing in front of the store while trying to order from their bakery online and support their business. I was over 6 feet away from both their pick up table and their front door. He came out yelling at me to move away!

Amy M.

Yelp
What an amazing addition to this quiet little neighborhood. Venture off Mass Ave, and you'll be rewarded with some of the most delicious baked goods you've tasted. If you've come this far, looking at reviews, you've probably heard about the kolaches. You should definitely try one. You should also try any of the laminated dough pastries (cinnamon roll, croissants, etc.), and one of the unique rye breads. Grab a cup of coffee on your way out because like everything else in this bakery, it's top-notch.
