My husband and I flew one-way from Richmond, VA to Tampa, FL on Spirit Airlines in early Feb, 2024; we returned on Breeze Airways because their flight schedule better matched our needs to get back to Richmond on a Saturday. Preparing for our trip, we were attracted by the fact that Breeze offered nonstop flights to Richmond and VERY low prices. Each of our tickets was only $47 each, one-way, but Breeze only gets about $25 of this after taxes are taken. Hence, there are add-on charges for pretty much ALL optional amenities on Breeze. (See below).
Baggage. You're allowed only one free personal item (17" x 13" x 8"), which is the size of a purse, small backpack, or briefcase. They charge for larger carry-ons and checked bags. We had consolidated our vacation items into one checked bag, and were still below their 50-pound weight limit. The bag also needed to be 62 linear inches or less. We pre-paid $35 for the bag at time of booking.
Seating. If you pre-select your seats, you'll need to pay more to Breeze - with seats with more leg room or in the front of the plane costing more. Given that this was only a short 1.5 hour flight, we risked not getting seats together when randomly assigned seats were given at check-in. We did, in fact, get an aisle and middle seat together -- AND, an empty window seat -- towards the back of the plane. (Row 25).
Food and Drinks. These are available, but at a cost. I've posted a photo of the options, with prices in Feb, 2024. Unlike Spirit Airlines, Breeze Airways did come around with free coffee, hot tea, or water.
Check-In. The Tampa Terminal did not have check-in kiosks, so we checked in at the counter, where we received boarding passes and luggage tags. Others showed their checked-in status on their phones. Staff were friendly and efficient.
In-flight experience. The plane seemed new or relatively new, with reasonably comfortable seats. My husband, who is 6', felt that he had sufficient leg room. We left on time, and arrived in Richmond a bit early. Laugh of the day: the pilot announced that "it was warm and sunny in Tampa. We shouldn't expect it to be in Richmond." Flight attendants were friendly.
In total, we paid $129 for two one-way tickets from Tampa to Richmond, one checked bag, and two small backpacks (personal items) -- a very good value. We would definitely fly on Breeze again, and prefer it over Spirit Airlines if they had similar itineraries with nonstop flights. Breeze was slightly cheaper for two persons with one checked bag ($129 vs $135), had a higher weight limit for a checked bag (50 vs 40 pounds), offered free coffee and tea on board, had outlets to charge iPhones at each seat, and their frequent flyer points expire after 2 years (as compared to Spirit's, which expire in 1 year).
