"After 60 years in business, Brennan’s Restaurant is calling it quits next month, with no plans to reopen. Co-owner Margaret Wade, granddaughter of founder John Brennan, cited a slew of reasons for closing the storied Berkeley restaurant: a looming 25 percent rent increase, global warming, and — somewhat surprisingly — a drop in cocaine use. The news began spreading last week and crowds quickly descended on the sports bar and hofbrau in horror and disbelief. Wade has no plans to open a new restaurant or bar elsewhere — she is getting out of the industry entirely. The business has changed significantly since she first learned about it, with shifts in drinking habits and climate change impacting operations. There will be no big farewell celebration, and the restaurant will keep serving until the scheduled closing date of September 15." - Janelle Bitker

This place always hits the spot. Had the corned beef hot plate. Side of Mac and cheese. Generous portions, however when food is this good, I always would prefer more. Spot has a full bar with plenty of beer on tap. Plenty of flat screens to keep you entertained with different sports usually playing on each screen. Right next to an Amtrak stop. I don’t mind the noise. Parking is definitely scarce. They do validate your parking if you park across the street a purchase of $4 or more. 4th street parking (sprengers lot) I’ve been here more than a few times, just never reviewed it. I’ll continue to come here. Great staple in the city of Berkeley.

Nice relaxing comfortable atmosphere. There are big screen tellies, very spacious, not as noisy as you would think with Amtrak within feet of you. Definitely comfort food....with a full bar!! Oh yes!!

Visiting from out of town. I went in on a Tuesday afternoon. This place is a Hofbrau cafeteria style establishment. Food looked really good. Bartender wasn't so friendly or attentive. Ordered a ham/cheese sandwich on sourdough. Good sandwich not the best. Large beer selection. Appears to be a local favorite and I'm sure if I was a local regular my experience would have been better.

This was my first time here. It's a very laid back informal place(which I love). The employees were very nice and cordial. The food was definitely worth the drive. I can't comment on the decor as there were so many patrons(St Patrick's Day) I had to be aware of where I was walking.

Overall, this restaurant is just ok. It didn't wow me, but it wasn't horrible. We came here for a thanksgiving meal, and the line was to the door. It's cafeteria style, so you have to tell the employee behind the glass what you want, and they assemble it for you as you move down the line. They have a separate bar for alcoholic drinks, so you cannot buy your food and liquor together. They lost points because of the long wait and the fact that I couldn't even get a refill on my coke. First, it took forever to get through the line, which shouldn't have considering they were just scooping food and putting it on a plate. Employees were moving super slowly and not very friendly. Then, after finding a table, which was dirty by the way, I walked up to the bar for a coke refill, however, the bartender said I couldn't have one, citing something about the soft drink tax in a low, mumbling voice. The turkey lacked flavor, and the portioning was small considering they charged $24 for one plate. The one good item was their mac n cheese. That was tasty. Overall I wouldn't come back for another Thanksgiving meal. It's overpriced, and parking is hard to find. The location is also by a string of homeless encampments and looks like a shady area. We saw a couple of homeless people hanging out under the bridge, which is right next to the place and where parking is closest.

Awesome plate lunches and open faced sandwiches! We had the turkey dinner with white and dark meat, cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn on the cob and dinner roll and butter. Delicious!!

Love going there and used to go with my mother, bro and sister. Now the are all gone and I go with my partner/husband. We choose our good food in the cafeteria line. We always GRT an Irish coffee from the bar. It is delicious always. Will be there soon again. Can't wait!
