A Maryland Restaurant Owner Goes on Trial for Allegedly Harassing an Underage Hostess [Updated] | Eater DC

"Opened in 2013 and closed in August 2020, Urban Butcher was a Silver Spring steakhouse where Raynold Mendizábal employed a teenage hostess in 2019 who later filed a March 2021 civil lawsuit alleging routine sexual harassment and unwelcome physical advances. The complaint says Mendizábal, then 48, would regularly greet her by saying “hello, beautiful,” follow with comments on her appearance, give a hug and a kiss on the cheek, and that this conduct caused her severe physical and psychological harms — anxiety, depression, loss of self-esteem, lack of appetite and insomnia — as well as alleged financial losses; the suit sought up to $5 million in compensatory damages plus statutory damages, legal fees, and other relief. I reported that a jury trial began December 19 in Rockville’s Montgomery County Circuit Court and that Mendizábal was found not guilty on December 21; a pretrial hearing and mandatory settlement conference had taken place in December 2021. After opening Urban Butcher, Mendizábal earned recognition including a 2016 Chef of the Year award from the Restaurant Association of Maryland, a spot on Washingtonian’s 100 Very Best Restaurants (No. 75 in 2020), and generally positive reviews from the Washington Post." - Tierney Plumb

The sandwiches are quite tasty... but if you took the competitions sandwich and cut it in half that's the size sandwich you're getting. I would say 6 inches is a stretch.... If I'm charged full price for a sandwich it should not be a half sandwich cut in half..... 🦕 See penny for scale

Came here while I was in the area to try this place out. Was pleased to see a decent amount of choices for sandwiches. I got the sourdough, wasn't really pleased with the bread itself, I'll try a different kind next time. I got hm with bacon and a bunch of toppings including extra grilled onions. Wish there was more grilled onions but that's a personal preference, I'll ask for extra next time. They also had salad, of which I got a side Caesar. The Caesar dressing was nice and thick and tasted amazing. Don't know if they make theirs from scratch or not, but it was yummy. As for the place itself, two entrances, one side for the deli, the other side for the butcher, you can buy meats to take home. As I'm currently without a kitchen to cook in, buying meat doesn't do me much good but it's cool that they have two separate counters. The employees were super nice as well. One double checked that I wanted 2 forms of onions. Honestly if they had onion straws I'd say that too lol. The inside had some tables and a counter with bar stops. Unsure if they had dine-in but I didn't chance it and ordered to go which I enjoyed at a park while reading. They gave me a nifty loyalty card so after sandwiches I get one free. I'll be back next week for sure.

The pastrami sandwich on sweet bread is to DIE for! It is so juicy, flavor-packed, and tender yet crisp on the edges. It tastes almost like bacon, so if you don't eat pork-- you must try this!! I ordered my sandwich with nearly everything and it's my new favorite. Go, Go, GOOO!!!

We had Brentwood Fine Meats cater our baby shower and it was amazing! We had chicken, bbq ribs, mash potatoes, baked beans, Caesar salad and cheesy bread. Everyone was raving about how good the food was! I wish there were more reviews on how good the food is for catering, so here's mine! Definitely will recommend and use in the future!!

Great tasting meat. The tri trip was delicious. The sweet roll was nice and soft, not too sweet. I wish they would load it with more peppercini's. The sandwiches are not very big so if you are hungry get two. Ambiance is like a standard butcher shop. One side has the deli and the other side has all the fresh and frozen meats, seafood and pies you can buy. The lady that rang me up was nice. Nothing above and beyond. I'll come back to try something different.

I've eaten here several times for lunch. The sandwiches are big ,you can actually make 2 out of the one. I've also purchased the prime rib for special occasions. Along with various side dishes, it always turned out great. The small dining area is great for lunch. The deli has great salads. Home-made tortellini is a fav of mine, so for convenience and parking with good food on the go, I recommend this location

I enjoyed my pastrami sandwich and appreciated the vast selection of delicious, flavorful sandwich meats. My family enjoyed their tri-tip and bologna sandwiches, as well. I love that you actually see the smoker going as you roll up. Easy parking. Not the kind of place that seems to take phone orders but the line seemed to move pretty quickly even for our order of 6 sandwiches. Worth checking out if you're in the area!

Their garlic bread will make you wanna go home and ask your momma why she never made garlic bread like this masterful delight all your life. One of the things that makes BFM special is their sandwiches especially their hot sammy collection. The hot pastrami, steak and chicken sammies smothered in their secret sauce are always a home run! The price point cannot be beat for gourmet Sammie's that will have you hankering for more. Top off a Sammy with their signature Mac salad and you will not be disappointed. Enjoy eating there and take in the hometown comfort of Brentwood's signature butcher shop and deli.

I didn't order food to consume, just came in to grab some steaks and whatever else looked good. The guy at the meat counter wasn't the friendliest. He seemed like he just didn't want to be there. It made me feel a little uncomfy as it seemed that I was bothering him when I would ask him for 2 lbs of this, and 3 lbs of that.

Checked out this spot for the first time this last weekend as my fiance heard they had really good meats/sandwiches. I'll have to agree! I got the tri tip and it was super flavorful and the tri tip was juicy. I definitely favored it over a kinders ball tip sandwich. It is located kinda of in the boonies i think, so it felt like a journey to get over here. But whenever we're in the area I'd def return. I do want to come back to go grab one of their cuts to throw on the grill

We stopped to pick up two sandwiches, and bring it home to eat. When we got home, 40 minutes away, we opened the sandwiches and found that one did not have the tri-tip meat in it. It was just lettuce and tomato - no meat at all. Ok, disappointing but mistakes happen... my husband called to let them know and ask to be refunded and was told no by the manager. They said we could ask for a discount next time we come in... but never took our name or any information so I'm not sure the employee working when we are next in Brentwood will honor that..... And then hung up. Ridiculous customer service and essentially stealing from us by charging us for tri-tip we didn't receive.

We hired Brentwood Fine Meats for our wedding, and would not recommend them for catering, or further supporting their business. We ordered a tray of Mac and Cheese for kids. When all kids were served, adults weren't even allowed to have Mac n Cheese, and the tray mysteriously disappeared, with 90% of the tray left. There was a ton of meat, and people were only allowed to have 1 piece. We had many unhappy, and hungry guests. I would not recommend this business for anything. The father of the bride and mother of the groom were not even given what they asked without attitude.

Good value. Hard to find a complaint about the food. As simple as it is to buy horseradish at a market, I'm surprised there out of our party of four had to go without. Metal chairs scraping on cement may hurt sensitive ears. If we are in the neighborhood we will stop in again.

We ordered both uncooked beef and pork ribs for a bbq a few weeks ago. Sausages as well. All the portions were great. The meat was good and everything cooked the way it should. We had a lot of friends ask where we got the meat. We will be coming back for more. The family pack looks like a great deal. We will be trying that next for our 2nd order at Brentwood Fine Meats. Great first impression with the butcher shop.

Excellent pastrami! I really enjoyed my sandwich which included the horseradish that went perfectly with the meat. The whole portion is a little small but was delicious. Great service at the counter, they were friendly. The ambiance is clean & bright.

Good meat, tri tip for BBQing is especially good...the sandwiches have been disappointing on all attempts I've made to get one. The place is good with meat but not with bread. The biggest problem is the customer service. Almost all employees act like your inconveniencing them by being there. Quick answers to questions and even cut you off before finishing your sentence. Seems like they hire local redneck dbags as a standard practice. The meat products speak for themselves, but it's a chore to get them almost every time.

Used to love this place. They do make the best cheese bread, but the meat selections lately have not been that great. The meat quality seems like it's different. Not as good. Not as flavorful a lot of fat. Just not the same kind of meat that they used to have.

We love this place. Counter deli and butcher side. Deli lunch: Both of us had the tri-tip sandwich on a soft roll with a side of potato salad. You fill out the paper menu for the specific kind of sandwich and it usually takes 10-15 min to prepare. Meanwhile the butcher side has so many goodies from the counter to the marinated meats. He swears by the garlic bread which was okay to me (because we can make this at home) but we had the marinated chicken - both Kona and garlic this time around. Both very good flavor. Note: just check the dates on the packages. We love this place and will come back frequently as possible.

The meat and all the offerings are top notch, the selection is great, even for the sides. The sandwich counter is great also, one negative is the pricing is pretty high, but you get what you pay for. The facilities are clean and neat, staff is friendly and helpful. Definitely worth the trip

I do not know why I have never been to the deli here before, but I definitely have been sleeping on this spot. I have been craving a sandwich my entire pregnancy, and I am very limited to what I can eat, as I can not eat cold cuts without them being heated up. I stumbled across BFM and saw they had hot sandwiches that were right up my alley. I ordered the chicken breast sandwich with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, mayo, and mustard, and it was so delicious and fresh! I topped it off with some jalapeno kettle chips, the pasta verde salad, and a Pepsi. It was the perfect meal and cost me less than 20 dollars, which is unheard of during these times. I will definitely be back to satisfy my sandwich cravings because BFM is the spot to come to. I can't wait to try the tri-trip sandwich next!

Gave this place a try for the first time. I ordered a tri tip sandwich, but no tri tip whatsoever. How do they forget the main ingredient, meat? I paid for a meat sandwich, not a cheese and veggie sandwich. Unacceptable. My husband got a steak sandwich which was made as ordered but he still prefers Kinders steak sandwiches way better. You pay a little more, but get a bigger, better sandwich. We always get the ribeye steak sandwich from Kinders and they never disappoint. At least they never forgot the steak in the Steak Sandwich. I don't think we have any reason to order sandwiches from here again...

Service was a little slow even getting there at 1115a for lunch. But the sandwiches were delicious. Stuffed with meat and veggies. Bottled soft drinks. Very few seats to eat in but we got lucky and really enjoyed the experience. Definitely coming back- and next time, I am bringing a cooler so I can hit the meat market too!

I don't really understand all the hype on Yelp (the positive OR the negative). This place popped up with a high rating and we needed lunch on the way to go boating in the Delta. It started out promisingly enough - with a couple of "smokers" converted barrels really smoking away in the parking lot. I thought I was going to get the pastrami - but it turns out they do NOT smoke it in house (shame). The big hype is around their tri tip. I love a steak sandwich - but tri-tip - no matter how many times I try it - just is never my jam. My husband got the tri-tip sandwich. I got the grilled chicken sandwich. We both had the same bread choice, mine was grilled and better than his, but I would not go out of my way again for a sandwich here. Good news is that they sell my favorite Pepper Plant Sauce.

This is our third year getting our Turkey from Brentwood Fine Meats for Thanksgiving but my first time reviewing. We have been absolutely delighted every year with the quality and flavor of our turkeys. We got the Willie Bird turkey and we will never get another kind. They are super fresh, organic, free range and such great quality. The store itself has a great selection of of high quality fine meats and other delicious items. My husband and I especially love their garlic bread. The service is always great and the staff is friendly and helpful. We will continue to get our turkeys there every year and continue to use them for our various meat and sandwich needs.

Finally had a chance to try Brentwood fine meats via catering! What a local gem! Our hostess went all out and we had practically everything on the menu. My favorites were the juicy, flavorful tri tip, mashed potatoes, and the garlic cheesy bread. I don't even want to guess how many calories are in each piece of that cheesy bread. I would have inhaled half the loaf if no one was looking. From what I heard, BFM was also able to pull off this order in a short amount of time after the original outdoor venue cancelled last minute due to the extended (and second round) shelter in place order. I'm sad I've lived in the area almost six years and have only tried them now. I'll have to make up for lost time and try some of their lunch menu items and pick up some meat for backyard BBQ! I've also heard amazing things about their pot pies. OMG, that cheese by bread tho...don't forget that one's a must!
