The 14 Best Bakeries in Dallas | Eater Dallas

"Find Jenna and Matt Bresnan on Square in McKinney where they make pastries, bread, and bagels that are worth driving to get. However, if that drive is too daunting, the bakery offers a weekly pickup on Saturdays in Dallas, just place a pre-order online. The pastry menu is ever-changing, and the options for bread rotate daily." - Rachel Pinn

Bresnan is one of our favorite bakeries to go to in DFW. It has a great location in McKinney Square where you can walk up to it from anywhere there. They usually sell out pretty quick on the weekends and there's always a line but it's definitely worth it to get there early. Our favorite things to get are the seasonal danishes. Yuzu citrus, blueberry, and pistachio are among our go-tos. They have the best sourdough we've had here. We go for the country sour (oval) and the inside is very airy and springy while the crust is very crunchy. It has the perfect balance and tastes so good straight up or toasted with butter and honey. It's always a great experience going here and it really does feel like a European neighborhood bakery serving up high-quality pastries and breads with a Texas twist.

Google
Friendly staff plus food made with good ingredients. First time I came I had a ham and cheese croissant, which may not sound like anything magical but was especially fantastic mid-ride. Now they have pizza by the slice in the evenings? With hot honey? I’ll be back.

Today was my second time trying this place and it’s so good. The bacon and egg biscuit was delicious. You can’t go wrong with any of the pastries. A little pricey but what place isn’t these days. Excellent customer service also!

Google
I had a cold brew with milk & a croissant with the peach blackberry basil galette. Very flaky and buttery. Kind of expensive but I love the small business vibes. The pizza was a specialty item apparently I didn’t get it but I snapped a pic for the review! Will be back. Coffee was fresh even chilled. So many different pasties, cakes, danishes, etc. service was attentive.

Baked Edible Art. The Lemon Olive Oil cake is moist and delicious and a healthy alternative to traditional cake recipes. The Quiche with a flaked crust is probably the best I’ve ever had. We tried several items and all are world class baked goods. They sell out fast.

Google
Such a great local spot that was needed in McKinney! Updating my review based on my recent experiences! 1. I was obsessed with the croissants but feel like they’re a little drier now. Almond ones are still amazing. The sourdough is always burnt on the top. Idk if it’s meant to be like that but whenever I got it, it was. 2. We got the chocolate pecan pie for our Thanksgiving dessert. I was late to pick it up but we ended up trying it and didn’t like it! It was different than what I expected. The Parker rolls were bomb will get them again! Overall, I still love stopping by! They do amazing pizzas, danishes & other baked goods! Get there early because they do run out of things!

Google
First time trying this out and WOW 🤯 My Italian New Yorker fiancé says this is the best Texas pizza he’s had. I’m a full time baker and was honestly blown away by the baked goods. So two tough critics turned regulars on their first visit 😂 Dangerous to have such good stuff 5 minutes away!! If y’all had a good strawberry matcha latte I think we’d be in there everyday! Great stuff and beautiful place ❤️ Friendly staff

Google
If your eyes are closed and then bite into of any of their pastries, you could easily believe when you opened your eyes you will be at one of Thomas Keller's properties, like Bouchon - it is that good. No stretch of truth. The three adult staff workers matched the quality of the pastries...which made it all the more enjoyable. Although it is take-out only, if it is a decent weather day (like it was yesterday), there are benches and places to sit in close proximity for an al fresco dining experience. You can tell the staff put their all into their product and it comes through in each bite. Congrats to a job very well done.

Yelp
This place is consistently the best bakery I've ever had. The pastries and bread always taste fresh and well-made. Even something as simple as their coffee tastes unlike any other coffee I've had. The staff is also always very helpful, efficient, and informative. They have something special here and I hope that they never stop! We love Bresnan!!! P.s. get the orange cardamom morning bun, it's delicious!

Yelp
4.9 ??? I wanna know who doesn't think this bakery is 5+!!! Wow!!! There aren't enough words to describe all of the delicate delicious breads and pastries at this shop. A French bakery is alive and well on the McKinney Square. There was an actual Frenchman ordering pastries the day we were there - that's a huge nod. If I lived in McKinney, I would eat here every day. We had a chocolate croissant, the monkey bread, a lemon roll & I had a savory quiche. it was tempting to order two of everything. What a gem You will find us here every time we visit McKinney! Very friendly crew and you get to watch them create the magic.

Yelp
I moved to Texas just a little over 2 years ago. Since my arrival, I have been looking for my favorite pastry, Canelé de Bordeaux. In my desperation, I posted on social media and someone responded! She recommended Bresnan Bread & Pastry which is only 15 minutes away from me. The "very" first time I tried this heavenly dessert was years ago in Beverly Hills, California at Jose Andres Bazaar Restaurant inside the SLS Hotel. Ever since then, the Canelé de Bordeaux has become my number one choice in desserts. It's like a Creme Brûlée in Pastry form, with a nice sweet crust outside and a custard-like texture inside. I was so glad to have found Bresnan Bakery & Pastry. I picked up my very first (of many more) orders today. I ordered 10 pieces and ate 2 as soon as I got home. It was baked to perfection! Super yummy!!! It has completed me! Lol! I meant, it has made my move to Texas complete! Now I have everything I need in Texas and will not miss California at all. California who? If you want to order this particular pastry, they only make 12 pieces and only on Saturdays. You must call 3 days ahead of Saturday, if you want to be guaranteed availability. It is labor-intensive to make but the finish product is so worth it! I almost did not want to post this because I do not need the buying competition! Haha!

Yelp
I was on a quest to find sourdough bread and a friend bought me Bresnan's. OMG!!! It's the best I've ever eaten. I live by lake Lewisville and it is worth the drive. The bread freezes wonderfully. I've got several others hooked and have to pick it up for them too. The service is great. I've also gotten it at the Coppell farmers market! They have amazing pastry as well!

Yelp
My husband picked up some croissants, pastries & and quiche. The quiche was meh, but I think we just need to try a different variety next time. The croissants were very good. Love the monkey bread & cheese pastry. So wonderful having a top notch bakery like this in the neighborhood. Will definitely try again. Beautiful and tasty.

Yelp
I consider myself a cheese danish connoisseur. Once you have a Bresnan danish, nothing will EVER taste the same again. You can tell that creativity and love go into every creation. The bread has the perfect combo of crust and softness. You can't go wrong with anything you choose, but go EARLY before they sell out of your favs

Yelp
A great local spot in a picturesque part of town. We went on a Sunday afternoon before they wrapped for the day and we ordered a croissant, pain au Chocolat, latte, and Americano. Everything was impeccable. The croissants were crisp on the outside and insanely tender on the inside. For so much butter, they still tasted light. The coffees were also great- no bitter acidity and sourness. Not a sit-down spot, but cute place to pick-up from. Service was kind and quick. Definitely too good not to return to and I look forward to sampling their other fresh options.

Yelp
This is the cutest bakery in McKinney downtown. Love their croissants, the almond and chocolate one are so good. They also have seasonal vegetable and fruit pastries (savory and sweet), we tried the rhubarb and tarragon pastry which was unlike anything I have ever had. Also wild mushroom and cheese pastry with basil sauce was so so good! We go here often, pick some coffee and croissants and pastries and head to the park with our kid. Love this place! Yet to try their breads! The menu looks so good. Highly recommend thjs place!

Yelp
I had a friend visiting from out of town and she told me she really wanted a cardamom bun. So I went to work to find a place we could go. Bresnan was the one place that kept popping up, so we drove all the way from Carrollton to check out some delicious pastries. We got the orange cardamom bun, the kouign amann, sour cream coffee cake, and cream cheese danish. Everything was so pretty and delicious! I thought the coffee cake was my favorite but the kouign amann really grew on me and was still very good even the day after. It's a bit of a drive from our place but we might be back when we want really good pastries.

Yelp
Just over a year since I've been here and they are going strong. A lot of appetizing,if not pricey options for your morning pleasure. I went for the toasted almond croissant. The choice was hard because everything is literally artisanal gourmet. At $5.75 I hesitated slightly but went for it. Glad I did.... bakery perfection. The only thing keeping away the fifth star is,price a little too high and for counter service that takes 10 seconds,I don't want to see the tip request options on the point of sale device. I stuck a dollar bill in the jar. I recommend you....

Yelp
Every time I'm in downtown McKinney I try to come and get my pastry fix here. This time I also got one of the best oat milk vanilla lattes I've ever had! The staff is always friendly here as well.
google avatar

Tommy C.

Yelp
Love this place. Service is always extremely friendly and their offerings are great. Downside is if you don't get there early on Saturday morning, they will sell out of your favorite treats quick. Snagged a quiche and a blueberry cream croissant this morning. Great reward for myself for getting up early and taking a walk.
google avatar

Rodion L.

Yelp
This place is amazing: their food is so delicious and high quality. Honestly, it's one of the best bakeries I've ever been to. We had quiche, goat cheese and mushrooms danish, almond croissant, and citrus yuzu pastry (was it croissant too?) - each item was amazing. I wish they would have location in Allen, we would become their regulars. Also, the owner and other workers are nicest people. Definitely a must visit place and we will come more, especially if we're in McKinney.
google avatar

Chip Y.

Yelp
Love this place. Get the sourdough! Oh yeah, and the pain au chocolat! The staff is great too. All we need now is a cheese shop and deli next door.
google avatar

Anastasia M.

Yelp
I work up in the McKinney area and when I have early mornings, it's nice to have some sort of coffee shop open in the area. This is one of the coffee shops that is open this early in the morning and let me tell you it does not disappoint! The coffee is delicious! Simple options, but sweet and savory I also tried their French onion soup danish, which sounds a little bit overwhelming, but is actually absolutely amazing! 10/10 recommend and will definitely be trying their other options throughout the year, might have to swing back by before I leave the area to pick up some bread for dinner.
google avatar

Aaron M.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible bakery! Saturday morning 11am , they are mostly sold out. We score a country sour, and the ultimate gingerbread cookie. When they say ultimate, they mean it. This is a sharing cookie full of crystallized ginger. Chewy, dense, soft and spicy. Top five cookie in my life. INCREDIBLE!!
google avatar

Jeff B.

Yelp
I recommend Bresnan bread AND pastry unequivocally. Hands down one of the best breads in the Metroplex and beyond. Croissants hand pies quiches scones. Try anything from your current favorite bakery and you may find a new favorite. Thanks Bresnan team
google avatar

Linda M.

Yelp
First time visit here. I bought a loaf of the classic sour dough! Very good! I've been looking for a sour dough that had a tang and I found it here. Also tried their butter croissant--so flaky and delicious. So many beautiful pastries offered I had difficulty walking away without buying more to try. But, there's always next week!
google avatar

Amanda W.

Yelp
Hands down the best bakery in the area (if not DFW). I have never gotten anything I didn't love. I like that they have seasonal goodies and nothing is too sweet. They also utilize local Texas flour mills that I appreciate.

Lindsay J.

Yelp
The food, staff and prices were 10/10. We LOVE this place and hope to come back! I got a loaf of sourdough bread which was so yummy.
google avatar

Kim H.

Yelp
Their sourdough is amazing. I start tearing into as soon as I leave the store and all the way home. So far have only tried Everything Bagel seasoned and the country (traditional sourdough), but looking forward to trying all the flavors.
google avatar

Polina T.

Yelp
I wish we got here earlier because we arrived around 11:20 on Saturday and they were sold out of quite a bit. Grabbed a blueberry muffin and a latte which was delicious . The muffin is more than enough - I was able to save some for a treat later. I will absolutely be back to try more of their pastries - and earlier next time ! Haha.

Tara S.

Yelp
By far the best bakery in Texas, possibly North America. We have tried bakeries all over and nothing compares! It's our go to spot. The kouign amann and danishes are our favorites but everything we've tried has been great.

Jessica S.

Yelp
Blueberry cream cheese danish and orange cardamom morning bun are delicious! I like their rye bread and multi-seeded grain bread.
google avatar

Julie M.

Yelp
Everything we got was absolutely amazing! The poached pear danish was so good!! This is just a take away bakery with no seating but if you'd like to eat it while downtown, there's tables across the street next to the Cuban spot!

Julie R.

Yelp
I can't tell u how much I love this place!!!!! There is a large staff of enthusiastic, smiling artisans working in view, just behind a short glass wall w good music playing & wonderful light pouring in. My cashier was so passionate about all the various creations. The choices of pastries is glorious and it's almost impossible to choose from. I spent a little time deciding between the Vegetarian Mushroom & Goat Cheese Quiche (deep dish) and the Winter Citrus Pastry w Yuzu Pastry cream in the middle. I got the Winter Citrus Pastry. It was perfect, unique and artistic. I will be back weekly for sure.
google avatar

Roshana G.

Yelp
I have tried this place many times and each time it gets better! What a gem for McKinney, Texas! The butter they use is so high quality european which makes the pastries stand out way higher than the other bakeries! I recommend to get there early before everything is gone!
google avatar

Kristin K.

Yelp
I LOVE this place! The sourdough bread is awesome. Their ham and Swiss croissant is divine. And at Christmas they made a gingerbread cake that I still think about. Their staff is also wonderful. They answer all my questions and while I was going through leukemia treatments, would always check in when either I was able to go in or my sister would drop by on the weekend.
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing pastries! I'm sad and glad I don't live too close by as being a regular here would require more treadmill time. I've only had the ham and cheese croissant twice and both times it was heavenly - perfect amount of butter and crisp. Highly recommend the Bresnan for anyone coming to/living near the Downtown McKinney area in need of a pastry fix.

Paula G.

Yelp
Excellent food! We ordered cinnamon raisin bread, cookies, lemon loaf, special of the day scone, and an egg, bacon and cheese breakfast sandwich on a biscuit. Now I'm not a biscuit girl but good gracious I am now...wonderful! We weren't disappointed with anything. Also the vanilla latte was truly one of the best I've had. Definitely a five star bakery. It is disappointing there is no seating available, on nice days I suppose you could find a bench to enjoy but on this rainy day we unfortunately had to eat in the car. Because aesthetics are high on my list, this was a letdown. Go on a pretty day!

Carla V.

Yelp
We tried Bresnan based on the reviews and they did not disappoint. Our first visit, we had a chocolate almond croissant, a Kouign-Amann and cappuccinos. All was very good. Our second visit, two weeks later, we ordered the multi seed bread, a blueberry muffin and 2 cappuccinos again. The bread was some of the best bread I've ever had and so was the muffin. If you want the bread, you need to get there early because they will sell out. We will definitely return.
google avatar

Rebecca C.

Yelp
Yummy bread and great coffee. We tend to get their sour dough bread weekly. Try the monkey bread it never disappoints!
google avatar

Andrea D.

Yelp
If you're searching for sourdough bread, buttery pastry, or warm service this is the place for you. I have visited several times in the past month and have to say this is a dangerously delicious place to go. Everything I have tried has been wonderful. They are open Thursday to Saturday right now which is probably the best for all waistlines. There are a few benches outside, but I'd recommend walking toward Chestnut Square on a Saturday morning to enjoy your treats while the Farmers Market is in full swing. Keep making those beautiful pastries! We're so glad to have you downtown.
google avatar

Robert P.

Yelp
I come here every week and have tried 90% of their bread/pastries which are consistently high quality. I only wish they were open 7 days per week so I could come more often. The cream cheese danishes are to die for!
google avatar

ella a.

Yelp
Yummmmm! Absolutely ten stars if we could. Food is amazing and I literally day dream about their French baguettes.

Josephine P.

Yelp
Absolutely divine! All I got was one pain au chocolat but it was so delicious and everything you'd expect pain au chocolat to be. The layers were clearly separated, flakey, and buttery. Paired with the chocolate sticks inside, it was perfection. I don't live close to McKinney but I'll most certainly be stopping by anytime I'm in the area. I might even make the trek here if I'm feeling adventurous because the pain au chocolat is so worth it!
google avatar

Marc D.

Yelp
These people know what they are doing! This bakery is as good as any DFW bakery I have been to. Excellent sweet and savory baked good. The breads are good. Great coffees as well. Staff is always super friendly.
google avatar

Brendan M.

Yelp
I just moved to McKinney and was in search of some great coffee and pastries, well I FOUND it!!! This place is amazing. The smell of the fresh bread first thing in the morning got me. There is plenty of selection in the morning, but I was told they sell out fast. Everyone is extremely welcoming and friendly. I even met the owner Matt. What a great guy. Coffee rocks New customer for sure!!
google avatar

Krista L.

Yelp
What a gem! I'm a bread snob and I'm obsessed with their bread. Sooo yummy and just perfect. The pastries were amazing--you MUST try the kouign amann. You can tell they put a lot of heart into this place and you won't be disappointed.

Spencer F.

Yelp
This place is astoundingly good. On par with the best breads and pastries I've had around the world. I go here every Saturday with my kids and they are so kind and welcoming to us every time! Enjoy the delicious standard offerings or go for something a bit unique, you won't be disappointed. Don't forget to grab some hot chocolate for the kids!
google avatar

Brittney H.

Yelp
Before they open, through the window you see them making everything by hand. You open the door and are greeted by the delicious smell of a bakery that you can tell knows their stuff. You order, get your purchases and get in the car the aroma is Devine. You take a bite, the croissant is flaky, crunchy, soft, buttery, melt in your mouth and just flat out heavenly.
google avatar

Danyelle D.

Yelp
I bought A LOT of baked goods for my husband's birthday. EVERYTHING was phenomenal! The Almond croissants were the best I have EVER had in my life (and I am old and have traveled the world). It is a cute little bakery and the people who work there were absolute delights! Had the feel of a different time & place. Could not recommend highly enough

Chelsea A.

Yelp
They have set the bar so high. Absolutely phenomenal service when pre-ordering online. I ordered a pastry assortment and the green chile + cheese bread for a family gathering and it was a HUGE hit - Like it became a topic of long conversation. My family couldn't stop talking about their Kouign Amann pastry - holy moly. The kids loved the monkey bread. Everything was delicious.
google avatar

Dana P.

Yelp
I have been meaning to stop here and finally had the chance yesterday. My daughter was at an art class so I arrived about 15 minutes before they closed and was able to snag 2 pieces of their coffee cake. I waited until today to enjoy it with some coffee and HOLY SMOKES was it incredible!! One day 'old' and that amazing. My husband doesn't really have a sweet tooth and he said to me how delicious it was. I'm excited to go back and try out many more breads and pastries!!! Oh and I think this is my first ever yelp review if that tells you anything!

Walt M.

Yelp
AMAZING! Big fan of scones and Bresnan's Bread & Pastry have the best and the most unique flavors. Looking into the case you basically want everything because it all looks so good. Well last Sunday I came close to taking everything in the case and WOW each pastry I tried was over the top delicious. As I was about to check out it was brought to my attention that they made special desserts for the 4th. So knowing how good everything else is I said sure let me try the chocolate cream pie with caramel drizzle and a pretzel crust! Yes pretzel. So good the family all said one of the best ever. It's worth the trip to downtown McKinney and get there early the best sells out quickly.
google avatar

Nicole C.

Yelp
We were walking to another coffee shop nearby when we passed Bresnan. It's an all glass window view where you can see the bakers rolling, kneading and baking the dough in-house. We checked if they had coffee, and figured we should try it out. They don't allow dogs, so one of us had to sit outside while the other ordered. It's a very clean, minimalist shop which I love. We tried the strawberry basil danish which was delicious, not overly sweet. Also ordered chai with oat milk and cold brew. I wish there were seating options, other than a small bench outside. Luckily, downtown McKinney has a great ambiance and perfect to walk around in while enjoying a coffee.

Steve K.

Yelp
The orange cardamom bun was light/ not to sweet with a great flavor. The Kouign Amman's were also very delicious. First time here, but will definitely be back.
google avatar

Blaire L.

Yelp
Amazing fresh homemade breads & pastries!! Best local bakery in the DFW for sure. Nice owners and staff! Go earlier than later because it's first come first serve & they sell out!
