"Within the charming Georgian hotel that is Number One Townhouse, sits this attractive restaurant which we’d all love to have at the end of our street. It’s the kind of place that warms your heart, run with a genuine friendliness and enthusiasm that’s mirrored by the bright, fresh cooking that can’t help but put a smile on your face. Order three to four of the sharing plates per person and you’ll be treated to great value dishes that burst with flavour – like the buttermilk fried partridge enlivened by pickled shallots and tarragon mayonnaise." - Michelin Inspector

Number One Bruton Review | Hotels Above Par

"Housed in an old ironmonger's shop, the in-house restaurant Briar is a tiny, friendly neighbourhood spot with room for just 18 diners, run by a cheerful, chatty team and led by chef Sam Lomas. The small plates are outstanding — genuinely one of the best meals I’ve had at a boutique UK hotspot this year — celebrating in-season Somerset grains, flora and fauna, from glazed beef cheek to Westcombe cheddar gougères and tahini yoghurt with roasted aubergine and za'atar crisps. The Chardonnay was particularly excellent."

I absolutely loved this restaurant! The small sharing plates are perfect for tasting a bit of everything, and every dish was a delight. The house-made sourdough bread with cultured butter was heavenly, the Westcombe cheddar gougères delicious, and the cold pork neck with quince ketchup both surprising and flavorful. The chocolate dessert was the perfect ending, and the excellent orange wine elevated the whole experience. A truly memorable meal!

Superb quality cooking and ingredients. You can tell that the chef and owners have put a lot of thought into what they’re doing here and it shows. Loved it. Not the cheapest but good value. Would definitely recommend to anyone who appreciates a quality meal and evening out and look forward to going again. The attached hotel (Number One) is really excellent too.

Well, where to start! We could have ordered every item on the menu and nearly did. Perfection on all plates, a great choice for our wedding anniversary. Fresh, local ingredients, thoughtfully prepared and beautifully executed. Staff were delightful and knowledgeable- always a plus! Can’t recommend enough. If the menu appeals, the food will not disappoint. The cheese gougeres and lamb skewers a must. And, the bottle of Domaine de l’Idylle Cruet a perfect accompaniment.

the menu is designed to share - we were recommended 5 plates...we couldn't have eaten more! Each plate was deicious and different...the smoked duck was so tender, perfectly cooked with just the right smokiness. Very relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended.

A truly sublime and memorable meal at Briar. We were a table of 5 so ordered the full menu to share between us. Every single dish was brilliantly executed, presented and clearly thought out. Particular highlights were the lamb skewer, seabass & chocolate marquise. Adrianna & the front of house team went above and beyond with their impeccable service and attention to detail, particularly wine choices and non alcoholic options. I could not recommend Briar enough! Thank you to Sam & the whole team

We celebrated New Year's Eve at Briar and it was nothing short of superb. Four of us had four smaller plates and four larger plates - but went back for an extra lamb as it was so good. The highlight was the pickled celeriac but it was impossible to find fault with a single dish. Add to that a concise but excellent wine list and it made for a truly memorable NYE 2025

The venue is small and intimate, but you don't feel crowded. The service was excellent and all our questions related to the menu were answered accurately. The food itself was sublime with a great variety of starters and mains. Unfortunately we had no room to sample the puddings. There was also a good selection of reasonably priced wines. We would definitely go back!
