The Most Anticipated Restaurant Openings in Boston, Spring 2025 | Eater Boston

"After drawing lines at the Buttery in the South End as a two-year-old bagel pop-up, owner Jordan Renouf has signed a lease to open a first brick-and-mortar shop at 371 West Broadway in South Boston this May. The permanent shop will expand the current menu of bagels and schmears to include open-faced sandwiches and a coffee program; Renouf also plans to keep the South End pop-up at the Buttery running after the new shop opens, and is supporting the buildout with an ongoing crowdfunding campaign." - Erika Adams

The Best Dishes Eater Boston’s Editor Ate This Month | Eater Boston

"After walking into a pop-up at the Buttery on a late Saturday morning, the reviewer bought two bagels (rosemary sea salt and everything) and a small tub of bacon scallion cream cheese. There’s not a lot of room for error in good bagel-making ("are the innards sufficiently soft and chewy? is the exterior just a touch crispy?"), and yes, these bagels hit those marks, but the toppings were where the shop really excelled. "I could smell the toasted rosemary sprigs on my rosemary sea salt bagel straight through the bag," and the "generous showering of sea salt provided pleasant little punches of saltiness in each bite." The asiago is "another must-order" (it was sold out during this visit), and the reviewer watched other customers happily rip into their cheesy bagels over coffee while plotting a next pre-order." - Erika Adams

Line-Inducing Pop-Up Brick Street Bagels Is Moving Into a Permanent Home in South Boston | Eater Boston

"A two-year-old bagel pop-up that has consistently drawn weekend crowds at the South End Buttery is opening its first permanent storefront at 371 West Broadway (corner of E Street) in South Boston later this year. In its pop-up form, the bagel shop sells a tight menu of fluffy bagels with crispy exteriors in a handful of flavors, including asiago cheese and rosemary sea salt; walk by the South End Buttery on weekend mornings and you’ll spot customers posted up at every available space inside the cafe and at its outdoor tables, ripping and dipping warm bagels into to-go tubs of cream cheese. Moving into a permanent shop will allow the operation to expand its menu to include open-faced sandwiches and coffee, perhaps revive the cheesy, saucy bagel pockets, and provide enough space to actually schmear cream cheese onto bagels. Owner Jordan Renouf is running a crowdfunding campaign on NuMarket to raise $100,000 to help cover the costs of opening the storefront. “The building we are moving into is one of the oldest in South Boston, which means it has a lot of charm but also a ton of work that needs to be done,” Renouf tells Eater in an email. “Essentially, we are starting from a place of having four brick walls and needing to build the rest.” The fundraising will help cover basics like new plumbing and electrical work. Renouf hopes to open the new location this May if all goes according to plan; the South End Buttery pop-up will continue to operate in addition to the South Boston storefront. The broader Boston bagel scene is long dominated by decades-old players like Kupel’s in Brookline and Rosenfeld’s in Newton, with newer entrants such as Bagelsaurus in Cambridge and Exodus in Roslindale finding followings; lines at Seaport newcomer PopUp Bagels (a rip-and-dip purveyor with a cult following out of New York) suggest diners remain hungry for more." - Erika Adams

These bagels were FANTASTIC and easily some of the best bagels I’ve had in Boston. Would definitely go back and I’m glad I didn’t have to wait in a long line/they hadn’t run out from going early enough on a weekend! Not sure what the best way to eat them though (slice in half or pull apart)

Amazing people, great bagels! Lox was the butteriest I ever had. Highly recommend the bacon scallion cream cheese and the cheese bagel is my fav.

Brick Street Bagels is a mini bagel shop located in Boston's South End, serving a wide variety of bagels and cream cheeses to the local residents of the area. The service moves quickly, and the staff are very accommodating and friendly, informing us of any ones that were sold out or changes to the menu. We went at around 9:30, and a few were already sold out by then. We tried the everything and plain bagels, with a bacon scallion and plain cream cheese. The cream cheese was delicious, easy enough to scoop with the bagels. The bagels were a decent size for the price, though the plain bagel was a bit hard to chew and eat. The everything bagel was pretty good though, and a bit softer than the plain one.

Weird!!! I can’t understand the hype at all. I’ve had the best of the best all over the country and Montreal. These bagels are SO MEH!! We had four types and two cream cheeses. All boring. My adult daughters felt the same way. We weren’t expecting NY perfection by any means, but the way people go on about these bagels had me dying for them. They are very boring white bread. The scallion cream cheese was very bland with only the tiniest bit of green. Chewy but no good crust. You all go on enjoying them and the weird business model. I’ll drive to Salem.

Fresh, hot out of the oven, fluffy bagels. Love the order ahead, always fresh and delicious. Rotating flavors seems to be consistent week over week, but they’re always great. Only been in the mornings so not sure if they run out of flavors as the day goes by.

One of the best bagel shops in Boston at the moment. The hype around this Boston bagel shop had my expectations high. About a month ago, I decided to try their bagels with a pre-scheduled Saturday pickup. Even though everyone had a secured order, the line for pickup started forming an hour before opening. To pass the time, I grabbed a coffee from South End Buttery and sat on their patio. The perk of being the first in line was that I was able to enjoy fresh hot bagels almost straight from the oven. Both the Cheddar and Sesame bagels had an impeccably pillowy texture with just the right amount of chewiness. The Cheddar bagel, covered in crispy baked cheddar, was one of the most intriguing bagels I've ever had. It was slightly greasy, so it was better enjoyed on its own rather than with cream cheese. The Lox cream cheese I got on the side was light, creamy, and had just the right amount of lox flavor, making it a perfect dip for the sesame bagel. On my second visit, I did a Wednesday morning pickup and found virtually no wait. This time, I tried the Rosemary Salt and Everything bagels. Both were slightly denser, with fewer air pockets than the ones I had a month ago. Given that these bagels are baked in small batches, the quality seemed to vary depending on the day. Despite the slight difference in texture, both bagels were generously covered in their respective seasonings and were good on their own. I also tried the bacon and scallion cream cheese this time, and the large chunks of bacon made it extra enjoyable. There's no doubt these are high-quality bagels. However, the $7 price tag for two bagels feels a tad steep, and the cumbersome ordering and pickup process makes it challenging to consider this a regular spot. Also, having the option to buy a single bagel instead of two would be much more convenient.

I have waited in line for preordered bagels in the rain, in 10 degrees and in super nice weather - these bagels are worth it all!!! The best part of the week is Tuesday around 6 or Thursday at 4 to see if you are able to secure a bagel for the week or the weekend, I have flown these bagels home for my family to try them too. They are always warm, pairing with the cream cheese is always the best & the people serving them are always the kindest!

It is so worth it! By far the best bagels I have had in Boston, and while you may not be able to get them every single week, that’s what makes them so special!! They are delicious and the line moves quick, and everyone is so kind and friendly. My favorite part of my week. I can’t wait to see what they grow into.
