AN ABSOLUTELY MUST DO! 5 STARS! A FREE EVENT & FREE 2 HOUR PARKING! This is one of the Secret Hidden Gems of America that most people have never heard of or been to before! It's Time to jump into The TimeMobile & scour the Earth & take you to places from a different time that you won't believe still exist. We have set the dial to 1908 in the town of Shelburne Falls Massachusetts which is about 100 miles or so outside of Boston. We've landed at this Beautiful Multi Archway Bridge where trolleys cross the Deerfield River. They haul raw materials from the railroad yard in Buckland to the factories in nearby towns. By 1927 the trolley bridge however became obsolete with the invention of motorized vehicles. Eventually the trolley company went out of business. The Bridge couldn't be demolished because it carried a water main between the 2 towns. This bridge could have turned into a decaying eyesore but a local couple, Antoinette & Walter Burnham had a vision. Mrs. Burnham saw wild weeds growing out of that abandoned structure. She said to her husband "if weeds can grow on that bridge, why not flowers?' Walter typed up her idea & requested volunteers & sent it to the local paper. The Shelburne Falls Women's Club responded to the call & took on the project. In April 1929, club members & others moved 80 loads of loam & many yards of fertilizer to the bridge. They replaced weeds with plants they even donated some from their very own gardens. For many years Club members continued the landscaping of The Bridge of Flowers to this very day. In the 1970's it was determined that The Bridge of Flowers needed restoration. In 1979 Eric Temple a resident requested the Women's Club to start a fundraiser for repairing the Bridge. More than 500 organizations, businesses & people joined forces to make this a reality.& for us to enjoy today. This idea was so visionary & decades before it's time. It happened before the words Environment, UpCycle, Recycle, Repurpose & Adaptive Reuse were even in our vocabulary. The Bridge of Flowers is open from April 1- October 31 every day; 24 hours a day. There is No Admission Fee but Donations are Gladly Accepted in the Donation Box. It's a Walking Bridge with Wheelchair Access. It's total length is 400 ft; it's width is 18 ft. The Bridge is Always changing .with new flowers being planted for the first half & then again for the last half of each & every month. So each time you come, you'll have a different experience. Check the website to see What's Blooming before you visit or you can also just stop by & be surprised. In addition to checking out all the flowers & trees on the walkway. Be sure to check out the views too. If you look out from the Bridge to the side where there's an adjacent bridge that view reminds you of quintessential New England. Now if you look out on the opposite side of the Bridge with the green trees are along the River, it looks nothing like New England. It looks like you've been transported to somewhere in Europe. Both views are completely different & beautiful in their own unique way. Since you are in the area check out some of the local eateries, old fashioned pharmacy & bowling alley, The Glacial Potholes, the Town of Shelburne Falls, The Mohawk Trail, the Waterfalls & Native Views Gift Shop with a 20 Foot Indian. See my reviews of some of these for more detailed information.
