18 Places Where You Just Have to Stop and Smell the Flowers

"The Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, is touted as “the only one of its kind in the world.” The 400-foot long bridge is a plant-lover’s paradise, as it’s covered in flowers expertly planted to ensure they bloom continuously from April to October. The bridge’s famous flora includes 500 varieties of flowers, vines, and shrubs, many of the rare or historical varieties. The plants, which hug either side of the narrow walkway across the bridge, are labeled to satisfy the curiosity of interested visitors. The bridge was built for trolleys in 1908. In 1929, after the railway went out of business, the structure was reborn as the Bridge of Flowers. In 1983, it was completely renovated at a cost of a half-million dollars and under the expertise of a local horticulturalist. Today, its upkeep relies on a paid gardener and volunteer help from the Shelburne Falls Women’s Club." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Experience a beautiful bridge adorned with flowers and enjoy a stunning view of the river. It's a great time to explore the downtown area, where you can grab a bite to eat at one of the delis and take some cool photos. You won’t be disappointed! However, parking can be tricky; you might need to park some distance from the bridge entrance or further uptown, as there isn't a designated parking area. The area is wheelchair-friendly and walkable. And no entrance fees.

Google
Perfect place to take a walk if you’re driving through the area. Beautiful old bridge.

Brenda Christensen

Google
Beautiful. It was about to be under construction when I went. It was still pretty. Although talking to a local she expressed they had moved flowers with intention of construction. It was still beautiful. The little downtown area is really fun to visit with all kinds of little shops and easy walking.

Google
Interesting place, lots of history about the bridge and how the local people saved it from being destroyed back in the day. The gardens are so pretty and there are shops and restaurants nearby. Easy to park and nice walk across the water. Would love to go back.

Google
The Bridge is currently closed for restoration. It’s been a lovely stop for travelers passing through the Berkshires. Flowers planted for blooming spring through early fall. Truly unique and lovely.

Google
I loved this little walk. There's a public parking lot and street parking. It's an easy walk and so worth the stop. We stopped in early October and I didn't think there would be many flowers but I was pleasantly surprised! There's also the Glacial Potholes across the road and a cute little town with shops, a bookstore cat, coffee shop & restaraunts .

Google
Shelburne falls is a pretty town. It's hard to believe western mass and Eastern mass are in the same state. Western mass is laid back and still a hippie scene. It's great for outdoor enthusiasts.

Leda A.

Google
A beautiful place I stumbled across while driving through the state. I saw a sign on the highway, looked it up and made my way. It absolutely did not disappoint. So many varieties of flowers, and so many different amazing fragrances from each.. it was just incredibly peaceful and happy moment to savor as you walk through. Worth a quick stop.

Yelp
Great to walk by, but a 1 minute stop so don't go out of your way to go to it. Pictures show it all. It is nice and scenic. There are a couple of restaurants right near, and a cute little general store and an ice cream shop across the street. Right near the bridge. Very cute little off the beaten path town.

Yelp
Beautiful!! Made a trip out just to walk over this bridge. Flowers of all kinds are in full bloom... trees are blossoming. Walking areas and shops on either side... and then there is a suspension bridge laterally !! Would recommend walking both directions (over each bridge)... and also making some time to walk through nearby shops. Town is lovely and safe!! Reminds me of NH/VT but a little 'nicer' if you may :)

Yelp
This was really pretty! I bet it was amazing in the spring, but it is still worth going in the fall.
google avatar

Paul Francis M.

Yelp
Only up here for the 8k race but absolutely love walking through town and over the bridge and admire all the beautiful foliage!

Yelp
AN ABSOLUTELY MUST DO! 5 STARS! A FREE EVENT & FREE 2 HOUR PARKING! This is one of the Secret Hidden Gems of America that most people have never heard of or been to before! It's Time to jump into The TimeMobile & scour the Earth & take you to places from a different time that you won't believe still exist. We have set the dial to 1908 in the town of Shelburne Falls Massachusetts which is about 100 miles or so outside of Boston. We've landed at this Beautiful Multi Archway Bridge where trolleys cross the Deerfield River. They haul raw materials from the railroad yard in Buckland to the factories in nearby towns. By 1927 the trolley bridge however became obsolete with the invention of motorized vehicles. Eventually the trolley company went out of business. The Bridge couldn't be demolished because it carried a water main between the 2 towns. This bridge could have turned into a decaying eyesore but a local couple, Antoinette & Walter Burnham had a vision. Mrs. Burnham saw wild weeds growing out of that abandoned structure. She said to her husband "if weeds can grow on that bridge, why not flowers?' Walter typed up her idea & requested volunteers & sent it to the local paper. The Shelburne Falls Women's Club responded to the call & took on the project. In April 1929, club members & others moved 80 loads of loam & many yards of fertilizer to the bridge. They replaced weeds with plants they even donated some from their very own gardens. For many years Club members continued the landscaping of The Bridge of Flowers to this very day. In the 1970's it was determined that The Bridge of Flowers needed restoration. In 1979 Eric Temple a resident requested the Women's Club to start a fundraiser for repairing the Bridge. More than 500 organizations, businesses & people joined forces to make this a reality.& for us to enjoy today. This idea was so visionary & decades before it's time. It happened before the words Environment, UpCycle, Recycle, Repurpose & Adaptive Reuse were even in our vocabulary. The Bridge of Flowers is open from April 1- October 31 every day; 24 hours a day. There is No Admission Fee but Donations are Gladly Accepted in the Donation Box. It's a Walking Bridge with Wheelchair Access. It's total length is 400 ft; it's width is 18 ft. The Bridge is Always changing .with new flowers being planted for the first half & then again for the last half of each & every month. So each time you come, you'll have a different experience. Check the website to see What's Blooming before you visit or you can also just stop by & be surprised. In addition to checking out all the flowers & trees on the walkway. Be sure to check out the views too. If you look out from the Bridge to the side where there's an adjacent bridge that view reminds you of quintessential New England. Now if you look out on the opposite side of the Bridge with the green trees are along the River, it looks nothing like New England. It looks like you've been transported to somewhere in Europe. Both views are completely different & beautiful in their own unique way. Since you are in the area check out some of the local eateries, old fashioned pharmacy & bowling alley, The Glacial Potholes, the Town of Shelburne Falls, The Mohawk Trail, the Waterfalls & Native Views Gift Shop with a 20 Foot Indian. See my reviews of some of these for more detailed information. It used to be, you had to have Mega Bucks & be really Rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've been Upgraded. Now You Can Live Like a King on a Limited Budget!

Yelp
Shelburne falls itself is very cute and this bridge is also adorable. It's kinda short though and is literally just a long garden. Nice views but I wouldn't travel here just to see this bridge. If you do come to Shelburne falls visit the local candy store! McCusker's Market and the Pharmacy which has a little soda fountain.

Yelp
I drove 3 hours to visit and arrived at 7 am. I went July 25th or so. There wasn't even a coffee shop open. It's like a desert town. It was not what I envisioned. Although scenic it is a small path and throughout it there were potted flowers too. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit but I'm glad that I can check it off my list.

Yelp
I came here with my girlfriend for a nice stroll on a Saturday. I wasn't sure what to expect but had only heard good things about BoF so I thought I might as well use the opportunity to take my lovely girlfriend for a stroll. We got to the place around 2pm and there was an ample amount of parking spots available (free). The bridge itself is beautiful and very relaxing. It is definitely a nice tribute to the town and war veterans. I wish I lived nearby more often so I can take my girl here on a regular basis. EXPERIENCE: 10/10

Yelp
We've come by here a few times during COVID, but it has been closed. We were pleased in October to find it was open. It was absolutely stunning and a beautiful walk admiring the town and all of the beautiful flowers. Highly recommend if you're in town or nearby!!

Yelp
This was a really cool little attraction that we stopped by sort-of spur of the moment over the weekend. We had been out and about and my daughter-in-law (who we were visiting in Vermont) mentioned hearing about it, so I looked it up on google, plugged it into the GPS and we went to go check it out. We rolled into town, found parking right near the bridge entrance and took a stroll across. The flowers and gardens planted all along this reclaimed trolley bridge looked beautiful, the river was peaceful and enjoyable and it was all well maintained. There were labels on some of the plants and flowers so you'd know what you were enjoying, and even the most beautiful vines were growing around the lamp posts. We made a loop around walking back over the other bridge and then walked through town. We found a neat little diner and decided to stay for dinner. Then we walked back across the car bridge, got some delicious ice-cream and again enjoyed another wonderful stroll across the Bridge of Flowers. The weather was perfect and we really had a splendid time with our family, taking in all the sites of the relaxing and pretty Bridge and it's surrounding town. I highly recommend it if you're in the area.

Yelp
This is a beautiful attraction spanning the Deerfield River. I came here on a surprise date and was absolutely blown away by how beautiful the location and flowers were. You can tell that this bridge is world renowned because many of the signatures in the guest book are from other states and even other countries. Even more beautiful is the fact that the bridge is dedicated to veterans of Shelburne of several wars. I would love to come back here when it's warmer out and more of the flowers are in bloom!
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
Beautiful perennial gardens on an old trolley bridge across the Deerfield River. One of the main highlights of Shelburne Falls!

Carole L.

Yelp
Beautiful. Love the story behind the bridge. The village has lots history. Nice side trip on my to Baked Bakery.
google avatar

Bill T.

Yelp
An aptly named attraction, this is literally a bridge with flowers all over it! A repurposed trolley bridge, from spring through fall the bridge is covered with a riot of color and texture. A wide variety of flowers adorns almost every inch of the bridge on either side of a narrow cinder path. You can really see the love and care that go into maintaining this beautiful living work of art. I had to walk over it twice just to get the full impact. You really have to see this to appreciate it...the pictures just don't do it justice.
google avatar

Allie C.

Yelp
Closed due to COVID but looks like it would be a nice place to stop during a long drive
google avatar

Yelp
What a wonderful and beautiful attraction to have in Shelburne Falls! I remember seeing this Bridge many, many years ago - probably 40 years ago as a little kid. It popped in my memory during my recent visit. This time, however, I walked the bridge, took some photos, and stopped and took a phone call while sitting on a bench on the bridge. The variety of flowers and the range of colors were mesmerizing! Very peaceful and enjoyable!
google avatar

Steven B.

Yelp
I have friends that live in Shelburne Falls and after visiting them we drifted by the BoF. It was October so of course we were not expecting it to match the spring and summer visits. Boy, were we wrong. They do a great job keeping the color up with many still in bloom. Yes, we would recommend visiting this trolly bridge turned garden in the spring and summer, but don't forget the fall. Well worth the trip!
google avatar

Don P.

Yelp
The Bridge of Flowers is an arched footbridge 400' x 8' approximately, spanning the Deerfield River in Shelburne Falls. A wide awry of multicolored flowers and plants are planted and beautifully maintained throughout the season on either side of the span as you walk across. It has been a tourist attraction in this area for decades; yesterday was no exception because it was Columbus Day the foot traffic was unusually dense and crowded. The Fall is my favorite time to visit, the weather is perfect and the flowered bridge is surrounded by the natural colors of Autumn. The ride along the Mohawk Trail from Greenfield to Shelburne is beautiful this time of year making Shelburne Falls the perfect Fall destination.
google avatar

Cha Cha W.

Yelp
Slap me silly, am I seeing clearly? *Rubs eyes*...somebody grew an arboretum on a bridge? The queuing up of people to walk across this bridge was ridiculous. I heard about this place and it was only like a 1 minute detour off the Mohawk Trail to North Adams. Well worth a visit if you're in the area. Walk across the steel bridge adjacent for the best view but walk across The Bridge for an unique experience. I'll let the photos do the talking.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
A unique and interesting day-trip destination for anyone in Western Mass. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting in the area or to photographers. Some of the blooms were as large as my face! Kudos to the volunteers who tend to the Bridge of Flowers.

Filberte D.

Yelp
Very beautiful spot. Almost proposed there, ended up getting married there instead. The garden is well maintained. It takes about 20 minutes to walk across (slowly and taking time to look at the flowers). At the end of the bridge is the west end pub - a great spot to grab a drink, situated right on the water.
google avatar

Elli M.

Yelp
This is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to in my life. It's a beautiful botanical garden on an old stone bridge with great views of the river and historical village buildings. Words can't even begin to describe the beauty and peacefulness of this place.
google avatar

Stephen A.

Yelp
It's exactly what it sounds like. It's a bridge, and it has flowers, it's a bridge of flowers. Now the history around it is pretty cool and it connects two of the most quaint towns of MA that I've ever been to and the view is so incredible. Definitely a must stop if just sight seeing or even road tripping, the total stop may only take 30 minutes! Very much worth it
google avatar

Cassidy P.

Yelp
Hahahahaha! I nearly bust a gut when I saw that someone actually reviewed the Bridge of Flowers! Aww, my lil' hometown is *famous*! What the hell is the Bridge of Flowers, you ask? It's a beautiful little foot bridge that used to be a trolley bridge. It's got these beautiful arches and is covered in flowers, so it's pretty to see both on the bridge itself as well as from the Iron Bridge (right next to it). Well worth a look if you happened to be in the middle of nowhere--I mean, if you're in western Mass... ;)
google avatar

Kathy D.

Yelp
5 stars is not enough for Bridge Of Flowers! I never even knew this place existed until our whitewater rafting guy told us we have to go. Wow! The beauty of this place is undescribable. You have to see it for yourself. Pristine, flowers in bloom and just gorgeous. It's a photographer's dream and a florist's like myself! We even got free parking right in the front of the entrance on the street. We loved it so much we're coming back in two weeks!!!!
google avatar

Caring C.

Yelp
My favorite stop in Western Mass in the spring-this bridge is a free and beautiful must-go!

D M.

Yelp
Kinda neat that you can see the names of flowers to determine if you like for your own garden. Older couple turned this old trolley bridge in to a walking flower garden bridge.
google avatar

Ann E.

Yelp
Finally got here after 5 years of wishing!! So beautiful. Highly recommended. Will return again. I imagine the gardens changing with the seasons. Definitely worth the trip!
google avatar

Alison W.

Yelp
The Bridge of Flowers is one of our favorite places to visit. We try to see it every year or two because being garden lovers it really inspires us to plant new things at home. It is very well maintained and beautiful. The Town itself has nice stores to buy a souvenir or gift and nice places for a bite to eat or snack on. Don't forget your camera for many photographic moments.
google avatar

Steven H.

Yelp
World famous for its beautiful flowers. It's where I took Nancy on one of our early dates. Now that we live in town we make sure to take our walks along this lovely bridge as often as we can. It's an amazing transformation from an old trolley bridge to a garden paradise. Fun additions to this location - you can still ride the original trolley on summer weekends in the rail yard at the Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum. You can waive to kayakers under the bridge. You can eat dinner at the West End Pub right at the end of the bridge, or get an ice cream at Mo's Fudge Factor across the street. The Bridge of Flowers is an anchor point for a town full of neat places.
google avatar

Naomi U.

Yelp
This is so lovely. It just goes to show what a bit of vision ingenuity and community intention can accomplish! If you do visit SF go see the glacial potholes nearby...standing on a rock ledge, which would be in the water, if it were higher is really cool too.
google avatar

Craig B.

Yelp
OK. Get your sorry butt off the sofa and get over to the Bridge of Flowers. Not the most creative title, but decades before New York City decided to renovate an old elevated railroad bridge into the High Line, Shelburne Falls decided to turn an abandoned trolley bridge into a lush fragrant walkway that draws more than 30,000 visitors a year. The bridge never disappoints. Shelburne Falls is charming and it's fun to walk across the river. The bridge itself is meticulously maintained by a small army of dedicated volunteers. There is always something blooming, usually a few things that you've never seen before or don't see very often. It's a very creative use of space.
google avatar

Dan R.

Yelp
The Bridge of Flowers has to be one of my favorite places to go in the spring, summer, and fall! Each season brings new flowers and it is incredible to see how much work the community puts in to making this place special. What I appreciate about the Bridge of Flowers is not just the incredible flowers they have but also the fact that it is such a great place to sit and reflect. I love taking time to sit on their benches and just listen to the water flow underneath the bridge itself. in the fall the foliage in the area is incredible as well, which only adds to the beauty of this space. Moral of the story, don't miss out on this special place!
google avatar

Laura C.

Yelp
What a pretty place. I love the entire concept. Its always meticulously groomed and there are lots and lots of flowers to look at. I like to come every few weeks to see whats blooming at that time. I always bring my visitors here so they can experience the beauty too. Theres a spot for donations... Hint hint. Even a dollar will do :)
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
This is one of the most unique places I've ever encountered. It literally is a bridge of flowers. An old bridge that was abandoned and repurposed to have a garden on both sides with a walking path in the middle that you can take across the river. I feel like this is the original highline! I was fortunate enough to go in May, so the flowers and plants were very much alive and thriving. There was so much color and pleasant flower scents. Its free to walk across although I believe there were donation boxes on either side. Its very worth it to stop if you are in the area, as I was driving through and saw the signs and though I would check it out. The towns on either side ( I believe each side is a separate town) are very cute and have little restaurants and stores to check out.
google avatar

Jimmy J.

Yelp
Such a beautiful place to take a walk. My daughter loves it here. There is always a volunteer or two working to maintain the beautiful flowers here. Saw one lady, who's apparently illiterate, walking her damn poodle on the bridge. Really? Leave your dog at home. Otherwise a beautiful place on a cool fall morning. This is what western mass is all about!

Brittany E.

Yelp
The bridge was closed because covid. There was absolutely no reason to close it. The other bridge in town had one way traffic so the bridge of flowers could have definitely done the SAME THING! I have been going to the bridge of flowers for over 25 YEARS and it has never been so busy that people couldn't safely socially distance from each other. I typically give a very generous donation in the donation box. Well not this year and I hope no one else contributes a single penny. The town of Shelburne falls had a bunch of signs saying to wear masks even outdoors. It was absolutely RIDICULOUS! It's not like you are walking in NYC! Shelburne Falls has less than 2000 residents. Outdoors no masks should be required. Unreal! I'm not sure when/if I will go back. But it was a huge disappointment to drive out to see the glacier potholes & the bridge of flowers just for it to be closed! Shame on you whoever decided to close it!
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
A bridge? Flowers? Sign me up. This bridge of flowers is located in one of the most beautiful parts of Massachusetts. A part of Massachusetts I don't get out to often enough. I'd like to make it out this way more often. Much more often. If you find yourself anywhere remotely near this part of Massachusetts, you should visit the Bridge of Flowers. You won't regret it.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
What a neat place! The bridge is beautifully lines with flower gardens on each side. Honeybees hop from flower to flower as you stroll over the peaceful river below. Very serene and pretty. It's worth a stop and the nearby artsy stores are a good take too.
google avatar

Lisa D.

Yelp
What a unique experience! The colors, the scents...it's a feast for all senses. Entirely seasonal this literal bridge 'garden' is planted with so many flowers my mind was blown! This year I am told the colors and blooms are exceptionally beautiful. (not to mention the 'aroma-therapy!) If you find yourself on a field trip across Massachusetts along Rt. 2 this is a VERY worthy stop even if you are only a random admirer of 'things botanical.' If you are a Botantical-Freak this may be worth a couple-hour drive...the surrounding community offers up a chance to; shop for wine, enjoy a lovely healthy sandwich at a local health food store, sip coffee at a nearby coffee roaster...all in all it's a GREAT destination to build a day around. (see my other Shelburne Falls reviews) Depending upon how much you 'fawn' over the blooms it takes 5 min to 30 mins to cross the bridge. Parking nearby is two hours and costs nothing! I liked it so much did it twice! :)
google avatar

Zoe K.

Yelp
Very unique and beautiful to walk through at sunset. Definitely worth stopping for, although it won't take too long to walk down.
google avatar

V C.

Yelp
Among the best sights to see along the Mohawk Trail. More than the utter stunning beauty of a former trolley bridge repurposed decades ago into a walkway flanked by flowers and trees, the Bridge of Flowers really shows how dedicated a town to its traditions can be.
google avatar

Irving W.

Yelp
Just a great place to be outside, take your time, and literally smell the roses. Nestled inside of a cute village, this bridge is pretty much the centerpiece. Take your time and enjoy. You will be glad that you did.

K P.

Yelp
Beautiful but when there's a ton of people it takes away from the majestic feel of it, great location right next to the potholes!

Blake V.

Yelp
It's awesome and perfect a bridge of flowers and the air is fresh. There's nice little spots to sit or stand, and the view is great. What more could ya ask for?
google avatar

Anrana S.

Yelp
If you find yourself driving route 2 in western Mass, definitely take the detour down to Shelbourne Falls to see the bridge of flowers. Even though it tends to be a bit busy, you can take your time to stroll, admire the flowers, admire the view and even smell the flowers. Wonderfully peaceful way to spend an hour on Axum er afternoon.
google avatar

Dan G.

Yelp
Such a cool little pedestrian bridge. If you are ever out exploring, it is worth finding these kinds of attractions. Ufortunately the day I went was rainy, but it didn't take away from the beauty of the colors and flowers that surround you.
google avatar

Day Trips I.

Yelp
We actually spent the day in Shelburne Falls and took the time to visit the Bridge of Flowers on our way to eat in town. It is so beautiful and I thought it was a superb idea. I am glad it is well taken care of and that there is a committee that keeps it going year after year. Read our entire day trip recap in Shelburne Falls here with a video of the Bridge of Flowers http://www.daytripsinnewengland.com/2010/08/day-trip-to-shelburne-falls-massachusetts/

Yelp
How beautiful! A pleasant surprise in a beautiful little town. Th bridge is actually much larger than I expected so if you are in the area (or if you aren't in the area but enjoy looking at gardens/flowers) it's worth stopping by. Can't beat the price - free!
