Where to Eat and Drink in Oceanside

"At the end of the iconic Oceanside pier, restauranteur power couple Jessica and Davin Waite opened the long-awaited fish-and-chip shop this past summer after extensive renovations. Chef Rachel Hurley works wonders in the compact kitchen, slinging battered fish and sea animal fries. Look out for the daily specials, showcasing daily catches in plates like sashimi aqua chile." - Helen I. Hwang

22 Stellar Spots for Waterfront Dining in San Diego

"Oceanside Pier now has its own “chippy,” offering fish and chips complete with mushy pea sauce, sea animal fries, and raw fish specials. The husband-wife team behind Wrench and Rodent Seabasstropub and the Plot have taken over an outdoor kiosk to entice people to the end of the pier with their seafood specialties and panoramic views." - Helen I. Wrench & Rodent’s Sustainable Seafood Shack Lands on the Oceanside Pier | Eater San Diego

"Located at the end of the 1,942-foot-long Oceanside Pier — the longest on the West Coast — the Brine Box operates out of a 109-square-foot kiosk with some nearby bench seating, and its mobile-focused menu was created by Jessica and Davin Waite. Inspired by an English "chippy" but decidedly San Diegan in execution, the menu adheres to the Waite’s zero-waste, sustainable seafood approach: local halibut is beer-battered for their fish and chips served with crispy fries and classic mushy peas; a seared fish of the day tops the “sea-animal fries” made in the style of In-N-Out; salads are offered with seared garlic-ponzu albacore or sustainably-farmed jumbo prawns grilled and tossed in Korean barbecue sauce; there’s also a Spam, egg, and cheese sandwich on a milk bread bun with anchovy aioli, plus raw fish dishes, vegan options, and frequent specials featuring seasonal catch from area waters." - Candice Woo

More Intel on Davin Waite’s Seafood Shack Coming to the Oceanside Pier | Eater San Diego

"Nearing completion and set to open by early June at the end of the iconic Oceanside pier, this 109-square-foot walk-up kiosk, the Brine Box, is the Waite couple’s fourth Oceanside restaurant and will sit adjacent to the larger, still-empty building that previously housed Ruby’s Diner. Modeled after a “chippy” — the casual English seaside fish-and-chip shops chef Davin grew up visiting in northeast England — it will serve Waite’s take on classic fish and chips with mushy peas and chips (fries) with curry or cheesy truffle sauce, plus anchovy avocado toast, tuna chorizo elote, Spam, egg and cheese sandwiches, chowder-topped tater tots, and grilled whole fish on sticks. Chef de cuisine Rachel Hurley will collaborate with Waite on a takeout-style menu of raw and cooked seafood dishes highlighting local, sustainable fish and shellfish from area fishermen and purveyors, alongside plenty of vegan items." - Candice Woo

Fish & Chips with Bread Pudding, a most perfect meal on all points! The dips options of tartar sauce and addicting MALT VINEGAR (!?!) were simply stupendous. Plentiful and meaty the 2 pieces of the Yellow Fish 🐠 catch of the day! The fresh homemade cream on the velvety bread pudding with macerated berries is stellar. This place takes Foodies seriously… thank you!!

Visited on Saturday and was served quickly. I had the sea animal fries and they were delicious! The fish and chips, are amazing too. There is little to no seating, so be prepared to eat while walking along the pier or bring chairs to sit and eat on the pier. Highly recommend and will definitely visit again.

Fish and chips was fantastic. $20 (including tax and tip, about normal these days). Their tartar sauce is WAY better than anyone else's, and has a slight kick to it, making it special. Can't beat the view either. Benches, but no tables to sit and eat however.

Quick bite on the ocean. This spot is so perfect, very friendly hostess and fast service too. What's better than the ocean view here. I ordered fish and shrimp tacos, and they are amazing! Definitely stop by when you are in oceanside!

4.5 stars. This is a small shack at the pier. They have a fairly extensive menu than I expected for the space. We got the Vietnamese shrimp po boy with shrimp and with tempura carrots for the veggie option, and the chilequiles. The portions were definitely filling. They presented the food in compostable boxes, which is great! The food was delicious! The sauce in the po boy had the perfect kick to it. The tempura was very light. The fries were spiced, which is always a plus. The main drawback is the lack of tables to sit. There are 3 only. The ocean view is obviously beautiful but it was a little chilly in the shade, so get a jacket. The girl at the counter was very friendly. I definitely recommend them for their food and service. You probably want to find a different place to sit and eat.

Although it is a very small food stand with some seating nearby, the food was fantastic. By far, the best shrimp tacos and ceviche I have ever eaten. The classic chowder was also exceptionally good. A+++

Great fish stand at the end of the pier. The fish is incredibly fresh and the flavors are impressive. The shrimp salad did still have the shell and tail on, which is an odd choice. But the shell was edible and the flavor was a nice spicy Korean bbq. The fish Sando was chargrilled just lightly, which was perfect. And the macaroni salad screamed summer. They have tables and benches to sit at. They also have water if you just need some water. The breeze is lovely. It’s an all around wonderful experience!!

I've been waiting for this place to open! Let me tell you, it did not disappoint! The food was super fresh and so good! This little gem is right next to the old ruby diner. I tried the local blue fin tuna sashimi. It was paired with pickled cucumber, yellow beets, zucchini stem, smokey stone fruit glaze, and ogo seaweed. The tuna melted in your mouth and is definitely a must try! I also had to try the seasonal salad with prawns! It was a perfect meal for a nice sunny day. The salad had mixed greens, peaches, red onions, cherry tomatoes, and smokey yuzu vinegar dressing. I loved the prawns, but if I got this again, i would try the albacore. The prawns need to be peeled, which got a little messy. If I had a place to sit and eat, this would definitely be ideal. But the peaches went so well with the shrimp! All and all the gentlemen was helpful and friendly at the cashier, and the food came quickly. What better way to enjoy the pier than fresh local catch with masterful pairing. Can't wait to be back! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
