Metro Detroit’s Best Oysters | Eater Detroit

"This simple, down-to-earth Grosse Pointe Park seafood restaurant has a small menu that packs a big punch. Oysters come by the dozen and are market price. For diners who don’t want to put back a dozen oysters, the restaurant also has a special deal: three raw oysters and a glass of bubbly for $22. And if you’re not yet ready to venture into raw shellfish, consider ordering Brine’s crispy fried oyster bao with pickled vegetables, hoisin, and a rich sesame chile aioli. You can book a table on Resy." - Danny Palumbo

Went to dinner tonight at Brine, I’ve lived in Grosse Pointe for 12 years somehow never heard of or been here. It was outstanding, perfect atmosphere, perfect vibes, amazing service and great food. We had Michelle as our server and couldn’t ask for a better time. Knew the drinks and menu, great recommendations and a good sense of humor. It’s not cheap but you get what you pay for. 100% will be back soon.

First time going today and it won't be the last! The happy hour items were delectable and from a scratch kitchen. Service was great from the manager and bar tender. Everyone was pleasant and the atmosphere was esthetically pleasing. I'll be coming back soon!

Google
We had heard mixed reviews, but left very impressed with Brine. We had the mahi mahi and scallops - both were delicious and so fresh! The service was attentive, but not overbearing. We went later in the evening and it was a fantastic dinner.

I have been to Brine several times in the past and decided to take a few girlfriends there this weekend after really hyping it up only to find out.... New menu and new chef that have not been advertised or posted online. The new menu was mehhhh. To start, we received cornbread which threw us all off - was this turning into a southern meal or soul food? (the Parker house rolls used to be divine). Also removed from the apps was the oysters&bubbles deal which was a perfect starter. A Caesar was added to the menu (who doesn't love a Caesar?) however, the taste of anchovies was VERY overpowering. Lobster pasta was confusing: oversized noodles wrapped around lump crab(could have made them into ravioli pockets or done larger chunks in a sauce) and left a LOT to be desired. Menu mentioned broccolini and instead we were served green beans without any warning of the change. I am no chef so I am always grateful for the hands cooking but the place was half full at 7pm on a Saturday and I'm not sure this menu will help turn that around.

Wow! We will be back. Celebrated an anniversary. Absolutely delicious. We did the Market for Two- totally worth it. Cocktails were multi-faceted & the best I’ve had in MI.

Google
The first thing that jumps out at Brine immediately is the ambience. The interior is drop dead gorgeous. Not to be outdone by the interior the service was top notch as well. Our server was so kind and offered so many helpful suggestions to our oyster rookie group. The oysters were delightful and our meals were cooked and prepared to perfection. We loved our time at Brine and we will be back.

Google
From the moment we walked in the staff was welcoming. The atmosphere was extremely inviting, our server was very kind and accommodating to our special request. The oysters were so fresh, I felt like I was eating them fresh out of the ocean.

Google
Well, it was good! 4.50 per oyster was a bit much for a typical oyster bar; though good oyster experience. Main dishes were good, nothing to really write home about. Large plate Food came Out in portion sizes.

Yelp
First time going and I went to experience the Tuesday prix fixe menu. The restaurant is beautiful, service is pleasant and attentive, but the meal -- like many of the reviews I'm seeing -- was hit and miss. Beef tonnato starter was good although my server mistakenly kept referring to it as tartare (which is minced and raw, whereas tonnato is of slices of rare prepared beef). The bread service was confusingly bad. Hot, steamy buttered bread was encased in foil and I had to peel the buttered portion from the foil, just to be met with the soft soggy bread. Decent flavor but still...mushy bread is unappetizing. "Caesar" salad didn't read to me as that, mostly because a toum-like garlic sauce was used rather than caesar dressing -- plus the combined flavors just didn't taste close to it, but it was a good salad. Last and unfortunately least successful, the "cacio e pepe risotto" with scallops; this dish lacked the creamy consistency of both cacio e pepe and risotto. The cacio cheese flavor barely came through over the pepper, but worst was how wet and loose the risotto was. The cheese crisp (also featured in the salad) made an unnecessary 2nd appearance here. The scallops were delicious, but not enough to save the watery risotto. I soooo wanted to like this place. Gorgeous spot and I'd been drooling over their IG posts for months. If I deign to come back, maybe it'll just be oysters and wine.

Yelp
Wow! Amazing ambiance, service, cocktails, and food! We came here for Valentine's Day and were not disappointed. Our server gave us great recommendations for the oysters (selection listed in images) and it did not disappoint. Everything was cooked perfectly, we will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Best Brunch in Metro-Detroit! By far. And I'm only limiting it to that because we haven't been here yet for dinner. But we've done the brunch several times now and keep coming back for the chef's unique preparations, constant innovation, and terrific ingredients. Our first trip to Brine we got into a discussion with him about the provenance of the grits! The chef was happy to share. That's cause this is one special grit friends - and not a Quaker Quick Grit. The fabulous shrimp and grits here shines as a result. If you ask, you discover all sorts of interesting, sourcing information. The coffee is from the very good purveyor James Oliver of Detroit; the oysters are from different places weekly. This past Sunday, they were all of northeast origin. One, I noted was from Truro in Cape Cod, where we've spent occasional summers. Like any good chef, Brine's has the entrées of the moment on the day's menu but others which are just as good held in reserve. Last Sunday I had the crabcake Benedict while my friend had the English breakfast with nicely browned pork belly. But in weeks past we've had The duck croquette, the Shak Shuka, and we've sampled others with our eyes as they've breezed past us that look just as good. So come have some oysters, sit at the bar in a carefully curated New Orleans pub atmosphere, have a spicy bloody Mary or two and immerse yourself in a unique experience of high-quality food, preparation, and great stories to boot!

Yelp
Loved the vibe. It felt like being in New Orleans. Fantastic service. Now for the food! The mimosa flight was delightful. Eggs Benedict over a crab cake had great flavor and was very filling. Beautiful presentation. The breakfast sandwich was delicious. Shakshuka was great. I added the sausage to it. Great choice. They had the perfect balance of smoked paprika in the sauce. The fries could be shared with 4 people easily. Too rich and large to order for one or two people, but very satisfying. I didn't try the beignets, but my husband niece seemed to love them. The tart fresh cream served with them provided a nice balance. Now, the oysters were really good. Only thing missing from the menu was Char Grilled Oysters. If they added that to The menu, we would make the drive a couple times per month! We will definitely be back. Outrageously good service!! This is a must try!!

Yelp
It's really astonishing how crucial music choice is to a restaurant and yet, so many leave it to chance or perhaps a manager potentially going through a breakup to determine what is playing in the dining room... My last trip to Brine was utterly marred by the poor choice in music on a dreary winter Wednesday night a few weeks ago. I had had a day and was very hungry and thirsty and wanted to treat myself so I headed to Brine. I was ready to throw down and have several cocktails and dishes and just enjoy the evening. The staff and ambiance were welcoming at first... but then I noticed the music just as was having the first sip off my drink. The saddest Jewel song ever. I even mentioned it to the bartender, like, me a single lady, out wanting to eat, drink, and be merry, doesn't want to listen to Jewel whimper about how her ex hates it when she leaves the light on. Does a couple on a date want to hear that either? A birthday party? Unlikely, though those people are maybe able to tune it out. I sometimes wish I had that superpower. The next song, even worse, but maybe went well with my underwhelming burger and fries... or perhaps the music made my Parisian Gnocchi and Crab Sauce not taste as good as I remember the last time I came here? I already know that I need to box my food because there is no way I can stay for whatever song is going to come after Corrine Bailey Rae's "Like A Star" (which, is a good song, just it's not keeping me at the bar ordering more drinks). I box my stuff, down my drink, and don't foresee ever coming here again because the trust is gone.

Yelp
First of I would like to say compliments to the chef!! This place came recommended by the fellow yelper and it did not disappoint. We made a reservation for Saturday evening, place was not packed we were seated in the downstairs area by the bar clean neat decor with NOLA vibes. Our server was great she recommended the oysters based on your preference and suggested the beef tartar as an appetizer. For main dish we opted for shrimp risotto and chefs special that evening was sea-bass with crusted vegetables. Outstanding fish was buttery and flaky and risotto had ton of flavor. Dessert was an interesting combination of sponge cake soaked up with caramelized pears just wow!! They also have a live jazz music upstairs. Great experience absolutely worse a drive. Will be back to try more dishes

Yelp
We happened upon Brine right when they were opening on a Saturday evening, not anticipating we might need a reservation. The staff was super friendly and made room for us, even though they were completely booked. I immediately fell in love with the elegant open interior and fun menu. The space is gorgeous / (Instagram-worthy for folks who care about that) and drinks were impressive. Our four (!) cocktails were perfectly balanced with a unique combination of flavors. I loved some of the different cultural influences on the food menu as well. We had the spring rolls and samosas, smoked fish, salad, and bisque and everything was delicious and filling. Watch out Detroit, Brine is putting GP on the Best Of Restaurant map.

Yelp
Super great addition in the area! Stopped in for a drink and we were pleasantly surprised with this place. The inside was aesthetically pleasing and we loved how they had a live band on the second floor outside. Everyone working was extremely friendly. The drinks are very good too! I loved the blueberry one (can't remember the name). Definitely a little pricey but that was expected coming here. The oysters were delicious and served with a great vinegar spread. We were impressed when the chef came by with a "sea-cuterie" (like charcuterie) board and it's a special menu that you can get immediately! Definitely will be back to try the crab gnocchi and their brunch menu!

Yelp
Finally made it to Brine Oyster House! Even though it was a snowy Friday, we didn't let that stop us from enjoying a night out! I've been wanting to try this spot for a long time. We made our way to the upstairs bar where we were greeted by an awesome bartender! The vibe of this place is the French Quarter and the simple bistro decor is appropriate for an Oyster Bar. We started off with a platter of oysters, because that's what you do here!!!!! lol. We ended up ordering two of each type available. My most favorite was the Black Magic. Even though they were on the smaller side, their origin was off the cool water coast of Prince Edward Island P.E.I, I've always wanted to visit this very special place. These oysters were sweet & salty, perfectly balanced in flavor. We also decided to split the Friday Night Fish & Chips special and it was absolutely delicious! The cod filets were perfectly fried in the lightest batter! We were so impressed by the presentation. We will most certainly be back during the summer to enjoy an evening on the outside patio that wraps around the upper balcony! What a special addition to the GP restaurant scene!

Yelp
Brine has been on our list of places to try, so we picked a day and decided to go. The outside reminds me of an old New Orleans restaurant. I loved that! We had reservations, which I highly recommend because it was definitely busy. We were escorted upstairs and our server helped us with our decisions. Our cocktails and drinks were perfect. We chose several things to share and everything was amazing. We were both surprised that the muscles were a bit disappointing. I think once you've had then from Cadieux Cafe or Vivios, your expectations are set quite high. The oysters were perfect and the fries were delicious. This is a great spot to impress your date!

Yelp
I really liked this place. It definitely had New Orlean vibes from building exterior to interior with live jazz band. The food was delicious. Variety of Oysters is super fresh. Duck salad was very vibrant in presentation and had a good taste. Seafood bisque was lacking a bit of flavor, in my opinion, but people that were with me liked it. Prosecco bottle we ordered had a label from local artist, which was a nice touch. The band was great, I wish they would play a bit longer. Ended around 9:30pm. The only downside was a clueless hostess, and the person who makes reservations could have been more accommodating.

Yelp
Got some reservations for me and the girls to check this place out. I didn't realize it was only a brunch menu and that was ok. Open, airy, clean lines, and friendly service. They had bloodys and mimosas of different styles. Oysters of course all being shucked up front. Besides the oysters I personally was a huge fan of the breakfast fries. Delicious ! The omelet was also very tasty- had some roe on top. Definitely get reservations. Definitely go.

Yelp
Everything at Brine was amazing! full of flavor and fun to try different items and share. Id suggest getting 4-6 different dishes for 2-3 people. service is great and I love this addition to grosse pointe. My favorite was the yellowfin tuna salad and the gnocchi.

Yelp
Brine is the newest restaurant addition to the quaint Grosse Point Village. This two story restaurant is an upscale oyster bar that has east coast vibes. When you walk in the door you are immediately presented with a classy oyster bar where there is a server shucking oysters live. Additionally, The upstairs dining room has weekly live music that provides a great vibe throughout the entire restaurant. If you do end up sitting upstairs, the music is quite loud which can make it challenging to have a conversation. We opted to sit at the bar downstairs and the bartender was exceptionally attentive and knowledgeable about the wine offerings. She allowed us to sample several wines to ensure we were happy with our selection. For dinner, we shared several plates to sample all of the different flavours. We started the meal with some cold offerings including the curried carrots, roasted beets and king crab with burrata. The curried carrots were surprisingly delicious. The dish is a cold salad of roasted carrots that are tossed in a creamy curry dressing. The curry was not too overpowering and perfectly balanced. The beets were also quite delicious as the earthy veggies sit atop a yogurt sauce and sprinkled with toasted pistachios. The crab and burrata was a strange but beautiful combo of flavours and textures. The velvety cheese with perfectly cooked crab was accompanied by a sweet and tangy 24hr roasted tomato confit. Normally dairy and seafood isn't a popular pairing but Brine definitely got the flavours right with this dish. For our warm dishes we ordered the salmon special and the roasted mushrooms. Every Saturday is "salmon Saturday" where they have a new rotating feature. The salmon dish had a Mexican flair as the fish was roasted in a banana leaf with a poblano pepper and accompanied with beans and rice. Finally The mushroom dish was a total umami bomb. It was a combination of several different types of wild mushrooms cooked in a sweet, salty and savoury sauce. This side dish was surprisingly scrumptious. A unique feature of this restaurant is that they have different themes/specials for certain week nights. Overall I had a wonderful experience at Brine and look forward to returning to sample more of their offerings.

Yelp
This place is a gem. Seriously. It's just made it to the top of my list. Great atmosphere. Excellent, friendly and welcoming service. Amazing food. Outstanding cocktails. Well done, Brine. Well done. (Had root veggies, duck fat "fries" and shrimp risotto. All spectacular.

Yelp
I'm torn about giving them 5 because there were a few things I didn't like, but the food, ambiance and band were excellent, so I'll give them the 5 and hope they read this and fix the problems. I'll definitely go back though. We shared all of the food between 2 people: Mussels in green curry sauce - Amazing! Plus they gave us two crusty pieces of bread and fries that we proceeded to dip in the sauce. We ordered 2 oysters each to try - we enjoyed both - and they came with an interesting vinegar dip. The gnocchi with crab was the best gnocchi I've ever had. They were puffy with a slight crunch on the outside. The inside was tender and melted in your mouth. The crab and sauce were so good we sopped the rest up with our bread. The paella fritters were good but not great. They weren't as yummy as the other items, but not bad. The band was excellent-of course that's subjective, but I really enjoyed listening to them while eating. They also were aware of not being overly loud so that everyone could enjoy them but still converse. We had a great view of them from the upstairs bar. What didn't I like? We had reservations and they walked us upstairs and took us to a round 2 top table. It was comically small. I sat down, then decided, no way, we can't eat here. 1 plate and a drink each and there would be no room. So I asked if we could move to a 4 person table that was empty. Hostess came back and said, 'no', it was reserved. We were there for 1.5 hours, no one ever sat there. So we moved to the bar, which would have been great except the bar stools have no backs. By the end of the night my back was ACHING. New stools with backs would be a HUGE upgrade. With all the food we ordered we commented to each other that there was no way our plates would have fit on the little table. Later 2 ladies were seated there just for drinks - which is all they are good for. And finally - service was initially a bit slow. The bartender took a bit to ask us what we wanted and when we finally ordered, we sat for an additional 7 or so minutes waiting for our drink. Once our food started coming out though, everything moved along. They pipe the music to the downstairs diners, so if you're not interested in seeing the band, you can still hear them.

Yelp
Good oysters. Smallish place. Decent selection of food beyond just the oysters. Actually had a beef and oyster pot pie to keep the theme going. The crust was a little thick and not as flaky as I would've liked. In the stew below, it was hard to differentiate the oysters from the beef. The textures and flavors were a bit muddled together.

Yelp
The service was great. The food was delicious. We had brunch on a Saturday early afternoon. I'm hoping to come back for supper soon.

Yelp
Tried Brine Oyster House on the recommendation from a couple locals while having family in town for the holidays. Lauren provided a family of four plus our two guests an amazing dining experience with her patience and recommendations. On this night, there was live music which added even more to the overall experience. We have two children under 11 who enjoy trying different foods and flavors, both dug into the oyster options and mussels. Our guests labeled this experience as a top 3 for them. Thanks to the staff, chefs, and all who contributed to an amazing evening for the family.

Yelp
Great ambiance, but that's about it. There was nothing (other than the architecture) reminiscent of New Orleans. The menu was not reflective of Louisiana at all. No gumbo, no poboys, no étouffée, no catfish, no redfish, no crawfish. The oysters were all small and unremarkable. None cooked in Rockefeller or Bienville style. The server was unenthusiastic and uninformed about the menu and specials. Portions are super small and expensive. We had very high hopes for this place. (I lived in New Orleans for 6 years.). This place was disappointing.
google avatar

Leah G.

Yelp
Great. Perfect. Phenomenal. Came with a reservation on their opening day and was able to be seated immediately. The oysters were all perfect and shucked expertly with no shell pieces at all! Cocktails we're lovely and all of the food that was ordered came out quickly and hot. The entire restaurant was beautiful and the owner(?) was so friendly and happy to have us!

John M.

Yelp
For the cost, the value simply isn't there. The space is very nice but the dining experience and the food wasn't on the level expected for the seafood that was on the menu. Drinks were good but it's not a place I would go to for drinks exclusively which leaves it stunk in the middle for me. It may be an option for a very, very occasional meal in a place I won't frequent but I wouldn't consider this a top choice for going regularly. Grosse Pointe Park has added a number of new options over the last 4-5 years and it's disappointing that none seen to really, really stand out for what they do.

Yelp
Came here to celebrate a birthday. Oysters were very good and that's about where the good ends. Our server didn't know much about the types of alcohol they had and was constantly looking things up. Simple question like what is your well whiskey, or having a different kind. Had to flag her down quite a few times to order apps then main entree's. Food was just ok. Lobster spring roll was really good, and the mini taro tako taco was delicious. But like the menu says, mini. That thing was 1-2 bites. The mini breathing rock slider was very good also and a bit bigger than the taco. The Paella Fritters were absolutely disgusting and tasted like old seafood. We sent it back because there was no way they were fresh. Fried Seafood Rissole was delicious also to finish up our appetizer tasting. Entrees were good but nothing memorable, except the scallops were perfectly cooked. In the end the price doesn't justify the service and food imho. We would go back for oysters and espresso martini's. Other than that it's an ok place.

Deb S.

Yelp
On Tuesdays there is a prix fixe menu that is adventurous, varied and delicious. Tonight we had a 5 course meal, everything was fresh, beautifully plated and delicious. We did not leave hungry! Attentive and kind wait staff. We'll be back again.

Yelp
I saw this place on my favorite app.... TicTok! Sent it to Hubby and off we went. When you walk in people are behind a counter shucking fresh oysters. We were a little early for our reservation, so the hostess sat us upstairs in a small lounge area so that we can order drinks. I had a Peach in the Quarter and hubby had a bourbon street. Both were good but hubby's was a little on the weaker side. The hostess came back up to show us to our table. It's fairly small in there so the tables are close together. We started with some oysters, they had 6 different kinds. All from the New England states. Very fresh!!!!!! Very amazing!!!! A young lady then comes with a "Sea"chuterie board with different kinds of fish and cooked shrimp. She put together those dishes table side! For entrees.... and this is why I didn't give 5 stars.... Hubby had the Steak Frites and I had the mini fried oyster slider sandwich, a octopus taco and a piece of fried shrimp with shoestring fries. The steak wasn't anything special. Seasoned with salt and pepper. The Mini Trio was good. But for $20 I expected more. One lonely piece of shrimp should be an appetizer, not part of a meal. We also had the duck fat fries. Now these were really good! Hot, fresh and well seasoned. I would definitely go again!!!!!

Katie N.

Yelp
Service: Top notch from the front door to the dessert. And EVERYTHING in between. (Server was just perfect! ) Food: every bite was amazing- we had four each of every oyster on the menu, appetizers, salads (fresh green and beet with quark), mushrooms were indeed interesting, steak, gnocchi, burrata and king crab. Ambiance: beautiful Food was so good we forgot to take a picture!

Laura B.

Yelp
We went to brine for first time. It was not a pleasant experience. We were seated at first table by the door. When we asked the man who seated us to move, he said no. When there were 3 open tables further back. We also thought we'd get a table near the music. The music is upstairs and we were on first floor. We ordered an entree, it was good but small potions. Not sure if we will go back.
google avatar

Leah B.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I have been here twice now and it is incredible. The food is fantastic, the oysters are delicious and the staff is very attentive. This will definitely be a neighborhood favorite. I do recommend making a reservation.
google avatar

Yelp
Bar Staff was exceedingly rude unfriendly and unwelcoming. The darker haired gentleman borderline offensive. Host staff was not clear sent us to the bar for a drink and to wait for an opening The bar would not serve us because we were only at one stool and we're waiting for an opening. . 5 tables open and not seated. Host personality of a clam. Everyone looking at us and zero helping us. First time in. Won't be back. Unfortunate. We eat out every night and live in Grosse pointe. Love oysters. Staff and service is half the game.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a beautiful building and really delicious oysters! Great service as well! We're coming back again this week!

Debbie C.

Yelp
Have dined her twice. Both times the atomosphere has been wonderful with great service. Truly a gorgeous restaurant! Love the entire space & bartenders are so friendly although they need some good classic New Orleans cocktails on the menu. The food is very mediocre. Have dined with two other couples on two different nights so we have tried a lot of items on the menu. Most of the food is very underseasoned or tastes downright awful. The menu & food needs a complete overhaul. Seafood tower is an absolute must for a seafood/French/New Orleans style restaurant. More fresh fish options. The posh Josh fish sticks should be removed from the menu. Streetside restaurant in Birmingham is a favorite of Grosse Pointers for a reason: Fresh seafood, not going crazy fancy, but just offering delicious properly seasoned fish & seafood. Owner should take a trip to New Orleans to get some inspiration, because the fresh fish and seafood dishes there are amazing and it's not too difficult to do. I have no idea what they were thinking with this menu and overall taste of the food (Other than the yummy oysters)! I keep reading reviews very similar to mine. I hope ownership reads this, and takes note if they want Brine to be successful.

Daniel L.

Yelp
Food was a little above average. Service was very good. Ambiance was very nice on the patio upstairs.

Cathleen S.

Yelp
Great venue mediocre food...what a shame was looking forward to this new place in the neighborhood.

Lynda G.

Yelp
Ambiance was wonderful. Found the menu very limited. Entrees we're small. drinks were short, incorrect and had to be returned, didn't have pinot grio. Didn't have cocktail sauce. Waitress was not very attentive. The wandering sea food chaucuteri offering came after we had ordered and was bland. Unless menu changes, we will not return. Hope they increase menu for men friendly menu items. I'd love to see this beautiful restaurant survive.
