The Best Places to Eat and Drink in the Upper Haight | Eater SF

"This cutesy brunch spot took over the Sparrow Bar and Kitchen space. It does that business’s legacy justice with big plates of French toast riddled with vanilla custard and raspberries. Crucially, prices here are competitive in San Francisco. Dinner is a thing here, too, with a super meaty lasagna for about $16." - Paolo Bicchieri

Pretty decent food! I've had their French toast, marinara pasta (would not recommend, sauce is a little too watery for my liking and lacks flavor), grilled vegetable and grilled caprese sandwich. Friends had chicken sandwich and Alfredo pasta - they were good. Would definitely recommend and visit again!

Google
Had an amazing time ! The outdoor seating was just perfect, offering a lovely ambiance to enjoy a relaxing meal. The food was top-notch—my steak was cooked to perfection, paired with a refreshing salad and crispy fries. The mint tea was a nice touch to wrap up the meal. My partner had a turkey sandwich and salad, which he also loved. The prices were surprisingly great for the quality of the food, making it an even better experience. The only downside was the service, which was a bit slow—honestly, we had enough time to write this review while waiting! But, I guess that’s a good sign for their business if people are sticking around. Regardless, we’re already planning to return for brunch (especially since breakfast is served all day). Can’t wait to come back! Highly recommend it!

Google
Great food had the eggs Benedict and the French onion soup! Cozy back patio area with heaters available for colder seasons. Service was reasonable and quick! Food was also prepared at a quick time. Great spot to get a nice bite or even take yourself on a lunch date.

Google
My go to brunch spot in the city. Plenty of seatings and love the outside patio!! Food is amazing as always.

Google
Best brunch atmosphere is here in the city. I loved their patio and also food was amazing. Thanks

Google
This is a nice cafe on Haight Street. The atmosphere is nice and bright along with a back patio for seating. There’s also a bar that serves draught beer and breakfast and lunch menu. The coffee was good and is definitely a clean place to relax. I got the quiche and it was a decent portion, however there was a lot of cheese in it. I saw others orders and they all looked presentable and large portions for the cost. Staff is great. Atmosphere is nice. The food I got was okay, but at least you got your values worth. If I were ever to go back I’d enjoy the coffee and perhaps some baked goods.

Google
Clean and orderly in an area of the City where we walked by many places that were not. Ok I’m a tourist and we really appreciated the sanctuary of the backyard eating area on a warm spring afternoon. Server was a young man from Guatemala named Darlin. He was delightful. I’d have given 5-stars but my sister mentioned the eggplant in her otherwise wonderful Moroccan Chicken was a bit tough that day. Oh and my Perrier bottle was dinky. I gobbled up half my burger before talking a photo, just couldn’t wait. Onion soup was very good too. Our friend said her salad was good but I can’t remember which one she ordered (first photo)

Google
What a cute little cafe! The smooth, lounge music really sets the mood and the food was excellent! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the grilled turkey sandwich - it comes on a french roll that was soft on the inside with a slight crisp on the outside, the cubed turkey was super moist and flavorful, and it came with an awesome chipotle aioli that tied everything together. The accompanying salad was fresh, light, and not over-dressed. My partner's fine herbs omelet with apple cider sausage came with potatoes and fresh fruit. What a treat! Our waitress was extremely nice and attentive despite it being a surprisingly busy Monday morning. Definitely check it out if you are in the neighborhood!

Yelp
just mid, got a burger and i feel like i could've made it at home. more about convenience of location and the vibes i guess. service was great tho.

Yelp
Good value! Super reasonable prices and loved the quaint outdoor seating area. I ordered the brisket sandwich (seemed to be one of the less popular items, but thought I'd contribute a data point to Yelp :)). Healthy serving of brisket and definitely hit the spot of a more heavy brunch. Brisket was perfectly seasoned & tender, and the baguette was crunchy (though, some bites felt like more bread than meat). The aioli sauce also helped change up the flavor profile of some bites of the sandwich, and I liked dipping the fries in there as well. I definitely wish there were some more greens in the sandwich, since it was a bit lackluster Would be interested to try the brisket burger next time, which seems like the more popular item

Yelp
The food here is delicious! I got the grilled chicken sandwich and it was flavorful and the bread was so soft. While the food was very good, the service was subpar and kind of strange? When we walked in, my friend and I were asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside. We said inside. I was expecting them to take us to a table but instead we were awkwardly handed the menus, left to choose our own seat. No problem about this but it felt weird! After we ordered, our waiter came back to us 5 min afterwards to double check our order, only for them to get it wrong. Also, the food took an insane amount of time to come out despite there being few people there. Waiters were literally standing around, not busy. If you're in a hurry, this is not the place for you. I think if you're there to meet and catch up with a friend, you can use the long wait for your food as a chance to chat it up! But if you're hungry and want a quick and smooth experience, this is not the place.

Yelp
Been here a couple of times, great little spot for brunch food, sandwiches and salads. Their patio out the back is charming and relaxing. Definitely a nice break in the sunshine. Brunch is served here all day. If you dig breakfast burritos, this is the spot to be at. I ordered their grilled chicken sandwich which came with avocado served on crusty bread. You can get a side of either mixed greens or chips. I found the chicken to be a bit on the drier side than I would have liked, but the amount was plentiful. The service was friendly, water carafe and two glasses were brought out. Would come back to try brunch items next time!

Yelp
My friend only ordered bacon and eggs, which both came out burnt. I had the eggs benedict. Half way through eating it, I found an entire egg shell in it. I went to the front to get a refund for the benedict and while I was gone, someone walked up to my friends and asked them to leave a 5 star review. When my friend told her we were literally getting a refund for being unhappy with the food, she said "oh that's just the kitchen, you can still leave me a good review"....

Yelp
Food is good, but kind of steep for what you get. I ordered the tacos. They were just alright. Kind of disappointed :( $24 for 3 tacos with just veggies and no meat. Maybe get their other items instead.

Yelp
Great price for a great variety of brunch and lunch foods! Came at noon on a Saturday and got seated right away. There's seating inside and in the back patio. We ordered the quiche and the brioche French toast to share. The quiche with ham was so delicious, the puff pastry crust made it crunchy and flakey and the egg was cooked so well!! It was very filling so I'm glad my friend and I ordered to share. The brioche french toast was not as fluffy as I expected it to be, a lot denser than what I anticipated and kind of small as well. I ordered the spinach and Gruyère omelette for myself and it was packed with spinach and Gruyère which made it super good value. The potatoes that came with it were denser than other brunch place potatoes I had, but still good when dipped with ketchup. I like that the dish comes with fruit making it a well balanced meal.

Yelp
Bacon was good and warm chips was salt and vinegar. Very good and the time it took to get severed was great I was the second person there.very clean organized. Service was great warm greeting and through out ‍

Yelp
If you're gonna offer brunch in SF, you have to do it right! Unfortunately, Brioche was a miss for me. Please hire more people...or seat fewer! While this is a deceptively huge spot, Brioche was WAY understaffed at its busiest time. This led to our order not being put in with the kitchen, and us waiting over an hour for our food. The Eggs Benedict Florentine was pretty good, and the prices are reasonable, but the disorganized service left much to be desired.

Yelp
Came here while staying with my cousin and off the bat the vibes were really cute! The space is not too big so we had to wait a while for people to leave before we were seated. Our server was nice however he kept forgetting to bring things to the table like water and at one point my entire meal :( I really enjoyed the California Omelette and French onion soup! I also ordered a strawberry lemonade but it was very thick for some reason I'm assuming it was due to the syrup they used. Overall it was a nice place however the service was not that great. Maybe I'll stop by again in the future.

Yelp
I love this place for brunch. Great vibes and the chai latte was exquisite (and i'm picky) the outdoor patio in the back feels like you're not even in the city, its a little oasis. Staff if very nice. Sometimes hard to get their attention but they check you out fast which is nice!

Yelp
Did we do something wrong? My partner and I came here for brunch on Saturday, September 7th. We walked in and were handed orders but were not told where to sit. I asked, "Do we go to the patio?" because the group in front of us had been told to do so. The woman rudely just said "yeah." We sat at a table in the back of the patio next to where it's closed off. We were given waters and then just... ignored. For almost 30 minutes we sat there ready to order and the waiter ignored us. Finally, we managed to flag someone down to order. After we got our food, nobody checked on us to see if it was good or if we needed anything else. We actually needed another plate because we were sharing. Obviously, we didn't get one. We got the steak frites. The steak was tough. We won't be back.

Yelp
My friend and I found this cafe on Yelp, so we decided to try it and I'm glad we did! Everything about it was wonderful! They have a really cute patio in the back with heaters available, but it was a bit cold for us, so we opted to sit indoors. The whole dining room was bright and cheerful. As we entered, we were handed two menus and told we could sit anywhere. We asked about the patio and he said we could check it out and decide if we wanted to sit there or inside, so, after checking it out, we decided on indoor dining. I had the eggs benedict and my friend had the California omelette with apple sausage. She said she really enjoyed her omelette and I definitely loved my eggs benedict! The roasted potatoes that accompanied each of our dishes were absolutely amazing, too; just the right crispiness to them with a nice soft inside. Also loved having the fresh fruit cup... definitely put everything over the top. The staff was friendly and, with a nudge, they refilled my coffee cup a couple of times. My friend and I visited with each other for a good hour and a half and never felt rushed. Great place and delicious food; what more could I ask for? Will definitely return!

Yelp
Took a while, but very nice area & vibes. Food is pretty good as well. I got the breakfast burrito & it heavily needed hot sauce, which I had to steal from another table because there was no one really checking in on us. The service was subpar, and I'm sure they were slammed, but everything did kind of take a while, and we couldn't even catch the attention to our servers because I couldn't even see them.

Yelp
Came for brunch with friends on a weekday. It wasn't busy and got seated right away. Service was friendly and brought waters right away which I really appreciated. It's cute inside and a lovely patio area outside as well. I tried the breakfast croissant. It was filling enough with eggs, sausage, and tomato. Nothing totally outstanding but pretty good. I enjoyed the salad for something lighter on the side. Wish the croissant was a bit flakier.
google avatar

Amee T.

Yelp
There was no host to seat us, so we pretty much waited at the front for 10 minutes watching waiters walk past us and the bartender side eye us. We had to walk up to a waiter who told us to take a seat, but other than that, the food was 10/10. French Toast was classic! Chicken apple sausage was cooked well. Honey Granola Parfait tasted fresh and very healthy. We sat outside on one of SF's very fleeting beautiful days before the wind came in!
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
This place has an attention deficit problem. Gave me the wrong beer, the wrong side, the wrong sandwich (twice!) Finally had to settle for whatever they decided to bring me, whether I liked it or not!
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
This was the SPOT. Had a great brunch here- the service was fabulous and the food was fresh and absolutely delicious!! My only wish is to have had bottomless mimosas! Also my brisket sandwich was good but I expected bbq brisket, not stewed/braised and wish the sandwich was filled with more meat...my family ordered breakfast and it was all amazing and the tomato soup was 10/10. Would love to come back!

Yelp
Cute little cafe on haight! Lots of brunch options and great spot for weekend brunch followed by shopping nearby. Ordered a caprese sandwich which came with a side salad ~$16 total. Crunchy, toasted bread paired with tomatoes, pesto and cheese made for a perfect sandwich. Salad was basic but I opted for that to be healthy lol Would visit again bc the location is great and there's options for everyone! Plus the backyard seating area is so adorable.
google avatar

Sara S.

Yelp
Nice little patio in the back Patient waitress Food not bad and most importantly they are not fussy about adding items to menu items Had a tomato/cheese sandwich and added egg Great espresso drink But this place had a french name and is listed as French food. There is NOTHING french about this place lol
google avatar

Keila P.

Yelp
I came in with a party of two and was seated right away. We got a breakfast burrito and the brioche French toast. The food was good, but they appeared to be a bit short staffed. As more people came in they got busy, and they were juggling many tables. My feedback was that the restaurant smelled like cigarette smoke inside. Thank you !
google avatar

Yelp
Brioche was very quintessential brunch - good quality and good taste but with small portions for a lot of money. If you like brunch, you'll like this. But if you aren't the biggest brunch believer, like me, this won't be the exception.

Yelp
Cool fun spot to go with friends. I like the outdoor area in the back since it was spacious. The burrito was excellent but the service was a little slow. Will come back again to try the other items.

Maryanne D.

Yelp
Stumbled on this cute little spot on Haight Street and was pleasantly surprised. We had the smoked salmon toast and the tuna melt, both of which were fresh and flavorful. The side salad was a nice touch, and the latte hit the spot--smooth and well made. Prices were decent for the quality, and the service was friendly and efficient. We sat out on the patio, and it honestly didn't even feel like we were on Haight Street--super peaceful and relaxing. Definitely a great find for a casual meal or coffee break.

Sara S.

Yelp
The food was excellent, the service was very good and we loved the cute outdoor area. We would definitely come back.

Yelp
Came here around 11am on a Saturday morning and it was quite busy. Waited shortly for a table and it seemed to start clearing out once we sat down. It felt cozy and warm in here on this stormy day. Service was slow as there was only one server on the floor, but it was fine. Luckily I didn't want a refill of water or coffee. Food was unfortunately nothing special, but I did appreciate the touch of bacon bits atop the eggs benedict. It's a nice, affordable spot for breakfast if you live in the neighborhood, but it's not a destination spot.

Karla G.

Yelp
The chai was good but all the waiters have a bad attitude and are very unwelcoming for no reason.
google avatar

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were seated in the back porch outdoor area for our brunch. After a morning of walking through Golden Gate Park and up Haight St., it was just what we were looking for. We ordered mimosas, the quiche and the breakfast burrito. Each came with a side of toast. By the end were were both full and happy with out selections. The back yard dining area was cute and quaint, and service was very friendly. We did not feel we were waiting too long for our food. This is a great dining spot tucked away on Haight that is worth the visit! It was a wonderful pit stop for a sunny day exploring the city on foot.

Grace -.

Yelp
The food was excellent and very affordable! I got the grilled chicken salad and my friend got the beet salad. For my dish, I was pleased with the amount of chicken I got as well as the amount of noodles (good amount of chicken and only some noodles which is what I want for salad. Not too carb heavy.) The place is really cute and the service is good. I definitely recommend!
google avatar

Alexa T.

Yelp
I stopped in after doing some shopping on Haight Street. The cafe is super cute, there's a backyard patio with a decent amount of tables and with some heat lamps. I got the grilled chicken sandwich was super good. It came on a ciabbata bread and had a good amount of chicken and avocado.

Yelp
My favorite place in the Haight Ashbury area. Their prosciutto tartine is so flavorful thanks to the mix of fruit and salty prosciutto and has become my go to item. The people there are very kind. They also have a cozy outdoor area in the back thats kept warm by large space heaters. I bring friends here every time I'm asked to be a guide in SF. No complaints each time.
google avatar

Justice K.

Yelp
This review is specifically for the breakfast burrito. Honestly, they should be ashamed. The value is terrible. The burrito is very small, maybe 6.5"-7" at most. Paying $17 before any tip for this felt like robbery. The taste is slightly below average. The green tortilla was very chewy. I can guarantee you that Brioche Bakery will never receive another dime from me after this heist. Il Canto in the financial district will remain my go to for breakfast burritos.
google avatar

Allen W.

Yelp
The menu is quite short, but it's a nice little nook in a bustling area. It's not small, but the restaurant front leads to a really pretty enclosed garden area in the back (ps. choose to be seated outside!). There's flowers and it's very cafe floral aesthetic! Food is pretty good. I was so hungry I inhaled half of the burrito before realizing it could have more salt/pepper, which you do get at the table. Sriracha would be nice to have to on the side too. In this area of SF, there is hardly any parking available. But there are lots of thrift stores nearby !!

Yelp
The Food was very yummy , fresh and the service is quick. Friendly staff and love the way how the cafe is cozy comfortable and very beautiful
google avatar

Yelp
Solid cafe in Haight Good eggs Benedict Fast service Plenty of space If there was a power outlet to charge my phone, I woulda stayed even longer and bought more food
google avatar

Leo O.

Yelp
The food was ok, I just had an average chicken sandwich. It was on the dry side. I enjoyed more the side salad that came with it. The service was very slow, not sure if they were low on staff. I was about to leave when the server showed up. I was going to grab a drink but decided don't because I was worried it was going to take awhile. The food took awhile and I had to wave the server to get the check. The patio was nice. Inside looks like it was a cramped space.
google avatar

Angel S.

Yelp
My bf ordered the brisket sandwhich and said that overall he was satisfied. His only complaint was that he wished it had just a little more meat to balance out the bread. There was a bunch of leafy greens beneath the meat, so it appeared that there was more meat than there really was. That being said, it was still good, and the meat had a nice flavor and texture. The sauce they made for dipping your fries was also pleasant. I had the eggs Benedict. The eggs Benedict had a slice of Canadian bacon under the poached eggs, which tasted wonderful together. The bacon bits on top kind of threw off the taste for me, but im also not super into bacon bits. I normally dont like the side of potatoes at most places, unless it's mashed potatoes. However, the potatoes here were crunchy and delicious. Would definitely get them again. The fruit was fresh, juicey, and just right. Sometimes, places give hard honeydew and cantaloupe, but that was not the case here.

Yelp
Food was good - decent portions overpriced for a burrito $14 service was slow but definitely liked the vibe there
google avatar

Sravya B.

Yelp
The chicken sandwich I ordered was delicious, and they accidentally gave us an extra mimosa we didn't order and forgot sauce with one of two identical orders. So not particularly impressed by the service-- a bit of rework and all over the place. Outdoor area is cute, perfect for a morning brunch.
google avatar

Paul R.

Yelp
I like Brioche - the waitstaff is nice. I had a tuna salad sandwich - I had asked for chips, but they brought salad. I mentioned it and the guy who brought the food out said he would go the chips, then I never saw him again. The cheese was melted under a light but by the time I got the sandwich it was pretty cold. Not complaining, just saying what happened. They had an egg on the sandwhich and a piece of lettuce, which I liked. I like the cafe over all.
google avatar

Yelp
Happy to found an early breakfast weekend spot! Came on a Saturday morning at 8:30 and there was no wait, with plenty of parking. Ordered the brioche french toast (right amount of tasty and crisp), chai latte (slightly too sweet), iced mocha latte, and prosciutto sandwich with potatoes. Everything came out quickly and tasted great. Best part was you could have a conversation without being overpowered by music or surrounding tables (hard to have in most SF brunch places these days). Looking forward to coming back and trying other breakfast items.

Yelp
Food was delish. My husband got lunch and I got breakfast, both were pleased with our selections Service was very friendly

Yelp
Brief Summary: - There are seats outside and inside the cafe. Most of the seats are in the back garden area - Light portions - Attentive staff A couple weeks ago, I went to a cafe named Brioche Bakery and Cafe. While looking for places to eat in Haight street, I discovered the cafe in the same area. In the yelp photos I saw a wall painting that was identical to the other one near the Italian district. Curious -- and hungry -- we decided to eat here for brunch. The building is long and narrow, so the center is the kitchen and the areas on either side are seats. The weather was clear and bright, so we requested to sit in the back yard. The backyard looks as pretty as seen in the photos, and the trees provided great shade while we were seated. We browsed through the menu and noticed that the dishes were slightly different from the other cafe. One, the grilled cheese sandwich was not in the list. We were thinking of something new anyways, so we got different dishes: french toast, omelette, and a tuna sandwich. The staff swiftly took our orders and went about helping others. I have also ordered an iced Thai latte because while the weather was nice, it was one of the rare warm days in San Francisco. All of the dishes arrived at the same time. The French toast was a comfortable amount of portions. Four triangle shaped toasts with berries on top. A strawberry syrup was drizzled over and I believe this stood out sweeter than the other aspects of the French toast. It still needed some sweetness so I poured most of the glazed syrup over it. Generally, the dishes were lighter than the other branch. We weren't too full after we ate, so we were able to take a stroll around Haight street and then have coffee and dinner in the evening.

Yelp
Fair fare Food was basic and good Good quantity - fresh. No decaf Service was fair Atmosphere was several vibes away from clearly being ... Pleasant experience

Yelp
Food was good! Space was spacious, outdoor area and clean. Service was quick. Wish I would have checked the bathroom but I'm sure it was nice.

Yelp
Delicious! Simple food, not over seasoned or over the top. We had the steak and frites. $18. Good size steak, balanced amount of fries and a nice size side salad. We also had the French onion soup. Yum! Simple, not complex, good size, 3 big pieces of bread $8 Atmosphere was nice, waited on quickly with great service. Would come back or recommend for something chill and yummy!

Yelp
I just grabbed a cinnamon roll to go. Maybe because it's a holiday, but it was stale, dry and way too sweet. One bite and it wound up in the trash.
google avatar

Sandhya G.

Yelp
I had brunch at this place on a saturday morning and it was pretty decent. The grilled veggie panini that I had was well made with an excellent flavor from the pesto. I felt that the coffee (cappuccino) that I had could have been a bit better though. The service was also great as they attended us in a timely fashion! Also loved the outdoor seating area in the backyard :)

Yelp
I visited here on a Sunday afternoon and loved that I was able to sit outside on the patio and enjoy some fresh air. It took a while to be approached because they only had one server working in the back, and even longer after eating to get the bill (I ended up going up front to pay). I enjoyed my parfait, but for being called a "honey granola parfait" it was mostly fruit and hardly any yogurt or granola which I found a bit odd. Overall a nice place but maybe would've ordered something else and not expected fast service.
