The Best Dominican Food In NYC

"Here’s something you should try: Dominican food on the beach. Brisas Del Mar has a few locations around the city, but two of them happen to be in the Rockaways, both about a block from the sand. At this counter-service restaurant you can get a plate or to-go container and dictate however much yellow rice, chicken, pork, plantains, and empaguetadas (spaghetti on the beach, anyone?) you’d like piled onto it. The locations are a mere five minutes’ drive from each other, but so popular that they’re typically both full of regulars." - willa moore, bryan kim, molly fitzpatrick, will hartman, sonal shah

What an amazing place to grab a quick bite. The food was fresh and delicious, the service was friendly and quick. The set up is buffet style prepared food and you pick and choose what you want to eat. The tables are clean and it was not crowded during lunch hour, as mostly people came in and bought food to go. Highly recommend it, if you’re looking for some delicious no frills, fresh food!

Google
This place came recommended from my AirBNB host. When I arrived, there was no menu, but an almost cafeteria style layout. The friendly lady behind the counter explained my options. I got host over yellow rice and pinto beans with plantains. It was absolutely fantastic! And plenty to eat. There’s not much seating, and the atmosphere is beach crowd friendly.

Google
We were supposed to eat at another restaurant, Anny, but when we got there, they informed us that they would only accept cash. Yet there was no ATM. We started walking on 116th, looking for an ATM. Instead, we found this place to eat. It's a buffet style place with only one booth style table. The best thing was that the food was good and the price was right.

Google
First time ordering here. Food tastes good but as one reviewer has said nothing that seriously wowed me. Price is affordable and good portions. Will recommend. 👍

Google
My mom is in a wheelchair and the staff here are kind, accommodating, attentive to her needs. The food, needless to say, is absolutely delicious.

Google

Google
Great staff, food and price. Expect a short line because this place is good. There's a ton of variety here and plenty of options for a vegan like myself. 4 kinds of rice, plenty of salads and many other sides such as meats, beans, and fried plantain. There is definitely something here for you. The perfect place for lunch after the beach

Yelp
Food is consistently delicious and they give great sized portions. Orders are always delivered quickly. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
This restaurant has amazing food & great vibes. The owners are extra nice and go the extra mile. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Best Dominican dish's in NYC. Variety selections always flavorful. I love the roasted pernil, yellow rice n gradulas and green salad. Affordable prices and huge quantity.

Yelp
I say my thanks for this restaurant every day. I eat vegan and can cobble together a dynamite dish here. I love their avocado salad, beets, Maduros, & pickled onions. The red hot sauce is homemade and phenomenal. Ask for it! They charge me a different amount for the same thing every time, but I could care less bc they're fabulous in every regard and good luck finding better Dominican food elsewhere. Tip: Keep yr eyes open for their signed displayed photo of Anthony Bourdain eating there!!

Yelp
Awesome food that's always fresh and ready to go. Very friendly owners and staff. The Pernil is always well seasoned and super tasty.

Yelp
This place is the best. Super cheap prices for quality food. Juicy rotisserie chicken, tender roast pork, flavorful yellow rice and the Fresh avocado salad is a huge YASSSS! It gets busy but the ladies fixing the plates are very nice and quick. I'm so happy our pl e is only 3 blocks away from here.

Yelp
Brisas Del Mar Corp is an awesome addition to the neighborhood. Love the ambiance of this place. OMG, their Avocado Salad was absolutely yummy, such a spectacular dish with outstanding flavors. All of the staff are really helpful - you most certainly feel welcome and looked after. Enjoy Brisas Del Mar Corp.

Yelp
I came here because my coworker lives near by. We ordered chicken with rice and beans. The food was so good and fresh. The prices were affordable and they gave so much food. The area is nice and redone after Hurricane Sandy. Please give this local business a try Rockaway. People need to come to the Rockaways and bring in more revenue. Support NYC beach communities!

Yelp
I usually like the food here but customer service sucks ‍ after ordering a small meal & ordered 4 empanadas the guy ignored me and basically brushed me off when I asked for plantains & continued taking someone else's order as I stood there. When I get to the register my card declines for whatever reason and they guy says " you no have no money " & starts laughing .. I personally don't get the joke because why would I go anywhere without money I guess he thinks black people are broke if you are of African American decent DO NOT GO TO THIS LOCATION!

Yelp
Just had lunch with my daughter at this restaurant and everything we had was deliciouso! Someone was leaving the restaurant while we were crossing the street and the smell of Spanish food crossed the street to meet us and enticed us to enter. We ordered at the counter and sat by the window to eat. My daughter ordered Fried plantains with pork ribs and a beef empanada. I ordered yellow rice and beans with extra beans and sauce on top with a piece of fried white fish and sweet bananas on side. The food was tasty and fresh! This place is a great spot for really good food that's authentic, ethnic, and delicious. The price is right too! Lunch was $15. If your looking for good Spanish food than this is the spot!
google avatar

Monquita R.

Yelp
Sometimes the food is good, sometimes it's not so good. When they have it, the cerviche is amazing! But I've gone there a few times, and they did't have it. The portion sizes are very large, but a bit off. Way too much rice and not enough chicken. The service is not so good. I (along with another couple) literally stood at the counter for about 5 minutes without being acknowledged. The only thing that stopped me from leaving was the fact that I wanted plantains really bad. And they turned out to be dry. This place is definitely hit or miss.
google avatar

Shayssa R.

Yelp
Don't ever buy fresh beverages from this location they use a artificial powdered flavored drinks to make lemonade and Spanish drinks
google avatar

Ana C.

Yelp
First time and definitely not my last . The portions here are huge and they have literally EVERY Dominican comfort food you could imagine . You just go down the line and tell the server what you want and you just sit back and watch them stack your plate up to the heavens. Muy rica y buen servicio.

Yelp
Here in Rockaway there isn't much option when it comes to authentic Dominican food. Not sure why but I'm glad we got this place. This is a family run business which expanded to another sister restaurant on B. 116th street about a year ago. The food here is amazing. I once complained about the salt being too overpowering but that has since subsided, probably just a bad day. There's so much option here and you can request something from the menu if it's not there. I personally love their fried rice which reminds me of the Chaufa rice from some Peru/ Asian restaurants. The roasted chicken and pernil are really good. Can't forget their $1 empanadas. Try the chicken one...thank me later. I also order the avocado salad which reminds me of ceviche without the seafood. So yummy. Good portions, friendly service, fresh food, what more can you ask for. Oh, and they have a lot of seating and they accept debit/credit. Buen provecho.

Ken G.

Yelp
Man I don't have much to say the staff are lovely very professional, the food is amazing the portions stacked the food is fresh , just keep up the good work

Hitomi M.

Yelp
This is not a fancy restaurant. But this is the real restaurant that offer great food in cheap price! This is the only restaurant that I always go back, always busy and always people waiting for take away. I believe that shows the restaurant offer great food. My favorite is 1$ fresh empanadas, and chicken soup.
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
Having seen this on Bourdain's Parts Unknown, we stopped by for dinner after the beach. Great food for unbeatable prices. The empanadas are out of this world. The chicken thigh was tender, juicy, and flavorful. Other favorites included the flan (so sweet and delicious) and fried plantains. YUM!!!! You will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Dylan F.

Yelp
Very good empanadas! They are very good! I definitely recommend going to Brisas Del Mar Corp!
google avatar

Susan T.

Yelp
My sister filled up a plate heaping with rice, beans, fish, plantains, and avocados. We planned to share but ended up going back for a second plate. The fish is battered in something delicious, the avocados are abundant, and the price (low) is hard to believe.

Suhana D.

Yelp
This place started off good from the first order, although prices on the online menu do not match at all with the prices given by whomever handles your order when you call. The second time there were issues with pricing again. Figured the food is good, I'll let it go for a second time. I let it go once again a third time. Now a fourth order is placed and of course yet again I ordered a specific dish, which I have ordered since the very first time I gave my business to this place. Tonight for the last time I had a long day working and did not want to cook, therefore my hubby and I decided to order some take-out from here and the person who handled the call went ahead and went crazy with pricing. I can appreciate good service, quality of food, what I do not tolerate is when you are trying to pull what I see as a scam with the prices. I unfortunately got tired of holding on to the other copies of the receipts due to the fact that this has been an ongoing issue from the very 1st time and cannot put them on blast with copies of the receipts, but I do want to make other consumers aware of this issue. Also the females tend to get very rude whenever you ask questions regarding these type of issues. So I am actually giving them the two stars only because the food is decent.

Yelp
$20 will get about 10 lbs of food. The chicken, pernil, and rice with pigeon peas are my favorite. The lady who answers the phone is always friendly and so are the delivery drivers. Oh and the pastelitos are huge and only cost $1. One of the best places in rockaway! I just wish they were open later.
google avatar

Bumble B.

Yelp
Why the low ratings?! I bumped into this restaurant with my husband while looking for a place to have lunch when we were visiting Rockaway Beach this past weekend. Not only was the food good and reasonably priced, but the service was fast and friendly.
google avatar

Stan B.

Yelp
Slamming!!! Wow. Highly recommend 5 dollar lunch perfect. Love this spot empanadas are also on point

Alisha R.

Yelp
I have no idea why people rave about this place. First, ordered food and full order was not ready for pick up so instead of waiting for the rest of the order to get cold, left without one item. Second, was left waiting to pick up order while counter help assisted walk-ins rather than take care of a call in order that was sitting getting cold and was not complete! Food was awful. Watery tasteless beans, garlic shrimp had old fishy odor. First and last time for this place. UPDATE: This review was written a while back and not submitted. Knowing the quality of food establishments in Rockaway Pk, NY, I can only imagine it is worse or possibly closed down. This review is insignificant in placement with regard the the reviews I have been posting the past several days.

Yelp
They get a strong 4 stars i walked in here only to find clean food clean restaurant, fresh smelling food the chicken oven roasted or charred in a grill or smoker top quality they sell everything they make I find diverse people walking into this authentic Dominican restaurant all the food looked so beautiful compared to other locations on this strip very organized and good customer service all the kids come here for empanadas which by the way are amazing ! good to know there not buying junk food ! Overall this is the place to be if you want to feel good after you eat I recommend everything on the menu enjoy !

Tameka C.

Yelp
I literally stood in line for 15 minutes to order chicken with rice and beans it was 6 people in line. Someone called an order in and the server behind the counter gave the remainder of 6 pieces of chicken to the phone order. Then when I stop her and say wait miss I'm ordering chicken she looks and says I mami there's no more. How is that when I'm in line. So basically don't bother going just order on the phone then you get top treatment. They didn't even try to compensate for the blatant disrespect. I eat from here at least once a week WELL NOT ANY MORE!!!!
google avatar

Yadi C.

Yelp
So much food to choose from but they didnt even reheat my chicken just served it to me cold. Will never come here again ....

Patricia H.

Yelp
Same incredibly perfect Tres Leches as their location on 116th. Humble spot, extraordinary eats. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Pat B.

Yelp
Had some great Spanish food from here this weekend. Working in the South Bronx this place had big shoes to fill and it was great. Steak in onions was so tasty and the roast pork was good. Empenada was one of the best I have ever had will definitely be making this a regular when going back to Rockaway.
google avatar

Aimee G.

Yelp
Checked this place out a few weeks ago. The prices were reasonable and the food was so-so. I had the 1/2 rotisserie style chicken with arroz con pollo and beans. My friend had the chuleta with white rice and beans. We were both underwhelmed by the flavor which was kinda bland. We both took our leftovers to work for lunch the next day but didn't eat it due to the smell. It didn't smell sour but it didn't smell like it should be eaten either. I was willing to try this place this again but not really sure its worth it seeing as though I make pretty great spanish food myself.
google avatar

Ramona S.

Yelp
The food is PERFECT. But the customer service? not so much. This restaurant is flooded with students most of the time, and I'm not sure Brisas understands that a large portion of their profit is from students, yet their treated like shit. I can write about 6/7 personal accounts of blatant rudeness from workers.
google avatar

Niki B.

Yelp
I liked this place... The food was good and the price was reasonable. I ordered a cheese empinada and it was really good.. The rice and garlic shrimp was nice. The passion fruit juice was a bit sweet, but overall good food for a quick bite.. What I really liked about this resturant was the customer service. The people were very friendly and helpful.. The location a little hard to get to, but if you are in the area, it's a good place to try..

Yelp
I'm so happy I found this place. From the outside it doesn't look like much, in fact I wasn't even sure it was open the couple times I first drove past by in and I also would have never guessed it was a restaurant until I looked it up on Yelp. This is a typical Domi/Carribean Latino food joint. There are a couple tables and after school this place was jammed packed. The restaurant is setup like a cafeteria and has all sorts of foods, like pernil, arroz con gandules, yucca, empanadas, habcheules, pollo, flan...I mean you name typical Criolla dishes and they probably have it. Prices are also decent for the amount of food you get, they fill containers to the brim. Street parking which can be kinda annoying but its just like every other business there. Employees are actually nice, they get the job done. There is a 10 minimum for credit cards as well. Overall? I will be back, especially during the times where I miss home.

Daniella C.

Yelp
Got called a pendeja on the phone. While asking if an online menu was available since i was gonna order for 60 people the woman didn't understand me so decided to tell her friend "una pendeja doesn't know what a menu is." Never going back
google avatar

Ristian R.

Yelp
I love the people here, i come back again and again because of how much it reminds me of home made cooking in my country. The staff is very friendly, and the place is always neat! It might get rowdy when kids come outta schools nearby like 4pm, but its good business. Their selections are quite plentiful and they have other entrees aside from the ones readily available but they're worth it!
google avatar

Margarita A.

Yelp
Hello Yelp! This is NOT a mexican restaurant. Gosh! Anyway. This is a dominican food restaurant that sells typical carribbean latin cusine. Arroz con habichuela (rice and beans), polla a la barilla (rotisserie chicken), pollo o carne giesao (stew chicken or beef). It's good food but what I like best is the atmosphere and friendliness. Usually not much of a wait and not expensive. Only thing is by 5pm they tend sell out of rotisserie chicken and sometimes it can be dry. Try their batida de Tamarindo!
google avatar

Alison B.

Yelp
Didn't care for it. Food had no flavor n most everything they had on the menu, they were out of. La joya de ceron on beach 114th st is wayyyy better. N they actually have food that's on their menu.
google avatar

Junito R.

Yelp
Food is very good. Staff polite and courteous. Delivery can do better and be faster. The food is generally out on display like a buffet. The chicharon de pollo is my favorite. Very clean and always a nice place to go.
google avatar

Vanessa T.

Yelp
I have been coming here since it first opened. First I need to say who who ever categorized this as Mexican is dumb.. its actually Dominican... its family owned n operated. Very cheap food n reasonable. Its freezing there in the Winter n hot as hell in the Summer... I rarely sit in there because of this. They have cable Tv to watch while you eat n the staff is friendly... as for the food I recommend the rice n beans aka arroz y gandulez, chicken w peppers n onions, roast pork aka penine, and as strange as it sounds the meatballs are quite tasty for their size lol. Expect to pay between 6 to 8.50 if your hungry. The Cuban sandwich is the best I have ever eaten n made the correct way. Happy eating ;)
google avatar

Galit T.

Yelp
Yummy food, huge portions!! BF and I ordered delivery from here, got it fast and it was delicious. We had enough food left over from dinner to feed 3 or 4 more people!! Prices are reasonable, hard to get them on the phone, but once you do it is well worth it. We had Chicharones de pollo, pollo giesao, mofungo con pollo, arroz con habichuela, and even tried a guyava cake.... Cake was a little dry but the favor was great. Happy to add this place to my local menu!!!

Natasha P.

Yelp
I've only made call orders the first time I ever made a call order. I ordered garlic shrimp and a family meal when I received my food I opened up the huge shrimp container with only 5 shrimps inside !! And drowned in what was garlic water no flavor. I immediately called and asked what happen I paid about $9 for 5 pieces of shrimp ?and almost $40 in total . The guy then tells me it was all that was left in the bag in the freezer so he he took $1 off my total!! Now why wouldn't u have thought to call me to see if I even wanted it at that point ? I asked for it to be returned for my money he told me they close soon I would have to go up to the restaurant myself to return it, when it was his mistake. waste of money no one ate it ! For the other food not bad.

Yelp
SO GOOD! I get home late a lot now and they are already closed so I miss this place. The food is always delicious! Love the pernil & tostone. The prices are amazing for what you get. The guys that work there are so sweet. Anytime they see us they always say hi. I 100% recommend this place!

Debra D.

Yelp
The food is really good and the customer service is great. At home Spanish food. Stop by when you're at the beach.

Mich S.

Yelp
Food is very good , have been going there last couple of years when I work near there, however today I was charged $28- for an iced tea snapple & 2 yellow rice and plantains & roast pork meals. Seems I was charged the non-Dominican price since I am half Spanish but half Irish and got most of the Irish looking traits. Very disappointed they would take advantage , since no prices posted anywhere I was too embarrassed to say anything. :(

Rory E.

Yelp
Wow is not enough to express what a great Spanish/Dominican place we just tried for the first time....and!!! right in our back door. First let me start out by saying how nice the people are here, and I wish I asked for the women her name who put together our order...so friendly, and went above and beyond to make sure we left happy. We had take out, so the best part of the magic did not happen until we got home. We purchased 2 orders of red beans over white rice, with roasted pork shoulder. Amazing, very tender..moist and not overly fatty. We wanted to get a order of the pork skin...but being that it was later in the day we kind of missed out.....or so we thought. The sweet women who helped us made sure that she snuck some extra crispy skin in there for us as a bonus. We also ordered a small stewed beef that was everything I hoped it was going to be, along with a small bowl of extra red beans and sauce. Now I will say that I felt the red beans and sauce could use a little more flavor, but I won't let that stop me from returning that's for sure. Oh wait....did I forget to mention that we also got 2 orders of Trace Letchas....as excellent authentic Latin desert. ...so all this for $24!!! You can not beat this deal anywhere on the beach!

Shari M.

Yelp
Your typical Dominican restaurant/take-out with more than reasonable prices. I enjoy the pernil, rice and beans with a side of plantains. The deserts, juices and sides are good as well. The food is fresh as it gets busy. I wouldn't recommend ordering too close to closing as it appears that you get the scraps. They take credit cards AND deliver which is a huge plus. Delivery is fairly quick.

Kayla H.

Yelp
I absolutely love this restaurant! Great sized empanadas. Great portions of food as well.
google avatar

Chastity M.

Yelp
I love their food. Penil and stew chicken is my favorite. The food is usually ALWAYS GOOD. The problem I have is with their delivery service. The other day they delivered our food and forgot a whole order and took two hours to return with the forgotten food and when we told them we canceled the order after waiting an hour they got mad like we did something wrong. EVERY TIME we ever order from them which is about twice a week they ALWAYS forget something. It's so annoying because we really enjoy the food and I like supporting local businesses in my neighborhood but this is just ridiculous. I'm writing this review in hopes they will see it and understand that keeping loyal customers is important for your business and if you keep forgetting things in our order and getting mad when we complain you might lose us as customers. Please realize the mistakes you are making and correct them. Keeping your customer happy should be your number one priority and if it's not then your in the wrong business.

Rob M.

Yelp
Great Dominican food, not Mexican. Get there early in the day for fresher food. Good pernil and pollo de horno. Mondongo and chicken soup are great. Nice people. Family owned.
