Britannia Hotel (Trondheim, Norway) 4 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The Britannia name dates back to 1870, when British aristocrats used to visit Trondheim, just south of the Arctic Circle, on salmon-fishing expeditions. Today Trondheim is much more than a fishing town — it’s Norway’s third-largest city, a university town in a spectacular setting with a booming restaurant scene. And its most glamorous hotel, the Britannia, now hosts style-minded luxury travelers from all around the world." - Tablet Hotels

This might the best hotel in Norway, 100% the best hotel in Trondheim and mid-Norway. Rooms were great, service even better. Spa is decent size, feels very clean and cosy. Quiet and calm vibe. Multiple saunas, multiple cold exposure alternatives. Gym was very clean, modern and well stocked. Palmehaven is a must visit. One of the most special places for breakfast, brunch or afternoon tea in Trondheim. Overall it feels like an international five star hotel. Stayed for three days and enjoyed having Britannia as our base for exploring Trondheim. Everything is within walking distance and we just walked to the train station. The pomo museum is also worth a visit and across the road.

This was by far the best hotel we stayed in during our eleven days in Norway. Therooms were beautifully fitted out and once I got the hang of operating the lights via a touch screen, I was happy. The staff were polite, obliging and conscious of the importance of good service. We ate in house the two nights we were there at two of their restaurants. The food was superb and the service excellent. We had stayed in some excellent hotels during our trip, but this hotel was in a class of its own.

This was our second time staying at Britannia. The first on our own and then the second with our small group tour of Northern Norway. The location of the hotel is perfect and we felt special from the moment we walked in the door. The hotel is very opulent, formal and luxurious but maintains a feeling of relaxation, comfort and casual ambience. I could get very used to this kind of atmosphere. All of the staff are warm, friendly and helpful. We had a wonderful dinner on one day and a beautiful afternoon tea on another. As someone who primarily does tours in the UK, we find wonderful afternoon teas everywhere, but it is a real pleasure to find one so well done outside of the UK. Beautiful stay!

This is a truly great hotel. In the grand old tradition of fine service and older values but wit a modern slant. The rooms are old works and the staff have a a respectful attitude. All very good and room service excellent. My only observation catheter seems ybcharacterustucakknmodetn with the history and call of the building and I think if there is every a revamp it should go back to a more old works entrance. But it’s still the best in Trondheim.

Beautiful hotel in Trondheim. Our Superior room was small with a view of a brick wall, but we still thought it was a great stay. Bed was very comfortable and the mirror on the wall was also the TV, so it was an easy room to be in. The bar was a lovely black and white room with cocktails (and art) named after previous staff. Lovely champagnes by the glass and such great staff! Breakfast was one of the best, with more than fresh omelettes being cooked to order. Dinner both nights was in the Brasserie- nice and casual and really good food and service (thanks Isabella!) . This was a delightful hotel- loved it.

Amazing hotel with great F&B options, one of the best breakfast's I've had in a while and the main level bar is phenomenal. We had a gorgeous room in the historic component but the bed is a real dilemma. It was a very small queen bed with a major foot rest that makes it impossible for anyone 5'9" or above to properly sleep. We were there as part of a large group and this seemed to be a dilemma for everyone, hopefully they update the bed frames to be of 5 star quality. The spa is amazing, would recommend as well.

A fantastic hotel and the best value stay of our Norway road trip. The comfiest bed and breakfast is absolutely outstanding in the fantastic palm house. My only complaints - parking isn’t included - we found a garage 5 mins from the hotel that was much cheaper than what the hotel wanted to charge. Plus the spa and pools aren’t included - I find this really odd in an expensive 5 star hotel - I believe guests should have access to those facilities. However, all that being said I’d definitely stay again. The staff at reception were also really helpful (this hasn’t been the case at all our hotel stays in Norway).

Palmehagen at Britannia Hotel is truly one of Trondheim’s most majestic places for breakfast. With its strong reputation and undeniable bragging factor, it has become a cherished Christmas tradition for us, we have spent our Christmas mornings here three years in a row. Finding the place is effortless, especially when it’s a familiar annual ritual. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere felt special. As on previous visits, we noticed familiar faces and well-known personalities sharing the breakfast room with us, small details that quietly underline the hotel’s standing and appeal. Coats are hung in an unattended cloakroom next to the breakfast area. While some guests might feel a moment of hesitation, especially with valuables or expensive outerwear, everything was perfectly fine for us and added to the relaxed, informal flow of the morning. The welcome was warm and professional. We were greeted in English, slightly unexpected in Norway, but delivered politely and with a smile. The waitstaff maintained a classic, elegant style: attentive, helpful, and discreet. Their calm presence contributed positively to the overall experience. The breakfast selection this year felt more curated and streamlined than in previous years. While the variety was more limited, the quality remained high. The food was fresh, well-prepared, and nicely presented. Rather than offering countless options, Palmehagen focuses on a smaller selection that perhaps encourages guests to slow down and enjoy both the meal and the conversation. This is where Palmehagen truly shines: the social atmosphere. The tables are well spaced, the acoustics pleasant, and it’s easy to talk and connect with the people you’re dining with. In the end, having fewer choices matters little when the setting invites real conversation and presence. As we left, we smiled at ourselves for instinctively checking that our coats were still there, they were. And just like that, the tradition feels ready to continue. I am certain we will be back to Palmehagen at Britannia Hotel again.

Yelp
The Britannia Hotel is a luxury hotel specializing in providing guests with an experience. Based on our stay, the financial investment is worth it! Lodging as adults or as a family, guests will not be disappointed. The staff bring the Britannia Hotel to life! We arrived late (after 2100) and our child was asleep. The front desk staff checked us in quickly and provided information regarding all of the amenities available. Before we even settled in our room, Ms. Mahasen from evening housekeeping was at our door with a cot and other items so our 3 year old didn't need to share a bed with us. Ms. Mahasen made sure to provide us additional linen, toiletries, and even a child sized bathrobe! When our child woke up, he was so excited to be "cozy" in a robe just like his parents. Housekeeping checks rooms twice each day making certain guests always feel refreshed before bed. Typical "included breakfasts" in the United States include cereal, coffee, and boxed scrambled eggs. Britannia Hotel and the Palmehaven staff give guests a true dining experience for the breakfast buffet! Eggs benedict, made to order omelettes, sliced fresh fruit, pastries, and even honey from the Britannia Hotel's beehives! (If you wish to see the beehives, they can be viewed from the 10th floor windows) With such an elegant breakfast experience, the staff ensure families feel welcomed and supported too. Ms. Anna hosted us most mornings and she became our child's favorite person during our stay. Each morning, Ms. Anna would ask him about his previous day's adventures, would give him a "choice" of where to sit, and actively listening as he shared his fascination with Pokemon. Ms. Anna and the Palmehaven staff keep coloring pages, activity books, and colored pencils to entertain children thus allowing parents to enjoy and finish their meal. There were mornings our child woke us up to go show Ms. Anna a different toy he did not share with her during a previous visit. The wait staff at the Palmehaven are kind, polite, and professional! If our child said "hello", waved, or initiated interaction, the staff always engaged and made our child feel seen and important. After a few mornings, our child was known by name with a few of the staff members and it made him feel like royalty! We cannot leave out the valet and front desk staff! The valets also came to know our child's name and asked him where he was adventuring to for the day, asked how the trip was, and were very understanding when he showcased less than ideal three year old behavior. The front desk was always smiling, professional, and willing to answer any questions. If they did not know an answer, the Britannia Hotel team went out of their way to find the answer for us. Amenities at the Britannia Hotel provide a great experience for those traveling adult only and those traveling with families. The indoor pool offers Child Friendly - Family hours; this provides guests with the opportunity to enjoy a child free pool environment while also providing pool time for families. They sell swimsuits which is very convenient (especially when traveling in winter when most stores no longer have swimsuits available in stores). The gym is a fitness enthusiast's dream! With a clean and spacious setup, the fitness center includes the typical cardio equipment as well as weightlifting equipment and a deadlift platform. Trondheim is a beautiful walkable city and the Britannia Hotel is set in the middle. The cathedral and museums are a short walk away. A convenient store, cafe, bookstore, and pharmacy are all located less than a 3 minute walk from the hotel. If traveling with children, the science center is also a short walk from the hotel; an excellent option for days with undesirable weather. The Britannia Hotel is also attached to several dining options including the Palmehaven, Brassiere, Jonathan's Grill, and a Bar. All of these dining options can be accessed without stepping outside. It was lovely to dress for date night without worrying about warm practical attire and shoes to accommodate the weather. This was our first trip to Norway and the Britannia Hotel provided clean, luxurious lodging with professional and kind customer service. With breakfast, the pool, location, and attached dining, the Britannia Hotel helped reduce the amount of guess work and finite planning needed to enjoy our vacation when weather or illness required a change of plans. We loved vacation in Trondheim and we loved our stay with the Britannia Hotel!

Yelp
Really nice ambiance and top notch service. Drinks were well done and an enjoyable time was had by the three of us! Highly recommend!

Yelp
The hotel was lovely and staff were attentive. Our stay was rather pricey, but we expected the room charges. We did not expect to pay an additional $40 per person to use the pool and spa area, however, but our major issue was with the laundry. We advise NOT using the hotel laundry. We didn't see a price list, although we may have missed it at the bottom of the closet, nor did we know that we would be charged twice the amount for an express wash. We dropped off what would constitute two loads, if we were doing this laundry at home, in the early afternoon the day before our 12:30 departure. The laundry consisted mostly of socks, underwear, one dress shirt and some t-shirts, two pair of pants- no fancy suits or dresses, just every day items for us (grandparents in our late 70's and our young grandchildren). No one at the desk informed us that this request would cost almost TWO THOUSAND U.S. DOLLARS! The staff adjusted the bill to exclude the express charges, but it was still almost ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS, which equalled considerably more than the value of the items laundered. When I contacted the management about this situation, they were polite and expressed regret, but said we should have known about the costs. This may be true, but when my husband presented the laundry bag, nothing was itemized and no estimate was given. It would have been helpful if the desk employees had helped us with this. We learned a lesson that we will always remember which is to ask ahead of time, but my husband, who was trying to help us get things organized felt humiliated by this experience. It was not the way we want to remember Norway.

Yelp
This is a vast hotel centrally located, but in urgent need of a nip and tuck. Nothing has change here in some time. The rooms are large with little decoration or furnishing. In other words rooms look virtually empty. For that matter, so does the dining room and other central parts of this large hotel. The reason to stay here if for its location and the spaciousness of the rooms. Breakfast is good too.
