On the Grid : Brixton Wholefoods

"Brixton Wholefoods is a friendly health food store that has been apart of Brixton and its unique community and history since 1982, Tony, the current owner has been there for 18 years. Stocking a broad range of specialist and organic goodies, you never leave disappointed! One particular bonus is its huge variety of herbs and spices that you can buy by weight, a rarity nowadays. In typical Brixton tradition, the outside is adorned with a colourful and rather magical mural to brighten up even the darkest of days!" - Eley Kishimoto

We have been visiting this shop for over 25 years. Today was the first time that I have experienced poor customer service from a man who appeared to be in their 50s wearing a multi coloured crocheted or knitted tam. He was obnoxious and inpatient. I will most definitely visit again, but with the hope that this particularly staff member have improved on their customer service skills! Other than this, Brixton Wholefoods is an awesome health store with mostly lovely staff. Xx

A neighbourhood shop with character and history. The spice and herb section is great and we get refills of eco friendly cleaning products – they also have rice and several other things. (Hopefully one day soon they'll add more bulk/zero waste items.)

This place is great. If you can’t be flexible to the staff in the health food shop being a bit quirky then you should shop in Tesco. It’s lovely shop run by hearty people and everything is good value. Fresh cakes and savouries, amazing herb & spice selection and lots of larder items unavailable in other stores. Ignore the grumpy reviews, Brixton Wholefoods is still standing for a reason.

I grew up in Brixton and I do like this shop purely for their great selection of reasonably priced health foods and I’ve spent a lot of money there over the years. I can’t quite work out why everyone that works at Brixton Wholefoods is sooooo moody and make you feel guilty for asking if they have what you’re looking for when you can’t see it. I’ve been there 500 times at least and I’ve never even had as much as a ‘Hello’, never mind a smile….! What is that??

First time visiting this shop, was recommended by regular customer that shops there. The shop was not busy as I entered in. The lady with the mask behind the counter was not welcoming at all very rude. I explained to her this was my first time visiting this shop and someone recommended me to go there. I asked her what do you recommend for tummy bloating, joint and muscle pain. She was hesitant to say anything and gave me a leaflet for me to come during week where somebody comes in to talk. Bearing in mind I am not from that area as I travelled far too get there.I would not be able to travel back down. I decided to leave zero customer service not helpful at all. Avoid ❌

Rude and abrasive staff members. The dry herb storage is not great. Everything tastes a smells of everything else due to not being in airtight containers. I would go to Baldwins on walworth rd for a much better experience and knowledgeable staff

As well as herbs and spices, they have a great selection of fresh veg, salad and delicious bread! Helpful staff are at hand for advice and to point you in the right direction. What a special shop!

Yelp
Tea tea it's good for your heart. The more you drink it the more... wee! I love this place because it sells me 'Man Tea.' I would love to have some 'Man Tea' but I'm not aloud because I'm a bird. I drink 'Women Tea' because I'm a lady! I do ladies things. I don't have testiclay!

Yelp
Not very welcoming to black customers which is ironic given that they are based in a black cultural area I literally went in and waited for assistance. No one asked if I needed help. They asked other people - white people. I then asked for help and the woman was quite dismissive so I left the shop within five minutes. They seem to be more comfortable around their own white, middle class shoppers. That was my impression. Upsetting experience given that I had travelled from Bedfordshire to visit this shop. I went into a nearby Asian store and they had the same product so I bought three. Black family don't shop at the stores of people who don't respect us.

Yelp
Whenever I go to Brixton Wholefoods there seems to be a rather vocal junkie in a heated conversation somewhere near the shop. This may just be my luck or something to do with the location. This is no reason to be put off, just cautious. You get pretty much what you would expect from a wholefood shop, a wall full of herbal teas, countless pulses, cereals, organic and health foods as well as a total lack of plastic bags (except recycled ones). They do not always sell everything that you are looking for but they make good attempt, going about it in a friendly and personal manner.

Yelp
I visited this shop during my search for natural unperfumed hair products. They had a really good selection of natural toiletries, including shampoos and conditioners, which are displayed on all the shelves behind the counter. The staff were really helpful and let me come behind the counter so I could have a better look at the stock and they advised me on what was the best for me. It is quite a small shop but has a wide variety goods from many different brands. Most things are more expensive than if you bought the supermarket alternative but you are paying for a better quality and natural product.
