The Best Gumbo in New Orleans | Bon Appétit

"A cafeteria-style neighborhood favorite where the classic pairing of gumbo and grilled cheese evokes school-lunch nostalgia; the gumbo is meat- and seafood-forward, packed with smoked sausage, hot sausage, shrimp and chicken. Rather than a traditional roux, the recipe relies on a large, richly reduced stock—an influence from Vietnamese soup techniques—creating a layered, stock-based gumbo that the owner says reflects his background and abundance of ingredients. High-volume service and other staples like red beans and lima beans with pickled pork are also highlights." - ByMegan Braden-Perry

I have been coming here for years...and lots of other people have been doing the same. When ordering gumbo, you can request no sausage, or no shrimp, or no chicken. How nice is that? Highly recommend. But order your po' boy at the cashier. This is a change from last time.

Google
This place is pillar in the community. I love the service and the food. Locals know, if you want good food, go to the hole in the walls. This is it for gumbo and grilled cheese. Then, if you’re hungry still and want something filling, try their shrimp fried rice and kabob plates!

Matt Fink

Google
Walked from Cafe DuMonde for some gumbo and I would do it all the time! It was absolutely delicious and filling. Highly recommend coming here. Also, so many other selections to choose and all looked scrumptious! Thank you for the great treat!

Brittany Clark

Google
Easily the best Gumbo I have had in New Orleans, I keep going back because I haven’t found anywhere better. Not a sit down place so don’t expect it, but if you want to try amazing gumbo with a little heat, this is the place.

Food was a solid 8/10 . Def enjoyed

My family and I visited New Orleans for the first time and found this place on TikTok! We are from Detroit and let me tell you this place was soooo good and well seasoned! It was 6 of us and we all got different things but we all were eating off each others food. Literally EVERYTHING tasted great! The gumbo, crawfish (which was well priced), and the shrimp pasta was my fav!

Google
Broad and Banks Seafood is a truly local establishment. You won't find tourists here except those most willing to venture into real New Orleans. The sandwiches and gumbo were recommended to me so I tried the gumbo which did not disappoint. It's a little thinner than most you'll find but the flavor is great. There is clearly an Asian influence in the cooking because you'll find fried rice, egg rolls, and lo mein next to gumbo, fried chicken, and red beans. It's truly worth a stop if you want a glimpse of the real taste of local NOLA.

Google
So you’re going for the gumbo first. Order a grilled cheese to go with the gumbo and then ask the lady to make you a plate. OMG! We had noodles and chicken, and fried shrimp, and some cornbread. All very, very good. Huge portions & fair prices. Love this place!

Yelp
I heard so many good things about this place so I went. The customer service is awesome and they treated me very well. I ordered a few things including a cup of gumbo, shrimp pasta, chicken wings, egg rolls and a couple drinks. The gumbo was absolutely amazing. Some of the best I have ever tasted. It had a good amount of meat and was flavored extremely well. The chicken wings and the egg rolls were good. For the shrimp pasta, I think I got a bad batch because the shrimp had an off-putting taste like it was spoiling or something. But I have had multiple people tell me that they had it and it was very good. They had so many other things that I want to try so I am going back to day.

Yelp
I found this place simply disgusting, unclean, unkept, rude staff and not someplace I'd buy food. Yelp deleted my detailed review for "language" as the truth isn't allowed. A "serving person" there deserves a special shout out. Yelp says I can't describe 'em or how their actions towards me and other people of a darker color made me feel, but I think y'all know what I'm trying to say...

Yelp
Strolling past the area, I wanted to get a quick bite to eat and did not want fast food. Although, the last time I ate here, I was not all that impressed. This time, however, proved to be different. I had the fried fish and shrimp with no sides for $11.99. The price was a little more than I expected, especially with no sides, but it was absolutely delicious. It was seasoned perfectly.. My husband had the lasagna, I had a bite of that and it was so good. It was thick, meaty, and flavorful. It put my husband to sleep. Now, that's some good eating. My food experience this time around was much better, I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Broad and Banks Seafood is my "go to" place to pick up some prepared food that's fresh and delicious. We get some of their grilled shrimp--(they have shrimp usually is several forms )without fail, fish and various entrees. Ten minutes in there and you've got a delicious meal to take home, for a really great price. Looks like it's family run, and they are "all business", efficient and very nice and polite. It isn't fancy--doesn't look like much from the outside, but I love this place--it has the stuff that you come for, and without way overspending.

Yelp
Oh my God I finally found some food in New Orleans that actually was worth it! I've been really disappointing this visit and the restaurants until I got here. The Gumbo was really good. The locals said to try it with a grilled cheese sandwich and it was surprisingly perfect together.

Patrice P.

Yelp
I like fried fish lasagne and red beans shrimp pasta there shrimp is good too the lasagne is beefy cheesy well seasoned the red beans got so much meat

Yelp
I recently went to New Orleans for vacation. I passed by this restaurant during lunch time. Since there was a long line, I thought to give it and ordered a variety of food. I have to say, this restaurant had the best gumbo and po-boy I've eaten in New Orleans. Definitely beat the ones from the French Quarter.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing food. This is NOLA style soul food for the people. You cannot go wrong with eating at Broad & Banks seafood. Vegans and vegetarians stay away, far far away, this seafood restaurant is like a morgue for fish, crustaceans and shellfish. If you happen to be vegan or vegetarian, stay far away from this place. EVERYONE else, I will see you at 12pm (noon) sharp. Enjoy!!!!!

Yelp
My family and I recently visited New Orleans for the first time. This spot was recommended by our Uber driver, Torrance. I'm so glad he did! You'll have to venture away from the downtown touristy area to get to this gem. It's located at the Broad and Banks Rd intersection. There is only on street parking so it may take a little longer to find a parking spot if you come during a busier time. When I walked in, I noticed it served as a carry out restaurant and corner store. I was pleased to see that there were mainly locals inside ordering food. That's always a good indication that the food will be amazing. I ordered the red beans and rice, gumbo, and shrimp po' boy. As far as this food goes.... On a scale of 1-10, this place is a 20. The po' boy filling, toppings, down to the French bread it was served on, was very fresh. The red beans and rice were delicious. And the gumbo had a flavor that was out of this world. It takes like no other gumbo that I've ever tasted. I'm sure I'll be back to visit NOLA again before the year is out. This will my first stop next time. Broad and Banks Seafood has set the bar really high.

Yelp
A small store where you can get a quick lunch to go. Grab some seafood and some deli meats and drinks while you're here.
google avatar

Calisha R.

Yelp
Obviously the food is delicious. The line stayed wrapped around the store with customers....locals at that. I got the white beans and rice...which were seasoned to perfection. Then i got the fried catfish and shrimp. Great flavor. A little rubbery, but i didn't need cocktail sauce (which is normally a stable for shrimp if you ask me). I will be returning to try some of the many menu items.

Yelp
I'm new to Nola and prefer to eat where the nola folks eat. I don't care for tourists spots. This spot is also a convenience store. I've found that these type of places have the best food without breaking your wallet. B&B is super crowded during lunch, so look fast at what you want and be prepared to order quickly. There's so much to choose from, that I got overwhelmed. I wanted to order everything. But by listening to everyone order, I knew the gumbo was a must. You can order the gumbo with or without rice, which is nice. It's full of sausage, chicken and shrimp. The roux is perfect. The Chinese food looks good as well. So I ordered shrimp fried rice and chicken kabobs. My total was 10.13, not bad for two meals. Next time, I want to try the shrimp pasta, it looked really good!

Yelp
I was craving for shrimp po-boy the moment I drove in NOLA and this was the closest to me at the time, but I was a bit surprised how sketchy this was. Broad & Banks Seafood is essentially a corner deli store with lots of alcohols that many locals apparently frequents, and it is for a good reason. Even though I would not recommend this for people who are picky about cleanliness, I think this is a great place to get a nice seafood poboy and other Cajun food without breaking bank! My order was a 12-inch shrimp poboy for $7.95. Inside was filled with fried, corn-breaded shrimps, and I actually needed a break to finish the hearty sandwich even though I was starving for hours beforehand! The fresh medium-sized shrimps were definitely what made this sandwich so good, and I was craving more by the end of the night. Like I said, there may be better poboys or cleaner shops, but for a 12-in poboy filled with shrimps for only $7.95...it's a pretty damn good deal!
google avatar

Bee J.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying I love this place!!! It may look like a corner store, but they have whatever you may feel like eating, bake, boil or fried. My favorite is the Gumbo. I don't go anywhere else but here for my gumbo, and I can't forget about the grill cheese to go with it. I enjoy the shrimp on bun as well. Can't forget about the fast and nice service you get as well.

Yelp
At one point was my favorite spot for gumbo but recently had a terrible experience. The gumbo tasted like they put nutmeg and cinnamon inside it. The shit was horrible, it was like a gumbo dessert. I'm a chef so I know every now and then shit happens but I Tried to get a refund and the manager or owner whoever she was says "sorry but we don't have a refund for you" I Also always hated the way the way they talk to there customers there. As if the people who are paying there hard earned money just don't matter to them at all. This place is trash y'all ever again!

Yelp
FAVORITE DELI COUNTER OF 2014 This was a true find...literally I followed a stream of construction workers through its doors. Since that day I have stopped here on almost every long run I take through this sketchy neighborhood (and that's during the daytime) for pasta, gumbo, kebabs, etc. The cashier sits behind bullet proof glass, yet Audi's and Mini Coopers idle out front. Worth a look. Other 2014 Favorites: Melba's, NOLA Smokehouse, Dmac's, Los Poblanos Foodtruck, New Orleans Coffee & Beignets, De Ville Crêperie.

Yelp
Holy cow, I can't believe we ate dinner for less than $20 including a $4 half gallon of milk for in the morning! We stopped in to grab dinner because Yelper Daughter wasn't really that hungry and we planned to split a po'boy. Well, they don't make sandwiches at 8 pm, so we picked out some yummy-looking roast chicken and shrimp pasta instead. I didn't think the girl was ever going to stop putting pasta in that box! And it was all delicious. The girls behind the counter were sweet, including playing along with a regular who was teasing her about her Asian language. It's another one of those divine little groceries that populate every other corner of this town, so don't expect to find anyplace to sit. But for a cheap, awesome meal on the run, you can't beat it!
google avatar

Juleta C.

Yelp
I simply love this spot! You can't go wrong with the gumbo, red beans, butter beans, ribeye, fried jumbo shrimp, fried catfish, smothered pork chops, shucks... I haven't tasted anything that I didn't love yet. The only issue that I have is although the gumbo price is quite reasonable, the way they "pick through" the ingredients in the gumbo and keep dropping the meat and putting more juice in your container drives me batty! If you pick it up, put it in my bowl! Other than that I recommend Broad & Banks highly!
google avatar

Mando O.

Yelp
Gumbo po-boy half and half were delicious. Don't let the store front keep you coming in here.
google avatar

Shercole K.

Yelp
Okay let me start off by saying, its definitely not a place you want to stick around to long. Although its worth being asked by alcoholics for a dollar to go get some of the food. It's basically just a regular store, but they serve food in the back. Everyone goes here for some gumbo, its absolutely great. One of my favorite items is the shrimp past and club poboy. You have to try it out. It's beyond cheap!
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
Hole in the wall, hidden gem. The food is delicious, it's all to go and the line moves fast. The portion sizes they give are huge and the shrimp are huge. They have gumbo and white beans that are to die for. Give it a try for lunch, you won't be disappointed

T L.

Yelp
The best seafood gumbo in the city. Hands down. You must go there and try it. It's usually served with the rice, so if you don't like much rice in your gumbo, ask them to put the rice on the side. Thank me later :)
google avatar

Kacy S.

Yelp
This is gross old cold food that had a fly flying on it. They never cover up the food. 10 years ago the food was great. Every time I hop off the plane I would stop here. Do yourself a favor. Keep going and don't eat here. Call the health department and see if they even are eligible to have a food license in NOLA
google avatar

Letitia H.

Yelp
Grilled cheese and Gumbo!!!! Need I say more? Try calling ahead to order especially if it's near closing time!
google avatar

Belinda B.

Yelp
I didn't try the food...too many flies for me...grabbed a bag of chips and a juice... flies are a turn off for me.. lots of locals referred me to this store/carry-out...but the flies..I can't.
google avatar

Kristina K.

Yelp
Gumbo rocks. Do not be intimidated, just plow on in and get some of the best gumbo I've ever had. The only drawback is that it's all to go, there's no place to sit and eat, but I don't let minor issues like that deter me from having great food.

Vienam H.

Yelp
Super tasty! Try the Po-Boy or gumbo! Very friendly and familiar persons who work their! In New Orleans immer ein Besuch wert!
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
The cult following of this place is ridiculous. This is your typical Asian influenced New Orleans corner store. With marginally fresher ingredients. Most of what I've ever had is way too salty. The only time I ever come here is if I'm hankering for a fix of calorie laden sweet and sour pork with it's oddly buttery shrimp fried rice. They also of a sizable amount of "new orleans" staples, seafood pasta, shrimp, stuffed crab, red beans and rice, po-boys etc. But to be honest with you, the average working class New Orleans resident is probably addicted to salt first and foremost. It's not that the recipes suck, it's someone just got used to dumping too much salt and not enough anything else along the way. You will find plenty of it here. Places like this to me are ruining food culture for a lot of Americans. Taking away flavor and fresh delicious ingredients, and replacing it with quantity and addiction to carbs, salts, and sugars.
google avatar

Justin L.

Yelp
Pretty awesome food. There are other gas stations with similar poboys that are cheaper, but for food, this place is better than all the gas stations on broad. They serve the typical 8in, 16in, and 32in poboy from shrimp, catfish, to oysters and hot sausage. My culinary friend really enjoyed their gumbo -- per rec from some of the customers. It's basically a fusion of Chinese and Cajun-soul food cooked by Vietnamese management. Definitely a good combination so if you are looking for inexpensive food that tastes great, swing by and you won't be disappointed.

Patrice W.

Yelp
I really liked their gumbo but not today. Its was really sweet and they wouldn't give my money back. I gave them 30.00 dollars and its but horrible. Don't go there, its not worth it.
google avatar

Joanna A.

Yelp
A little hidden jewel. It's a corner store, but don't be fooled, the food was really good. Large variety of things to choose from. Great place to stop in and get a really good freshly made shrimp poboy or any other origins New Orleans cuisine .
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Really good food and friendly service. I always get the gumbo but my friends always order a number of different things. Live in Houston but from Omaha Nebraska. Always come in July.
google avatar

Ileana O.

Yelp
Gumbo and meat pies are A+. A small Gumbo (which was so filling I couldn't even finish) and their meat pie only ran me $7.02 with tax. The food has a kick to it so be warned but it's hella tasty.
google avatar

Steve M.

Yelp
The food here isn't spectacular but it's definitely mangeable, and the prices are ridiculously low. We got a large (huge) thing of gumbo, a combo plate of red beans and rice with 2 pork chops, and 6 hard shell crabs, and it came to $23. The gumbo is really thick with chicken, shrimp and sausage. The ladies that work there are nice and friendly and don't mind if you ask dumb questions. As noted in the other review, it's not the greatest intersection but there are a few parking spots on the Banks side, so I wouldn't say you're in any danger if you pop in and out of there.
google avatar

Kendra S.

Yelp
When you 're stuck eating out every night at expensive touristy restaurants that are close by to your hotel, this place was a breath of fresh air . A local directed us to this place way off the beaten path but it was cheap and absolutely delicious. So much to choose from we ordered one of almost everything we saw. And every last thing was good the shrimp the pasta the rice the Po' boys. $2 for a whole stuffed soft shell crab...! Sketchy area but there were plenty of cops around to make you feel safe if you're not from here. Outside looks like a mini mart but don't let that fool you even though you can't dine in. And it definitely beats McDonald's if you going broke. Everything tastes home cooked if you missing that kind of meal. And it was just a quick trolley ride down Canal and a few blocks away from the main streets. Would definitely recommend and come here again.

Lynn P.

Yelp
I am from New Orleans and this place has the BEST gumbo in the city!! Every time my friends come from out of town they want to go straight here for gumbo. Everything else is great too. If you want great food at a great place this is the place to go.

Katie S.

Yelp
We were visiting New Orleans and asked a local where to get the best gumbo. He said you can't buy it, it has to be made by Grandmom. But, second to that, you go to Broad and Banks. We took him up on his recommendation and he was right, the gumbo here is incredible! By far the best we had in New Orleans. Both the oyster and shrimp po' boys were also delicious. Highly recommend! We will definitely be coming back.
google avatar

Angelina B.

Yelp
I visited this spot based upon several friends raving about the gumbo. I was underwhelmed. While the gumbo contained generous portions of meat and shrimp it tasted bland, like something was missing. I also tried the eggrolls and they were ok.
google avatar

BEVERLY V.

Yelp
Well what can I say about my gumbo experience at this establishment. I was staying at the Hilton River Walk Nola. I asked the concierge desk were csn i get a good gumbo and I was referred to this establishment and it did not disappoint. The gumbo was so delicious, you can see the sausage, the chicken and plump shrimp. The roux gravy was very tasty. I would recommend this place for outstanding gumbo.

Tiffany S.

Yelp
Best gumbo ever! The workers are really nice ! It's all fresh food, it's my favorite place to grab lunch when I'm on the area. They have really good Lima bean too.
google avatar

Jonathan G.

Yelp
The food here is delicious and the people are warm-hearted, kind, and generous. I came here on a whim with a friend on Friday got the kabob (10/10) and the beans and rice (10/10) as well as a piece of the fried chicken (10/10). Needless to say, I went back on Saturday and ate more. Everything on the menu is delicious and the prices are low. Go there!
google avatar

Kim B.

Yelp
The staff is really nice. I live and work right down the street, so this place is very convenient for me. However, the food is mediocre and way way way too salty. I've had several items there and most were just passable, as in they will make a turd and that's about it. The lasagna I had today was by far the most disgusting thing I've put in my mouth since I accidentally spread some of Aunt Betty's cat food pate on a cracker at Christmas. They made it with American cheese, and a few noodles and mostly a large heaping helping of salted hamburger. I was starving so I did my best to eat around the most disgusting parts (really? What level of hunger desperation had I reached today?) I gave the homeless guy outside $2 just to go across the street and save himself.
google avatar

Umi Y.

Yelp
Awesome service & food...Ill be back next weekend....These poboys are to die for...OKC needs more places like this! More of this and ill move down here!
google avatar

Tenisha I.

Yelp
So many things to choose from. I ended up just having shrimp fried rice and an egg roll since I caught them near closing time. Clean place. Shrimp were clean, which I'm crazy OCD about. I'll definitely be going back again soon for a Po Boy, among other things.
google avatar

Van-Anh D.

Yelp
Love Love Love their gumbo. It's so addicting !! All their food is good. I work down the street from them and at least eat there once a week. I also like their boil corn and potatoes. I don't even like boil potatoes but I'm in love with their. It's the only place I would eat the potatoes because they are so flavorful. Other places are so bland!
google avatar

Yelp
Recommendation by a heavy set N'awlins native Uber driver, check. Slightly questionable looking neighborhood complete with cat calls for my lady friend from some of NOLA's finest gentlemen, check. Convenience store front long overdue for a upgrade, check. All the hallmark signs of a hidden food gem, double check. Broad and Banks offers excellent down home Cajun food along with a mix of Chinese and Italian fare. Even better is that its cheap enough that you can easily afford a taste of their large variety. My girlfriend and I have made Broad and Banks a Monday tradition on our yearly trip to the Big Easy. We share two small vats one containing red beans the other gumbo. Both of which are out of this world. The gumbo is filled with delicious ingredients that seemingly includes everything but the kitchen sink. In addition I order the oysters and catfish platter. It is always fried just right and full of flavor. If you're looking for a low key but delicious meal with a great price to match, then step away from the MacDonald's counter and check this out.
google avatar

Aaron J.

Yelp
After my friend found a roach in her gumbo and sent me a picture I will not be eating there. Although when I did eat there the food was good.
google avatar

Angie H.

Yelp
This is a local lunch counter that does take out orders only. For under $20, a family of four can eat and be full until morning. We love the Gumbo, it is loaded with shrimp, patton's sausage (a New Orleans staple), boneless chicken and smoked sausage. If you like a very thick gumbo this is not for you. However, if you like a thinner very flavorful gumbo this a great option. Boiled crabs, Ribeye steaks, fried chicken, red & white beans n rice, stuffed bell peppers, etc. They have all of the dishes LA is known for. From Soul Food (Boiled turkey necks, pig feet, corn, potatoes), Cajun food (Gumbo), and Chinese food (Lomein/ fried rice)it is all there. Did I mention they have ooey gooey cake, a soul food favorite (it's a cross between yellow fudge and yellow butter cake). There is also a very good Shrimp with Penne Pasta. This spot also makes delicious poboys and sandwiches. Please know this is not a touristy place, it is authentic and where the local folks go for a hearty bite. If you're a tourist take a cab to this location and go eat up the street in Armstrong Park or bring it back to your hotel to eat on the balcony as you soak up all the sites and sounds of this beautiful city. Don't waste your time or your $ in the quarter thinking you'll find authentic New Orleans, this is the real deal.

Brandye D.

Yelp
Great spot for what it is. IT IS A CORNER STORE! The prices are good, the food is good, the service is great, and you will have your food quick and fresh. The gumbo is delicious! It is a great alternative to cooking a pot of gumbo at home....we spent $20 on 2 large gumbos, soft shell crab and a kabob.

S D.

Yelp
Surprisingly good hot food and poboys from the back counter! Run over here, get a catfish poboy and a beer, down em on the corner and you can make it back to the courthouse in time for your arraignment.
