The Best Restaurants for Dining Out in Charlottesville, Virginia | Eater DC

"Chef Tucker Yoder cooks with the seasons at Broadcloth, an elegant, modern dining destination tucked in a converted wool mill. There, you can expect exceptional, detailed service and often Asian-inspired cuisine with nods to French technique. As such, the menu changes often, but at least the dining style relieves guests of guess work. Simply choose a 4-course, 6-course, or up to 10-course chef’s tasting menu, and sit back while Yoder does the rest. Or, for a more casual vibe, check out Selvedge Brewing next door, where Yoder’s taproom menu features a righteous burger and irresistibly fun nacho fries." - Stephanie Ganz

One for the best meals I’ve had in my life. Went with my husband and we both chose the 6 course meal; I was so full at the end I probably could’ve chosen the 4 course. Love the variety and flexibility with the menu options. All proteins were beautiful cooked, vegetables were fresh, and flavors worked really well together. Would go back for the duck breast and short rib! It is clear how much thought the chef puts into every element of every dish. Nekya was an excellent server and the whole team was very welcoming. Vibes were also very fun—industrial chic.

Delicious dishes made with the freshest, local ingredients along with thoughtful wine and cocktail pairings. We highly recommend broadcloth.

My wife and I dined here to celebrate her birthday and it did not disappoint. We did the tasting menu and each course was phenomenal. Seriously one of the best meals I’ve ever had. The wine pairings were superb, really matched well with each course. Service was great as well. Definitely one of the best fine dining options in the area!

Had a wonderful date night at Broadcloth! Everything was top notch! More than just dinner, it’s a flavorful culinary experience. We each got the 4 course with pairing and chose 8 different dishes. All were amazing! From the time we walked in to the time we left, we were treated like VIPs. Cecilia was our server and she was amazing. The GM was working the bar and I was so impressed with her wine knowledge. I got a giftcard for my parents. Can’t wait to go back!

My husband and I stopped in for a impromptu date night and decided to go with the tasting menu on our amazing server, Cecilia's recommendation. Everything we had was absolutely delicious! The Chantilly cocktail was also absolutely perfect! I was a very big fan of the chocolate cake and my husband was very partial to the trout. While it is expensive, I thought the serving sizes for each dish were perfect because we left feeling comfortable, not stuffed.

We had an exceptional meal at Broadcloth! We loved the ambience, and every dish and paired drink was absolutely delicious. We did the 4-course and 6-course with pairing so we could share 5 & 5 and it was the perfect amount of food. The knowledge and attention of each staff member was top-notch. This is the perfect place to celebrate a special evening or enjoy a date with some of the best food we’ve enjoyed in Cville. We’ll definitely be back!

The service is warm and inviting, prompt yet unobtrusive. We enjoyed complementary beverages for my husband’s birthday. The food was delicious and also made us ask, “What’s in that?!?!” The scallops and trout were particularly good. The menu is veggie, farmer’s market driven but not obviously so. It’s only as the meal goes on do you think, “huh, we’re not drowning in starches” which is essential because the portions are larger than you would think for a 4-course tasting menu. At Broadcloth we were pleasantly struck dumb by the quality and care of the ingredients. No dish was overwrought but minimally dressed to let the essence of the peak seasonal ingredients shine. Reminded us of our childhood, growing up on a farm, walking through the fields in the spring and picnicking while we picked spring peas and radishes, cut the asparagus and washed field mix. Nostalgia was high. Be back soon.

We had a poor experience when Broadcloth first opened and it took me three years to get back. Round 2 the service was excellent, but the food ranged from inedible to just okay. My wife and I each got 6 courses and none of them were memorable in a good way. The roasted squash had rancid smelling collard greens as the base and it is easily the worst dish we've encountered all year. I have no idea how it left the kitchen. I found myself nauseated again when the lambchetta was served, but thought it was the smell of collards from another table. I eventually found a small amount of the greens tucked inside the lambchetta and that course was ruined as well. The beef tartare was completely unseasoned and it went back to the kitchen uneaten. I didn't ask for any replacements or explanations and no apologies were given for wasting $450 on a really subpar meal.

Yelp
Diverse, rotating menu. Everything cooked to perfection and prepared with high level of detail. Excellent wine pairing menu, absolutely worth getting. Cecilia was excellent. Will be coming back regularly.

Yelp
Incredible dinner! I had been wanting to try this place for a while now, but only just now got around to it (you have to book reservations well in advance). My husband and I did the four course option. The menu has some natural options, such as veggies, seafood, main proteins, and dessert - ours had 12 options total. We decided to select 4 different dishes each and share all of them so we could try the majority of the menu. You didn't have to stick to the categories (you could even double up on say the ribeye if you wanted to) but we did and were SO full, I'm glad we didn't try to add in another main or go for the six course instead of the four. Everything we had was absolutely delicious. Because I'm pregnant we did not do the drink pairing, but the mocktails were fantastic. The location was on the smaller side which made it feel cozy and welcoming, and the waitstaff never made us feel rushed in any way. I would absolutely done here again! I think it's been my favorite fine dining experience we have had in Charlottesville.

Yelp
Cecelia is the bomb. She has all the energy and absolutely made our night. We had an amazing dinner with family and friends. The chef's tasting was worth it. The wine pairings were def worth the extra dollars. The group decided that the ribeye, the salads, the kale salad, and the scallops were the best, but nothing was bad. Highly recommend for the food, the service, and the ambiance. Not a bad cocktail in the house either!

Yelp
Cecilia, our server, was excellent and friendly. We loved the choose-your-own-adventure coursing style. I did the drink pairing with my four courses and it was on point. The flavors in each dish were unique, seasonal and well-rounded. Thoughtful decisions were made to accommodate allergies/dietary restrictions etc. The overall vibe is quiet and lovely.

Yelp
It feels super exclusive once you're able to get a reservation here. We made ours almost a month in advance for a Saturday night. I was very impressed with the service, they definitely know what they're doing. We opted for the 6 course menu, so we could try all 12 items. In addition to the dinner course, we were also offered an amuse bouche and bread service. In total with a bottle of wine, our total with tip was just under $300 for 2 people. The price, though expensive, was worth the experience. None of the food dishes wowed us however- our favorite was the ribeye which was tender and flavorful, and the pork a close second. The crab cake salad was incredibly salty and the lamb was surprisingly bland. The desserts were unique. All the dishes were appropriate portions, we left quite full!

Yelp
Wonderful service, excellent food, and ambiance. Highly recommend. Also, Cecelia was a great server!

Yelp
We had a phenomenal dinner with wine pairings. Our servers were fantastic! The food was excellent! Love the mix and match options. Would highly recommend and we will be back. Thank you Cecelia making our meal memorable!

Yelp
Very good food and great service. Ordered six courses but four would have been plenty, as the plates are surprisingly large. Scallop dish and smoked trout salad plate were highlights. Wine list is fairly eccentric--would love to see them offer the ability to BYOW with a corkage fee.

Yelp
Nestled inside an old wool mill, string lights and exposed brick frame this memorable dining experience - the four courses my Wife and I enjoyed challenged our preconceived notions of what flavors and foods really go together. The service was excellent as well; Cecelia helped us navigate the menu and took the time to provide insightful comments on tasting notes for each dish. We will be back!

Yelp
Food incredible, service amazing, great hidden ambiance, but really lively. Drink menu is best around

Yelp
We absolutely love this place. The staff are personable, detail-oriented, and helpful. And the food is just amazing. The beverage pairing is very worth it, but a pre-dinner cocktail is also a must here. Been twice now for special occasions and we will absolutely be back.

Yelp
An extremely impressive meal from Chef Tucker and Broadcloth's incredibly talented staff. My husband and I opted for the Chef's Tasting Menu, and thoroughly enjoyed eating our way through each offering. We loved the unpredictability of not knowing what was going to come next. The service was top notch, the presentation of each dish was beautiful, and above all the taste was *chefs kiss*. The tasting menu offered a wide variety of flavors and introduced us to new combinations along the way. It was a perfect date night out to celebrate a special occasion.

Yelp
Wonderful evening!! Celebrated an anniversary, and were welcomed with Blanc de Blanc! The menu was beautiful and crafted so excellently! Service from all staff especially our server Cecelia went above and beyond! Recommend to all who have a celebration or want to explore cuisine's!

Yelp
Just WOW! We had heard good things and finally made our way east to check it out and we were blown away! The food reminded us of Alley Light. The ambiance and history reminded us of C&O. And the service reminded us of what you would expect at a Michelin rated restaurant. We will be back. And we will bring friends!

Andrew S.

Yelp
A last minute trip turned into an unexpected Christmas gift to us! Wow! The staff were so professional and warm! The food... hard to explain the exceptional palette adventure ending in the best dessert of my life! Thank you new friends!

Yelp
Amazing! You wouldn't think it from the outside but the waiters take care of you like your family. Probably one of the nicest restaurants I've been to in Charlottesville, and definitely the best dining experience! Highly recommend

Yelp
Not sure Rhonda is the best approach for a thriving business model moving forward. We had a rese for 8, called to change to 3. Showed up and she relayed that no, our rese was changed to 2. Given we were always going to be 3 when we called, her treatment of us baffled me and her inability to even try to accommodate us was frustrating. We were coming from a movie and wearing jeans. Felt very judged, looked down upon and as if she simply did not want to seat us, which she didn't. I've never had a hostess treat me so poorly in all my history of dining in Charlottesville. Honestly, one of the most hurtful, dismissive and embarrassing interactions I've ever experienced with a hostess. She was so unkind and so cold and so rude. Very surprised by the way our first experience unfolded, we didn't even eat there, nor will we come back. Lost a potential great customer!

Yelp
This is true haute cuisine in Charlottesville and while expensive it is truly worth the experience. We chose the 8-10 course chef selection and highly recommend it. The food is amazing and while we chose to not participate in the wine pairing the wine specialist and head bartender chose an amazing bottle of wine to go with the entirety of our meal. Stags Leap (2018) petite syrah. Enjoy your time as I highly recommend!!!

Yelp
Was so excited to see this place open up finally! Broadcloth is next door to Selvedge Brewing at the Wool Factory (same executive chef for both too) and is currently only seating inside, but not sure if this will change after the COVID-19 pandemic. For right now they are also only seating what looked like about 8-10 tables at a time to keep everyone more than 6 feet apart. This was our first indoor dining experience since the start of the pandemic and we were celebrating my husband's birthday. We opted for the 8-10 course tasting menu and it was perfect! Each course had smaller portions to make sure you could actually make it through the meal and by the end I was full, but not super stuffed which was exactly what we'd hoped for. The meal was really well paced over 2 hours and included mostly items that were part of the weekend's menu so it was nice to follow along. Our server was so attentive and did a great job explaining each course and asking how we enjoyed everything. She also mentioned if we came back for the 4 or 6 course meal you could pick any items and in any order for your experience. We've had some of the cocktails and beer at Selvedge so we tried some cocktails here too and they were great! Overall we really enjoyed our experience and hope to be back again someday!

Yelp
Imagine you've been able to snag reservations at one of the hottest restaurants in town. And then imagine that you've arranged to enjoy it with a couple of your closest friends; schedules are cleared, rides are arranged and everything is set to go. Then, imagine that Broadcloth calls and says: "Hey, we've cancelled your reservation. We got a better deal--someone is going to rent the entire place that night. So, you'll have to make other arrangements." No offer to make things right or do anything to take the sting away. No nothing. With that sort of attitude toward their customers, I don't suppose the place will last long.

Yelp
Finally got to experience Broadcloth and it delivered. Chef Tucker delivers with innovative, fresh, local dishes in a serene environment. We dined there in mid-fall, and our favorites were the oyster dish (in a delicious creamy broth), the duck heart amuse bouche, the salads, and a steelhead trout dish with a shellfish broth. TLDR: Excellent food, great service (even if I wish servers could ditch the masks), great environment.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I are visiting from out of town, and we are so happy we tried this place! From the minute we walked in, everyone was so accommodating and friendly. Since we arrived a little before our reservation, we had drinks at the bar. Our bartender (I didn't catch his name) was great , my drink was amazing (Long Kiss Goodnight), and my boyfriend said his spicy old fashioned was the best drink he's ever had. We opted to each do the 6 course menu with wine/beer/spirit pairings, and we were able to try everything on the menu. The service was great. Casey, the bar manager, made sure we were taken care of the entire time and stopped by our table to explain some of the thought behind the pairings. Tony, our waiter, was excellent and every person who served us was super attentive, knowledgeable, and caring. The food was absolutely phenomenal - every dish was so creative and flavorful, and the alcohol pairings were perfect. The chef is a genius! Overall, definitely one of the best, most interesting culinary experiences I've ever had. I hope to be back soon!

Yelp
Charlottesville has a chef. I had a chance to taste about 80% of beautiful offering of items on the menu. The precision to detail in flavors, preparation and presentation makes this place exceptional. Fish, meat, squab and scallops cooked to flavor perfection. Tune Tartare was excellent. Frozen watermelon chunks were a nice flavor dimension as they quickly melted in your mouth. Wine list is subpar and needs help. Seems someones meager attempt at being "international". It's offensive to mix five star food with two star wine. I couldn't drink the wine I ordered. Fortunately, I was with someone more thirsty and there was a full bar for me. The cocktail I enjoyed was very well made. The wine offerings are far too underwhelming for the excellent food. Please offer BYOB or put a decent Cabernet Sauvignon on the menu. I will definitely be back .... thank you for raising the bar in Charlottesville. Next time I want to experience the Chef's Tasting.
