A no-frills smokehouse serving meats dry—with sauces on the side. Kansas City Star readers called out Brobeck’s among the metro’s favorites, especially the burnt ends and ham salad.

We drove past two other barbeque joints that had a line out the door. Found Brobeck's BBQ and we're very pleased. No wait on a Friday night. Yummy beef burnt ends, side of baked beans, and sweet potato fries. A few slices of pickle thrown in. A mild sauce and a spicy sauce available on each table. All very good. (Guy at the next table insisted we try the amazing ham salad, but I didn't know what that was.) Very casual environment. Nice staff. Literally the smallest bathroom in the world :)

Google
The ham salad lives up to the hype, the baby back ribs are excellent (the rub is so good that it really doesn't need sauce), but the loaded burt end tater tot nachos were the show stopper for me as well as the cheesy corn. The great food, combined with the very attentive service from Holly, made for a wonderful dining experience. I highly recommend Brobeck's BBQ.

We wanted to get a late lunch so we stopped by Brobeck's and we were not disappointed. We started with corn nuggets and cheese curds. These were a good size and were very good. We both went with the Brobecks combo platter. Together we tried the brisket, pulled pork, polish sausage, and the Smokey Joe. Brisket was juicy and had great flavor. Pulled pork was good but you have to have sauce on it. The polish sausage was good and the Smokey Joe was very original. Need to get a sandwich with that next time. Had to get a couple of ribs and they were well worth the price. Great flavor and super tender! The location is not huge but we didn't have to wait at all with a party of 2. If you are on the hunt for good barbecue, go check them out.

Google
I selected the smoked jalapeno and cheddar sausage, sliced brisket and the Smokey Joe. For sides I choose the cheesy corn and steak fries. Let's start with the sides, you can't go wrong with the steak fries. They were the perfect golden color and crispy. The cheesy corn was also delicious. The meats. First thing the waitress did when she found out we had not been there before, she brought us a sample of the Ham Salad Dip. It was perfect for a little appetizer before the meal. The smoked jalapeno and cheddar sausage was phenomenal. I could eat them all the time. The sliced brisket was tender, but a little dryer than I prefer. The Smokey Joe is a combination of their signature smoked meats mixed with a sloppy joe sauce. It was ok, I wasn't a fan. Overall this is a place to try out.

Google
Love the food here. Cheesey corn is also excellent. Always a good smoke flavor to everything. I had the half smoked chicken. Fall off the bone tender. Good smoke flavor. Good seasoning rub.

Wow… Y’all call this BBQ?!?! It definitely smelled like tasty smoke when I walked in, but the food I got was anything but… Service was moderately decent, but friendly. The menu was normal and decent. I opted for their brisket and jalapeño sausage along with beans and slaw as sides. The brisket was horrible! I can’t believe any smokehouse or BBQ joint would plate something like that. It was clearly made ahead of time, like yesterday and then pan seared or microwave or heated in some inappropriate way for service. There were cooked juices/grease all over the plate in fact – GROSS! Check the pics, no brisket should ever look like that! The sausage resembled and very smooth external casing texture, like hot dogs. The bite texture matched that and the flavor definitely wasn’t of a smoked jalapeño sausage, rather one of a cooked hot dog… very disappointing. The sides weren’t that great either… I had to add tons of salt & pepper to the slaw and the beans were just hopeless. Sad and disappointed because this is the type of BBQ I’d expect where I live, in the Northern VA/DC area, but not at all what I’d every expect from the second best BBQ region in the world (Texas is most definitely, without a doubt, 100% the BEST! And it’s places like this that prove that point). Maybe it was an off day… I don’t know. But in my case, I don’t visit here often, so you only get one chance to get it right… all restaurants should know this and act this way. I’d never return.

Outstanding burnt ends sandwich with thick cut fries and a side rib made a great lunch!

We traveled to KC to see our son and had to change plans last minute Father’s Day weekend. We found this place and had the BEST service from Kimberly!!! Super personable, funny, & treated us like family. Food came out quickly & it was delicious! It’s casual, nothing fancy as far as the dining atmosphere, but we enjoyed it and the super friendly staff made it so much better! Thank you for make it a fantastic visit!

Yelp
I did take out. I really enjoyed the Smokey Joe's sandwich- it was small though, definitely pair it with something else. I also had the banana cheesecake which tasted artificial to me. I'd come back and try more options.

Yelp
Okay, not being from these parts..... I've come to realize that BBQ here, (KC & St Louis), is a religion. KC has more but St L is as good. They're just better overall. So, Brobeck's? Perfect ribs, tender, tasty and amazing sauces. Perfect beans, not too sweet. Perfect coleslaw, creamy and very naturally flavored. The service was genuinely caring. I had a wonderful and sweet and friendly server named Ju Ju. 5,6,7 stars!!!!

Yelp
Food- really good Service - good Ambiance - a non-de-plume bbq joint 1st time here as of 1/28/25. The second you walk in you get the BBQ aroma, and the hint that "this is going to be good!" Had the burnt ends and 1 rib combo with baked beans and cheesy corn as my 2 sides. Beans are good for sure. Cheesy corn is almost as good as J.Stack IMHO. Baby Back rib was so good that I may need to get at least a 1/2 slab next time. Burnt Ends were soft and chewey, smoky and great flavor. Nice touch @ the table of a good KC BBQ sauce AND a good NC BBQ sauce as well (more mustard based). Very casual spot a mini-Mahomes throw away from Wooden Spoon on Nall and 103rd.

Yelp
Burnt ends were very dry. Super sad. The barbecue sauce has a cloyingly sweet artificial brown sugar flavor. Unremarkable bland glommed up macaroni and cheese which was more pasta than anything else like flavor or cheese. The cheesy corn was very good. Plenty of wonderful black pepper mixed with cheesy flavor. Very dry small chunks of pork belly on the pork belly Cobb salad. The salad was otherwise very well appointed with ingredients like cheese, egg, and onion. Tasty soft homemade $1 cookies. Chocolate cake was kinda dry but the buttercream frosting was good.

Yelp
Great food, generous portions, excellent value for the money. Prompt service. Sauce is rich and the spicy mustard sauce you might be tasting the rest of the day.

Yelp
This is a great barbecue restaurant located just north of Winstead's, near Roe and 435. The ham salad is their specialty and it is magnificent! It was almost as good as my grandma used to make. That is a huge compliment as she was considered to be the best cook and baker in her town. The spare ribs here are some of the best I've had in Kansas City! The baby back ribs were very good also but I prefer the former. The coleslaw was creamy, but not too sweet. The beans weren't cloyingly sweet like Slaps (which are disgusting), and they have a little mustard in them and some meat as well. Pretty decent beans. I really did not care for the burnt ends. They were brisket burnt and about 50% fat in all. I had to pick them apart and throw several pieces away that were only fat. I guess the chance you take. I will most certainly be back for the ribs and the coleslaw. The ham salad is all time. Great spot!

Yelp
Awful. Online specials are wrong. Food is bad. Worst brisket I've ever had. This is a strip mall bbq diner. Stay away.

Sarah S.

Yelp
We were in town for a couple days and had a mandatory need to try some barbecue, we chose the right place with Brobecks! We had excellent service from Kimberly, and the young man behind the counter as well. The food was amazing, generous portions and reasonable prices. Our party of 6 tried so many things on the menu! The ribs, pulled pork, corn nuggets, cheese curds, white macaroni and coleslaw were are all delicious. I didn't try it but was told the brisket Mac and cheese was also amazing and it did look really good! If we're ever in the area again, we'll be back for sure!
google avatar

Lesleigh P.

Yelp
Everything here is fantastic, but hands down my favorite is the ham salad with chips and crackers! Our server was just the sweetest, and took excellent care of us. Daily lunch specials during the week, and fabulous family style deals. Plus, they're now open on Sundays for carry out for football!

Yelp
Elite service! So I placed a pickup order through Uber Eats. When I arrived the system made a mistake and they cooked a double of my order(was only charged once). Instead throwing it away or making me pay for both, they just gave it to me. They were extremely nice, so I made sure I gave them a tip because I appreciated them giving me the free food. As for the food, I had a two meat sandwich which was sliced sausage, and ham on a triple-decker sliced bread. The ham was flavorful and juicy, with the sausage being close to perfect. The other part of the order was a brisket sandwich, lean cut that wasn't dry & had the right amount of smoke. I do recommend the mustard bbq sauce they serve, it's extremely addictive. Food is good & service is better. Support local & go check them out.
google avatar

Fred Q.

Yelp
I've been back several times just to pick up ham salad to go. It's in a refrigerator so pick the size you want and take it to the register. Warning, it's addictive so go ahead and get the biggest size.

Yelp
The staff was super friendly, and the place was clean and busy. I got the Ol Ray's Favorite. I chose jalapeño cheddar sausage, pulled pork, and sliced brisket. I had white cheddar mac n cheese and coleslaw for sides. The jalapeño cheddar sausage was thinly sliced, which made it dry. Had a little heat and good flavor but dry. I should have gotten the sausage chunked instead of sliced. I think it would have been juicier. The pulled pork was lightly smoked, but it was dry, too. The sliced brisket was excellent, though! It had great smoke flavor. The house bbq sauce was really good. Slaw was bland, and the mac n cheese was ok. Overall, it wasn't bad trip.
google avatar

Yelp
Can't beat their smoked ham salad. I bring a quart home every time I go for lunch and I'm the hero of the house until it's all gone e!
google avatar

Cindy C.

Yelp
Jace is a very bright well mannered young man! Pulled chicken sandwich, hit the spot! Had a nice conversation with him regarding UK basketballs new coach! Go UK! Everyone that works there seems to have a great sense of humor! They have humorous signs all over the walls! I will definitely go back!

Yelp
Back again and still excellent. My kid has the half rack of baby backs and is in love. Seems like I always have the same nice older lady as our server and she's all over it. Same old comfortable feel in this place that I love.
google avatar

Chester S.

Yelp
Brobecks has good KC BBQ. It's deep smoked & very favorable. They have two kinds of ribs, St Louis style & baby backs. I usually prefer St Louis style at most places, but Brobecks baby back ribs are good sized and & l really liked them. On Fridays they have a double pork chop which l loved.
google avatar

Yelp
The KC area has a lot of BBQ choices in all directions. I liked Brobecks BBQ after being convinced to go to one of my mainstay BBQ places located in the city. I was a little leery but I was pleasantly surprised. First, the line moved quickly and the hostess/server was truly sincere and attentive with great recommendations of sides and what to try. I really dug the creamed corn and the ribs. Really tender and I also had some burnt ends. Really meaty and thick ends that were tender....delicious. I wish I could remember our servers name, her bubbly personality made ordering fun. Just a super place to try.

Yelp
I was introduced to their Smoked Ham Salad years ago and its addicting! I don't live in KC so when I was in town and just happened to drive by this past week I HAD to stop and get a lb. OMG-as wonderful as I remember and the staff was so friendly. Go get you some Smoked Ham Salad!!
google avatar

Steve D.

Yelp
I was impressed with the delicious ribs, the reasonably-priced lunch specials, and the fast, attentive service during my dine-in lunch. The Wed lunch special included three ribs, choice of 1/4 meat, choice of side, pickle slices, and a drink for $11.95. It was served just a few minutes after I ordered at the table. The ribs were especially good - meaty, lean, flavorful, smoky, and not greasy - nice! I also liked the turkey and the beans. They offered two homemade sauces - a sweet molasses, and a vinegar-based mustard - both of which were very good. I found the dining area to be clean and nice with country background music and two beers on tap. Overall, very nice!

Yelp
First time ordering Brobecks for delivery. I had heard a lot of great things about Brobecks so I was excited to try my first bite. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed when my sandwiches arrived and there wasnt even a dash of bbq sauce on either of them. There was no option to add sauce or order extra sauce on the app. Called to see if I could get extra sauce delivered. I was told that it wasn't possible and that in the future I need to ask for extra sauce in the special instructions in the Yelp / GrubHub app. This does not meet the high standard set by other great KC BBQ places like Oklahoma Joes, Arthur Bryant's, Jack Stack, Blind Box and many others.

Theron H.

Yelp
Great barbecue every time. They added the nachos this year which are amazing. The queso is fantastic and the pulled pork is quality. Pro tip - sub in bbq beans and dump on top along with sauce. If you need another reason to try Brobecks - ham salad. Smoked ham with seasoning and chips (and/or crackers) will change the way you look at life
google avatar

Katie W.

Yelp
My first time hear and I had the lunch special and chose a turkey sandwich. Simple and delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Every BBQ joint in KC has its own special "thing" - fries, dry rub, wet rub, cole slaw, etc. I would have to say that Brobeck's "thing" would be its customer service. Our server was great, she took her time to go over the menu in detail and give us her own personal suggestion. I went with the daily special and was not disappointed. I got a lot of meat and mashed potatoes for $10. She kept coming back to fill our drinks and to make sure our meal was good. Because of that I will be back. Plus I need to try their burnt ends they looked and smelled great.
google avatar

Aaron R.

Yelp
I can't believe this place is rated as high as it is. Went for lunch I had the brisket sandwich and bro had pulled pork sandwich. Meat was dry and had no flavour. Service was decent but Arby's is honestly better
google avatar

Nick K.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, great food, server was fantastic as well! Pulled pork sandwich with white cheddar Mac. I'll definitely be back when I'm in the neighborhood again!
google avatar

Yelp
Two words. Ham Salad. A delicious appetizer or meal served with fresh chips. You will find something here you like. Ribs, corn nuggets, brisket, pork, ham salad, etc. Each of our kids have their favorite sauce combination and meat selection. If you come on a weekday make sure your prepared for a wait during the lunch rush.
google avatar

Yelp
I know there are a lot of choices in Kansas City for barbecue, but Brobecks has always been my number one choice. It's a special breed and you cannot leave without having some ham salad. Amazing barbecue.
google avatar

Steven B.

Yelp
Wow unbelievable BBQ. I'm blown away. Self professed KC BBQ snob, humbled by this 435 stunner. Where to begin- awesome food, prompt friendly service, reasonable prices did I say awesome food. We arrived at noon, crazy busy with the 8 of us- but tables turn quick. Started w complimentary ham salad tasting, tea or Pepsi's products & ordered daily special or burnt ends or pulled pork. World class baby back ribs get one as a side. Burnt ends are award winning, best in town. Can't wait to return to check consistency. Five star plus.
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
Didn't enjoy any part of my meal. The sauce was way too mustard forward, burnt ends were a sloppy mess, ribs were dry and mealy. Ordered a side of cheese corn, and the portion was tiny. Literally like 4 dollars for a condiment cup full. Avoid at all costs.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by on my way to Texas. Had a rack of ribs with Cheese corn, chips and chocolate cake. The Ribs: Awesome smoke. Tender with no gristle. Very well done. About 2mm of smoke penetration and meaty. They provided a KC Molasses BBQ and a Carolina Mustard BBQ sauce. Both paired really well, so whether you like sweet or tangy, you're set. Cheese Corn: Different. I've never had and I'm sure what to think honestly. It was cheesy and creamy with added spice, but it wasn't my cup of tea. My kids enjoyed it though! Chips: Literally potato chips, but definitely fresh and from real potato slices. Nicely seasoned and crisp. A real chip! Chocolate Cake: Holy Diabetes. This was SUPER rich, but it was good. One slice was $2.50 and 3 of us barely finished it. Take one home and nibble on it. Definitely needs milk!
google avatar

Brian R.

Yelp
A very local joint. The ribs are five star. The gray lifeless brisket? One. The sausage is a split decision: Grainy for texture but tasty. Barbecue sauce? Sweeter. Lacks pop. In the plating department, popping a couple of wet naps on the platter, rather than the sides, which arrive on a fairly useless side plate? Very institutional. Service was good, much better if you're a regular. If it was in Salt Lake City it's a top cue joint. In Kansas? Won't thrill ya. Won't kill ya.

Yelp
Solid. Everything was pretty good .

Barbara S.

Yelp
Great service. Best French fries and onion rings. Their beef is always so lean. We like that it feels cozy like a neighborhood restaurant should.

Mariann M.

Yelp
Loved the mustard barbecue sauce. The regular sauce is also good. Get an extra side of the corn!

Yelp
Been here a few time now. Great Q and service real KC BBQ not trying to be a fancy restaurant. If you haven't you need to Try it out.

Yelp
A dive bar type of feeling with some of the best BBQ in KC! Yup, I'm saying it. The menu is simple, but that means it will be good. A small and simple menu means they've perfected their food. I got a trio type of combo with pulled pork, jalapeno cheddar kolbasie and the sloppy Joe! The kolbasie was amazing and the pulled pork came out with sauce so you could sample their two sauces yourself. I got the cheesy corn and potato salad as my sides. The cheesy corn could be a meal itself. One word-amazing! One of their famous appetizers is called a Ham salad. It is their signature appetizer that can be added to combinations. The waitress knew it was our first time there so brought us a sample of the salad. I liked it but wouldn't order it, sorry! I have recommended this place to other Yelpers looking for KC BBQ! I can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Nate W.

Yelp
Every time I go to KC, I tell myself, "I'm gonna try a new BBQ joint. Maybe Joes KC. Maybe Arthur Bryants'." And every time, I find myself at Brobecks. I'm a sucker for BBQ, and I'm not picky. I'll eat it just about anywhere I can. But there's something special about this place. Maybe it's the fact that I live 90 minutes away, and every time I go in, it's the same smiling faces. It's also definitely the burnt ends. And the Brobecks Mustard BBQ sauce. I'll put that stuff on ANYTHING. Seriously, the food and service is so good that it has made it difficult for me to try new BBQ places. Go give them a try. You won't regret it.

Yelp
I reviewed Brobecks after my first visit a few months ago - which was a largely positive affair - and promised Mr. Brobeck that we'd be back and I'd give some opportunity to raise the rating I awarded the first time around. Since that first visit, the magnetic field that surrounds the ham salad has drawn my wife, and thus our family, back at least three more times. And, even though we continue to show up for the ham salad, we happily stay for the delicious barbecue. Enough cannot be said for how awesome this ham salad appetizer is - so unique, smoky, delicious. Mmmm...mmm! And the chips that come with it are sooooooo crispy and well-seasoned, that I'd bet the lottery you could never eat just one...or ten. I've also now tried a combo (two-meat) sandwich - with pulled pork and turkey - and can tell you that it's better than the comparable sandwich at my other go-to quick-eats barbecue joint in town, who shall remain nameless (might rhyme with "rates")... The meat was rich, moist and smoky in flavor, and the bun was soft and fresh. Also since that first visit, we've experienced highly efficient, prompt and professional service, time and time again. On our last visit, we arrived at the height of the Saturday supper rush, had what appeared to be a trainee for a server, and yet he and a more-seasoned staffer saw after us as good or better than your high-end steakhouse wait staff. Very impressed. On the service side as well is how dang fast food is served. I swear it's at the table before I get the last syllables of the actual order itself out of my mouth... Lastly, I'm taking the Value rating up a notch as well. Frankly, for this solid of barbecue and service, it's become very difficult for me to keep that remaining star in the category hostage. They're not "giving it away", but whatever is right below that - that's what we have here. We don't eat out a ton, but you could say we've pretty much become regulars at Brobecks! On our way home after our last visit, my beautiful bride and I both decided that it had overtaken "Rates" as our favorite quick BBQ eatery in south KC. Now if I could just talk the wait staff into yelling at me to "take my order", I'd have it made! Food = 4/5 Facility = 3/5 Service = 5/5 Ambiance = 3/5 Value = 5/5
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
In barbecue rich Kansas City it's tough to stand out with the standard brisket/pulled pork/sweet ribs menu. Brobecks holds its own with a solid four star BBQ experience in a plain, non-fussy spot in southern KC near the state line. With close and easy access to I-435, Brobecks is good for travelers and locals.

Yelp
Visiting KC and this place was highly recommended. I got the brisket and ham salad. OMG the ham salad is amazing. I came back several times.
google avatar

Yelp
Good food and friendly service!! This strip mall location left a little to be desired, but the friendly waitress made up for it. I would never have ordered the ham spread, but surprisingly liked the free sample. The ribs and pulled pork were good! The turkey was like warmed deli meat. Corn nuggs with ranch were great!!
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Free taster of the ham salad dip started us off on the right foot! Our table shared all sorts of yummy KC BBQ ... fried corn nuggets, ribs, turkey, sausage, sloppy joe, shrimp, beans, corn PLUS the homemade BBQ sauces and bread. Not the most glamours ambiance but plenty of room and super nice staff that helped us order what we wanted the most efficiently. No wait Sat 4pm ish, quick service ... left satisfied!

Yelp
I might be a little harsh as I suspect I May have avoided my troubles if I would have dug a bit deeper in the reviews. I stopped in here to avoid crowds on a road trip back to STL because I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I went with two meats and what awaited me was some of the worst brisket I've ever had. It's shaved and over cooked, no juiciness or moisture to be found. It's meat so it's edible with some sauce but not at all my style. I've seen places do brisket like this in STL but with a bit of fat on the meat to get you through it, none of that here. Pulled pork was much closer to a 3-4, probably a 3.6) and the sides were all 5 (beans and potato salad). Also loved the sauces. I suspect I'm just used to different bbq pit masters and how they cook/cut the meat as most other folks seem to love this spot. Very friendly folks, I'd go back in a pinch and if nothing else, to give these folks my business but I'd probably do a bit more due diligence next time on my order. All in all, nice folks and it was okay but I'd of hoped for a bit more.

Rob F.

Yelp
Great service. Good food. Really enjoyed the burnt ends and the ham salad is excellent. Will repeat.

Yelp
Third time to Brobecks and a great time again! We went to celebrate our anniversary to enjoy some delicious bbq! Great service from the nicest and funniest waitress - unfortunately I didn't get her name but she was so sweet. My husband and I ordered a beer each and when our waitress brought our bill she said they were on her & she said happy anniversary - so sweet! We were just happy to be out and enjoy bbq. Really enjoyed visiting this restaurant - I order something different each time and it never disappoints! This time I ordered the Smokey Joe - it's a bbq style sloppy joe. Our waitress suggested adding coleslaw to the top - a must - it was great. I always order the fries - the best! And they come out so piping hot-so yummy!! Husband orders full slab of spare ribs - so good. Oh and so is the Mac and cheese. Keep up the good work Brobecks! We will be back!!
google avatar

Rob A.

Yelp
Wow. Underrated place. Local friend sent me for the famous ham salad on white bread- MUCH better than it sounds. The fries are thick cut, pretty good, but the standouts are the white mac n cheese, and the over the top delicious Smokey Joe- probably the best SLOPPY JOE VARIANT I HAVE EVER HAD.. Get there.

Yelp
We've been longtime fans of their parking lot neighbor, The Wooden Spoon, and have finally had Brobecks a few times! Our neighbor told us his go-to party food was Brobeck's Ham Salad, and now I can see why! It's essentially a ham dip, served with homemade barbeque kettle chips. We've also had the corn nuggets now, and I love them almost as much as the ham salad. There's a hundred great BBQ joints here in KC, and Brobecks is no different. We've had the brisket and pulled pork and while excellent, nothing in particular stood out. All of their sauces are great, we've had the classic KC style sauce, a more mustard based sauce, and what seems to be homemade ranch. Because of Covid we unfortunately haven't gotten to dine in yet, but we've been so pleased with our carry out orders. All of the apps are a decent size for sharing, they don't skimp on sauce, and they're quick! I couldn't recommend them more.

Yelp
Wow! This is a must have while you're in Kansas! Amazing bbq! The ham salad is delish! & you must get the burnt ends! What truly made our experience special was our exceptional service by Kimberly. She might have the best personality I've ever came across. Her hospitality just sets her apart from any other server we have encountered. She made us feel at home and gave us the best recommendations. Thank you Kimberly for taking amazing care of us! We will come back and visit you again in the future :)
