Brockley’s Best Restaurants | Eat Out in Brockley, South East London - Eater London

"A decent local chippy is but a dream for many Londoners. Some might argue that it’s a futile endeavour trying to find great fish and chips inland, but cravings strike and must be sated. Brockley residents have a solid option in Brockley’s Rock, where traditional choices such as cod and saveloy sit alongside whitebait and calamari with sweet chilli sauce. Crisp-battered cod is cooked to steam the interior into meaty pearlescent flakes. Mushy peas and curry sauce are proper — i.e., no mint — and pickled eggs and onions are present and correct. For the health conscious there’s an option to order fish grilled instead of fried. Try to overlook this." - Helen Graves

A decent London fish and chips shop, hence the community award. Had cod and chips and the meal was a pleasure to eat. The chips were nice and soft and the cod was hot and flaky, plus the batter tasted fresh. Had an Apple Fanta with the meal. A little on the pricey side and also would have preferred to have the meal on a plate with metal cutlery for a fuller experience, since I was dining in. But, generally good.

Brockley’s Rock – A Must-Visit Chippy Cycled here from north of the river after hearing great things — and it did not disappoint! Brockley itself feels warm and welcoming, even for us visitors from across the Thames. Before I arrived, five customers were already waiting—always a good sign. The staff were polite and friendly, setting the tone for a great experience. I ordered regular fish and chips with tartar sauce, mushy peas, and curry sauce. Ten minutes later, my food was ready, served piping hot on an unusually warm March Friday (17 degrees!) The portion was extremely generous. The cod was flaky with a perfectly crispy batter, and the chips were top quality. The curry sauce had the right level of spice, and the mushy peas were hot and delicious. The tartar sauce was decent but nothing special I’m afraid to report. I couldn’t finish it all, so I took the rest home—my family was just as impressed. I’ll definitely be back. Highly recommended!

This place is a must visit Chippy if you’re in south London. To start with the portions are extremely generous which in my opinion justifies the cost. It would be possible to share a meal between two with the size of the fish and the sheer amount of chips. The batter on the cod was perfectly crisp with big flakes once you cut open inside and the chips are just what you want in a chippy chip. The curry sauce had the right consistency, sticking to the chips as well as a good level of spice. I’d 100% recommend this place to everyone.

Google
ABSOLUTELY SMASHING! best fish & chips ive ever had in my entire life, no joking no exaggerations. the batter is crispy, the cod was so fresh that it almost wriggle off the plate! it was flaky, moist, and melts in your mouth like a seaside dreammmm… don’t get me started on the chips…thick, glorious chunks of potato perfection, fried to absoluteeeee golden nirvana. no soggy no greasy, everything was just right. please add vinegar and a dash of salt, and mate, i swear to God it’s Heaven on a plate, I nearly wept. the portions were so generous. honestly, if I could give this place 6 stars, I would. if youre anywhere near, cancel your plans and GO! NOW! it’s not just a meal, it’s a national treasure. 🇬🇧🐟🍟

Google
I would consider myself a regular and unfortunately the last 2 times I’ve had fish and chips from here it has been below standard and a huge waste of my money. It has not been fresh and the batter is almost like plastic. This includes ordering in store, so delivery partners have not been the issue. Not happy!

The place is cool but it more like take away. You have sits just in case. Very good price for gigantic potions. The quality was quite good. Also have some drink. We sat there but next we will definitely order. My boyfriend asks me to say that it is his favorite place for fish and chips in London.

Google
Superb Haddock & Chips to takeaway today. Very good, right up there as one of London's best Fish & Chip shops.

Google
Brockley's Rock is a local fish and chips takeaway. They also do other fried fish like calamari and whitebait. If you don't want fried fish you can get grilled fish. There's a takeaway menu of specials. When we went on a Thursday in mid- October the specials were hake, honey-glazed salmon & sweet potato fishcakes and Thai fishcakes. They have vegan and gluten free options! There's a whole vegan menu in fact, including a vegan fish steak. Alongside your fish, "fish" or other non-fish mains you can get various sides. These include the traditional mushy peas and a homemade tartare sauce. The tartar sauce was pretty cheap, much cheaper than the curry sauce in fact. Not sure how much you get though. We saw they had recently been named by a newspaper online as one of the best fish and chips in London. We decided to go and try it for ourselves. We ordered 2 cod, regular chips, a battered sausage and curry sauce. It cost £27. The flavour was nice. The fish is fresh and the batter on point. The chips ok, but were more on the soft side and no crunchy/crispy ones. The battered sausage was not bad, but a little dry inside. The curry sauce was thick and moreish. They have a system where the delivery drivers pick up outside through a window. You can order inside for takeaway or to eat in. They also do orders over the telephone. Yelp
So this chip shop is unbelievably popular. It's won awards in recent years and if you want to experience why there are two ways to do this. It's not the biggest space inside, which for me will hold it back from being the thing it really wants to be ?a (restaurant), so its very cosy to say the least. I've nor eaten in and am highly unlikely to but never say never!!! If, like me, you go down the take away route then you have two choices. Rock (no pun intended) up place your order and wait or phone ages and place your order to ensure that you actuations get what it is that you want. The sped of service I'll vary depending on the time of day and which day of the week it is!!! Fridays is a log jam so phone thy order in. Once you her your name called you are close to getting your order filled. The usual condiments are offered and away you go. I've only ever had the fish and chips and had no complaints (aside from the wait even though we called ahead) I guess that's what you do on a Friday right?

Yelp
Seems I may have been unlucky, but it was dreadful and over priced. Chips were raw and the fish, that day's special, like aged cardboard.

Yelp
Probably best Fish and Chips in area. Loved it! Will be coming back again, only this time I'll be sitting in and ordering a large.

Yelp
Ordered me two mackerel baps and regular chips to takeaway. Served in either a white or a granary roll. The server asked if I wanted salad for an extra £1. I agreed. It's those fancy leaves you get in those posh salads at restaurants, or you can find them marked in the supermarket as 'four leaf salad'. So everything gets cooked and all wrapped in lovely greaseproof paper, except the chips, now those come in a box. First thing's first - do not order the salad in your roll. The bap is pretty thick and with the salad and the generous sauce (not a bad thing), you can barely taste the loveliness of the mackerel, albeit it a slightly greasy battered mackerel. A real shame in my eyes. Plus turns out that it is actually an extra £1 EACH for salad in the two rolls, and if you want anything other than salt and vinegar you'll have to pay 30 pence for takeaway sauces of Heinz ketchup and mayo which I thought was a bit much. I did enjoy the chips however, and a decent size for £1.60 for a regular portion. Now I do get that their unique selling point is to perhaps offer something beyond the traditional fish and chip establishment, and I actually adore the fact that they even sell mackerel in the first place as it is a hugely underrated fish in my opinion, but the place is a bit too pretentious for me (call me old fashioned!), and with the additional little charges, doesn't make it any more endearing.

Yelp
A very, very decent fish and chip in Brockley. They have the take-away section up front, as soon as you walk in. You'll find an intriguing selection of fish, including East London's very own Rock. I haven't tried it myself, but ought to. Further back you'll find tables for eat-in waiter service. It's BYO alcohol too, which they'll keep cool for you in their fridge. Friendly staff and what look to be very commendable standards with regards to cleanliness in the kitchen etc. This isn't your average grimy fish bar. I really enjoyed the cod, which came with a hearty portion of chips. Even ventured for a gherkin, which made me very happy. This place is over the road from my mate's new place. Dangerous.

Yelp
Although it's not as cheap as your average fish and chip shop, Brockley's Rock is a superb eatery. I have never eaten in but their take away is phenomenal. A great selection of grub, and cooked to order exceedingly well. Shouldn't have to pay for sauce though...

Yelp
Disappointing. Arrived home to find take-Away calamari and chips swamped with 3 tons of salt I didn't ask for. Calamari also came with some kind of tumeric spiced batter which was awful and unecessary and ruined what would have been a well cooked and tasty fresh fish dish.keep it simple!

Yelp
Great Fish and chip shop where your fish is cooked to order. I have to scooter past one fish and chip shop to get there but it's worth going the extra distance.

Yelp
I had the cod and chips to dine in. The food was very nice and the seating area was modern and clean. I would definitely go again. Agreed it is a little pricier than the average fish and chip shop but it was a nicer restaurant to sit in.

Yelp
Massively disappointing. We ordered cod, steak + ale pie, chips + sausage in batter between our family. Everything but the pie was very greasy and a sort of heavy oily feeling stayed with us for the rest of the day. The pie however was quite tasty, unfortunately the 2 inch piece of plastic I found inside really put me off. We all agreed not to visit again any time soon.
