The Essential Guide to Astoria, Oregon

"As a coastal outpost from Broder’s string of Nordic eateries, this spot channels Astoria’s Scandinavian heritage with savory lefse potato crepes and bite-sized aebleskiver pancake balls for breakfast, plus more brunch-y fish boards and Swedish meatballs—easily topped off with an aquavit brunch cocktail." - Zoe Baillargeon Zoe Baillargeon Zoe Baillargeon is a freelance writer and creative copywriter who specializes in travel, tourism, and food journalism. Tried this little place for dinner on a roadtrip to the US and was pleasantly surprised! Ordered sausage, meatballs, lemon biscuits with radish/pear slices, & fish salad for me and my dad and all dishes were very tasty! I heard they just recently opened the dinner part of the restaurant and can testify it is great! Presentation of the food was top tier, the owner was really passionate and kind and made all the cocktails behind the counter. Who I assume to be his wife was also really nice. The decoration of the store was artsy and I enjoyed taking photos of the store!

Favorite new restaurant in Astoria! I got the half order of Finnish Oven Porridge with eggs added on and my mom got the Savory Two Egg with bacon. We split 4 of the Danish Pancakes with lemon curd and seasonal compote (blueberry). Also got 2 Rose Lemonades (on special menu). They have picnic tables outside. Perfect spot if you have a dog. I love their porridge! I could eat it every day!!! I can't believe how filling it was with just the half order. It was creamy and delicious.

We’re absolutely thrilled to give this place a 10 out of 10! Everything was just spectacular—food, presentation, atmosphere, and taste! It was truly amazing and definitely a standout experience for us. We can’t wait to return! The talented chef behind these culinary masterpieces should be incredibly proud of their work. Huge thank you for an unforgettable meal! <3

Best breakfast on the Oregon Coast! Picture perfect poached eggs on the Trout Benedict! The Mushroom Breakfast Sandwich was mouth-watering! The Iced Coconut Chai was so tasty that we got a second one to go! Great service, good vibes, clean place!

Google
This place is a gem for breakfast lovers! We had the Benedict, which was a classic done right—with a surprising twist: a touch of mustard that added a bold, memorable flavor. The potato pancakes were another highlight. They came topped with a fruit jam, which we weren’t expecting, but it worked beautifully and added a unique, delicious contrast. Don’t expect your typical pancakes here—these are a bit different, as you can see in the photos, but absolutely worth trying. They serve Coava coffee, and we ordered both a standard latte and a vanilla latte. Unfortunately, we requested the vanilla to be half sweet, but it tasted overly sugary, almost like they doubled the syrup instead. That was a bit of a letdown. That said, the service more than made up for it—our servers were warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly. All in all, a great little spot that’s definitely worth a visit if you're in Astoria!

Easy, unique, and quaint breakfast spot for hearty Norwegian eats. The trout hash had a great balance, and the æbleskivers were so fluffy & not too sweet!

Google
A great new arrival to astoria's food scene. Very cool food menu. They have good cocktails. It'll be my new place to go for breakfast and possibly lunch.

Yelp
Worth the stop in Astoria! Great food, fast service, and a cozy modern café feel. Traveling through Astoria, we stopped for breakfast at Broder Strand Café -- and the reviews were spot on! The service was fast and friendly, and the food was amazingly excellent. Every bite was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The décor has a cozy urban coastal vibe -- Scandinavian-inspired, warm, and thoughtfully designed. From the stylish lightbulbs to the inviting atmosphere, everything feels relaxed yet refined -- perfectly suited to Astoria's charm. They also offer modern tea and espresso drinks, all beautifully crafted and perfect to enjoy with breakfast. We'll definitely stop here again next time we're in town. Highly recommend Broder Strand Café for anyone looking for delicious food, great service, and a cozy, beautifully designed spot to start the day along Oregon's coast.

Yelp
If it was just the service, this would be 5 stars, but the food is excellent also. I had been waiting for this space to open and I was thrilled to see that Broder had taken up the challenge. I've enjoyed their offerings at other restaurants, so I knew what was on the menu. Scandinavian food, served with care. Aside from the fact that I get up before 6 and they don't open until 8, this place is a gem. I had the classic 2 egg, which is two griddle cakes with seasonal berries (blue in this case) with fresh berry compote, 2 baked eggs, and sausage in a mustard dill sauce. everything was outstanding. I was thinking of hitting somewhere else the 2nd day but when I stopped in for the morning caffeine fix and there was a line, I weakened and ordered the savory 2 egg, with potato cakes instead of griddle cakes. This place is a great addition to an already above average food scene.

Yelp
Visiting Astoria for the first time my wife found this spot on the drive over from Portland and, well, I'm quite proud because she found an absolute gem along the coast. Broder Strand is a Norwegian/Danish/Scandinavian/Something restaurant serving up some seriously good food. It's a shame we could only eat there once during our trip as we continued down the coast. We ordered the pancakes with syrup and lingonberry and mushroom sandwich and while the pancakes were absolutely delicious, I am RAVING about this mushroom sandwich. It is no doubt one of the top 5 or so single items I've ordered in the past year. Seriously tasty. So much so that I had to stop back in before we left to complement the staff. Mushroom gravy with, of course mushrooms, fresh biscuit bread, and greens and eggs leave you feeling nourished but not overly full. If you're in the area this is a must-get. If you're not in the area it's worth a trip just for the sandwich. Incredible!

Yelp
Scandinavian influence abound here in both décor and the food choices. Cool vibe, open café-style dining. It was busy the whole time I was there. When you walk in, they don't seat you. You order and pay at the counter before you sit. I got the Lost Egg with shrooms, and was surprised how much I liked the creaminess with the spinach. The eggs added a nice balance, as did the crumbs on top. Hearty bread, like the type I had in Denmark when I was an exchange student my last term in college. Dining there flooded me with memories of Arhus.

Yelp
I'm going to go out on the tiniest of limbs here and say that Broder Strand is the best restaurant in Astoria. I'm measuring "best" here primarily in terms of the food quality. Sure, it's only a breakfast and brunch spot. I don't care. The food is outstanding--better than the best dinner spots in town. A lot of restaurants start out strong, but after six months or a year, as their initial enthusiasm wanes, their quality slips. Not Broder. Broder has been open in Astoria for a few years now, and their food remains consistently top notch. I've eaten here many times (I come here almost every Sunday) and have never had a mediocre meal let alone a bad one. Unique (for the US) Scandinavian flavors, artfully presented. House made goodies like corned beef. Incredible sauces. Pleasant, attentive service. It's great. You can't go wrong here.

Yelp
Love this cute spot! My favorite dish is the Danish pancakes, which I get with a side of bacon, and a Chai latte to drink. Yum!

Yelp
This place is amazing!!! The Dutch pancakes were delicious (get them with the lemon curd), and the lavender latte was one of the best coffees I've ever had. The service was quick and friendly, and the atmosphere was peaceful. Will absolutely go back the next time I'm in Astoria!

Yelp
Great place. Looks like they are listed twice on Yelp - Broder and Broder Strand. Same location. We stopped in for lunch today. We were really happy with everything. We shared the Grilled Roast Beef Dip. Excellent. You could drink the Au Jus. I really enjoyed the Ham Benedict - "Smoked ham, 2 poached eggs, seared tomatoes, grain mustard, hollandaise & chives on toasted levain bread." The smoked ham was tasty! Not the best selection of drinks for me, but my wife enjoyed the Mimosa. I suspect we'll be back to try more items!

Yelp
Great location with nice ambiance. The staff were all super friendly with fast service. The food was okay but not really my cup of tea. Jam on potato cakes, no. The bacon was cooked great as we're my baked eggs. Husband's eggs overdone and kinda dry. He was disappointed with his meal. For all who love it I'm happy.

Yelp
We stopped for brunch at this very cute and quaint restaurant. However I thought that I was losing my taste buds as nothing had any flavor. My partner says that is how Swedish food is but I don't think it's necessarily a Swedish restaurant. I salted everything with the result I could kind of make out a flavor...salt.

Yelp
Loved the atmosphere, nice spot to people watch. Very clean and good drinks as well. The service was fast and the employees all seemed to love their jobs!!!

Yelp
Came in on the busy Labour Day weekend. We were seated right away. Wait for food was a little bit long, but we like the experience overall: food was good, coffee also not bad at all. We will be back.

Yelp
Exceptional food in a cute spot that used to be a beloved coffee house. Had the Bloody Mary, cardamom cream latte, Lost Egg and "egg sandwich". While I take issue with calling something that can't be picked up a "sandwich", it was absolutely delicious along with everything else. Easy to get into on a weekday morning.

Yelp
Wow stellar service in a beautiful atmosphere with the most wonderful helpful people who truly want you to enjoy their amazing food. I am a foodie and particular for coffee and I have to say I was blown away with the delicious pistachio latte and the mushroom crepes. I will be back!! Thank you , do not miss out on this gem of a place :$

Yelp
I have tried Broder Strand three times in a week. The Scandinavian decor and careful attention to details are so charming. Everything is picture perfect and a great use of this historic building. I am unfamiliar with most Scandinavian food. I was excited to try their abelskivvers, but I can say they are the worst ones I have ever had. Very dense and heavy. The presentation of all the dishes was amazing. I wanted to try everything. If I lived closer to Astoria I would keep coming back for the cardamom latte. It was the best one I have ever tasted. Their coffee has a nice smooth finish. The customer service was great from most of the staff. There was only one staff member on my third visit who didn't smile and seemed put off by our indecisiveness. The other staff were cheery and helpful.

Yelp
Pretty good breakfast spot in Astoria. I had the troutcake benedict. It was good, but the potato pancakes it came with were odd; very smushy mouthfeel of greasy mashed potatoes, but the flavor was alright. My wife had the basic breakfast, and we both emphasized she likes suuuper crispy bacon at least twice during our order. Unfortunately, it came out chewy and undercooked. Another man that worked there was good about bringing us some crispy bacon to replace it, but by then my wife had finished the rest of her breakfast and so had to eat plain bacon. Also, the dirty-blonde woman who took our order was very, very smug. Probably why she glossed over the whole crispy bacon request. We giggled at our table a few times during breakfast, playing a game of "will she smile at ALL to ANY customer?" which she never did. A little pricey, but it was decent. Probably won't be back. There are other options in the area we haven't tried yet, so... I guess we'll find out who's got the best breakfast at some point!

Yelp
This place was one I was excited to visit during a birthday trip and I really enjoyed the pancake dish as well as the coffee and a side of baked eggs. I wanted to be more adventurous but had been stomach sick before and needed to be careful. Service was good, it was busy in there but we sat at the bar. I wish there had been a list for a table or something but NBD. It was more lowkey than I expected it to be, especially on a Sunday. The crowd was mixed, I felt like some of the customers were typical of Astoria cruise tourists but also felt welcome by the staff (I am clearly "from Portland" and got some looks from some Out of State folks perhaps who aren't used to queer people I guess), but it was chill and I'd go back for sure.

Yelp
While visiting this restaurant about a week ago, I had an experience that left me shocked and disappointed. For context, this restaurant is a counter/partial service dining establishment. As we were waiting on our food, a server brought out our dishes to the another table (who ordered after us), walked away, realized that they had given the wrong table our food, picked up the dishes because the table swore "they didn't touch it", and brought it right over to us. I should have said something in the moment but me, and my friends, were genuinely stunned as we have all worked in the service industry for 10+ years and all know this is big sign of concern. In my state and experience, as soon as a plate touches a table/leaves a servers hand, it is a health code violation to give that food to another customer. The server did not have eyes on the plate for a solid 2-3min and had no way of knowing if the other customers touched, sneezed, coughed, etc onto our food. The nonchalance and lack of panic in the servers demeanor led me to believe that this kind of behavior is normal. I am really not one to leave reviews, especially in relation to service related issues, but since returning home I have told this story to my coworkers and their similar level of appalment made me feel like I should make my experience known to other customers that are interested in dining here. I also had emailed the restaurant before writing this review, but they did not respond. We were all a little disappointed with the food as well, it was just a bit lacking and needed to be seasoned better, especially for the high price. The vibe was cute, but these kind of food safety issues need to be addressed immediately.
